Foods at weddings can be quite the disappointment due to crazy logistics and volumes at these events. But I have to say that I was impressed with the food. The appys consisted of mushroom bruschetta, vegetable wontons w/ plum suace, Thai chicken skewers, California roll, goat cheese with fresh herbs on tomato slices and a panchetta item. Overall, the appys were cooked properly and tasted good; an average to good showing here. I was impressed that the chicken skewers were quite juicy (and unusually large). The bread basket was pretty good as I ate 3 rolls to tie me over till dinnertime. They were the usual, whole wheat, white and pumpernickel dinner buns but tasted quite fresh! The Roasted Tomato Bisque with Puff Pastry Cheese Straw was really good despite the fact that it was a really hot summer night. The baby green and beet chip salad with sautéed red onion & goat cheese served with a calamata vinaigrette was a delicious salad. The salad was fresh and was not wilted. I loved that they didn't cheap out on the goat cheese as so many kitchens wimp out on that. The beet chip sounded interesting but really, just tasted like a chip from those vegetable chip assortments - I would've preferred roasted beets instead. The main was basil pesto, smoked mozzarella & braised leek stuffed chicken with a sun dried tomato cream sauce. It also came with potatoes, asparagus, red peppers, zucchini and shredded beets. I liked everything about this dish except for the cream sauce as it was too rich and heavy for me. Not that I would've wanted the proverbial brown sauce on chicken. Overall, a great dish as the chicken was super moist (pretty amazing feat as the whole reception was running about an hour behind so I'm sure that threw the kitchen's timing off). The vegetables were all cooked perfectly. The dessert was a Chocolate Bomb drizzled with White Chocolate with Raspberry Coulis & Chantilly Cream. It tasted more like a gelato as it wasn't quite an ice cream. It was a nice dessert - better than a cake! Service was decent - food came out pretty quickly to all the tables. The bartenders were efficient in making drinks as I recall visiting them pretty often! Overall, good caterers as the food here was on par or even better than what I've ever had at the Fairmont or Fort Garry events.

The meal was alright (pork with some sort of blueberry sauce, grilled vegetables and potatoes), but the ice cream (or whatever it was) served for dessert was not very good at all. It was full of ice crystals like stuff you forget about in the freezer for a year. Also, I found their mini poutines to be lack lustre and the pink in the middle hamburger sliders left me somewhat concerened about food safety. Oh, and the redheaded waitress needs to check her shitty attitude at the door (no, I wasn't rude to her - I know waiting tables is not easy and I'm therefore very polite to servers, bartenders, etc. This girl was just rude!).

We've enjoyed Extreme Fries many times before and genuinely think they serve some of the best poutine in Winnipeg. The skinny fries are fantastic, and the gravy is easily one of our favourites, so bringing them to our wedding was an easy decision. Bobby was wonderful to work with throughout the process. She was friendly, accommodating, and made sure that guests with dietary restrictions or allergies had options available. Her pricing was very reasonable, and the portion sizes were perfect for a late-night snack. One of the highlights was having the food truck pull right up to the venue. It created such a fun atmosphere, with guests gathering outside, socializing, and enjoying fresh poutine together. We also had several guests visiting from outside of Canada who had never tried poutine before, and they loved it so much they were asking for the recipe afterward! It was also reassuring to hear that both our venue and wedding coordinator had worked with Bobby before and were excited to learn she would be part of our wedding. They spoke highly of both her professionalism and, of course, her poutine. We received so many positive comments from our guests, and we would highly recommend Extreme Fries for any wedding or special event. It was a huge hit and a memorable addition to our celebration.

Public Health & Customer Service Warning - Habanero Sombrero, The Forks…read more If you're visiting The Forks and planning to grab something to eat, I would strongly encourage you to think twice before eating at Habanero Sombrero. I can't speak to how often this restaurant is inspected, but based on my experience, I have serious concerns about its food handling and customer service. I ordered a meal and, after eating a significant portion of it, discovered a long strand of what appeared to be human hair buried in my food. The moment I saw it, my stomach turned. I was horrified, wondering how much of it I may have unknowingly eaten before noticing it. It was one of the most disgusting dining experiences I have ever had. I immediately brought it to the attention of the staff. The first employee I spoke with was genuinely apologetic and immediately offered me a refund. I truly appreciated the sincerity of her apology and was actually about to tell her not to worry about the refund because I understood that mistakes can happen. Unfortunately, before I could say a word, another employee came out from the back, interrupted the conversation, and completely changed the tone of the interaction. In a rude and dismissive manner, he said no refund would be given because I had already eaten the food. He then suggested that I could have been the one who planted the strand of hair, and that he could offer me a complimentary drink instead. Let that sink in. I never asked for a refund. It was offered to me, and I was about to decline it before I was interrupted. Yet, instead of being treated with empathy after finding hair in my food, I was effectively accused of trying to scam the restaurant. I have never felt so insulted, embarrassed, or disrespected as a customer. The employee then went to speak with his boss. I don't know what he told him, but he returned and said the owner would only authorize a complimentary drink or that I could send an email if I wanted to pursue the matter further. Finding hair in food is bad enough. It can happen in any restaurant. What truly defines a business is how it responds when something goes wrong. In my case, the issue wasn't just the hair--it was the way I was treated afterward. Instead of taking responsibility and trying to make things right, I left feeling accused, dismissed, and humiliated. I'll let others draw their own conclusions, but based on my experience, I cannot recommend Habanero Sombrero. If cleanliness, professionalism, and respectful customer service matter to you, I would encourage you to consider the many other excellent dining options available at The

The person who was behind the counter was kind of cold, maybe a case of the Mondays? I asked her about a few items but she really didn't want to answer me. I think she prefers the regulars who just come in, select their items quickly, pay and leave! I won't deduct stars against her less than warm reception because I enjoyed their pastries. I've had their water bread at O Tacho, across the street - it's a nice bread, with a chewier exterior. Their kaiser buns comes in packages of 6 and 12; a package of 6 is $1.30. The buns have a very flaky exterior and leave a ton of crumbs everywhere when you start eating it - not my fav. The turnovers (comes in apple and cherry) are HUGE ($1.25 each). I chose the apple turnover and I really enjoyed it since it wasn't overly sweet like the typical turnover. The egg or custard tarts are sold in a larger size if you want to buy in bulk but they are also sold prepackaged 6 smaller portions for $5.50. They're not the prettiest looking tarts since there's some caramelized spots on the custard (it looks burnt but it's not). The tarts remind me of creme brulee that's been encased in a tougher pastry shell - it's a sweet little treat that's worth trying! They are open 7 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday, closed on Sundays. It's old school so no debit or credit, just plain ol' deniro is accepted.
