1L beer
Samantha L.

I was blown away eating here. It was my second time visiting, but I haven't been in years, and the food is 10x better than I remember it being. My party of 4, including a toddler, walked in on a Saturday evening around 5:30 pm without a reservation and were seated immediately. We did have to walk up a flight of stairs, and I am unsure if there is an elevator. As soon as we sat down, they started handing out cups of free beer! We also ordered our own and they have a huge selection of German beers on tap, plus cocktails and other bottles of beer. We started the meal with the pretzel appetizer, and wow! It was soft and freshly baked, and it paired perfectly with the mustards. The honey Dijon mustard was my favorite of the three. We then got our entrees, which blew me away. All of the plates of food were massive and so incredibly delicious. It is definitely worth the price. I loved that I could substitute my sauerkraut and potato salad for two other sides, and I am so glad I did. I instead got the Spätzle (pasta) and Rotkohl (red cabbage) with my bratwurst, and I have never been more happy eating German food. Everything was seasoned great, tasty, and importantly, not overly salty. Our waiter was incredibly kind and helpful with the menu. The place is spacious and has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I am glad I visited again because I was reminded how delicious this place is. I will definitely be back! If you're in Downtown Atlanta, whether for a game, an event, or to do the tourist attractions, this is the place to go eat.

King Ludwig platter

Fun time despite no AC! A few appetizers (pretzel, meat and cheese tray and a couple of others) delish beers and the King Ludwig platter fed our large party. What fun! The food was very authentic to what we had in Germany. Everything was really tasty and traditional. It was upper fun to try a little bit of everything and eat family style. Service was great.

Absolutely amazing place to go grab dinner with friends or a group. Outdoor or indoor alike, genuine German flare all round. I love authentic beer gardens like these having hit up many when living in Italy years back. The original owner Wolfgang comes out to greet people and say hello, I love that! The food in spectacular! Try the Schweinshaxe (crispy pork knuckle) as it is delicious! It feeds 2 easy. The sauerkraut it's served over is on point! The brined red cabbage is equally genuine and tasty! Get a side of that if you want real deal German fare on your lips. No beer on my visit but the options were vast. No loss yet as they had a native German white wine on the wine list I enjoy Gewurztraminer! And it is good! I can't imagine how fun it would be to come back here again with a group during a big soccer game, I'm sure it's a blast! So jealous that Atlanta has this, nothing like it back near home for me in West Texas.

Chicken Schnitzel (half portion) with Reuben Rolls

I'll admit that my expectations were low when I came here because the Mr. said he'd hang out here to watch soccer games. I thought the food would be subpar. But I enjoyed my first visit! The staff was friendly and we were able to snag spots at the bar even though it was game day for the Atlanta United team. The Reuben Rolls were yummy. And when we said we'd be splitting the Chicken Schnitzel, they brought it out separated for us which I thought was a nice touch (I still stole a few of Mr.'s fries per usual, though). The entree was great and I'd order it again. I'm not a huge beer drinker but I liked what I ordered--even though I didn't pay attention to the sizes! It was all good!

Very authentic german restaurant, food was amazing, seating inside is very german, long tables, sometimes shared. Outdoor dining patio is amazing too. I didn't take more photos because I was starving . Service was phenomenal. I highly recommend if you like german food. The rinderrouladen was amazing!

Positive - food came out in less than 10 minutes, workers were attentive, and food tasted great. Down side - I was dining by myself and they directed me to the bar when I would've preferred a table.

Handle business first then drink and laugh

This was a wonderful time. We were not doing well in Atlanta and definitely needed a pick up. As I suspected the food was authentic and pleasingly welcome. Of course I over ate. It's a Biergarten. Right? The atmosphere is very reminiscent of a German Biergarten. It's dark with strategic lighting for that intimate experience. Many of our people are overweight and unattractive, so best to dim the lights. lol. The service was excellent. I even taught the server how to cuss in German. I can't discuss the topping-off-of-the-steins; you can trust me when I say they'll take good care of you. Pro Tip: if you have 5 or 6 folks in your party, consider the König Ludwig Platte. For $135 you'll get bratwurst, jägerschnitzel, wiener schnitzel, knackwurst, sauerbraten and a whole roasted chicken. It also includes sauerkraut, potato salad, red cabbage and spätzle (a German pasta). It's the best way to sample all the different flavours and there is something for everyone. Lecker! They have over a dozen drafts. I recommend the Gaffel, Kölsch or the Rothhaus Tanen Zapple, relax, it's a mild Pilsner that you're goona love. 11/24

#42 of 52 (weeks of trying a new restaurant at least once a week) In ATL for business and this was just a few blocks from my hotel. I lived in Germany for 16 years so always eager to get a taste of home. It's set up like a biergarten which I liked. We were seated right away. I ordered a dark beer (can't recall which one) which was really good. For dinner I got the bratwurst plate. You can choose if you want the same two wurst's or one of each. I got one of each and it came with saurkraut and kartoffelsalat (potato salad). I also ordered a side of spatzle as I couldn't pass that up. The food came out pretty quickly. I really enjoyed everything but of course not fully authentic to what I ate when living there. I did enjoy that there was a selection of 3 mustards on the table and they were all pretty flavorful. Not bad if craving a taste of Germany.

Der Biergarten sticks with the classic "German biergarten in America" formula - German beers and food. No crazy fusion stuff, becoming a modern tap room, etc. Beers here are ~$11 for .5L & ~$16 for 1L. You see the usual suspects, like Weistephaner, Hofbrau, and Paulaner. Food options include large pretzel, misc wurst, kartofel (potato salad, but German and better), schnitzel, spatzel, etc.

Karla C.

Located smack in downtown, the e restaurant is attractive and large. There is no parking and parking nearby runs at $20. We were a large group so we practically got all the dishes in the menu. The large platter meant for 4 to 6 people can actually feed a lot more and it was good. Not a huge fan of the sides but I think it is more due to having an acquired taste than them tasting bad.

Inside decor
Edward K.

We came here before a show at State Farm Arena. We are a fan of German food and this did not disappoint. The location is up a legit flight of outdoor stairs. This is not terribly handicapped friendly. The decor inside was fantastic and festive, centered around a large bar. The selection of beers was pretty extensive and authentic. We ordered a nice dark beer. We ordered goulash, weinerschnitzel, and Jaegerschnitzel. Most entrees come with potato salad. They also offer spaetzle with Gruyère which was like a German Mac and cheese. The food was very tasty and the portions were quite generous. The service is okay, considering the customer service dessert that is downtown Atlanta. I would definitely return if coming to the area for an event.

"Soft" pretzel
Juli K.

I really wanted to love this place because I love German food and don't get it often. We started with the Giant soft pretzel with the cheese spread and potato pancakes. The pretzel was good, but it wasn't soft. It was crunchy on the outside, like it had been quickly warmed in the oven. I loved the cheese spread. The potato pancakes were very flat, which is kind of a weird thing to say, but that made them very crispy all the way through, instead of having that creamy middle that I was craving. They were served with a warm bowl of very creamy, very smooth, hot, spiced applesauce. For my entrée I had the jaeger schnitzel that came with cheesy spaetzli. The gravy and mushrooms were excellent but sparse. The schnitzel itself- pork- was heavily breaded and a bit overcooked. I could taste the burnt-ness of it. I couldn't taste the meat over the breading. The spaetzle was tasty but cold and stuck together. The restaurant itself is charming and cute. Our server was excellent. I just wanted the food to be better.

Liter of beer
Emily H.

We stopped by for a drink and each ordered a whole liter of beer! They have a variety of German beers available. The service was rather slow at the bar, as we waited to order our drinks and pay. There were two benches outside the restaurant that you'll pass by when walking in. This was where you could hang out and drink, if you're not planning to eat. It felt a bit awkward, like an area where people pass by rather than a place to hang out.

We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation, but were told our table was already ready, so we were seated. (The restaurant tables are very close together, so be aware that if anyone in your party is wheelchair bound, it may be difficult for them to maneuver around.) The restaurant is kept very warm inside, and I'm usually someone who feels cold easily, but even I was rather hot. A woman brought water glasses and a water carafe to our table and said, "If you want something besides water, just let me know," and then walked off. So, in my mind, that woman was a food assistant or a food runner. Turned out, she was our waitress! She later stopped by, didn't introduce herself and didn't ask if we'd ever been there before, but did ask if we wanted an appetizer. We ordered Potato Pancakes. She also asked if we wanted bread service, so we said yes. We did notice from other conversations at the very close tables near ours, that many of the customers are regulars and have their favorite waitstaff. The manager had stopped by a table to regrettably inform a couple that their favorite waiter was out for 2 weeks. So, that did give us hope that if they have regulars, it must be good. The Potato Pancakes were delicious! (I didn't even stop to snap a picture because we were very hungry!) My husband ordered the "Bier" + Cheese Burger ($16.95), and I ordered the Pork Shank "Schwweinehaxe" ($34). The waitress said she had to check the availability of the Pork Shank, so I told her that if it wasn't available, to put in Chicken Wienerschnitzel. Then she didn't come back to let us know what the kitchen said. My husband flagged her down to find out if the pork shank was available, and she said she'd forgotten to come back, but that it was. He also told her that it was my birthday, so she brought out a cute birthday tea light for the table. The food was absolutely delicious, and for the price point, you can easily see why people are regulars there! The pork shank was enormous! (We ate off of it 2 more times after we took it home. The restaurant gave us extra gravy at no charge, too.) The rosemary mashed potatoes were very good! The presentation was lovely! My husband really enjoyed his burger. Then for dessert, our waitress brought out a slice of tiramisu with a wedge of chocolate cake over it, berries, whipped cream, and a little birthday candle in it. Turned out really wonderful! Will definitely go back to this unique spot!

Note for out-of-town visitors -- I think dining here is more about the aspect of communal dining than expectations for a truly 5-star meal, as I've found the food to be overall average. Especially for the price. The hostess is friendly and helpful. My waitresses have been attentive and kind. The service is good and consistent. The food menu is very limited in options for vegans & vegetarians. They serve beer, wine & spirits. There is a drink menu available upon request for beer, wine and spirits. There was a guitar player playing beautiful live music for the duration of my first visit (Feb 2026). During my most recent visit (8 April 2026), I ordered the Pecan Crusted grouper with red cabbage & seasonal veggies. The grouper was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside & topped with a strawberry mango fruit compote. Both the cabbage and veggies were overcooked which was disappointing bc I appreciate some good texture! The flavors were good though. So if completely softened veggies are your thing, I think you'd enjoy them. To drink, I ordered a mocktail that is new to the drink menu -- a Triple Citrus Paloma. It was refreshingly tart & garnished with a honey dipped Tajin rim! Shoutout to Lucinda for curating it. Additionally, my husband and I shared the salmon croquettes as an appetizers & I had the key lime tart to go.
