Four of us were there celebrating our lifelong friendship. We sat in the sunroom (I highky recommend sitting here). Ethan was our server and he was wonderful. Very charming and did everything to make our evening very special. He gave good recommendations and was very attentive without being intrusive. I had the prime rib with Yorkshire pudding, garlic mashed potatoes and roasted red peppers (I specifically asked for those) and my dinner was 5 stars. For dessert I had their Key Lime pie which was melt in your mouth scrumptious. If you want a memorable and wonderful dinner, I highly recommend The Gates. read more

My wife and I took her mother here for her birthday and it was all our first time here. The first thing you'll notice is that the property and surrounding land is beautiful. We came for an early dinner on a Wednesday so it was very quiet in the restaurant. I started with scallops which were cooked perfectly and had a very tasty aioli. For our entree's I had the beef tenderloin, my wife had pork tenderloin and my mother in law had a chicken linguini. My beef was cooked perfectly medium rare and was awesomely seasoned. The accompanying vegetables were great and I had an order of asparagus with bernaise. The bernaise was thicker than I expected but still had good flavour. My wife's pork was filled with apples and other things and wrapped in prosciutto. She said it was the best one of the best pork dishes she had. The Gates on Roblin is about 5 mins west of the Perimeter highway (from Roblin Blvd). It's a pretty restaurant situated in an old converted house, there's even a small stable of horses in the front as you turn into the restaurant's driveway. There's always lots of weddings going on in the summer in the rented tents in the back. The food is regional Canadian cuisine with most appys in the $12-$15 with soups around $8. Their main dishes range from $25-$45. There's 2 fish dishes, 1 seafood risotto, roast chicken, bison shortribs, berkshire pork on one side of the menu and then the other side is more focused on steaks and prime ribs. There's a bison steak that's about $45, rack of lamb (half $35, full $45), various cuts of steak and different sizes of prime ribs. You get seasonal vegetables and a choice of roasted potatoes/whipped potatoes/wild rice pilaf. It may sound a bit pricey but I have to say the portions are quite generous. There's not many fine dining restaurants where I have to take a doggy bag home. A warm freshly baked basket of bread with herb whipped butter is offered immediately after you order. It is delicious. They're tiny buns that are sliced in the middle - warm and yummy. There were multigrain, white buns and a cake like cornbread (which was so good). We tried their foie gras ($21) since the rest of the appetizer list didn't appeal to us - it's fairly consistent with what is offered at most places. Yes, foie gras is always a pricey treat but the portion size was kinda stingy. It was served on one medium crostini sitting on top of some sauteed mushrooms. Yeah, it doesn't take much to get filled up on this fatty item but I've had foie gras in so many restaurants that I was shocked by the portion size. Oh well, but at least it tasted good. Rich, velvety and well prepared. I've had their prime rib before on another occasion - it was good but not great. So this time, I opted for the half rack of lamb with wild rice pilaf and the seasonal veggies (shredded carrots, zucchini, and broccoli). The portion size was huge - which was quite comical since the foie gras appy was so tiny. The half rack was cut up into 5 pieces - I asked for medium rare and I have to say some pieces were more rare than others but I ate it anyways. They were very tender albeit a bit fatty. The sauce was amazing and so flavourful - there was a hint of lavender honey in there too. There was a generous portion of veggies that were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The wild rice pilaf is delicious if you like wild rice, not heavily seasoned at all, just cooked in chicken broth. I really enjoyed this dish and took home half of my dish too! The pickerel special that night was $32, and was prepared sort of florentine style but with a pesto sauce. It tasted nice but didn't wow me in taste - maybe some acid would've helped perk up the flavours. The whipped potatoes are really nice without being too buttery and creamy. Service is warm and the ambiance is quite nice depending on where you're seated as some areas have larger parties. They also serve a Sunday brunch which is in the high $20 range - apparently it's quite good from what I've heard. read more

The Gates was the perfect venue for my parents' surprise anniversary - they were accommodating, friendly, efficient, and professional. Laura, the Event Manager, was a dream to work with; she always replied to my (several) e-mails and questions promptly and gave us complete control of all aspects of the event. Our server was lovely as well, sadly I didn't catch her name. Our meals were incredible, everyone raved about the food quality throughout the afternoon. Always a special treat to have brunch here. My go to spot for an special occasion. The food is always bang on and the potatoes! I still have dreams of them. Make sure you save room for desert. Have yet to be here post covid and I'm scared the chocolate fountain might be a casualty. As well as the rest of the buffet I suppose. Now I'm scared. read more

The Gates on Roblin is an excellent venue for a special date night. My SO took me here for our anniversary last weekend. I have nothing but positive to say about it! Friendly service, excellent food and ambient! We had a double cream brie to start. It was served with kale pesto, roasted garlic, apples, sliced almonds. It was absolutely delicious! For entree, we had the pork tenderloin with mushroom, brie, apple, walnuts. wrapped in prosciutto, and we also had the slow roasted prime ribs that was served with garlic whipped potatoes. The prime ribs were excellent, it was at expectation. For the pork tenderloin, we honestly can't tell you what they did to it but it was absolutely DELICIOUS! We honestly had no idea on how one could make the pork so flavourful but somehow the chef did it! They did a phenomenal job on the meals. For dessert, we had the Peach Cobbler and the Chocolate Burborn Peacan Flan. They were excellent! We would highly recommend this place to all, esp on special occasions! read more

Recently had a business meeting in one of their rooms. There were 14 of us in a fairly small room. It was ok, but a bit small for the number of people . The lunch was served buffet style. Sandwiches, excellent mushroom soup, veggies. All presented very well. Food was very fresh. Returned for dinner. All of the meals were excellent. Steaks, prime rib, mushroom Wellington. All excellent. The only reason I did not give the restaurant a 5 star is due to the service being rather slow. Our dinner took almost 3 hours. On a weekend with friends this would have been fine, but for a group business dinner, it was too slow. I would highly recommend this restaurant for individuals having dinner. read more

The Gates of ??? on Roblin. Is this a case of a restaurant in beautiful building, surrounded by scenic grounds, being managed poorly? I agree that one cannot judge a place based on 1 visit. That said, the experience was strong enough to form a lasting first impression. First off, be warned that the nicely varied menu comes at a steep price. Just one example is the $34.00 prime rib entrée (8 oz). Add 7 bucks for a house salad. Although the place was nearly empty, it took well over an hour for dinner to arrive. Yes, we were a crowd of 14 (but had made reservations well in advance). The, un-named, server literally threw the dinner napkin at one guest who had neglected to withdraw the linen from the wine glass (the birthday girl). The same server really tried to push the more expensive wine. We settled on the house brand which sufficed nicely. When asked if the, nearly raw, pickerel could be sent back to the kitchen, the un-apologetic staff agreed - but only after informing the guests that the meal was prepared in accordance with the chef's taste. The dessert menus were un-ceremoniously snatched back after we advised the server that we were forgoing after dinner treats. Perhaps the guest is expected to overlook the slow and snooty service and pay for a pricey meal because the view is so pretty? There wasn't an option to "vote" with my credit card as the 15% gratuity was automatically added to the bill. read more

This is our family's go to brunch destination. We often find ourselves here on festive occasions and is one of the best bunch options in Winnipeg. This review is for the weekend brunch at the Gates. (not lunch or dinner) The atmosphere is intimate, and groups in each of the small enclaves are small. Whether it's a large group or an small group the setting is comfortable for all. Diner's are simply spoiled for food options. All breakfast favorites are available; eggs Benedict, omelets, desserts, bacon, sausage, a variety of breads, veggies, and I could go on and on. However, it's the additional meat station (Prime Rib, Lamb, Pork) and the crepe station that really won me over. Having been at many of the brunches offered at many of Winnipeg's hotels this is definitely our families favorite. read more

We have spent many family functions here, from birthdays parties, graduation, confirmation and a 50 anniversary party, but unfortunately will not providing them anymore of our business. We tried to go to brunch and had a gift certificate that had expired. We asked if we could use it they said they won't honour it. Most restaurants these days don't put on expire dates and are still willing to honour them as it is good business practices. The host was comfortable turning away a $45.00 GC. So not only did they loss my business today they will no longer have any future business. read more

We made Mother's Day brunch reservations only to be called 1 week before and be told the person who took our reservation didn't know what he was doing and they could not accommodate us! We now can no longer get a reservation anywhere else being this close to Mother's Day. They person on the phone made excuse after excuse that it was not their problem and even told me that people book a year in advance. How is that relevant to me I made a reservation weeks before! In the end they blamed the person who took the reservation! If he is incompetent then why is he answering the phone? Also why am I getting a call 1 week before! They did try to offer me a sitting 3 hours later than what I booked in the mid afternoon basically when the brunch would be over. We already had plans made after our booked brunch so that was not an option. So disappointed we will never go here again and beware if you call to make a reservation it may not be a competent person you talk to! read more
