There used to be a Denny's on Ellice Avenue at St. James Street. I went there often when I lived in this city. I recall saying to my friend that we needed to go to Denny's for dinner. I liked the alliteration. That location has since closed for good. However, this Denny's isn't too far away from it. This eatery is a part of the Sandman Hotel and is near the airport. I came here on my birthday for lunch. You can choose from a free original grand slam or build your own grand slam on your birthday. There was lots of parking in front of the hotel. I found an available spot to park my vehicle and walked in. It didn't take long for someone to greet me and lead me to a booth. Nancy was my server. She was efficient, friendly, and exceptionally competent. I let her know that it was my birthday. She smiled and nodded. She didn't ask for proof, which was refreshing. She let me know what my options were. I kept it simple and ordered the original grand slam. My original grand slam consisted of these items: - Scrambled eggs - Bacon - Sausage - Pancakes The only item that I paid for was a Diet Coke. I got unlimited refills. Nancy was attentive, making sure that I always had Diet Coke. It was cold and fizzy. My food was delicious. The scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly. I loved having bacon and sausage. I didn't have to decide. I got both! They were yummy. I loved my pancakes. They were fluffy with butter on top. I got a bottle of maple syrup, which I happily used. Perfect! I paid for my drink and tipped generously at the table. I paid with a credit card. Done! I used the washroom before I headed down to the south end of the city. It was clean. No complaints! The staff is great and very friendly. My twin sister and I go here once a week after we go shopping. The staff know us and come over and repeat our order to make sure we aren't going to make any changes. The food is great, portions are very good, prices are fair. Omelette can also be made as per your choice, other than the ones on menu. I had omelette with mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese... made nicely. Had the new cold brew coffee, it's good!! This Denny's is attached to the Sandman hotel at the south west intersection of Sargent and Century. Airport hotels - I've been to a few. So many of them are the same and if you travel a lot (I only do occasionally) I'd imagine the place of rest is where you can recuperate, rejuvenate and just relax... that is until you have to wake up at 3:30am to go to the airport. Thankfully the Sandman near the Winnipeg airport is quite close so the drive is short and suite (did you see what I did there? It's not cheesy, c'mon). The Sandman hotel in Winnipeg - I've stayed here before just last year. Last year I was feeling more balling so I went to the other restaurant attached to the hotel, Chop which is a steakhouse in the Keg/Canyon Creek sort of echelon. Good place and nearby considering not having to actually exit the hotel to get the the restaurants are a huge win for the tired, sleep deprived, hungry individual like myself. This Denny's is accessible from the hotel! Just take the hallway on the first floor all the way east to the end and go out the doors and make a left. Voila! Chez Denny awaits you. What also makes this place kind of special is that it's 24 hours. 24 hour restaurants in hotels are amazing. Last time I mentioned I went to Chop because I felt like having a proper sit down meal with a big meaty dish. The thing is I did the exact same thing at Denny's for just a fraction of the price. OK sure Denny's is not Chop but it's it own thing. Denny's is faster type of food sure, it's a diner not a steakhouse but really having access to breakfast which includes bacon, sausages, eggs or other diner type dishes 24 hours a day is a pretty amazing thing to have access to. Years ago I went to a Denny's in Mississauga by the Courtney Park AMC (at the time, now Cineplex) and I was not pleased. I had ordered what they called their country fried steak at the time. This was a horrible rendition of something that is sacred in the south. That's one of my absolute pet peeves being in Canada. Where is the access to country fried/chicken fried steak? Seriously who has this and why don't we have more of it? We don't have Bob Evans, Cracker Barrel etc I get that but it's not something that should be such a remote experience that we simply don't have a proper or at least somewhat decent version of it. Seeing as how I wanted to give this place a chance for their country fried steak I did that. Last year when I stayed closer to the office at the Best Western on Portage in Headingley they had a Denny's there. I believe I had ordered the country fried steak there and it was just OK. This go around on Sargent at the Sandman I was very pleasantly surprised. This iteration was practically American. Sausage gravy on top but not too much to make the fried steak lose its crunch, beef gravy on the mashed potatoes which didn't taste like they were instant and get this... zucchini and squash as a side veggie! Gone is the corn / green been / carrot frozen type trio. These veggies were actually really good. A bit salted with pepper sure but the gravies (plural) easily diluted the savoriness of the spiced veggies with rich lubricated liquified artery clogging gunk - just the way it should be. I'll tell you what (said in that Texas accent which is a phrase that could be a drinking game if you've ever watched Friday Night Lights - TV series) this country fried steak was really good, really filling and the best country fried steak I've ever had in Canada, ever! The service here is really friendly. The staff here are smiling and happy to serve it seems which is definitely what you want when you've had a long day and all you want is a nice hot meal. Honestly I have to give it up to this Denny's and their revamped country fried steak which for me is a staple dish whether it's for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Decided to celebrate a birthday with a breakfast outing. Denny's has a good offer that kids with a birthday eat free so that sold us. The service I have to say was excellent. Our server did a great job and made our birthday girl feel special. The food was okay. The veggie omelet was 'okay' adn the kids birthday pancakes did not measure up to the photo on the menu. One Saturday morning my girlfriend suggested we try Denny's for breakfast this time for our breakfast adventure. We were not disappointed. I am going to talk about two occasions, but first a little description. The place is near a hotel, so I think the parking may get a little crowded a times. Inside the restaurant is decently sized and could probably hold about 50 or so people. The decor was fine. Nothing fancy, but nothing harsh either. It was a comfortable neutral. There have a large assortment of breakfast items, which is great considering they have breakfast 24/7. They also have a good assortment of other food, like burgers, chicken fingers, etc. The first time we went we decided to try something that was new to the menu and new to us. It was a country fried steak breakfast combo which was $10. However, we first decided to get some Pancake Puppies cause they looked good and boy, were they YUMMY. I could have just ordered the 10-pack and I would have been satisfied and the 6-pack only cost $3, if I remember correctly. Then we were served our steak combo. It came with the steak, hash browns, bacon, sausages and eggs. it was good, but my girlfriend and I don't usually eat steak and with so much other food plus the pancake puppies, we didn't even finish it. The hash browns were good, but I prefer them all cooked to a nice golden brown then having only the top portion golden brown from the stove. I don't really eat sausage, but I could not complain about them and the bacon and eggs were good. In the end we decided never to order that steak combo again. It was good, but too much. The second time we went there was fantastic. You know that meal that you find at a restaurant that even if you can't decided what to get, you can't go wrong with getting it again? Well, I found it: The Belgian Waffle Slam. A plate sized, waffle with butter and syrup, served with a side of bacon or sausages and eggs for only $10. It smelled and tasted divinely. I cannot remember what my girlfriend got, but I believe she enjoyed and it was about $10. We also got a 10-pack of Pancake Puppies. Yum. Both times, the staff were friendly and usually around if you needed anything else. The owner even walks around at times to see how everyone is doing and even help out if the customers need anything. One last little note, if you are going for juice I recommend the Ruby Grapefruit. Its fantastic. Well, there you have it. One good and one fantastic experience has made this a regular hangout for my girlfriend and I to eat breakfast at. I highly recommend it for the prices and the food. Plus, breakfast is 24/7. I think this may be the only place in the city that's open 24 hours and has free wifi, so they get major points for that. The decor is nicer than most Denny's I've been in to, the service is good and the food is pretty consistent - nothing spectacular, but tasty, filling fare. My only real complaint, and that knocks this place down to four stars, is that the wifi kind of sucks. It's a bit slow, but more importantly so, so many websites are blocked. I get it that you don't want people surfing porn in your restaurant, but even sites like Yelp and MakeupAlley are inaccessible. I'd hang out here more when I need a late night spot for internet and a snack, but the internet is so restricted it's frustrating - it's definitely not the same as surfing at a cafe. read more

I haven't been here too much but I thought I'd write a review anyway. The first time I came here, my bf and I got the full order of nachos as an appetizer before our meal. Let me tell you, these are the best nachos I ever ate. They are definitely not shy with the meat & cheese. They are so filling that by the time our food came, we were stuffed. Next time, we opted for the 1/2 order. The second time we came here, I ordered the banana foster french toast. Can you say yum. French toast came out in a skillet drenched in the caramel sauce and I immediately thought "Oh no, this is going to be too sweet!" Too my surprise, the caramel sauce was very light. There was slices of banana here and there. Mmmm...definitely recommend it! Service was good except there was one really loud waitress that talked behind customer's backs and talked down to other employees. You can tell she had more experience here than the others. Going in thinking that all Denny's are created equal, we were not prepared for the Worst Denny's experience ever. I love the All American Slam when in need of some comfort food and was so happy that Dennys has a location close to our home for I was in real need of comfort food. Order placed, we could not have been prepared for what ensued. To set the tone was the terrible smell in the air leading us to believe they may have been having an issue with their exhaust system. The odour of overly grilled food permeated the restaurant and of course got into our clothes as well. After waiting for a half hour for our brekkie, I watched our meals sit under the heat lamps with no one expediting them to our table. When we were able to flag someone down to ask to have our food delivered, yet another person brought them over stating they were waiting on the toast as they don't like to send out orders incomplete. Well you know what? I don't like cold eggs and the toast they waited so long for was multi grain, and I had ordered sourdough. Both meals were cold, sausages were greasy and cold, a terrible combo, and if it weren't for the fact that we were starving and pressed for time because of all the time we had already waited, we would have sent the food back and left the building. The one star is for the original waitress who tried all she could to salvage the visit and did reduce the cost of our meal by 50% without us even asking. My eggs tasted like mcdonalds burgers, my pancakes like a bag of flour. Was not a fan

I'm writing this as I sit in Denny's. With tax, my bill came to 16.77 for a less than mediocre (very greasy) mushroom swiss burger which took 1/2 hour to deliver and a cup of coffee. Considering that there were only 3 other tables occupied in the restaurant and the gentleman who came in 10 minutes after me was served his food first, something was wrong. I had a clear view of the waitress making milkshakes and my question is, if you use a scoop to scoop out the ice cream from the freezer, why do you use your fingers to remove the ice cream from the scoop and put it in the container? If there was wifi in the restaurant, it wasn't working. I doubt I'll return. Denny's has become a very expensive lunch for not very good food. read more

My mother and I went to the Denny's for brunch and it was absolutely one of the best experiences we've ever had. I got the eggs benedict and was given the option of how I would like my eggs and most places only give it to you one way. The wait staff were very friendly and attentive. Never had an empty cup of coffee while eating because they would offer more. And frequently come to ask how our food was. The supervisor had also come by to make sure we were doing well and that everything was good. I visited here today with my 2 young children for brunch. It was busy but the manager, who's name I later found out was Kevin, made sure we were quickly seated. Needless to say I was thrilled! My waitress was pleasant and helpful. She didn't hover but was there when I needed her. The food was ok, standard Denny's eats, but it was the staff that made my experience go from good to great. I couldn't be any happier with the food I ate here. It was fantastic. We went 4/24/15. The food was Perfectly cooked, just the way I ordered. We started off with a mozzarella stick appetizer. Then I ordered the Superbird sandwich with fries. My boyfriend had the Spaghetti. Our appetizer came out so quick and it was so hot. Shortly after we finished, our food was done. Everything tasted perfect. Our server was a really nice girl. She checked up on us. Made sure our drinks were always full. When we entered, the place was clean. The staff was all friendly and happy. It felt so comfortable. We will be coming back again. The only reason why this Denny's getting 4 stars is because of the supervisor. He was very kind but his teeth were really bad and I think personally that doesn't set the mood.. Overall we will be returning. read more
