There is a 10 year-old, dusty bottle of vermouth somewhere on the shelf however, if you must know... look, this isn't a cocktail bar. J Clyde's is an Historic neighborhood attraction--if by "attraction" you really mean, "most lovable dumpster on the planet." Its a dive bar. And I don't mean that in the new, hipster, outward-appearance sense of the word. I mean it in the everything-leaks, nothing-is-under-30-years-old, homeless-folks-pick-through-the-ashtray-out-front, and there-are-zero-plans-to-change-a-damn-thing-about-it sense of the word. Don't come here ironically. You won't have a good time. Do come here for cheap booze ($2 draft High Life and $3.50 well drinks) and a tight sense of neighborhood and community. Do come here for friendly service, inclusive atmosphere, and judgment-free safe space provided by the regular patrons and J Clyde's wonderfully curated staff of bad ass bartenders. Cash only (ATM nearby)! Out of all the bars on the east side, this one is tied for first place for me. They have a local beer (and 2 others) on draft, a nice selection of quality bottled beers (Matilda, Sierra Nevada, Demolition) and liquors (Willett bourbon), and high quality mixers. It's long and narrow and can get smoky, but the ventilation is pretty good. We've had only friendly bartenders. There's a row of stools at the bar, and a booth along the wall. The opposite side of the booth has chairs. Cool pin-up posters adorn the walls, along with some sports memorabilia. This bar is seriously one long room with a big window at the front. There are TWO Megatouch games (aka "alone" games) at the bar. I'm rusty at Photohunt...I need to come here more! read more

There really isn't much to say that other reviewers already haven't. J Clyde's is one of the east side's numerous quality bars. It is small, and the "serve food" requirements they legally have to serve probably barely pass muster. During holidays or other days, they may have a pot-luck food thing going on that bartenders and customers contribute to. There's a few beers on tap, a bunch of bottles, and the drinks are stiff. Cinder block behind bar, all grey walls. Decorated with older photos of Marilyn, Elvis, the duke, james Dean, etc. horrible cooler with bright white lights about 3/4 down the bar. Maybe 15 stools at bar. 4-5 lower rating tables opposite the bar. Bar is abnormally tall. Black white checkered floor. Couple 42" tvs. Many people playing cards, which is just great, old school. Great little dive/ neighborhood bar. The drinks are stiff, and for such a small bar, there are great craft brews to choose from. The list is always changing, too. The drink special never changes- $2 high life on tap, $3.50 well drinks. Currently, Sun King Sunlight Cream Ale on draft. If you're looking for food, eat before coming here unless you love frozen pizza or chips. The bar is really small and can get really smoky, but an industrialized smoke eater was just installed and helps unless totally packed. Even though J Clydes doesn't have it's old Jukebox anymore, the tunes played on this one still rule. The bartenders who work here rule, too! read more

This is a great little bar at the end of my block. It has High Life on tap for those who want to be cheap or ironic but also has Guiness and Boddingtons in the fridge for the beer snobs. Inexpensive and rarely crowded, this is probably my favorite East Side bar. read more

J. Clyde's is very good for exactly what it's supposed to be. A real dive bar. It's cozy inside, smaller than I was expecting. The bartender was friendly but not over-the-top-Chili's-friendly, which is a good thing. She made us great Moscow Mules, which isn't necessarily the sort of drink you'd normally order in a place like this. But seriously, very tasty and very strong. For like $4.50. If I lived around here, this would probably be a normal hangout spot for me. read more

This dive bar has a good jukebox, strong drinks, and (depending when you go in) friendly bartenders. Even the grumpy bartenders will grow on you if you go in a few times and aren't an ass. They have Scarlet Lane Dorian Stout on tap. Who would expect that? They also have High Life on tap.This is a small bar that seems like it's from a different time period. They have frozen pizza and a few other bar foods , but they also don't mind if you order delivery food...in fact, they even will give you menus to look at! It's cash only, so plan ahead. I wish they would buy the place next door and make the bar bigger. I am quite sure it would be a hit. I was in here last night for the first time in YEARS. Had a blast with old friends I had not seen in a long time and good conversations with people I just met. I spent my teenage years in this neighborhood and used to live just about a mile away. I was full of nostalgia being back in my old stomping grounds. Very small shotgun-style place, but I was perfectly comfortable. Plenty of stools at the bar, but there are also tables at the long booth seats on the opposite wall. Lots of cool movie posters, etc. on the walls and ceiling. Black and white checkered tile floor. Long bar with a mirror behind it. Nifty things adorning the mirror including a picture of Lil Bub, the cat. Neon and white Christmas lights. The bar even has hooks underneath strong enough to hold my purse which is as heavy as a ton of bricks. The music coming from the jukebox seemed a bit loud, but I did notice the bartender turned it down a bit to a more comfortable level. Good selection of music and most people in there had pretty good taste, judging by the songs they played. The touchscreen on the juke was a little screwy, but worked for the most part and I enjoyed selecting a few tunes. Thanks to Marion County's ordinance, there is no smoking inside, but the good people at J. Clyde's have placed a bucket with sand in it outside the door for butts. It wasn't too much of a pain to just step outside to smoke and come back in. My beer was right where I left it. Towards the end of the night, they had the front door open so you could hear the music out there if you wanted to have another cigarette. A few things on draft including Miller High Life, an IPA, a stout, and an ale which was my choice. I can't remember the name of it right now, but it was pretty good. Two Hearts, maybe?? The bartender was cool and gave me a sample of it before committing to a whole pint. The ale was over 5 bucks, but still a pretty decent price compared to other bars. I believe the High Life on draft was just 2 dollars because that is what my companion was drinking. I noticed they had a huge selection of bottled beers and a couple specials written up on the board. Pretty large selection of liquor, too, though I didn't partake in any of that. Not sure what time they stop serving food, but I saw a sign for pizza, hot pretzels and a couple other items. They also have bags of Munchie mix, some other chips, and microwave popcorn. I saw The Beast food truck outside at one point, but think they were done for the night. On another sign in the bar, I noticed they have J. Clyde's t-shirts for $12, which I thought was pretty neat. Small, but cozy and friendly place. A little on the loud side, but nothing crazy. Clean bar and restroom. One thing to remember before going is that it is cash only. And if you happen to be in a wheelchair, you might have a hard time navigating through this bar, or at least getting in and out of the restroom. Just thought I'd include that info in case! As far as neighborhood dive bars are concerned.... This one is hard to beat. Cash only is the first thing you need to be aware of. Chase Bank is across the street with a cash machine handy. The bathroom is comedy in more ways then one. First off I have never seen a sink so small except maybe in an airplane... but that is a toss up, this one may be smaller. poetry covers the walls and begs you to add your own creative flare. Nice this is, its always clean. The bar its self is old school and looks like the walls might be cracking open in places... I like this about J.Clydes. I also like the diversity of the crowed that comes in here. I met my first ever "former, train hoping hobo" That was actually something on my bucket list, happy I got to check off. The drinks are affordable and made well, No food on site, but you can order delivery from some local pizza places. "Just Pizza" is my fav.. T.Vs' are on for sporting events and other entertainment. Excellent dive bar, small, smokey, and a loud juke box. One of my favorite Marylin Monroe pictures up on the wall always a good sign. The bathroom really is a closet. Bring your sharpie, graffiti is encouraged in the water closet. Bartenders are always friendly and chatty when you want them to be or not when you need brooding time. Good place to go if you are of age and going to an all ages show at the Emerson. Don't forget to grab a Dixie Cup of salty peanuts for dinner while bellied up to the bar. read more

Previous reviews made it sound like the place was pretty popular, but I was one of maybe 5 people and some drama murder show like dateline was on TV.. As with Andy this is the booze serving nook at the end of my block. The bartenders are friendly and typically quick. During the week it's often housed by the local bar flies. Weekends are a bit random with the Emerson Theare around the corner. So one night might be Metal heads or punks then hip hopers the next. That also makes it fun and hard to get a drink or seat as the place is tiny. Don't order some wild drinks and expect the best... your best bet is a beer or (insert booze) and cola.
