Inconsistency among doormen is a highlight, 21 minutes wait for people in line. One patron comes from inside, hugs the bouncer and her friends immediately cut the line. Talked to the doormen, and they claim to be waiting on a manager's go-ahead despite just letting in a two individuals not in line. Really disappointing service from the doormen, but the bar service was perfectly fine. Drinks on time and well made, just the door service lacking. read more

Had a chance to visit the Burnside Inn with a friend recently. I'll give an okay review, because it wasn't MY cup of tea. It's a 3-story house turned bar/lounge/hang-out spot. It seems to be a place where lots of college aged students and those under 30 go. There are room to congregate besides the bars on the 1st and 2nd floors, but everything's narrow and felt crowded very quickly. There was a live band playing music unrecognizable to me. If you grunge rock, you might find yourself quite comfy here. I'd like to come back for their karaoke night on Thursdays, other than that, it's just not my cup of tea. Okay, I've been sleeping on this place! We were on a pub crawl and stopped here without any prior knowledge. The bartender told us they are known for the mules and they should INDEED BE KNOWN FOR THEIR MULES. No notes. We tried the blueberry, the lavender, and the regular mule and they were all awesome. We also were digging the colonial vibes--it was as though we just got off our Pony Express route and were posting up for a round of beverages. Burnside Inn is my go to place downtown! There are three levels. The first floor has a bar and usually someone id playing the piano. The second floor has a small bar with a stage, where there is usually live music. The third floor has a private room and pool tables. The bartenders always provide great service and make sure you're taken care of! This time we ordered the BIG Moscow mule. You have to have at least 6 people to split it with you. This is a great place to go to hang out with friends, or just to enjoy good drinks and live music. They have a very good drink menu consisting of multiple flavors of mules (their specialty) like lavender and blueberry, but also interesting variations of known drinks, such as a cucumber gin and tonic. The prices are reasonable for what you would expect to pay along mass ave. Right now they are limiting their capacity due to covid, but even if there is a line it does not take very long to get inside. You can pretty much always find a seat to listen to the live music or talk with your friends, or you can hang out on one of their many patios. They have multiple bars and a pool table. Very bummed after a poor service experience. We love coming here and we're coming for my 30th birthday after lunch. We waited for opening at 2:00, they opened the doors at 2:10 which was fine but when my dad entered and let us know the doors were open, the bartender told him to "turn the energy down, I just woke up." Best Old Fashioned you can find in Indy!!! The smoked old Fashioned is only $12 and you not only get the best cocktail in Indy but such a great atmosphere. DJ or live band on floor 2 and then speaker music on floor 3. Floor 3 features a pool table in a secluded little section which is great for your group of friends. I'm only giving it 4 Stars now because it was my first visit. Hoping to get back there and taste the food. I loved the atmosphere and am intrigued by this 3-story facility. We didn't get to go upstairs because it was too early. From 5-7 you can only get cocktails which was fine with us so we tried a few of their mule varieties. I got the fruity one which was called muddy something or other. The name completely threw me off. The bartender Justin was nice and guided through the menu, gave suggestions and answered any questions we had. It's a good place to go after work and chill with a friend. I am such a huge fan of Burnside Inn! Hands down one of the most unique bars I've ever been to. It has kind of a speakeasy feel when you first walk in, especially since the entrance is easy to miss as you walk down the street. Burnside has two upper floors that give you the impression of being in someone's apartment, which makes sense given that someone used to live there. The second floor bar is actually a kitchen. There's a fire escape area that's open to patrons too. Something about this arrangement makes the place even more appealing to me. The third floor has a pool table and a sort of parlor room, which is nice for a group of friends to take over and escape a little from the rest of the noise. Note: the extra floors aren't open Monday or Tuesday. There's always action at Burnside. A pianist comes in to provide live music, Wednesday night is karaoke night (complete with a stage!), comedy shows, and more. But what really keeps me coming in here is the Pineapple Express. I can't leave the place without ordering at least 2. And on Thursdays, they're $6! If pineapple isn't your jam, they offer a host of other mules that are also quite good. Also offered is a giant 192oz mule meant for sharing between 6 people. Haven't tried this yet but I'm waiting for the day. PS - Yes, "Burnside" is related to "sideburns". A fun bar on Mass Ave! I got the burnside bourbon - on special on fridays for $5! It was a great deal for a good bourbon. The rest of the group tried one of the mules. Hubs got the dead boots! It was great. There are three floors to explore- usually live music on 2 of them. We had someone singing and playing the piano by where we sat on the first floor. The most RUDE bartenders we have ever encountered anywhere. Saturday night Burnside is open until 3am. We just arrived in Indy late that night had an enough time for a few cocktails and already planned on getting some food and heading to Burnside for drinks. The bouncer was dealing with some rift raft and told us we could go in. We were looking forward to having some drinks and going back to this bar the next night. We were met by rude dismissive bartenders. We were intentionally ignored by a tall intoxicated male bartender. He immediately said we were late and he was in no hurry to serve us as he served others around us and did shots with customers. We said nothing and continued to wait as he went and stood at register and didn't come back. He was clearly serving himself that Saturday night. The other bartender also very very rude! We waited patiently standing at the bar while others were served by the other bartender. This bartender was brunette mid thirties wearing bun on top of her head. She made zero eye contact with us so we thought she did not see us. Without making eye contact she yelled "I see you! Give me some time!" was how she reacted without either of us saying a word just me holding out card on bar. We were in shock. We have been there a few times and we were completely dumbfounded by the service. We should have walked out and probably would have if we didn't walk across town to go to this place. I'm unsure why we were treated so poorly. We were there to spend money and planned on returning the next night. So disappointed. I'm still wondering what we did to to be treated so poorly. read more

This place is three levels with a neat vibe on each floor. The first floor it made to look like an 1880's hotel lobby, the second floor has a small stage and another bar. On a bar hop, Burnside Inn was the next stop. It's quite narrow going in, but the atmosphere is cool. ID is checked the moment you walk in and then the bartender can serve you. I was kind of surprised that they don't have *any* food here. You have to order from an app on your phone. It was weird and I was really needing food at this time but whatever. The cool thing about Burnside Inn is that the second floor is a karaoke station and the third floor is a pool table lounge. The place was pretty dead on a Wednesday night but my friend and I had fun playing pool. The bartender and other employees were pretty friendly. Went for my birthday this past weekend with my friends. The ambiance was incredible. Such a cool and well decorated place. I love how each story gives a different feel to the place. The drinks were well priced and the bartenders were on the money. It's was a Saturday night at like 10pm and very crowded. Not very fun when it's packed because you feel like you can't move because the place is so narrow. I'm also a little claustrophobic so that also contributed to it. What a fun new gem on mass ave! It almost transports you. For sure does not have the stereotypical "I'm on Mass Ave" feel - and i mean that in the best way possible. Upon arriving around 6:30 only the downstairs main floor was open. Full of classic paintings with a twist, bottles and draft beer, a plethora of mules (including one that is 192oz!) and live music. A pleasant piano man was up while we were there. General Burnside is the inspiration for this establishment - and his face, the one which made side burns famous, is evident throughout. There are two additional floors (which hit a capacity throughout the evening). An additional bar on the 2nd floor (which a refrigerate of tall boys for $3.50! And ice cream Sandwiches) a stage for live music and a 3rd floor with two additional private type rooms - one with a pool table. Initially, you're downstairs of a multi level bar; although not always open Burnside has a patio and an upstairs bar. Mules are clearly Burnside's specialty, you can even get a Massive Mule for 6 ("10lbs of liquid joy" they say). On the menu, and around the bar, you'll notice lots of music references in the naming... Beatles fan? Try the Blueberry Hill and Strawberry Fields.... Bad to the Bone? Yes! I could go on and on... This new(er) spot on Mass Ave has been many things before (e.g. a place to get shaped up (see the bar pole in the window), but now it's a place to get a good mule, see some quirky things, maybe catch some live local music, and check out a new spot. Can't say enough how much I like this addition to Mass Ave. While the Avenue is bustling with bars, Burnside made a niche for themselves in that they specialize in Mule cocktails and tasty ones at that. Don't worry if you don't care much for the traditional Moscow Mule because they have at least a dozen variations using all different types of liquor. The price is reasonable and average for Mass Ave. The ambiance is a shotgun room and exposed brick with a nod to the entertainment industry as seen by the pictures and decor boasting entertainment icons most people will recognize. There are multiple floors, and they have theme events scheduled such as Tiki Bar for New Year's. The narrow space holds a small number of bar seats as well as high top tables along the wall, and it can fill up quickly. I am definitely looking forward to my next visit. read more

The Indy Star dubbed this place 'eclectic' and 'sexy'. WTF, Indy?!?!? This place is far, far from either of those things. Oh, wow, a moscow mule. So eclectic! Sexy is not a Colonel wearing aviator sunglasses. A picture of James Dean posing with a cow is only midly sexy (yes, hanging on the wall on the second floor). I am happy there's another live music place on Mass Ave besides the Chatterbox. But yeeesssh.... people, please actually listen to the music. I felt awful for the two gentleman playing Saturday night. They were great and no one was listening! Even if they were listening... the acoustics don't seem to be the best. Each floor isn't very wide and it's quite cramped. I'm also not sure what the purpose of part of the third floor is that has one couch and a TV in it. Basically it's a wasted space. The service wasn't stellar. My friends joined our table (which we didn't have chairs for and were standing around because others took all the chairs) and the server came up to take our empty glasses but didn't bother to ask if they/we needed anything when they clearly just arrived. Also, same friends got up to use the restroom and a server took their not-yet-empty drinks!!! Took them right from under my noise while I was watching the performers. Couldn't they have at least asked??? Overall, this place annoyed me - the patrons, the claustrophobic space. read more

I really enjoy going to Burnsides. It is a small, intimate place that is very fun to be at early in evening. The bartenders are very kind and friendly. Each floor has a different aesthetic. They have great specials throughout the week. On the weekends it can get very crowded, so if you aren't a fan of that.. don't go on the weekends. Great place, I would recommend. read more
