We are regulars at Black Circle every Wednesday for Strange Trivia (unless it's being held at the sister bar Loom). Black Circle is a brewery and concert venue with a Heavy Metal theme. They have several of their own brews as well as a few guest taps that rotate regularly. There is also a small restaurant next door if you're feeling hungry and need a snack. We always enjoy Black Circle as the bartenders are friendly and efficient, theres quite a bit of room for tables and when the weather is nice there's picnic tables and large deck outside. Bonus: it's also dog friendly! I can't speak for the quality of the concert events since I'm not much of a Heavy Metal fan, but the space itself is nice and the beers are always delicious! They also host a market at the end of the month and annually host a "dead formats" swap. First time coming here for a planned event and the venue did not disappoint! The atmosphere was just right for the planned DJ. Music was phenomenal, drinks were on point and staff were very amigable. The decorations of the venue were awesome! They had vintage VHS movies and even a TV in which to play them! Pinball in the back with a small restaurant for a quick snack, and they sold merch as well. My visit to Black Circle was a little unusual, in that I visited to score a free beer after I helped out with a litter cleanup in the SoBro neighborhood. Which brings me to my first reason why Black Circle is awesome: They support community endeavors by giving away their product to volunteers! I mean, I would have done the litter cleanup anyway, but it made me feel all warm and fuzzy to know that this local business cares about the people who care about its neighborhood. (And I literally felt all warm and fuzzy: Black Circle beer hits just right.) My second reason for liking Black Circle is another important one: Their beer is amazing. I've visited their other location down the street, Loom, to pick up a variety pack of their different offerings. One of my favorite was a gose, which I had never tried before but now I love. When I was at Black Circle, I got a stout on tap, which isn't usually my thing but I ended up really loving it. Since it seems like I'm making lists: My third reason for loving Black Circle is because the owner seems to embrace the 1990s, which I can 100% get behind. I visited on a Saturday afternoon shortly after they opened, when there were only a few people there, and the music was going with a song by Our Lady Peace, which was banger in the 90s and continues to be today. (And I will die on that hill.) Die Hard was playing on the TV -- and it was probably a VHS movie, because there are VHS cassettes displayed all around the bar. Pinball machines -- my favorite arcade game -- line one side of the room. There's a machine where you can purchase cards featuring ALF, Garbage Pail Kids and the A-Team for three quarters. I feel like I conjured Black Circle into existence from a dream. I don't believe there is food to purchase here, but Black Circle is right next door to the Cuban restaurant Elena Ruz, and I think they work closely with each other. I love a good patio and Black Circle fits the bill! They have a huge lawn area with 6 (ish) picnic tables and several high top chairs on the patio. Lots of people land here after riding their bicycles so you can anticipate a big crowd of people just hanging out drinking brews post ride. It is just the perfect spot to do just that! Have to share that Black Circle hosts a comedy show every Sunday night. They start any time between 8-830p. I laughed LOUD and HARD during the show. Seriously funny. Where do they even find so many comedians around? The stage is set up outside so you can bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy FREE entertainment. Also, twinkle lights. Black Circle Brewing is one of those businesses where you can practically see its evolution in its Yelp reviews. Black Circle is a small live performance venue and craft beverage producer that opened in 2016 that has become an essential part of the growth of SoBro, a neighborhood I love, from its spot inside the old Double 8 warehouse that is now known as Refinery 46. For the longest time, I thought that no aspect of this building/complex was wheelchair friendly. Sadly, the entire building is actually not wheelchair friendly but quite a bit of it actually thanks to a nicely done ramp on the outside in the back (the front is NOT wheelchair friendly) and some obvious efforts inside to improve the situation. Black Circle is a place that feels like home. Okay, technically, Black Circle is a place that feels like home with hints of heavy metal, an industrial vibe, and people who actually care even if that care has a bit of an edge to it. In other words, it's my kind of home. Black Circle also has their production facility set up in a unique makerspace concept where you can even do your laundry - Loom - a little bit west on East 46th Street. Over the last 5-6 years, Black Circle has grown. They've gone from aspiring to be open to all ages to largely being open to all ages. They've gone from beer only to also crafting spirits. They've got a nice little outside area and a small but impressive performance area that practically screams out for the heavy metal it often hosts. There's plenty of parking, though it can be a little chaotic during events. I'm not completely sure about accessible parking options, though it's fairly easy to make things work here given the casual layout. The vibe here is nostalgic, warm, and casual. There's vinyl and VHS on the wall and you can find VHS movies playing on the television screens in the building. You have a handful of pinball options here and an overall aura that says this is a place where you can relax and be who you are. Black Circle used to partner with Elena Ruz, however, Elena Ruz left not long ago and has now been replaced by Grump's Slice Shop. Grump's is an offshot of Futuro, for the record, though the pizza is different. I've yet to try it, but plan to do so probably within the next week. Grump's is typically open similar hours to Black Circle, though it's worth noting they are separate businesses and if you're coming here with them in mind it's best to check their website. Black Circle is very community minded and supportive of the expanded Nickel Plate Trail (one of my favorites) into Marion County. Children and dogs are welcome on the patio. They currently offer Crowler cans, though not growlers. They also have 4-packs of house beer down at Loom (which is honestly close enough that you could walk/wheel there). The event calendar is on the website. They have a ton of events with a strong emphasis on heavy metal-type music, though they're also known to host comedy, trivia, electronica, new wave, and other types of music not often found in Indy. They have Sweet Baby Jesus! on draft (absolutely one of my favorites, probably a coincidence that I'm a minister too) and I'm a fan of their own Pixel Punk Mosaic IPA. They also have guest brews right now from Centerpoint, Triton, Louisville's Goodwood, Michigan City's Burn 'em Brewing, and others. Among the local joints, I can likely say that Black Circle is my favorite with a distinct vibe offering ample character, terrific brews, amazing music, and friendly people. While Refinery 46 isn't entirely accessible, Black Circle does well and it's folks like this who make life more accessible naturally because of their genuinely inviting spirits. I'm sad that I can't claim SoBro as my home neighborhood (I live about 5 minutes east), but it has become a "go to" area for me and it's fun watching Refinery 46 grow into something special. Took us a while but we finally came here to check out the beer! It was a Sunday and they were having a market outside which was so cool...lots of good local vendors. Inside there are lots of games with pinball and movies on as well. Dazed and confused was playing while we were there, huge bonus, and they were playing great music. What a blast from the past. This place had me feeling a sorts of nostalgic. I didn't go when they had a show or anything, just to grab a beer and hang. They have an entire wall of vinyl and they are constantly rotating the music selection that comes directly from the record player. There is also a wall full of VHS and this is what is played onto the TV screens around the bar. They prop up the old movie that's on on top of this 8 inch tint VHS player/TV combo. There was also a variety of old toys and just general nostalgia. Finally- I think the pinball here is the closest that exists now to the broad ripple area. I love BC; it's what I think of when someone says, "dive"...and I mean that in the most endearing way! Vintage pinball machines surround the tables, and there's a nice big bar to saddle up to. Elena Ruz is also on site and features some ridiculously good Cuban food, if you get hungry. First timer visiting on a Sunday evening without much fuss. Thank goodness they had a small sign to point from off the main road (46th St) otherwise i definitely would have missed the turn. Ample free parking in their lot. Outdoor seating /space available but it's cold now so i doubt it'll see much use currently. Walking inside i felt like i was taken back to the 80's. Record player playing, pinball machines glowing, and a mature crowd. Order at the bar, grab your number, then find a seat at the bar or the tables. There were several featured brews i wasn't familiar with and are listed on their website if you wanted to research in advance. I had not but luckily the bartender was helpful and provided me a few samples. Had my first gose (like a sour... super sour for me). I happily ended up with an imperial stout (threat level coconut. Oh yeah, it was my jam). I would love to try the cafe sometime but it was closed that day. Menu had both meat and veggie options with a Latin cuisine vibe. I really liked my rice bowl because it was flavorful... sorry the name escapes me, it's only served on Sat and Sun though. However, my friend had the Medianoche Sliders and it shockingly fell bland when compared to the description. Overall i was pleasently surprised with the culinary level of the place. I didn't get to play the pinball machines but there are plenty to go around. Neat place. I dig it (not the sign as much though. What really impressed me about this venue was the attention paid to the sound-the acoustic panels enveloping the stage helped to create a tight sound you rarely find in small clubs. Good sound system, good stage, nice outdoor space for band merch, all belie the punk theme. Speaking of which, the drink rails also help keep the mosh pit and the just-happy-to-hang peeps separated. Nice beer menu, fair prices and quick service all a plus. Only slight downside is the place gets so packed most of the crowd has to park in the grass around the place. Went for their outdoor film event and it was good! One can bring their picnic blanket or outdoor chairs to the event to watch a horror film from back in the day. One has to order drinks from inside the building and close tabs to go outside. The outdoor space is large enough for picnics and they do have tables and benches for outdoor drinking. The only down side was that there were a large number not wearing their masks and at one point some lady was promoting their business without wearing a mask with us. We freaked out a bit. Other than that the staff were super nice and accommodating. They were wearing their masks at all times. Due to the weather, we did not finish the film for it started raining. I'm thrilled to see my neighborhood, South Broad Ripple, evolve into THE place to be. It didn't take long for the word to get out about this hot local spot, somewhat hidden back in the former Double 8 building just over the tracks from CVS on 46th Street. Proactive since their opening, the attractive new signage shows their commitment to the community. Parking is plentiful and seemingly safe and well lit. They've partnered with www.elenaruzindy.com to offer some of the best authentic Cuban food in Indy. With ample portions, you can't go wrong ordering their empanadas. Their Cubano sandwich is worth the trip alone. Paired with mariquitas (ribboned plantain chips with garlic aioli), mmmm, you'd better get your own! Pop in on a lazy Sunday for brunch, a champagne cocktail or featuring heavenly java from Circadian coffee, another partner business. In its short lifespan, The Black Circle has become known as the new metal show venue. The clientele varies and isn't limited to any particular demographic, though you'll certainly see all ages and walks of life. Their expansion of a 'kid friendly indoor zone' next door, adding to the all ages patio, also open to your fur babies. I can't find a reason not to love this place (except maybe the screaming babies at the kids space opening, kind of nuts, but its not always all about me). Suggestions: they could use a few more picnic tables towards the back of the patio and designate it as non smoking. Other added touches would be a volleyball net, horseshoes, corn hole in the grassy area, some board games to keep kids (or kids at heart) entertained. I've only eaten here once. I have drank quite a few beers here but now I don't drink. I still come to this bar all the time though because they are doing God's work, hosting shows for Indy's heavy metal music community. And for that reason alone I would like to express my eternal gratitude. Without y'all Indy would suck, and suck hard. Black Circle is my very favorite venue in Indianapolis, both as a performer and as a fan, and this is for many reasons. The atmosphere is appealing and welcoming to anyone and everyone. People who like heavy metal in particular can really find a home here, but so can anyone else. There is lots to enjoy, from awesome live bands to awesome vinyl records spinning to pinball machines lining the walls. The staff are all friendly and helpful, and they actually make an effort to get to know the regulars. The food they serve from Elena Ruz next door is all excellent. Try some of the sandwiches and empanadas next time you are in - there is almost always a special empanada going and they are always good. As a member of a local Indianapolis heavy metal band, playing shows here is always a delight. The sound is always run well, they are easy to work with, and we usually have a decent turnout here. This translates to the attendees having a good time, because there are always great bands coming who are excited to play on that stage. read more

Not too bad... Not easy to find to door. Space is a little small, especially on the night we were there, as it was a packed house. They did pull out a couple extra tables to accommodate. Beer wasn't too bad. Had a cream stout (I can't find the name, I think they had changed them to go with a theme) which was good. and also a Chocolate porter (I often try this type) which was yummy! Beers were about $6 each. We also went for the Cuban food! (See Elena Ruz Cuban Cuisine) The food was great. Empanadas sampler, plantain chips, and meals for the kids! But prices for the food was quite high! Service was kind and frequent. We also enjoyed the music trivial being played as well! If you're in the mood for a laid back brewery with live music and great tasting beers then look no further. Black circle is a great addition to this neighborhood. The staff was friendly and willing to make recommendations to meet your beer or cider needs. I had the south cider and it was delicious! The cider was light, refreshing and not to acidic. I visited on a Friday evening and there was a $5 cover to listen to the band/ sit inside. I was able to go to the bar to get a drink and sit outside to avoid paying the cover. I felt it was time for an update, as Black Circle is one of my favorite breweries, and just overall places to hangout, in Indianapolis. First off the beer is great. Now that this is out of the way, let's talk about everything else great about this place. They put a lot of effort into putting on great events that help cultivate their own special culture. They are always fun, inclusive, and most of all unique. There is really no other brewery like this in Indy. I've been to many a drag show, rock concert, pinball contest, and handicraft show here. Combine that with great beer, and I know I'm going to enjoy myself. Ive been here twice, and each times were pleasant experiences. When traveling here, it's a nondescript building from the road, but follow google maps and turn down the small side street that takes you behind the building. Decent-sized parking lot. The bar is super rock and roll/metal themed. There are pinball machines and video game machines. There are a variety of brews, including ones they make that are on tap (I like the light ales) and they offer other bottled beers and drinks. Staff are friendly and it's a good vibe. There's a stage for live shows. Bathrooms are clean yet also super fun. There is food via the attached Cuban restaurant - you order at the bar, pay for it via a separate check since it is a separate business. The bf and I stumbled into this place off the recommendation of a friend of a friend. It definitely has a cool sense of feeling lesser known, and the space represents a fantastic merger of several delightfully mismatched themes. Brewing! They make beer. Good beer. Not over-the-top hoppy beer. Also have some great selections from other local brewers. Pinball! There's lot of pinball to be had if you're into that. Cuban food! I know that comes out of left field but just roll with me here. Not the star of the show, but a nice, inexpensive change from standard bar fair. Metal bands! Apparently this is a great place to do a metal concert. The bartender told me something about another venue closing and them taking in some of the shows. Not my scene, but cool! Drag! I know right? How come none none of the other gays I know talk about this place? Drag bingo, lip synching. I can't wait to come back for that. Burlesque! I've never been to a burlesque show, but it sounds fun. This has become one of my favorite places to stop and have a quick bite to eat and a good beer. We only live like 10 minutes away, and we always stop on our way down to a concert or sporting event Downtown. It's also a perfect place to just hangout on the weekend and enjoy some pinball, records, VHS movies, and of course the Beer! Recently we were told to try the empanadas and I am very glad that we did. That will probably be our regular order from now on. They have about 10 different fillings to choose from. The 4 regular fillings are $7.50 for 3 empanadas and a dipping sauce. They have more specialty fillings, along with a weekly special or two, that runs for $8.50. Well worth the price. We have gotten 3 orders between two people and been pleasantly full. I really like the Chorizo and Goat Cheese! They have a bunch of other food that we need to try, but we have trouble moving off of the empanadas. The Beer is probably what drops this down to a 4 star review for me. There are times that we have gone and I really like the Beers that are theirs that are on tap. This past visit I really like the Chemical Meditation Stout and the Mosaic IPA. Other times I have only had okay beers. Nothing has been bad, just nothing that I would continue to drink over and over. I would drink both of the ones i just mentioned repeatedly. They also do a really good job with their guest taps of having a varied and funky selection. They of course have bottled and canned selections as well. The atmosphere is eclectic and inviting at the same time, and I have never seen anyone not in a good mood there. There are a bunch of pinball machines and a few other arcade games sprinkled in. I stopped in and enjoyed the three house brews I sampled in my flight. Being a micro brewery, less than half of their taps were house options. Since I am not an IPA fan, I went with three house and one guest tap, the Breakfast Magpie by New Day Meadery. The Dry Hopped Blonde called "Han Shot 1st" was hoppier than most blonde ales (5.2%). The Scotch Ale was dark and rich (6.3%). The Gose (4%) was tart and would pair well with some of the food options they offer. They do have Cuban food available, but since we ate before arriving, we didn't sample it. There is plenty of free parking in the lot on the south end of the building (2200 block of east 46th street). Great atmosphere! Just what this area needed. The brewer/owner greeted us upon entering and offered all of the samples. Everyone working was super engaging and the beer wasn't too bad either We tried a sour, rye IPA, coffee stout, and Christmas beer. All of them were tasty and unique. I will admit I like a lighter beer- but all of the beers were tasty without too much heaviness. The Cuban kitchen attached was AMAZING! We had the black beans, Cubana, and empanadas- everything was delicious and super reasonably priced. Come here. You won't regret your time and money spent here. FINALLY. A local craft brewery that isn't worried about overpowering, overwhelming hoppy flavors. Don't get me wrong, every now and then, an intense, aromatic beer is good, but it's all over the place, and it's nice to see Black Circle taking a step back on the flavor punching and offering a nice variety of easy-to-drink, smooth brews. I went with the 4-beer flight, as did my roommate, so we were able to try all five of their beers on tap. I loved them all, minus the sour, as I don't love sours. The coconut, the coffee, and their most popular (everyone at the bar had it) are all that strike me as great beers. The flavors are subtle, just enough to give you the flavor profile you're looking for, but nothing overwhelming. Even the IPA was perfectly hopped. The bartenders were all very helpful and friendly. The prices are your normal craft beer prices, there is ample parking, arcade games, a stage for bands, and outdoor seating. What more could you ask for? Great addition to the Keystone area - a location that was much needed for a brewery scene. The only negative: I wish that their tap list was a bit more organized, so their brews on draft were separate than guest taps so you could read it a bit easier. I had to search intensely to find what I was drinking every time since they were all mixed together. My only question - who came up with the logo first? Arrival or Black Circle? haha read more

Kudos to Black Circle, who nicely upgraded a worn-down space with gray/black decor, pinball galore, and enjoyable beer. Although I've yet to try a beer that rivals my favorite Indy breweries, Black Circle's beer is still superior to many local places and they know how to craft a great guest tap list. When I visited on a Saturday afternoon, I tried Black Circle's blackberry gose (a little too sweet) and a cold brew coffee porter (good take on a typical flavor). For food options, Elena Ruz Cuban cuisine is on-site, offering a shorter menu consisting of Cuban sandwiches, plantain chips, black beans, empanadas, and more. Black Circle is located off of Keystone and 46th St., with a large parking lot and entrance on the south side of the building. Although it was cooler when I visited, there is an outdoor patio available for when warmer weather arrives. The bartenders were nice, helpfully explained the beer styles on tap, and were quick to offer a recommendation. If you follow Black Circle on Facebook, you'll frequently see live music booked, mainly of the metal and punk variety. I love having a new, casual brewery location close to my neighborhood and hope Black Circle is successful. Even if their logo reminds me of The Ring...shiver. read more

This place has a lot of good things going for it. I'll make a list for aesthetic purposes. A. Black Circle is a locally owned business run by two beer loving dudes who used to brew in their garage. B. Low key, non-judgmental, non-corporate atmosphere. C. Bartenders are actually patient and don't hate you. D. LIVE LOCAL MUSIC E. A menu that acknowledges that vegetarians/vegans exist and that they will probably be eating here. F. Food that is delicious and comes out fast. I really like it here. 10/10 will return. read more
