This is one of my favorite places in the neighborhood. Small business owners that pour their heart and soul into their business and work so hard to create a great atmosphere. I love the cavernous bar area, where you get a great selection of beer and wine. The beer is the coldest in the city, so refreshing! The food is great with a diverse menu. People come to play games, eat great food with friends and family. I obviously can't say enough about this place. A cafe attached to Third Place Books and a underground hangout. What a hidden gem! I didn't even know this place existed, but went here after the cafe above (cafe arta) was closed. A friend and I needed to do homework and the person working there, Justin, was super helpful, welcoming, and accommodating! So I finally came here for a drink tonight (a Tuesday). It was almost a full house once again, but this time my friends and I were looking for a place to have a drink and the Third Place Pub had what we needed. We ended up sharing a pitcher ($15) of the Maritime hefeweizen and I found it quite tasty. The crowd was a mix of college-aged folks and people who were in their 40s/50s. The music was folky-sounding Irish or Scottish music, but I'm not sure if this was the norm or because it's St. Patrick's Day. Either way I kind of dig that kind of music so it was fine by me. At one point my friends went out for a smoke, so I spent the time checking out the books and games they had in their bookcase. I ended up grabbing Beer for Dummies and learning a few new things. Sweet! Overall the atmosphere seemed pleasant enough, but it seemed like a better place to visit with a group of friends (or alone if you're looking to read/study/work) rather than depend on meeting someone new there (unless you go for an event like the "Science on Tap" discussions). The staff seemed friendly enough and were around when we were ordering, but after that we had to get up from our table when we had a question and when we wanted our bill (thankfully there was a guy at the bar almost the whole time). Over-all service was alright, but... probably would have seemed better if we sat at the bar (instead of a table) or had a big group so we could get a few pitchers (and/or wine) and then be satisfied for a long while. read more

It's a decent place for outdoor dining when the weather is nice, as you can go to the patio outside of the bookstore and drink beer and eat pub fare/greek food. For indoor, the pub is pretty cozy and nice (sort of reminds me of a more upscale college Inn Pub experience from my Uni days) - used to play boardgames there, but haven't done that since covid. The food itself is pretty average as is the beer selection - not bad but nothing to write home about - but more than does the job for a neighborhood hang out. read more

I walked into the bar in the afternoon intending to do a little work and drink beer. The place was empty other than two guys at the bar, talking cars with the bartender. I set up at a table, bartender didn't look up so I went to the bar to catch his attention. He continued chatting cars and didn't look at or welcome me to the bar, much less ask what I wanted to drink. I waited a bit, the conversation continued and i didn't feel like working to pay for a beer. I understand why the bar is empty, the bartender is an ass. Won't be back, plenty of nice places to grab a beer with good service in Ravenna. read more

Met an old friend here after meaning to come by for years. The entrance has always looked so cool, and the interior did not disappoint. Beautiful wood walls, tables, chairs, all cut from whole pieces of lumber. So cozy. Pretty empty just before happy hour, but the space filled up quickly with locals as 5 PM came. Beer selection is solid. Nothing super unique, but a selection of good standbys that didn't bore me. Service isn't super attentive, but I don't mind the casual vibe. After all, what's the rush? I can't speak for the food, but this place has atmosphere and beer nailed down. Definitely will be coming back for another soon. read more

A rustic and quaint pub beneath Third Place Books, this is the perfect place to hang out with a craft beer and a book. We came during happy hour (3-5) and shared the cheese plate, charcuterie, hummus, and falafel plates for a late lunch. I had the Breakside Wanderlust as well. The food was delicious and the service was fast. The lunch and dinner menu is extensive and the happy hour menu features smaller plates at great prices--ideal for sharing a few things. My husband and I have had a fondness for this spot for years. The service was a little quirky sometimes, the food was always a little overpriced, but the servers were friendly and the atmosphere was cozy and smart. The new ownership seems to have taken the IQ of this spot down about 30 points. By this, I mean the music is off (think loud trashy pop in an earthy den), the decor looks like someone raided the home section of a suburban TJ Maxx, specials are advertised on random neon-paint-penned signs, and the general vibe just feels...weird. Servers were okay, trying to be nice. But not a homey, classy quality of service like before. Bummer. read more

Things have changed a lot in Seattle in the last four plus years. Namely, food standards have gotten better and better and yesterdays spots have in some cases, failed to live up to the rapidly expanding Seattle food scene. Case in point, although I've been a regular here (its in my neighborhood) tonight I ate on the patio outside at the Pub at Third Place on and had a pretty terrible experience. From spilling two drinks on us (and damaging books we just purchased inside their store, but this I wasn't too concerned about) to being left for long stretches on the patio without any anyone from the pub in sight, to debating whether the medium rare burger I ordered and sent back was actually medium rare (it wasn't, mostly grey very little pink) with a server, to receiving a second burger that was far too rare to eat when the kitchen decided to send something out that was just shy of raw, I can't recommend this spot in good conscience. Certainly, its a no-go for a solid burger. Skip it. You can do better. The bar has gone up in the Seattle food scene and there are many very solid burger spots out there and most are familiar with how to cook a succulent medium rare burger and serve it up with style and alongside craft beer on tap. My last thought for you Third Place: if you are offering a $16 burger (yep, that's the price) you'd better be super solid on how to prepare it. read more

This is one of the hidden gems in Seattle. Their breakfast is spectacular!!!! They top Portage Bay in freshness and taste. The waiters are amazing and hard working. They even remember your name or the drinks you like. Arta is a DOLL ! A unique example of the old country while importing flavor and hospitality to America. I'm in food heaven when I go there. Didn't even know this was here, but it's really cool. There's a great bookstore upstairs, which is probably obvious to everyone who has ever heard of Third Place Books in either location (for some reason I had thought they were only in Kenmore). There's a nice cafe upstairs along with it, with a big coffee counter and espresso machine. This place fills up with tons of kids at big family tables. Downstairs, there's a separate entrance on 65th, and there's also a staircase down from the cafe. There's a ton of pretty wood paneling, and the tables and benches have a nice rough-hewn look to them as well. It's kinda packed in, with a ceiling at basement height and tables close together. Feels homey, though--not cramped. The staff is pleasant and funny, and they're right on point throughout the meal no matter how busy it is, or how long you stay. They have a two-page menu of greek food from Vios upstairs, and they have a dozen good beers on tap--all thoughtfully chosen craft beers, too. They also serve wine and a few other things. The prices are very fair, and the food's really good. Dig everything about this place. Definitely be back. read more

I thought I'd somehow broken the time-space continum and had entered my best friends basement rumpus room some time around 1977. The big slabs of polished wood on the walls, the burl tables and the bar in a basement all have a good mellow 70's vibe. The only thing it needed was a Cheech and Chong album playing in the background. It's a good comfortable tavern with food available from the Honey Bear upstairs. A good mix of college students, neighborhood folk and a few stragglers from the bookstore upstairs. No bells and whistles here but it's a nice place to hunker down in a good conversation with a few pints and maybe some nachos. read more

Like so many before us, we've driven by this spot several times - today we finally decided to stop for a beer. The Pub at Third Place is now in our rotation. Casual setting, friendly staff, a more mature crowd and solid food. Good selection of brews on tap and several by the bottle to ensure that there is something for everyones taste. Wine - they have that as well. No full bar from what I could tell. What I also liked is the option to eat heavy or light, depending on your hunger level. We went light with a trio of tapenades. Other dishes where more along the line of pub grub such as fries, burgers plus several upper-scale entrees. I suggest stopping in for a beer, take a peek at the menu and see what you think. What a wonderful and hidden bar! Imagine if somebody carved out a cave in the trunk of giant tree and put a bar in it... It's awesome with natural wood slabs everywhere! We came in for happy hour. The food was delicious; order the fries. As someone else mentioned, the beer list made of good beers and there's a rotating selection. Happy hour means $1 off pints and $2 off pitchers. Our bartender's name was Frank. He was good to us. There were a few others in the pub, but we got our orders quickly. Near the bar you'll find lots of books and games including Settlers of Catan and Cards Against Humanity! I can't wait to go there again! Oh... So let me premise this by saying that the the Pub at Third Place is where my monthly Reading Club meets (Yes, I'm in a Reading Club. Yes, that's nerdy. Yes, I love it. Now let's continue with the review...). So over the past couple of years, this place just becomes familiar, but for those of you who are new to the place, here's my take on this fine establishment. The Pub is on the bottom floor of Third Place Books, a local bookstore chain in the Puget Sound. If you enter through 65th, you are automatically in the Pub. If you enter through 20th, you have to go through the book store, through the cafe, and then downstairs to the Pub. Tricky, I know. The ambiance is homey, comforting, with just a little soft lighting to finish it off. Personally, I come here for the ambiance and the food. The Pub serves Greek fare, but I tend to stick to the appetizers. Personal faves include the Truffle Buttered Popcorn - it's mouthwatering - and the Bucket o' Fries with whipped feta. Paired with a glass of red wine, and OMG....I can live on this for days! Downsides: Service is so-so, sometimes staff is super friendly, sometimes it seems like that worst day ever. As a stickler for service, this sometimes bothers me, but since I'm only ever ordering appetizers and I've been doing so for the past couple of years, I try to shrug it off. Also, their happy hour is only from 3-5pm. Like really, some people get off work at 5! Despite the downsides, which can be big deal for some, I'm still a fan. A couple of people used the word "hobbit" in their reviews, and since I, also, am going to make use of the noun, this confirms one of my fondest theories about patterns in the universe. To wit, despite chaos theory, there *are* patterns in the universe and when you recognize one you should take note, and if appropriate, take action. Action in this case would be to take yourself to the hobbit pub. Why a "hobbit" pub? Because it's low ceilinged, cozy, has great wood tables and just seems like the kind of place Merry and Pippin would spend most of their free hours while Sam spent time with his family after Frodo parted the veil. It isn't happy hour that draws people here since the place doesn't get really crowded until after that's over. It's a place to read a book, play a game of cards, get some knitting done, chat with friends, eat dinner and and surf the net while having a beer, all of which I've seen in the hobbit pub. The food comes from the Honey Bear Bakery upstairs and I was recently asked, in the middle of a conversation, if I wanted some time to make out with the bacon in my BLTA sandwich before resuming the chit chat. It was tempting, but a swig of my Rogue Hazelnut Brown brought me back to my senses. I've been coming here for years, and the experience is usually pleasant. They have Old Rasputin on tap (YUM!) and the food is pretty good - not great, but like I said, they have Old Rasputin on tap. Many things can be forgiven if you have old Rasputin on tap. Last night I was starving, figuratively speaking of course, so I ordered the Lamb Souvlaki Plate. It's one of the most expensive items on the menu, so it should be a hearty portion of food, right? Right? Well, the plate arrives and it is a tiny portion - the "two skewers" of lamb is one skewer broken in half with 8 tiny little pieces of lamb on it - no more than 2 ounces of meat. This is served with a small pile of lettuce, two pitas cut into quarters, and a dollop of tzatziki. That's it. There is less food on my plate then would typically be in a gyro - and those cost half as much. I expressed my concerns, and tried to convince our waitress that this was a tragedy - everyone else at my table had a meal that was more substantial, more appetizing in appearance, and cost less! She offered to make it right, and by this I guess she meant that she would bring me some small sides to accompany my meal (hummus and olives) and then she would charge me $7 for said sides. Well I didn't feel there was value in my meal at $16, and I definitely felt cheated at $23. I guess I will have to get my Old Rasputin from a bottle from now on. Bah Humbug! read more

As I reflect on my time spent at the Pub at Third Place, one word comes to mind: Wood. There's wood everywhere! Doors, walls, tables, ceiling. All the same matching glossy wood. At first it was cool, but after a while I started to become afraid I was stuck in a horror movie scene at a lumber mill or something. But aside from the decor, I really liked this place! It's dark and cozy (no windows at all, in fact) and features a wall of books and games that you can borrow during your stay. The Boy and I opted to play Skip-Bo, our favorite card game, and even though we don't need to talk about who won, it was still a good time. We didn't have any food, but it looked like they had some good appetizer options for pretty cheap, and I saw a few yummy looking main dishes being delivered as well. Make sure you check this place out while it's still winter; I don't think it would have the same appeal when it's nice outside. read more

Good beer, good crowd (when it's not empty -- aka weekdays), good rustic-cabin ambience, lots of ratty old used books lining the walls. I wanted to like this place, but it was pretty bad. I came here with 3 other friends. We're all grad students, so we came in on a Sunday afternoon with computers and books and stuff. The place we had been at previously closed, so we walked to the nearest spot. There were two other people with computers in there, so us being there didn't seem sketchy, especially in the middle of the afternoon. The waiter/bartender came over and handed us menus. He then proceeded to disappear for about 10 minutes. He came back and someone in our group asked what the soup of the day was. He had to go upstairs and check. Another 5 minutes. He told us, then walked away for another 10ish minutes. I was really confused. Maybe he was trying not to bother us? Maybe he thought we weren't going to order anything? We finally ordered. I got the falafel plate and it was borderline gross. I ate it, but It was Ehh. Also, I got 4 tiny pieces for $5 (happy hour special) which was steep for such a small portion and that was the special price. There were a few pieces of shredded lettuce too, but it's hard to eat shredded lettuce with a fork. Lol With tax and tip, I was at nearly $8 for a plate of rabbit food. Should have just gotten a beer. Ugh also, there was really terrible dad rock blasting from the speakers. We almost left because of the music. I didn't get any drinks, but the beer list was decent. Place was cute, but confused about why the service was so bad. They did have outlets, which was handy for using my lap top. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing and came in at the wrong time. I adore this pub. It's tucked below Third Place Books, and it looks like it'll be dim and tiny on the inside, but you're mistaken. It's well-lit and covered with beautiful wood paneling and furniture, from the rough-hewn tables to the bar. The beer list is extensive and delicious, and the menu is even more so. "Mediterranean food" has, as of late, unfortunately suffered at the hands of the masses and become, in many locations, greasy and unappetizing. Not here! Third Place serves impeccable options by the lovely Vios Cafe. Personal favorites include: the dip sampler (three delicious spreads, like kalamata olive or feta-pepper), chicken souvlaki, or the special I had last time: roasted dates, smoked almonds, and marinated olives. So. Tasty. The bartenders are friendly and helpful, there are board games to play, and plenty of seats (though it does fill up). What more can you ask for? read more

I often stop by this place after work to get a beer and read. The bartenders/servers are very friendly and attentive, the beer selection is good (although I'd like to see the taps change more often, but I've only been going there a few months so I'm not sure if it's something they ever do) and the food is good when I've had it. I wish there were more two-top tables, or bar seats for those of us who go alone and don't want to take up a giant table or sit at the mildly awkward, albeit insanely beautiful reclaimed wood, community tables. The bar and smaller tables fill up fast and I feel like a jerk sitting at the big ones alone! I love how well lit the pub is, as it would be a really good place to work on writing amidst the low murmur of table top games and meetings. read more

One of the best low-key, warm, homey spaces in Seattle. Tucked underneath Third Place Books, my girlfriend and I refer to this bar as "The Hobbit Hole" and it's easy to see why. The outside door is made from gnarled wood, the tables are beautiful wooden slabs, the bar is (good) beer and wine only, and the vibe is welcoming and friendly. They have board games, table service from someone in plaid, and a greek restaurant upstairs that serves fries with whipped feta that are wonderful. Firestone's Wookey Jack, a favorite of mine, is usually on tap and the selection covers a lot of ground stylistically. The only negative thing I can say is that I have had a flat pint here, though I don't know if that's their fault or the brewery that produced the beer. This is a conversation bar where the music is never too loud or intrusive, the service is adequate and quick, and the room is upbeat though intimate. This is a place to talk with friends or break out the Settlers of Catan over a few tasty pints. Seattle needs more bars like this one. read more

I took my two kids there last week for a quick dinner. Our waiter couldn't have been less interested in actually being interactive. He was pleasant and friendly with the other tables, so I'm going to guess that it was the presence of kids and a presumption that said kids would somehow cause a lower tip? Not really sure, but I have to say that for once in their lives, my kids were actually pleasant and well-behaved. I went here for the first time last night (which was a Saturday). I walk in to the basement of the Third Place to find lots of groups of 20-30 something year olds sitting around at oak tables....most of them are sharing pitchers and playing games (gin rummy, trivial pursuit, strip poker....haha made up that last one). Many of the people hear look like they have a college education.....how do I know this? I dont, just go with it. Anyways my group sits down with a pitcher of Hacker Pshorr and pitcher of some other amber beer. The selection on tap is well rounded. I get up to get some games off the shelf and notice a group in the back all with their laptops out, so I guess they have inet here. I grab the cards and make some loud obnoxious comment about how frikin stiffling hot it is in this joint. A young lad stares at me and looks like he wants to say something but just cant muster up the courage. Side note....ladies if you want to pick up nerdy shy men this is your place, there are lots for the picking. So I bring the cards back to the table and I suggest to the group that we play Knights at the Roundtable and the group scolds me and says "no way Courtney, this is not the kinda place you play drinking games!" After feeling like a child getting caught with their hand in the cookie jar I opted for scrabble instead. So I lost miserably at scrabble and I had no music to enjoy while loosing. Come on barkeep turn up the crappy jazz so everyone can hear. Therefor don't come to this bar if you want to play drinking games. Do come here if you want a quiet evening of card games/board games while drinking tasty brews. Oh and they close at 12 every night except for Friday. read more

This is the place where all your nerd and beer loving fantasies come alive. Since this is below a bookstore, this place has cool science topics being discussed every week AND ITS OVER A BEER!! How cool is it to see a drunk scientist discuss math (pretty much the most boring topic EVER) and science to a equally drunk crowd (or at least have lowered inhibition)? Overall the beer selection is awesome, the food is delish (small plates mind you) and the atmosphere is quiet so you can really talk about more important things in live (like taking over the world). But this place is just way overpriced for what you get. The flavor was alright, but the portion was sad and it definitely tasted like $7 or $8 food you could and should find somewhere else. Save a lot of money and enjoy better quality at Schwarma King in the U District, or if you want to pay the same price as here and get a better value then go to Mediterranean Kitchen in Bellevue. read more

By far one of my favorite pubs in Seattle. This place is definitely a neighborhood bar which it knows and has embraced. Service is usually very relaxed and sometimes it takes awhile. There is consistently an excellent selection of beer on tap, and I have never been disappointed with the food even if it is a bit spendy. I love to come here with my wife for happy hour and a game of cribbage. Kids are also welcome, provided they are not in the bar area. With the bookstore upstairs, the pub is great spot to hang out and grab a beer. read more
