First visit to DeWolf Tavern. Once a month I take my family out to a new restaurant that we have not tried. This dinner happen to be for my 64th birthday. We were a party of seven adults and two grandkids. Let me start with the server was great no complaints. Now the bad news 6 of us ordered the filet mignon my order the baked stuff lobster and one other the salmon with my grandson ordering pasta wit butter(hard too mess that up). All the steaks were very dry with mashed potatoes with no flavor. As for my wife's lobster it was so baked it was impossible to garnish all the meat from the shell another very dry meal. Timing on the food was long which I attribute the the dryness of the food. So sorry to report this was about the worst $800.00 meal I ever had. Not returning any time soon. To bad great location. One of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in a long time - food, service, management, premise - all 1-star. Ordered Bloody Mary's to start (only drank 1/3 each, not great tasting mix), ordered a French Press coffee (bad, and served without any sugar, cream, etc). Asked for cream, and they brought out a small tin, but the cream looked odd and when I poured it into my coffee, a clump came out. Ordered a sandwich, and the menu said that you could substitute a different side for the house made chips (that came with the sandwich) for an additional $3. So I ordered a sandwich and swapped the chips for a different side. The food was nothing to write home about either. When I got the bill, I was charged full price for the sandwich $11, full price for the side (pasta) $8, and an additional $3 for red sauce, $22 total. When, according to their menu, and according to their waitress, with who I asked to verify before I ordered (and she said 'yes,') I should have only been charged $11 plus $3 for the side substitute, $14 total. There was no upcharge for pasta sauce either that I could see on the menu. When I asked the waitress, she went to speak with someone about it, she came back and said that the chef recently changed the menu and we were accidentally given an old menu, and the price is what it is now (even though she told me otherwise when I verified with her before I ordered). Any good, decent restaurant would have admitted they made a mistake, and made right by it. Because that is the right thing to do! A few minutes after I asked the question about my bill, the table next to us asked the same question about their bill. And then the table next to them asked the same question about their bill! Can't make this stuff up. The waitress went back to ask someone about it again (she said 'the chef', and her answer was the same...The menus have changed, you were given old menus, and you're not allowed to change sides for $3 any longer and the price is what it is.") The restaurant refused to admit mistake or comp the pricing errors. What a way to avoid repeat customers, I certainly will never come back to this restaurant. Additionally, not once did the manager or chef (which is who the waitress said changed the policy and was telling her to hold the line) come to the patio to talk to their befuddled and annoyed customers at three different tables. Another table said, 'well, fine...give me three orders of chips then, because I paid for those.' It was truly an unbelievable restaurant experience... Would highly recommend you try some of the more highly rated restaurants in the area! read more

The place was lovely- all dark wood and old English vibes. We both ordered seafood- grilled swordfish with a veg and grilled scallops w rice The swordfish was good and a good size piece That was fortuitous as I gave half to my husband. His scallops were inedible- had that salty chemical taste of being frozen. Or some kind of preservative. There was one other couple in the place, but our server was not attentive. No bread, had to ask for salt and pepper. We did tell her about the scallops which were uneaten on the plate, but they were still on the bill. So, we will not be back We do have friends who go there a lot, so may have been a bad night. read more

The food is ok..kinda.. Out of eight things that I've tried most have been bland and underwhelming. Do not order any curry because they are all bland. I can't believe a curry can be bland but they are here. I tried the mussels, no flavor and they don't use Thai chilies in it they use poblanos, lamb curry was super bland and chicken was ok but weird and the Brussel sprout hash was bland and sad, very dissatisfied. The chowder had little to no clams and full of uncooked potatoes. The duck confit was bland and flabby, the skin was not crispy at all. The chicken empanada was good though. The side pasta was good. I think it used to be good but 90 percent of what I've tried has been bland and expensive. I can't figure out how you make curry bland but they do. A lot of good ideas on menu but execution is very bad. Nice ambiance but very underwhelming. I really wanted to like this place. read more

We were really disappointed by Dewolf Tavern. It always looked like a cool place but it underwhelmed. We opted to sit out back. We could see the water from one corner but otherwise we just felt like we were sitting in a parking lot. Service was very slow despite there being multiple servers and not a lot of people. My lobster roll was barely a lobster roll. It was just lobster on a bun with mayo, aioli, and butter on the side. The chips were greasy and flavorless. I've had better lobster rolls from hotel restaurants (and certainly much better from Blount!) My husband said his sandwich was decent, but he had to pay extra to upgrade from chips to fries. I am writing to express my disappointment with the experience my son and I had at Dewolf Tavern on Christmas Day. On December 19th, I called ahead to inquire about making a reservation for Christmas Day. The person I spoke with was very pleasant and, although she was unable to find an available reservation, she suggested that seating at the bar or the high top tables would be a good alternative, as they were available on a first come first served basis. With that information in mind, my son and I planned our visit to Bristol, intending to enjoy a stroll along the water and stop by the Tavern for an early dinner. Upon arrival, we were greeted by two hostesses at the desk. I explained that we did not have a reservation but would be happy to sit at the bar or a high top tables. There were several empty bar stools and high top tables as only two people were sitting at the bar. We were informed that we could not be seated, as we were told, the manager had instructed that these areas were exclusively for guests of the hotel. I mentioned that I had received different information just a few days earlier, but there was no apology, nor was there an attempt to check with the manager or address the inconsistency in what I had been told. As a result we left, despite many open seats available. Given the lack of resolution and the way we were treated, I will not be returning to Dewolf Tavern nor recommending the Tavern to friends and family. read more

Really love this place but really disappointed today. We had breakfast on Sunday and our 20$ tab turned into a 130$ tab. My husbands card was apparently accidentally swiped for the wrong bill. Instead of telling us they voided it thinking it wouldn't show up and debit out of his account. WRONG. It debited out of his account and now we are waiting for the refund all while checks are bouncing. It took him calling today to figure out what the issue was. If they told us what happened on Sunday we wouldn't have gone and bought groceries on Sunday. This makes me not want to go here ever again because it feels like they really don't care. read more

We recently had a milestone birthday celebration for my mother-in-law at the DeWolf Tavern and it was a spectacular success. The food and ambiance were extremely lovely but the highlight of the event was the ease of working with Sherri Rego. From the beginning, Sherri was accessible, flexible, and incredibly patient with me as I was arranging things from another state. Sherri's vendor recommendations also assured that we had an amazing cake and beautiful flowers. Sherri went above and beyond by designing and printing menus and making sure our table was carefully arranged. At the event itself, Sherri made sure we were well taken care of and our gathering had plenty of staff. I had my wedding here and I cannot express my gratitude to their coordinator Sherri. You do not need a wedding planner if you go through them at Bristol Harbor Inn. Sherri was on top of everything from seating people at my ceremony to getting me another dinner when they took my plate while I was making rounds. Completely amazing person, and I am so thankful she was helping on my wedding day! The food was also outstanding from the apps to the dinners. Came here for dinner on a Friday night, wasn't very busy at around 9pm. Rustic interior and exterior, though not so fond of the history. Also came in expecting a very American menu but surprised to see Indian influences in there. Chef Sai Viswanath has done well incorporating naan pizzas, shrimp pakoras and cauliflower manchurian among the other more classic American dishes. Got the manchurian, garlic bread and lamb skewer for appetizers. The manchurian was pretty good, big chunks of cauliflower. I would've preferred more seasoning for the lamb and also the garlic was barely noticeable in the bread. Also got the tandoor lobster which was very good and you can taste the subtle spices in there. Extra 5$ for having it shelled off. Drink list is pretty good, ended up getting red wine. They have a decent selection of wines. The siena was quite good. Good experience overall, some dishes were good, some were Aok, also bit pricey. Love the view of the harbor from the restaurant. Overall, i'd say 3.5 stars. read more

I was so disappointed with DeWolf last night that I had to write a review. I am not a big fan of negative reviews, and as such we tried to speak with our server about our concerns, but that didn't go well, so here goes... We've been going to DeWolf Tavern for years. While service is sometimes slow, the food is always outstanding which is what brings us back time and time again. Our party of 3 arrived last night at 5:15 to celebrate my husband's birthday. While we didn't have reservations, they were able to seat us right away. It took about 20 minutes for someone to come over to ask us if we wanted a drink, which we promptly ordered. My husband's beer was flat and warm. We tried to get the server's attention but had no luck. After waiting for 45 minutes and having no one stop by to take our order, we stopped another server and asked if we could place our order. The server was kind enough to take our order, however ran off before we could even order another drink. 45 minutes after placing our order (still no offer to order another drink), we asked another server how long it would be. He told us that the sautéed lobster (which I ordered without rice) takes more than 30 minutes to cook. It would have been nice to know that when we ordered, but ok. When the meal came, my lobster was baked stuffed and had rice. The lobster was so overcooked that I couldn't get any of the meat out and I didn't get a cracker to crack the claws. The other two meals were served almost as ordered. After 25 minutes of trying to get someone's attention, we finally did and just asked for the check. When the check came, I asked the server if what I received was the sautéed lobster that I ordered or the baked lobster. His exact words to me were, "if you saw it on facebook or instagram, you would have known what it looked like...sorry if you misinterpreted the menu." We also tried to tell him that I had asked for no rice, that we would have loved another cocktail, no one came by to check on us, etc. but he didn't want to hear anything. We paid the bill and for the first time ever, we didn't leave a tip. When we got home and looked at the check, it actually listed the "baked lobster" so I what I received was NOT what I ordered and I was told that I misinterpreted the menu. I waited tables for years and have incredible respect for the restaurant service - especially with all that has happened over the last 2 1/2 years. That said, what happened to customer service? We are ok with slow service, but not NO SERVICE, or RUDE SERVICE. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be going back to DeWolf anytime soon. read more

Amazing dinner last night, as always. Everything was perfect.. the warm cozy atmosphere, the excellent service and delicious food and cocktails. We tried the Thai stuffed lobster over coconut rice which was a special menu feature. The lobster was filled with jumbo shrimp, scallops and snow crab claws in a delicious sweet and savory Thai coconut sauce. It had fresh cilantro and mint on top. Perfectly seasoned. We of course also had our favorite appetizer of all times - shrimp pakora. The fresh made naan bread completed the meal. The staff were on point last night. Chef Sai is by far our favorite chef in the area. His passion comes through in his great food and warm interactions with all guests. Great experience! read more

This is some of the best food with an Indian twist I have eaten anywhere. My daughter and I are foodies, but we don't like eating Indian food outside as we make it well at home. But this was truly memorable in terms of flavor and subtlety. We ordered the mini lamb chops as appetizers. The lamb was tender, cooked to a perfect medium rare and the chutney accompaniment was a perfect balance of sweet and spicy with notes of mint that complimented the lamb. I ordered the salmon with lentils and rice as my main course and my daughter ordered the lamb sandwich. Again, well balanced flavors and perfect combination of Indian notes with western preparation methods. Needless to say we polished every morsel. The dessert of cardamom crème brûlée completed our fabulous meal with just the right hint of sugar. Not overly sweet at all. We will be back for Saturday's brunch. My second time dining here. We came in the afternoon and Vinny, our most excellent host, set us up at a great table outside. As always, he is the best, making sure everything is perfect. Our server, Morgan, was also terrific, very attentive and personable. Oysters and Lobster roll were superb. My husband had the Pakora veggie fries and the shaved steak sandwich, which he loved (of course, I tasted these, and also loved). Just a great experience all around. You really need to check out the new menu at Dewolf. While still offering the old incredible standards like the Lobster Popover and the Steak sandwich on naan, you can now get an incredible pork shoulder or pork chop with acorn squash and risotto, lamp chops and fresh pasta made by Chef Sai and all for under $20 or $22 on the prix fix during the week. The attention to detail is incredible. We ate with the Always attentive Sandy at the bar tonight and had a lovely early dinner on a Thursday night. All of our food had a subtle kick in flavor that never overwhelmed but just enhanced the execution. Thank you Chef Sai for another beautiful experience. We just had another great experience with the appetizer menu. Chef Sai put calamari on the menu and I thought " why something so pedestrian Rhode Island? " well here is why. He took the batter from the pakora shrimp and put it on calamari with some peppers and oil. You cannot get something with this unique crunch or flavor somewhere else. We then split the blue cheese steak tip app and the scallops corn app. I cannot express the level of yum and each is $12 or less. Stop it! No one else can turn this out. Was told outdoor seating was on a first come first serve basis..However when we got there we were told all the outdoor tables were reserved. My granddaughter and I enjoyed lunch at DeWolf today. Ian, our waiter did a descent job in serving us. However, it took longer than expected for the food to be delivered. But the wait was (kind of) worth it. My granddaughter had the filet bistro, which had a great presentation and proved to be just as delicious as the presentation looked. I had the cod and clams with Portugese sausage. I believe this may be their signature dish. It too was delicious. The one negative - and therefore did not get 5 stars - was the dessert. We chose to split the chocolate cake. The "cake" was more like a cupcake with frosting on top and in the center. It had a stale texture to it and was almost tasteless. For $10 you would have expected more. NOTE TO MANAGEMENT: you should instruct your servers that if the customer is dissatisfied with the food served, you should delete it from the bill or the very least suggest a substitution. read more

To start, the Dewolf Tavern is in a beautiful location on Bristol Harbor. It is a restored historic building and the atmosphere is lovely. We went first for a dinner and then returned for Thanksgiving Dinner. For Thanksgiving dinner we had a five course meal. We started with an antipasto plate -- which, while pretty minimal, was nice with wine to start. Then we had a salad, my least favorite course -- just romaine with a very vinegary balsamic. The salad could have been so much more! Cucumber, tomato, olives, etc. etc. after all, it was for Thanksgiving. Anyway, then soup (butternut squash, very good) and finally our dinners. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach and brussel sprouts. Was good, I might have liked things in small dishes because all on one plate made everything taste kind of the same, but it was very nice. Dessert was sticky pudding with homemade ice cream. Absolutely delicious homemade ice cream! The service was excellent and all in all was very nice. read more

We've wanted and tried to like this place. The setting is very historic, charming, and atmospheric, but the food just doesn't measure up for us. It looks better than it tastes. 4 stars for the atmosphere and setting, 1 star for the food and the value (sandwiches are better than the entrees). DeWolf Tavern is a famous historic landmark. It's indisputably charming and a very cool place to visit. But after several visits, we can't see going back and find the food mediocre, confused, bland, and overpriced. It's admirable for a restaurant to try to be different and distinguish itself from others. There is no shortage of 'Continental', 'seafood', or just plain 'American' restaurants in the east bay. But we think DeWolf's is having an identity crisis, and the confused, bland food doesn't do it for us. It's like they don't know whether to make standard 'Continental' fare or Indian food, and the result is a confused and unsatisfying miss. On what will likely be our last visit, we tried a Frankenstein thali plate (called a 'vegetable plate' on the menu). It consisted of the usual sectioned metal platter with some basic garbanzo beans, bland cauliflower in some kind of flavorless brown sauce, some unidentifiable wilted greens with soggy carrot strips, a 'hash' consisting of overcooked Brussels sprouts and semi-soggy croutons, and completely flavorless yellow rice. For $24. Not satisfying. The lamb shank wasn't bad, but also rather flavorless. It was supposed to come with pearl couscous, but instead came with white rice that had no taste whatsoever. We thought it was worth about half the price. The sandwiches are fairly passable, no real complaints and probably the best things on the menu. But also nothing that's stood out about any of them either, other than better sandwiches can be had elsewhere in town. It's almost as if the management and chefs would like to serve 'Indian' food but are afraid of scaring people off, so they call it 'contemporary American cuisine' and try to sneak in some de-flavored and bland Indian-like twists in the execution. To us, it just results in confused food that isn't 'contemporary American' and also sadly fails at being identifiably 'Indian'. We think it should just commit and go one way or the other. We say, go for it! We LOVE Indian food and think an Indian place on the east bay would be great, but maybe there might not be enough local demand for it (which would be a shame). Right now, DeWolfs seems to us to be a lot of unrealized potential having an identity crisis. Come for the picturesque historic setting, have a passable sandwich, but we'll avoid the confused, bland, and over-priced other menu items. read more

DeWolf Tavern advertises aggressively that it serves $1 oysters all day on Mondays until they close at 10 PM. Today around 5:30 PM I walked the several blocks from home only to find out they were all out but were serving little necks at premium prices. No rain checks, no explanation. It was clear this was a bait and switch maneuver. My advice, go elsewhere. I shall never return and will discourage others from dining there. read more

If you are looking for a fancy, decadent meal in Bristol Dewolf Tavern is the place to go. The building itself is beautiful. It is a historical building with stone and brick walls. You can sit outside on the Bristol Harbor, outside on the patio or downstairs, which has more of a tavern feel or upstairs which is a little fancier with a fireplace. I love this restaurant and I always get the lobster popover! Everything is delicious there but that lobster popover is incredible! Yesterday I went there for Thanksgiving dinner, Thanksgiving 2020. The service was amazing, they let us take our time and did not rush us. The food was delicious and there was so much food. I felt safe there with the COVID precautions the restaurant took. The head chef even came out to wish us all a Happy Thanksgiving. That made us feel very special! I really felt like I was apart of the family there! We have enjoyed this restaurant in the past but this evening was far from good. The appetizers were very good but waited 20 minutes for a beer, after reminding the waitress. For entry, ordered the cod which was supposed to have chorizo, fingerling potatoes, neither were on the plate and the sauce was a watery, unreduced wine sauce. A totally unremarkable dish. My wife ordered the vegetable plate and it was cold and unappetizing. If good it would have been worth the $24 (really, for vegetables?) but badly prepared and cold, not so much. Service was almost non existent. I think our waitress was hiding from us, the dinner took 2.5 hours. Had to get up and ask the bartender for salt and spoons. Waitress must have been busy but it wasn't particularly crowded. We will definitely not come back, too bad, as we had enjoyed this place in the past. Impeccable service by Dan/Danny enhanced the great experience we had at dinner last night. Recommended by a Bristol resident, we were worried we might not find place as it was a Saturday evening on a glorious day in Bristol but we did. Wine was great and food even better. Naan sandwich with Brussels sprout and mozzarella was brilliant but maybe a spicy dipping sauce would have hit the spot. Husband ordered the seafood stew and we were surprised that we had to order some garlic bread separately. All in all great place, superlative service, good food but the tamarind chutney/dipping sauce was total miss and the mint chutney was missed with the sandwich.
