Recently, I attended a wedding that was catered by Storm at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG). They're…read morethe exclusive caterer of the WAG, Millennium Centre and Fort Gibraltor. Foods at weddings can be quite the disappointment due to crazy logistics and volumes at these events. But I have to say that I was impressed with the food. The appys consisted of mushroom bruschetta, vegetable wontons w/ plum suace, Thai chicken skewers, California roll, goat cheese with fresh herbs on tomato slices and a panchetta item. Overall, the appys were cooked properly and tasted good; an average to good showing here. I was impressed that the chicken skewers were quite juicy (and unusually large). The bread basket was pretty good as I ate 3 rolls to tie me over till dinnertime. They were the usual, whole wheat, white and pumpernickel dinner buns but tasted quite fresh! The Roasted Tomato Bisque with Puff Pastry Cheese Straw was really good despite the fact that it was a really hot summer night. The baby green and beet chip salad with sautéed red onion & goat cheese served with a calamata vinaigrette was a delicious salad. The salad was fresh and was not wilted. I loved that they didn't cheap out on the goat cheese as so many kitchens wimp out on that. The beet chip sounded interesting but really, just tasted like a chip from those vegetable chip assortments - I would've preferred roasted beets instead. The main was basil pesto, smoked mozzarella & braised leek stuffed chicken with a sun dried tomato cream sauce. It also came with potatoes, asparagus, red peppers, zucchini and shredded beets. I liked everything about this dish except for the cream sauce as it was too rich and heavy for me. Not that I would've wanted the proverbial brown sauce on chicken. Overall, a great dish as the chicken was super moist (pretty amazing feat as the whole reception was running about an hour behind so I'm sure that threw the kitchen's timing off). The vegetables were all cooked perfectly. The dessert was a Chocolate Bomb drizzled with White Chocolate with Raspberry Coulis & Chantilly Cream. It tasted more like a gelato as it wasn't quite an ice cream. It was a nice dessert - better than a cake! Service was decent - food came out pretty quickly to all the tables. The bartenders were efficient in making drinks as I recall visiting them pretty often! Overall, good caterers as the food here was on par or even better than what I've ever had at the Fairmont or Fort Garry events.

The meal was alright (pork with some sort of blueberry sauce, grilled vegetables and potatoes), but the ice cream (or whatever it was) served for dessert was not very good at all. It was full of ice crystals like stuff you forget about in the freezer for a year. Also, I found their mini poutines to be lack lustre and the pink in the middle hamburger sliders left me somewhat concerened about food safety. Oh, and the redheaded waitress needs to check her shitty attitude at the door (no, I wasn't rude to her - I know waiting tables is not easy and I'm therefore very polite to servers, bartenders, etc. This girl was just rude!).

Well first off.....this Andy person must work for the company because his opinion is as bland like…read morethe chicken. While shuffling through with the herd to get our meal, my eyes gazed upon the almighty meatball. My spirits were instantly lifted as something was before me that reminded me of my childhood. Instantly I had images of an old Italian woman rolling meatballs in a Sicilian valley village, while sitting in her kitchen with the windows open the, drapes fluttering in the breeze, sounds of young children playing football on the dust cover trail which led through the village. I felt all was good in the world. I had made extra room on the plate, skipped most of the items that were laid before me for these little balls of meat heaven. It was time. I was next. Like a Moscow soup line the lady scooped up 5 heavenly balls of meat, my eyes grew larger as the ladle made its way to my plate. But then as soon as it was within serving distance 2 of the meatballs where taken from me and placed back into the hot serving plate..... Sadness came over me.... The lady had made quick eye contact and turn to the next person.. "Excuse me" I said "would it or possible to get those two meatballs place on my plate, they belong with their bothers and sisters that were already on my plate?" The lady then turn her head and with a stern look in her eyes replied...."NO!" "NEXT!" I was speechless, a wave of emotions came over me.... Was I a bad person? Was my past coming back in a vengeance? So confused! With my head held low I made my way back to my assigned table... My appetite was slowly retreating. But I took the high road and thought I should be grateful for just having these lovely balls of meat being place on my plate. Within the first bite I realized something was amiss. No little woman from Sicily Rolling meatballs, no children playing soccer no breeze coming through the window. These meatballs were just that meatballs. I was devastated. :( The whole experience has taken the wind out of my sails for my love meatballs. I do not think I can recover from the experience I had that evening. Meatballs are dead to me now. Rest of the supper was good.

I began my meal with a large bowl of avgolemono soup, served with a dinner roll, while my brother had a Greek salad of romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and peppers topped with feta cheese and olives dressed with an olive oil and red wine vinaigrette. Both my brother and I ordered Moussaka which included layers of sauteed eggplant, zucchini, and potatoes with both meat sauce and bechamel sauce. Interestingly, my brother and I each asked for rice with our Moussaka. Vegetables included cauliflower, broccoli, beets, and carrots. The third member of our group ordered Gyros, a blend of lamb and beef spiced with herbs, and he ordered rice as well. The restaurant brought my brother a small piece of Baklava on the house since it was his 75th birthday. I ordered cheesecake which was light and fluffy along with a pot of Earl Grey tea. Our entire meal was absolutely delicious with all dishes being served piping hot. I would highly recommend visiting Homers for superb food and decent sized portions. Respectfully submitted, Donn K. The food is always amazing with very generous portions and it is packaged beautifully with take out containers in a nice cardboard box. They always have the food ready on time for pick up, and they do a great job of keeping the lobby organized for safe and distanced pick ups. We live in the South end of the city, and the food is always hot and fresh when we get it home thanks to the great packaging. We usually get chicken souvlaki, with the lemon potatoes and Greek salad. Sometimes we also add soup and/or moussaka or hummus as an appetizer. Everything we have tried is excellent! They even include fresh baked buns with the take out orders!
