I'm not sure what's so great about this place. The best part of this place is the german beer that comes in half liter and liter glass steins. If you like german beer, that might be plenty. Certainly it was a lof of fun to be here during the world cup when germany was playing. There's also darts which are fun. The other parts are mediocre. The food is so-so at best, expensive and the kitchen closes early. It's often packed and the vibe is a bit too college/frat bar for my tastes. There was only one person working when we stopped by on a Monday evening. He seemed to manage well, but when he said our food would take a bit since he was also working the kitchen, I felt bad that they were understaffed. The atmosphere and beer were great. It felt like a cafe with large windows letting in lots of light. Big tables are great for bigger groups. They have games that you can pick from and play near the bar. We ordered a wurst plate with one bockwurst and one bratwurst by the bartender's recommendation. It came with a huge pile of sauerkraut, stone ground mustard, honey dijon mustard, curry ketchup, and two thin half slices of rye bread. The kraut was warm and had mustard seeds throughout. I learned that I am NOT a fan of authentic German food. I'm pretty sure they couldn't change anything about the preparation of the dish to make me like it more. The wursts were great but the sides were not my thing. I've been going to Die BierStube regularly for at least 6 years and, what can I say, I love the place. The beer is what keeps me coming back time and time again, but I also enjoy the atmosphere and great people who work there. I consider myself a weisse bier connoisseur and my most favorite of all time is definitely Hacker Pschorr Weisse. Unfortunately, it seems to be one of the most sporadically supplied German beers and I often have a hard time finding it. With that said, there's only been a handful of times I've gone to BierStube and they didn't have it. Thank you. The place always has a great vibe and the tall ceiling makes it feel nice and open. The two dart boards in the back are great for a few quick games or to fill the night. The faces behind the bar have changed over the years, but there always seems to be someone that's friendly and familiar. Pretzels, bratwurst sandwiches, landjaeger... I really liked the relaxed atmosphere and was really an easy place to relax and have a good beer (all German beers). The server was really easy to chat with as we discussed what beer would be to my taste, ended up trying 2-3 tastes before settling on one of the darker stouts. We ended up drinking the most expensive pour, but it was well worth it. Before I start this review, I want to let you all know that I just returned from a trip to Munich for Oktoberfest in Germany, so that's what I have to compare this place to. The venue is pretty realistic to what I experienced in Germany. There are large tables that encourage you to site with strangers, the staff were all dressed up in Oktoberfest attire, and there was music with people singing along. I came here for an Oktoberfest event, I don't think they dress up all the time. I ordered a beer and a sandwich, the pretzel bread was delicious. The servers and bartenders were very well organized for how packed the place was. I even switch seats twice to accommodate a larger group and they still had our checks and drink orders separated correctly. If you have a group of four, I would get the big boot to spit with everyone. It's a fun activity and it only came out to about $7 a person once you split it. I have to give them a shout out for great customer service the other night. I always enjoy coming to BierStube but they went above and beyond on Friday with excellent service and splitting up our checks. We were a group of 6. When we were done with our meal the server surprised us with preemptively giving us 6 separate checks! This rarely happens without asking and everyone really appreciated it. Sure we could have split it between cards and cash after getting our bill. We were planning on doing so. I think this really is harder for the server though so it makes sense to give us separate checks. She was so sweet about it, too! The bar was really busy and I know the workers were all slammed. I enjoyed my bratwurst platter ($7) and beer ($5.25 for a .5 liter) Their prices are very reasonable, especially for food. In the words of Toby Keith, I love this bar! read more

It's beer-o-clock at Die BierStube! I'm a big fan of this spot and love that it's nestled in a pretty dense residential area. If I lived closer it'd be an obvious watering hole. Having been here only a few times though, I still think it's a pretty awesome spot. Nice low tables with benches and booths, this place is ideal for large groups and loud people. TVs on the wall play sports, the food is tasty and if you're with some friends you can order the boot! The only bummer was that when I was here a few days ago it took forever to get table service. Typically this spot is slammed but it was only 3pm or so and there were only 4 or so other folks in the entire bar. Liked this little German pub. We had no issues with the service. We grabbed a nice dark-wood table, scoped the scene, and then made plans...for a Boot. We decided on filling our glass boot with Franziskaner Weiss (tried this at the PDX International Beer Fest). Holy smokes. When they brought our Franziskaner-Filled Footwear to the table, it was a bit intimidating. So the rules: Don't let the boot touch the table until it's empty, and the person who finishes the boot forces the person who handed it to them to pay the next round (wasn't going to be a problem for us--one round was enough). Oh, and don't slam your boot--or you pay for it! I'm not a musclebound person, so I got to work my biceps a bit for those first few rounds of passing the heavy boot (I needed the workout though). But overall, we finished the boot with no issues...well, my bro did get splashed in the face once, but if anything, that was hella-funny. We also had a pretzel with our brew, and that was a perfect compliment. All in all a good time was had a Die BierStube, and our evening was set off to a good start. read more

The service here is terrible. Sure, they are quick to get an initial order and serve a drink, but if you need anything else make sure you have a large dose of patience. Or be willing to not just flag down a passing waitperson (they never pass!) but be willing to interrupt a very intense gossiping session being held behind the bar to get some service. After coming here regularly for several months, I've had enough. Especially when they yelled that I hadn't paid my bill as I was leaving. The cash was on the table. This place has some amazing things on tap, their Spaten Optimator being my favorite. Another thing worth noting is their pretzel, it comes with some pretty serious mustard and is a great snack while drinking. The mood of this bar is very relaxed and has a nice feel to it. It's kind of small and finding seating can be a challenge. Most of the time if you ask nicely to share a table the other patrons will be kind and gladly move over. Another reason this place is pretty amazing is because they serve beer from a giant glass boot (if you order it). I can't say I've drunk out of many glass boots before and this was quite a fun experience for me. I confess: I'm having a love affair with Händlmaier's Bavarian Sweet Mustard. I carted jars and jars of it home from Munich, and have a huge problem finding a proper bavarian sweet mustard in the states. Hence, I frequent German bars in search of the elusive Bavarian sweet mustard, and of the best of the Bavarian weiss beers. The selection of German establishments in Seattle is pretty much limited to Chris Navarra's three: Prost!, die BierStube, and Feierabend. Having frequented all three of them many times, the König of them is definitely the Die Bierstube. It wins out by having a larger space, selection of German beers, and way more attentive service. Most importantly, DB wins by (1) having Franiskaner Weissbier on tap; and (2) having the best sweet mustard to accompany my carb-induced pretzel coma. I'm pretty sure the servers must think I'm nuts when I keep asking for mustard refills. Wait...crap--I'm reviewing the restaurant, not the mustard. Sorry--back on task. The space is great for large groups--I've come here for numerous gatherings and celebrations. If you get here early in the evening (think 6 or 7), you can generally snag one of the huge booths, where you can hunker down and drinks liters of beer for the rest of the evening. Speaking of liters of beer: yes, they do have boots. No, you can't put ANY type of beer in it. Yes, there is a $50 deposit in case you break it. And the rule that the boots can't touch the table until it is finished is in full effect. And when you cheers, you clink glasses, say 'Prost!', and you must look each other in the eyes. The food is about as good as it gets for German fare around here. Love me some Curry Wurst. Pairs well with the Spaten Optimator. I've had better sauerkraut, but it's pretty solid here as well. It used to be that the small part of German blood in me got to come out and play once a year. That once a year was Oktoberfest in Leavenworth. No more. A couple of years ago, a couple of my coworkers got together and got me a gift card for the Prost! family of German pubs, so the future hubs and myself decided to go get our German beer on one random Tuesday date night. Tuesday dinner time is not the busiest time on earth at Die BierStube, and that's okay with me. It could have also been that it was a Tuesday dinner time during spring break so the college was kind of empty...but it doesn't matter, it just meant that we found a table pretty quickly. Note: tables come with benches, so if you're looking for a plush seat to sit on for the next several hours, you're barking up the wrong tree. (If your tush gets uncomfortable, it just means you need more beer. In which case, man up and order another pint.) It took about ten minutes of the two of us sitting there, beers in hand, before we both admitted to missing Oktoberfest. Food menu is small but tasty. The holy trinity of brats, pretzels, and sauerkraut are represented - expect to see some mustards on the side. Service could be friendlier, but they are unobtrusive and fast. Drink menu is really about the beer so if you're thinking a glass of wine might be nice, this may not be a first choice for you - while they have some wines, the collection is pretty small. Same with mixed drinks. This is the place where you get your beer on. HOWEVER, I would recommend considering the infused whiskey. Sitting in a big glass jar in the center of the bar, it caught my attention right away and I wound up ending my evening with a glass (ice on the side). The whiskey is infused with thick slices of oranges, cinnamon sticks, and raisins and the overall flavor is slightly spicy, slightly sweet, very citrusy. They have a really nice selection of German beers to choose from. Most come .3L .5L 1L. I ordered the Dinkle, cuz it was fun to say and I like big dark chocolaty beers. Although another of our party had a different stout which I liked better. Also, there was a beer that smelled just like beef jerky, I kid you not. Along with beer they had a decent selection of hard alcohol from which to choose. Service was good and boy did they know a lot about German beers. He took our orders, scurried off and returned with a beautiful presentation of beverages, each in their own distinct glass. The pub itself was very cozy. Die Bierstube is a beer paradise for me! As my drunk birthday boy kept shouting when we were celebrating there last night, "Nothing lighter than an amber!!!!!". Extensive, eclectic collection of flavorful German beers. The atmosphere itself isn't really Hofbrauhaus authentic (and I've been to the real one, holla back Munich) but I don't care, they have fun communal wood tables/benches and a good, random playlist of mostly 80s/90s pop hits. And yes, you can drink out of a gigantic boot o' beer. I didn't play that game, a handful of my friends were sharing a couple of them but I'd rather pick my own beer and not keep gulping other peoples' backwash. I had Spaten Optimator and Erdinger DunkelWeizen. They were both awesome, but the Optimator was, well, the optimum. So next time your frattastic friends suggest going to the Ram, do them a favor and drag them to Die Bierstube instead. read more

Die BierStube is a lot like Feierabend, with the same decor, same beers on tap, same food and same crappy service. I don't understand the place, first round we had a waitress, she was nice, friendly and helpful with beer selections. Once more people showed up she was no where to be found, we were required to go to the bar to get our drinks. But at the end of the night she was right there to make sure the check was taken care of. They do have good tasty bier but that's about it. Plus only one toilet for the ladies room, waiting in line to tinkle is not my idea of fun especially after being snubbed by the wait staff. read more

Liked this place until the 3rd visit when the bartender complained of the tip being less than 10% of the total bill. My fiancee & I usually tip 20% or more when we know the service is good. Although we tipped the bartender less than 10% on our card, we tipped their busboy in cash because he was nice enough to clean up our table without hesitation regardless of the accident that was made by a friend who couldn't tolerate alcohol. When I order some good bier I expect it not to have 3 inches of foam on top, I paid for bier not foam!! One of the best places for authentic German beer and food. The atmosphere is great; even if you show up on a crowded Friday or Saturday night, you can always find an empty spot on one of the benches and make new friends. It's recommended! My first time here, I decided to try the Erdinger Dunkel Weissbier since the menu glaringly labeled it "Anna's Favourite!" And what do you know, it has been my favourite ever since. There is a pretty good selection of cocktails, though I have never tried them, what with the abundance of delicious German beers at my disposal. If you're brave (or bring enough friends), get yourself a 2-liter glass boot of the beer of your choice and down it! I was equally impressed with the food. Amazing sausages, doughy pretzels and hearty soups, all (but the last, maybe) served with a helping of Landbrot and the best mustard you'll ever try. It was a slow night and for whatever reason the bartender was not in a good mood. Seemed really impatient and gave off a hostile vibe. Whenever I experience a situation like this I always try to give people the benefit of a doubt (maybe he had a bad day, maybe I came off a certain way, etc.) and just try to be polite. Die Bierstube is one of four sister bars with a German theme here in Seattle, and it's my second favorite of the bunch (although I haven't tried the new Prost ! in West Seattle yet). I like the spaciousness of the place, in comparison to Greenwood's tiny Prost, since I always seem to be able to get a seat here. The beer selection is larger here too, but as many have pointed out the taps don't rotate, ever, but that may be a good thing if you like reliability and high quality. Just like Prost there's a few food offerings, but it's simple stuff like pretzels and brats that are not full plates, fortunately Roosevelt is lush with great restaurants if you're looking for more than a snack. The only thing that gets a bit tiring is the crowd, which can sometimes skew towards drunk frat-boys during peak hours, so if you don't mind the ear-splitting "WOOOOO''s" of guys trying to impress their dates by drinking the entire contents of "The Boot" then you'll do fine. The staff here on my last visit was AMAZING, which is always nice and really made me want to come back soon. read more

If you're looking for a very local bar that serves great food and beer, look no further than Die BierStube. You can find this bar at the border between the University District and Ravenna neighborhoods. It's not too long of a walk coming from either place. When you walk in, you'll find a very communal space with large wooden tables. Feel free to sit down at any open seat and make new friends - it's expected in the culture of this bar. In terms of food, the menu features many types of sausages prepared in different styles. Although it's not terribly authentic, it's the closest you can get in Seattle to the real Germany. If you're a beginner, go for the Bratwurst mit Saurkraut to keep it simple. They have some of the best sauerkraut in town. Kitchen closes at 10:00pm but pretzels are served until closing. If you're a German veteran, take note to avoid the Curry Wurst. They're nothing like what you're expecting. Die BierStube has a great variety of beers you can get in .3L, .5L, or 1L glasses. You can also opt for "The Boot" which is a giant glass boot (approx. 3L) filled with any beer of your choice. The tradition is that you must pass the boot along to everyone at the table and continue drinking until there's nothing left. Until it's finished, the boot is not allowed to touch the table. Even though Die BierStube is located near a University, don't come here expecting a very douchey crowd. The fratty types don't tend to wander so far north. Nope, the bartender said "Wow, you actually know German.." ...his response was slightly disappointing. They didn't offer anything non-alcoholic and under "wein" it said that we had to ask our server. I am not much of a beer drinker, but my whole childhood was in Germany and my mother is Dutch, so German food is the closest to home cooking I can get. Their sausages were really good, I highly recommend. I personally think it's a little on the pricey side ,but considering there isn't much selection for German food in the city it's worth it. So this place would totally get 5 stars if the service were a tad better...but whatever. My sister-in-law took all of us out for a night of drinking while we were in Seattle...and this is the first place she took us since almost all of us are beer lovers! The catch to the boot is you have to put down a $50 refundable deposit in case you break it and the rule of the boot is...is that you can't put the boot on the table until it is gone!! So that made for a fun night of drinking some German beer! We had another boot...but I can't remember what was in it...my brain was already a little buzzed from that first boot! =] And we tried a pint of one of Vani's (sister-in-law) favorite beers that they carry. The atmosphere was dark and woody...kind of how I would picture a German bar to feel like. The crowd can be a little confusing sometimes, since the vibe is divey and woody and the clientele seems to include lost sorority girls who thought they were headed for Trinity.
