Solid north end local brew choice!! I've been here two different times over a year apart, and both times they had mostly darker beers on tap. Not mad about that, since there was still a lot of options within that. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed their two IPAs, since I'm not typically an IPA person. Hawaiian Handshake would have definitely been my pint-after-flight follow up choice--an IPA with some really interesting pineapple, honey and vanilla flavors that stood out in the IPA saturation happening in the microbrew world. The environment is really friendly and welcoming--definitely that of a super chill local neighborhood hangout that made me feel like I wanted to be a part of it. We spent the day visiting breweries in and around Indy. I'm glad we stopped in at Deviate. They are located in a small strip mall off of Michigan Road. The staff we spoke to were very nice and patient as we made our selection of beer. It's a cool little spot with plenty of seating. My buddy got their original/house IPA. Very tasty and easy to drink. I believe the brewery brought in people to show off some of their animals. My brother-in-law had a chance to dance with a large snake. Good times and great beer. read more

Man did I like this place! Lots of dark beers, but that's ok. There beers are very much backed up with flavor. In fact, finding "just a beer" might be tough with all the great flavors they have. Had both the Chirping Crickets and the Unearthly Estate and both were great! The bartender was a good dude. Obliged us with tastings and patient enough to let us figure out what we wanted. Venue plays some loud angry music, but kinda expect it. It's open, with lots of high top tables. Dog friendly. Had popcorn, but not made while we were there. Definitely go again. read more

This brewery has the best New England style IPAs in Indianapolis. We just moved here from the East Coast, and have discovered that most breweries in town have IPAs of the West Coast or East/West hybrid variety. This isn't necessarily a bad thing (we like West Coast style too!) , but we do miss our favorite NE IPAs! I had pretty much accepted we'd have to wait for NE IPAs when we stumbled upon Deviate. Their "In School Suspension" NE IPA was seriously exceptional! Not only that, but the atmosphere in the brewery is exactly the way we like it: board games, free popcorn, and overall extremely chill. Calling all dark beer lovers! Deviate is going to be your new go to! After seeing a line a mile long for Deviate and a recent beer fest, I knew they were on to something! I figured out exactly what the hype was after visiting their tap room recently. I am personally a huge fan of stouts and porters so was trilled to find multiple options on their menu. We didn't come here for the longest time because when we saw the menu and beer descriptions on Yelp, we were like ehhh...fruity beers, no thank you. Fortunately, we couldn't have been more wrong, because Deviate brews beers that are only fruity in the best possible sense of the word (not the scary gross overly sweet flowery hat kind of fruity). It took some convincing, but after seeing a photo of the menu chalkboard on Yelp, and noting that Deviate has a drawing of the Normal distribution on there, I figured, well we should give it a try. Give me some basic statistics and I'll fall for anything. Well, I'm happy to report that the flight of beers we tried were very good. They were only fruity in the sense that hoppy beers can have a grapefruity (and therefore, fruity) taste. They were good quality beers, all solid, flavorful, and interesting. And I give bonus points to the owners for trying to use stats to distinguish themselves from other breweries. Their aim is to create beers that deviate from the norm, and to that end, they had an ersatz equation for the Standard Deviation for a sample on their board. Oh boy was I skeptical. And oh boy was I wrong. I'm not a fan of fruity beers. I mean, I appreciate good beer. But covering a finely crafted beer with fruity sweetness is a little like covering a fine steak with ketchup! I understand that it may be your thing, but it's not mine. And so I didn't even want to try Deviate. Almost everything they had had at least some kind of fruit. And even the Yelp reviews played up the fruitiness. I thought, well, with so many other options in Indy, why bother with a place that I knew didn't cater to my style? Well, it turns out that Deviate does things right. They use fruit in their beers, but as an accent, not a cover. And as it turns out, that makes all the difference. Fruity beers are given a bad name by the sad majority. But Deviate deviates from the norm. And what they come up with is fantastic. The Pale Ale with tangerine zest was particularly good. Just the perfect touch of citrus leaves you unsure as to whether the real work is being done by the tangerine or the hops. But either way, who cares? It goes down well, singing as it goes. The same can be said of the Blueberry Stout. The jammy blueberry isn't a cover, but a complement -- giving the stout a dark richness that, in my view, a lot of ordinary stouts lack. One added bit of entertainment: The equation for standard deviation that they had written on the chalkboard was wrong. But don't take my word for it; my wife agreed, as did another woman who was sitting next to us. (She was a professor of something at IUPUI, but I don't remember what.) There was also another professor couple at the bar (Public Health and Anthropology from U. Colorado). So yeah, you get five professors in a room, give 'em a little beer, and they'll not only enjoy it and tell their friends, they'll correct your homework ... which is exactly what we did. Kudos to the staff for being patient and taking it all in good fun. Oh yes, and the wrong standard deviation equation? They apparently got it from someone from DePauw. My experience at Deviate was a pleasant one. I tried 4 different beers on this visit and discovered that most of the brews here are higher in alcohol content than I usually like. Not that it is bad to have a 7% abv content or higher, but I like to drink more than one beer and still walk around. These guys started brewing in a garage just like I am doing now. They have gotten a lot of attention for there experimentation with unconventional brewing methods. Got plans? You do now, you're going to Deviate. Trust me on this. Get here fast because once the word is out there will be droves of people & beer buses O-plenty lined up for these mind blowing brews. If it's your first visit order two flights so you can sample all of their offerings. Each flight of four will cost you $7. Again, trust me, you will want to try every last one of their beers so get two. These are not your standard IPA, Pale, Wheat styles these are beers brewed with a unique twist. They want to deviate "outside of the norm." Their goal I quote, "we are driven to find great combos of aroma flavor mouth feel in liquid form as possible." You hear that? They are making beers for one purpose and that is to blow your mind. Challenge accepted and appreciated Deviate Brewing! My husband and I were lucky enough to grab a seat at the bar and chat up with one of the owner/brewers Mike Orkey. What a fantastic guy! We learned that Mike Orkey and prior home-brew partner Greg Ortwein have been brewing for 18 years so they are definitely not newbies on the block. There were even tales told of block parties which included 20+ beers on tap with kegs kept chilled on ice in hot tubs. Oh.... to have been one of the luckies given the opportunity to taste all of Balls Brewing (their former home brewing name) creations for the past decade! Obviously, the proof of greatness is held in your glass and sipped slowly (most beers pack a punch of 9%-10% ABV). Some of the daily offerings included a Lactic Prophylactic Berliner Weiss (which allowed your choice of Blood Orange, Passion Fruit or Pomegranate syrup), a Hawaiian Imperial Stout (barrel aged with coffee and coconut), an amazing original gravity West Coast style IPA (Hop Supremacy), a Rye Porter Chipotle, and a Russian Imperial infused with 100 vanilla beans (Orkey's Vanilla). With an ever changing menu, by the time you visit many of these offerings may not be available however, I can guarantee you will find something exceptional in their line-up. Out of the 7 beers we tasted each and every one was amazing. This is a very bold statement that shouldn't be taken lightly. I'm very excited to see what comes next from this dynamic team including the fall release of a Barely Wine made with Butternut Squash and also a Sour in the works! They currently don't offer food but you can bring your own. There are also barrels of pretzels on each table that are meant for partaking. Beers can be purchased by the pint and growler. I generally enjoyed my visit to Deviate Brewing. The interior is a bit crowded and dark compared to a number of breweries I have visited, but the bartender was friendly enough and mentioned a couple brews that were available even though they weren't listed on the chalkboard behind the counter. I decided to go with a flight (4 five ounce selections) which have varying prices dependent upon the brews selected (anywhere between $8-14 for the four choices). Lots of Stouts and IPA's are featured. The four I chose were full flavored and I enjoyed 3 out of 4. The PB&C, a peanut butter imperial stout was full of peanut flavor and was quite good as a special choice. The Color Blind (blonde stout 7.8%) was another smooth and full flavored choice. I also enjoyed the Kuppa Kopi (coffee porter 5.7%) for its smooth coffee taste without the bitterness. I would drink each of these again! My only choice that didn't taste quite so appealing was the Victimless Crime, an oatmeal stout orange zest. Something about it seemed like an odd pairing the more I drank. Even though it was only 5.3%, it seemed more boozy than the others to me, and the orange flavor when paired with the other flavors in the profile, just didn't appeal to me. Still, 3 out of 4 ain't bad. It can be a little tricky getting in and out of the parking lot since it is located at such a busy intersection (96th and Michigan Rd). I managed to time traffic okay to head west on 96th to leave, but trying to get back on the interstate or to head east on 96th during rush hour would seem difficult due to excess traffic. If you are looking for a run-of-the-mill, boring, unimaginative, meh, tasteless beer -- keep moving on. Deviate is anything BUT normal or average. Even their slogan ("Deviate from the Norm") points to what they hope to accomplish...and they are far exceeding this mission in my opinion. Owners Greg and Mike have been friends and home-brewing companions for about 20 years and have just recently 'quit their day jobs' to throw themselves in to brewing and being at Deviate full time. Word spread and demand for their beers became so high that they had a short spell where they had to refuse growler fills (which admittedly broke their hearts) as they could not keep up with demand. What a GREAT problem to have! However, they hope to remedy this soon -- and they have been staying at Deviate 15-18 hours a day in order to get supply back up to meet demand. Greg and Mike are always around, friendly, genuine, and willing to talk about their passion for their craft. You can totally feel the love that goes in to each batch of brews here. Cliff notes version: -- You MUST make the trip up to 96th and Michigan to get in and try the amazing beer offerings at this place if you haven't already. Deviate is on the right side of the road heading north on Michigan just past the McDonalds -- You MUST try each of the brews they have as you will NOT be disappointed. Best suggestion is to get a flight or 2 and sample all that you can, even if it's not something you would typically order as they are straight up changing minds in there. -- The space/tasting room inside is dog friendly as there is no food prepared or served on site (see below). -- Pro Tip: Have a snack or order food to be delivered while you are there as their beers are no punks...they are up to/often exceed 10% ABV. There are menus on the tables for places that will deliver while you drink. Score. -- Deviate Brewing caters to a developed/more sophisticated palate and complex flavors abound... I guarantee you that you have never had craft beers like this. -- Try the Orkey's (Van)illa, Swiss Chocolate, Chocolate Orange, Strudel Cake, or Hawaiian Imperial Stout for velvety/desserty/rich dark goodness. -- Their IPA/hoppier offerings get RAVE reviews from friends...and I can even handle the DIPA with Lactose which says a lot because I am NOT an IPA fan. My friend recommended this place, commenting that they have unique beers brewed in small batches that rotate pretty regularly. That sounded appealing to me so when I first visited with friends, we tried the full flight and got pints of "Hop Supremacy". All of the beers were pretty full-bodied and filling, like, you might not be able to drink more than two pints without feeling like calling an Uber. :) That said, I love what they are doing and would possibly recommend also adding a flavorful lower gravity beer. The setting is casual with tall, long tables for open seating with big containers of Utz pretzels. As Deviate does not have a kitchen, they endorse folks bringing in their own food. I have to be honest, I was a little hesitant about this place simply because of its location. This area is surrounded by big box stores and chains so I thought it was strange that a brewery would pick this location. I tried it because my boyfriend's coworkers raved about the place and I sure am happy I did. I stopped in here after a workout at the nearby LA fitness. I went in with low expectations but came out with only smiles. First off, the staff is very friendly. You can tell the bartenders highly respect the passion the owners put in their beer and they are a good face to the brewery. We tried the flight of 8, all their beers on tap. They were very generous pours! I took my time sampling all their beers and took my rest in between sampling as a chance to look around the place. They let you bring in your own food! Not only that, but they have a list of places near by and their flyers available to you if you decide you need some carbs to soak up all the beer you have been drinking. They also have GIANT containers of pretzels to also soak up all the beer you have been drinking, for free. The nicest touch is the water jug in the corner. You can fill up your water to your hearts content without having to wait for a waitress to come by. I appreciate that more than they know. Deviate is a low key spot to enjoy unique beers that rotate through the taps quickly. We stopped in late on a Sunday afternoon to grab a pint. The beers they have on tap at the moment are some big beers! We shared a tasting flight of imperial chocolate stout, imperial stout with dark cherries, CTZ IPA, and a double IPA with grapefruit zest. My fave was the imperial chocolate stout, Doug followed up our flight with a pint of the hoppy IPA. The thing I like most about Deviate is the taproom, they have chosen to go very low maintenance, allowing their patrons to BYOF, bring your own food, or call the delivery guy to bring some Thai Papaya from across the street. Super friendly staff, and a very welcoming crowd of beer drinkers. We ran into one old friend and met 4 new friends, two of them canine, the taproom is dog friendly for well behaved pups. read more

Oh Deviate Brewing- how I love thee. Ok- Fair warning as I have had friends complain a bit about this. Deviate Brewing's Beers are high ABV. That being said, WOW. WOW. WOW. I mean, we had a flight and a pint, and I might have been feeling pretty happy, but their beer is spot on. I first had an experience with Deviate Brewing before the brewery was even opened. I went to an event at the Tasting Society where they were serving a peanut butter beer. It basically tasted like a nutter butter and in a very odd but good way. They didn't have their brick and mortar store open yet, so we put their name in the back of our busy minds and waited. Fast-forward some months later and I am absolutely still in love with this brewery. The ambiance is awesome, board games and card games line the windowsills with menus of places that deliver. Basically, you never need to leave the brewery. The beers are listed on a chalkboard behind the standing area bar with tables both indoors and out. It has a very unique space and character that you don't expect in the 96th area corridor. Now for the important stuff: the brews. Just order them. Deviate does well with what their name implies, they deviate from the norm. You aren't going to find a typical domestic style beer. You are going to find beer with unique flavors and ingredients in them. Ghost Pepper? Peanut Butter? Coffee Cake? Orange Sherbet? Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. This is a very different kind of brewery (hence the name). It falls into the nanobrewery category due to the limited production. In fact, I think the only place you can get their beer is from this location. Even though it is a small production brewery, Deviate always has 8 beers on tap. You can buy them by the pint or sample 4 or all 8 at a time. Of course you can always have your growler filled to take some home. The brewmaster is usually working the taproom so you can really pick his brain to get some insight on every beer there. What makes this place truly unique is the styles of beer they make. You won't find a regular ale or lager here. They like to do wacky flavor combinations/profiles and see what does and doesn't work. On this night, my favorite was the MeSo PepperCorny (green peppercorn) saison. Another good one was the VanConChile (vanilla chipotle) porter. There's no food sold on site, but you can bring in whatever you want or order delivery. There's a McDonald's across the street and a Thai restaurant too. There is plentiful seating inside. You can belly right up to the bar or sit at one of the high top long tables. There's also an area with more comfortable low seating. Very great first impression when I walked into Deviate Brewery today! Have been waiting for them to open their doors for months and was not disappointed. Was offered samples before purchasing. The selfish part of me doesn't even want to leave this review, because I am so afraid of this place getting so well known that we don't get a table (but we have always been able to get one-- they have lots of seating!). But it's just that good. We've tried a lot of breweries in the area, and this is our go-to. This place is unique in that they experiment with super interesting brews, and there is always something new on tap. We love to get flights. Even on the occasional, "huh, I did not really love that," is interesting and memorable. But I love 95% plus of what they make, and I don't regret trying the other 5%. Deviate is my favorite Indy-area brewery by FAR and has been for over 3 years. They're a small batch brewery and are always putting out very creative, high quality draft beers. It's a bring your own food establishment so you can either bring food from home or order delivery, although they do have free popcorn and some snack options available for purchase. It's a small, hole in the wall establishment - perfect for drinking, conversation and board games (they have tons!). Very dog friendly, both indoors and outdoors, including water bowls and free homemade treats. I've recommended Deviate to so many friends over the years and they have never been disappointed! I can easily see why everyone loves this place. The space is casual and comfortable but nice. Everyone here was friendly, especially the staff but also the patrons. The folks working here were very helpful with advice on picking out beers. We were here on a Friday night and it was definitely busy, but the wait to order was very reasonable, and we were able to find a place to sit. Most importantly, the beers were DELICIOUS!! We had two flights, and every beer was excellent. The popcorn (free) made for a fun snack to go with the beer. They also have Broad Ripple Chips for sale. In addition, they allow folks to bring in outside food and have multiple menus on hand. We didn't check it out, but you can order food from the Thai restaurant nearby, with free delivery. The Good- Deviate brewing had a number of fun experimental beers. Velcro pajamas was my favorite but they had a lot to try out. Definitely worth tasting a couple beers. The Pad- Spacious brewery with a lot of large tables and seating. No seating at the bar area itself which I thought was odd. It was rainy when I visited but they have a nice patio area as well! The Ugly- The location, on the intersection of Michigan and 96th St just north of 465, is really busy with traffic. Cancel your weekend plans, or move them to Deviate. As Krysha M. mentioned noted, Deviate is not your average brewery. Owners Mike and Greg always keep me on my toes, creating new and unique brews constantly. I am always excited to see what new creations are highlighted on their menu board... peanut butter beer (damn skippy) is my current obsession. But, they make me feel like a bit of a floozie, I change my mind as to which is my favorite beverage every time I come in. For me, it's between Deviate and Towyard for worst brewery in town. I tried two beers here and they were both way too sweet, like bad birthday cake. No thanks. The staff was nice, but the beer was bad. read more

We stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon and were able to find a table to sit for four. There was menu of all their beers on the table and our husbands went to order us our first round. I do like that you can order a 5oz pour or a flight. And I would say they were pretty heavy on the IPAs when we were there, which made my husband happy. I tried a fruitier one with pineapple in it and it really didn't taste much like beer, which for a mostly non beer drinker like me, worked! I tried my friend's Pimp nuts, which how could you ever forget that name?? It was a peanut butter stout and I decided to do a 5oz of that one next. I think it was my favorite one. I also tried the Raspberry puree, also another great name. Love the local art on the walls too and the free popcorn was another bonus. All the beers were over 5% so that makes for some strong drinking. Not really a place you can enjoy more than two beers and still drive home so plan accordingly. read more

Seriously. This place and these guys are doing some awesome, awesome stuff and creating something different in the craft beer scene here in Indy. These guys have been doing homebrew for 18 years (and passing it out for free at Hoosier Beer Geek's Tailgate for Nothing) and now they have taken the plunge into brewing full-time. And I am so glad that they did. There are about 8 beers on draft that change really quickly because they are only doing very small batches of beers. No food onsite, but there are a handful of places nearby who will deliver. The location is prime, right off of 96th and Michigan, seen from 465. Deviate is definitely one of the places we'll be stopping by frequently. read more
