Lots of friendly, helpful staff. I was very impressed by the effort their people made to be sure we were being taken care of and getting what we wanted. The food was very good and they have a variety of beers (as you would expect!) of German origin. I tried the Munich beer and found it to be very smooth and drinkable. The portions are good. My only issue was with the bratwurst bun/roll. It is too big and too firm to be able to comfortably eat the sandwich without being a pig. I ended up cutting it up with my knife and fork but that defeats the purpose. The atmosphere is very nice, with an outdoor patio area. I would definitely recommend it and I want to come back to try the dessert and some of the other traditional German food. read more

Unfortunately not the best overall experience. My date and I shared a giant pretzel, which was probably the best part of the meal, because of the variety of mustards that it came with. I got single bratwurst, which came with rye bread, sauerkraut, and potato salad. The bratwurst and potato salad didn't have a lot of flavor. The service wasn't very good. I felt like we were stuck in a corner of the restaurant and kind of forgotten about. To add insult, they automatically added a 20% gratuity. Went to Der Biergarten this past Saturday for lunch not knowing Georgia Tech was playing Tennessee that evening! It was 1:00 in the afternoon and the restaurant was packed with Orange! Yikes! UT everywhere! All I can say is there were a lot of German liters being thrown back! Back to food - my sister-in-law is German, so we ordered some potato pancakes for starters. These were a little overcooked, but ok. I had the wienerschnitzel with potato salad and it was very good, very large portion. My wife got the bratwurst with sauerkraut and potato salad and a side of red cabbage. All were excellent. My sister-in-law got the sauerbratan and she said it was delicious and my brother-in-law got the rinderrouladen, a tender roasted beef rolled up with mustard,onion, bacon and a pickle smothered in a dark gravy! I was blown away eating here. It was my second time visiting, but I haven't been in years, and the food is 10x better than I remember it being. My party of 4, including a toddler, walked in on a Saturday evening around 5:30 pm without a reservation and were seated immediately. We did have to walk up a flight of stairs, and I am unsure if there is an elevator. As soon as we sat down, they started handing out cups of free beer! We also ordered our own and they have a huge selection of German beers on tap, plus cocktails and other bottles of beer. We started the meal with the pretzel appetizer, and wow! It was soft and freshly baked, and it paired perfectly with the mustards. The honey Dijon mustard was my favorite of the three. We then got our entrees, which blew me away. All of the plates of food were massive and so incredibly delicious. It is definitely worth the price. I loved that I could substitute my sauerkraut and potato salad for two other sides, and I am so glad I did. I instead got the Spätzle (pasta) and Rotkohl (red cabbage) with my bratwurst, and I have never been more happy eating German food. Everything was seasoned great, tasty, and importantly, not overly salty. Our waiter was incredibly kind and helpful with the menu. The place is spacious and has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I am glad I visited again because I was reminded how delicious this place is. I will definitely be back! I'll admit that my expectations were low when I came here because the Mr. said he'd hang out here to watch soccer games. I thought the food would be subpar. But I enjoyed my first visit! The staff was friendly and we were able to snag spots at the bar even though it was game day for the Atlanta United team. The Reuben Rolls were yummy. And when we said we'd be splitting the Chicken Schnitzel, they brought it out separated for us which I thought was a nice touch (I still stole a few of Mr.'s fries per usual, though). Don't waste your time. I'm a pretty patient and understanding human. My husband and I had a reservation (just the two of us), showed up exactly on time, and were seated. From there, we proceeded to be ignored by four different staff members for over 15 minutes. The room was pretty open, and it looked like they had just slowed down after being busy. The manager passed us on multiple occasions without so much as a glass of water on the table, and then proceeded to tell us to have a nice night when we passed him on our way out the door. If you're craving authentic German food served with a side of lively energy, look no further than Der Biergarten. A group of us stopped in one evening and left wishing we could bottle the atmosphere and take it home. Between us we tried a little bit of everything, schnitzel, spaetzle, bratwurst, knockwurst, pretzels, and of course plenty of beer. Everything was bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. I had the Wurstplatten, which was a hearty, satisfying plate showcasing the best of their sausages, and paired it with a Spaten Märzen that was smooth, malty, and absolutely spot-on. The Reuben rolls deserve their own paragraph, crispy on the outside, melty and savory inside, one of the best bar snacks I've ever had. We stopped here while exploring downtown before the FIFA World Cup game. The food was okay, nothing great but also nothing awful about it. A few things to make sure you know when you go, they include a 20% service fee on your check and still ask for a tip afterwards. This may be normal for a city restaurant but confused us up front. Also, they do family style seating here for smaller groups (this might be just because of the crowds - not sure). They have large picnic tables inside and will seat multiple groups at these. While this didn't really bother us, if you are going for privacy, unless you have a large group, you won't get it here. Outside of this the server was friendly and we got our food quickly. read more

My mom and I went here for the Schlagerparty that was being hosted by the Goethe-zentrum Atlanta. We typically don't venture out here due to how far away it is from our town but we make exceptions now and then. The location was a little odd due to the restaurant being on top of another restaurant but we were pleasantly surprised. This was a wonderful time. We were not doing well in Atlanta and definitely needed a pick up. As I suspected the food was authentic and pleasingly welcome. Of course I over ate. It's a Biergarten. Right? The atmosphere is very reminiscent of a German Biergarten. It's dark with strategic lighting for that intimate experience. Many of our people are overweight and unattractive, so best to dim the lights. lol. The service was excellent. I even taught the server how to cuss in German. I can't discuss the topping-off-of-the-steins; you can trust me when I say they'll take good care of you. Pro Tip: if you have 5 or 6 folks in your party, consider the König Ludwig Platte. For $135 you'll get bratwurst, jägerschnitzel, wiener schnitzel, knackwurst, sauerbraten and a whole roasted chicken. It also includes sauerkraut, potato salad, red cabbage and spätzle (a German pasta). It's the best way to sample all the different flavours and there is something for everyone. Lecker! I lived in Germany for 16 years so always eager to get a taste of home. It's set up like a biergarten which I liked. We were seated right away. I ordered a dark beer (can't recall which one) which was really good. For dinner I got the bratwurst plate. You can choose if you want the same two wurst's or one of each. I got one of each and it came with saurkraut and kartoffelsalat (potato salad). I also ordered a side of spatzle as I couldn't pass that up. The food came out pretty quickly. I really wanted to love this place because I love German food and don't get it often. We started with the Giant soft pretzel with the cheese spread and potato pancakes. The pretzel was good, but it wasn't soft. It was crunchy on the outside, like it had been quickly warmed in the oven. I loved the cheese spread. The potato pancakes were very flat, which is kind of a weird thing to say, but that made them very crispy all the way through, instead of having that creamy middle that I was craving. They were served with a warm bowl of very creamy, very smooth, hot, spiced applesauce. For my entrée I had the jaeger schnitzel that came with cheesy spaetzli. The gravy and mushrooms were excellent but sparse. The schnitzel itself- pork- was heavily breaded and a bit overcooked. I could taste the burnt-ness of it. I couldn't taste the meat over the breading. The spaetzle was tasty but cold and stuck together. The restaurant itself is charming and cute. Our server was excellent. We went here spur of the moment. We don't usually go downtown, so we were surprised by parking prices. We paid $20 for three hours. The lot was a short walk (less than a block) from the restaurant. From an accessibility standpoint, the sidewalk was very uneven, and the restaurant is up a steep flight of steps. The beer list is great and my husband was excited to see some of his favorites on tap and some beers he hasn't been able to find in years. We got the giant pretzel, the sausage appetizer, the stuffed corned beef, and the schnitzel with mushroom sauce. All were great except the schnitzel which was far too salty for me. Service and the kitchen were slow, but I wonder if the place was understaffed. Once we were seated (after a 20 min wait), the server who took our order only came back to deliver the entrees (after about a forty five min wait). However there was a bartender who moved between the bar and our table seamlessly. We're looking forward to going again and trying more of the food. We'll try to sit next to a tv next time. Surprisingly there is a German restaurant so close to Georgia Tech! The restaurant was very big, with two bars and a patio. I only went there once and tried their bratwurst platter. It was just 14 but definitely filling. I also got a side of braised red cabbage. Everything tasted good at first, but many was too salty and oily, especially the bratwurst and the braised red cabbage. So I ended up not finishing all of them.
