Elegant hotel with lovely updated furnishings Toilet would not stop running and staff had it fixed very fast I like tea and they only had coffee in the room. They brought me hot water and an assortment of tea. Thank you!! ( and no charge) Some unpleasant things We found the bed very soft ( and prefer firm bed). They have some rooms with firmer tempurpedic mattresses, but they are above and below an event space that had events planned during our stay and the staff said people report they hear the party When a room opened up after parties were done they did not remember to give to us, though they said they would When we returned for 1 night, they DID assign us a room with a better mattress (219), though it was not tempurpedic. It was more firm. We are in an adjoining room (338) and the person next door is showering and blowing their nose nonstop. It's like I'm right in the shower with him. Other guests also complained about hearing entire conversations from the rooms next door. Excellent location as it's a quick walk to The Forks for food and entertainment, plus the river walk area for running, skating, walking or biking. read more

This used to be THE place everyone wanted to stay. With over 100 years of (haunted) history, it was once the elegance of Winnipeg. It's clear that the current owner has tried to update the place to look more like a Motel 6 than what this beautiful building should be. Cheap renovations and tacky Target bargain furniture and light fixtures have stripped this place of its charm and history. All of the beautiful wood in the unit is painted white now and the hallways are a horrible and depressing dark grey. The furniture is cheap and over sized for the rooms. Room 619 had a bed so tall we had to ask to switch rooms. The front desk suggested they bring us a step ladder instead. Seriously?! We finally switched to 808 which had two regular sized beds that were a normal height and we didn't have to be watched as we went to the bathroom. Not sure why washrooms that face other units don't have window coverings! There are absolutely no amenities in the rooms. No fridge. An $8 plastic bottle of water. A Nespresso with coffee only. You have to ask for tea if you want it. Toiletries in the bathroom need revisiting. They're the same ones from 2010 from L'Occitane; tired, dated and horribly scented. More hotels have switched to more sustainable and options but here, you will still get a shoe mitt and shower cap. One bonus was two robes in each room. There is a small gym but no access to a pool. You can pay $12 next door. Apparently yoga is included, but no one told us about that upon check in for our weeklong stay. The wifi didn't work after the first night and staff weren't overly helpful about it. At $252 a night, this is not what we were expecting. Had we known how downhill this place has gone, we'd have opted for the Holiday Inn. Parking is $22 a night and the front entrance is permanently occupied by crowds of smokers. It's absolutely disgusting. This place is for sale so we really hope that the new buyer will help bring this beauty back from the depths of sadness. read more

We spent 2 nights here - before and after a trip to Churchill. A grand old hotel from 1913 that has been wonderfully maintained and updated. Large rooms with high ceilings band lenty of hot water. Great staff and good buffet breakfast. Easy walk to downtown and the Forks. Recommended. read more

Very nice hotel. The staff was attentive and very polite. My room was great but my view was directly into another guest's room so I had no choice but to keep blinds closed. Some other feedback is as follows: 1) My room had no refrigerator. That's a huge bummer and an inexpensive fix. 2) The TV and movie channels are minimal at best. Many channels showed the same show. You need to amp up the options. I had to watch on my phone because there was nothing good to choose from. Consider Netflix at least. 3) very difficult to manage the temperature. The charged us for a bottle of water in our room each day even though it said NOTHING about not being free (most hotels I have stayed at give a free bottle or two daily) and housekeeping took them when only a sip had been drunk. Beautiful really does not describe this hotel enough. It was more magical if you ask me. It was truly a magical, historic hotel that fit all of our needs. When you first walk up to the hotel, you get a wonderful grand entrance that was so pretty to look at. Once stepping into the hotel, you begin to see the beauty and history right away. I love the openness and how you can see above you. The atrium is beautifully decorated with couches and chairs that really fit the grand, historic theme. We has requested a city view... I'm not sure how much city we were able to see per say, but the room was still so nice. The bed was AMAZING, I mean out of this world comfortable. It was so comfy that I made my husband look at the tag and brand to get the details because I need this at home! It is a historic hotel so there is no fridge in the room or microwave or anything like that, but there is excellent coffee and comfy robes! My only two complaints were the gym and the pool. I did use the gym but it was a little hard to because they apparently let outside parties utilize it too and there was a woman in there being trained by a trainer and they took up the entire side that had weights and things. My other complaint was having to pay to use the pool. We simply didn't but I think when paying the price for the hotel that we did, a free pool should be available. Atrium is beautiful. That's it My room was a corner room. Not impressive view. Stairwell blocked due to wet paint and I guess outside my room was the junkyard for broken appliances? I asked about a pool - I can go next door, pay $9 but they wouldn't be open for 2 days Dinner, you ask? I went to the 1/2 empty restaurant and they were booked solid - I was offered to sit at the teeny bar ( I'm an alcoholic try to avoid those scenes) OR I was more than welcome to eat anywhere here -as hostess sweeps here hand around the lobby. WTF? Dinner was $50 USD. Update I'm back here for return flight out of Winnipeg (would not have chosen, but it was part of the tour package). We stayed at this hotel multiple times as we visit yearly for the Festival in February. It's either this hotel or the fairmont. My gf and I love the Hotel Fort Garry's building and restaurants and staff. We unfortunately had a horrible experience this time as 1 of the security member came to our room and told us we were too loud 1 night. Granted we were loud but we stop speaking loud as soon as he told us but he threatened to kick us out as soon as he visited us. We were threaten immediately with no warning and it definitely scared my gf so she doesn't want to stay here anymore. Our two guests left immediately as we were laughing to loud. We all felt he could have dealt with it differently as these walls are super thin. Regardless we won't be returning to this wonderful building anymore as we were treated like scum. He was likely having a bad shift and this is not professional. We spend over 600$ in their restaurants in 4 days so it's not like we aren't enjoying the hotel. Stayed one night. Line up at check in was long, waited about 10 minutes in line. The front desk seemed overwhelmed with issues and possibly short staffed due to wedding(s). Upon arriving to my room I could see a pool of water on the nightstand which I wiped up. Upon further investigation, I could see filthy nightstand (see pictures). Clearly hasn't been dusted in at least a week, maybe more. I dusted the headboard with a tissue. I didn't complain to the front desk because they already seemed too busy to handle guests. Upon checkout I showed the video of the metal tray and they asked that I send it to the email address they gave me. They comped my $18 parking as an apology. I received an email back saying they are discussing with housekeeping and they hope I come again. I've stayed 3 times now in the last few years and two out of 3, there were issues with cleanliness. I stay at hotels quite frequently and I've never encountered issues like I do at the fort garry. Due to my allergies I cannot stay there again. The one star is for the one good thing - the shower. It's a rainfall shower and it's wonderful. The staff I dealt with in person were nice too. I just wish they would clean the damn rooms! As we pulled up to our home away from home I had a pretty good feeling about this place. Because just the curb appeal alone just gave me the poshest vibe. Be forewarned, do prepare to carry your rollaboard up the stairs. Let's do the room shall we. I adore the whole art deco motif. The weathered chuncky plank wood floors to the iron headboard. Also some touches of modern stuff like the lucite work table. The bed is super comfortable... what else... the bathroom!! OMG I about died when I saw that the amenities are all L'Occitane!! Lotion, Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash, all L'Occitane! To a brand whore like me, this is heaven. Definitely enjoyed my L'Occitane bubble bath. Weeeeee!! The whole facility is really nice. I even got to enjoy their fitness center. A level above it is the pool and steam room. The staff is super nice. Everything is super clean. My stay was definitely super delightful. The Old Gray Mare Ain't What She Used to Be. We were told that this was the best hotel in Winnipeg. If so, there is a very low bar to achieve that. This was a grand old hotel built during the hay day of the railroads. It was designed to impress guests with power and wealth of the railroads and the elegance and prestige of travel by rail. It's a good location especially if you are traveling by rail. The hotel staff are friendly and reasonably efficient. Our bags were in our room by the time we finished check in. The lobby and public areas maintain much of their original grandeur. That is where the good stuff ends. Upper Floors and Rooms The hallways were done in darker shades of gray that gave me the impression of dungeon. They are dark and quite dreary. The rooms are in the same shades that seem depressing. The furniture was probably chosen to keep a 1920's feel. The problem is that wrought iron bed steads make reading or watching TV in bed a challenge. There is no comfortable position. Storage space is limited as are electrical outlets The bathroom seems to have updated last in the 1990's. The ceramic tiles had been drilled and patched a number of times. The random designs are those typical seen in home design magazines 40 years ago. Again, counter space and store space are limited. Towel racks and other wall fixtures were of a very cheap variety--think entry level Walmart style. Some were falling off the wall. Food. Food at the Fort Gary would be called mediocre, if we gave it the benefit of the doubt. The breakfast buffet is very poor. The egg dishes were an imitation of Benedict of Florentine. Those dishes really need to be prepared fresh, not allow to sit in a buffet tray for half an hour. The Benedict sauce had no flavor. The English muffins were soggy and stuck to the bottom of the pan. Really, scrambled eggs would have been a vast improvement. The Oval Room does not do any better for dinner. Food is overcooked, overpriced and under flavored. I had a $55 veal chop that I asked to cooked rare. It came medium well, and that was how they left it. We did two group dinners in a private room. The quality of the food...well, I risk repeating myself. It took staff about half an hour to serve a salad. Then it took another full 60 minutes to serve entrees. That was after our hosts went to the kitchen to see what the problem was. Many of our colleagues did not bother to finish the meal. My advice is to check out other hotels in the downtown area. You have to be able to find better. read more

We took a few day family trip to Winnipeg and I stayed at the Fort Garry Hotel for the following reasons: - wanted a downtown location - my kids wanted a hotel with a pool - I knew this type of hotel (old & historic & grand) would be a different experience The kids were amazed at the size and grandeur of the hotel when we pulled up. Once on our floor, you see that the hallways are wide and the walls, doors, etc. are probably original or at least very old. The room blends modern & old, with comfortable wrought-iron beds and a big TV. The bathroom was white tile on the floor and walls; and while the countertop was dated, it all fit the old theme well. The delivery of coffee/tea/cookies to your room each morning (after filling out a card) was a nice touch. We've heard others talk about how good their breakfast is, but we did not eat at hotel. For the downtown location, we found it was surprisingly very easy to get to from coming from the south on I-29 in the U.S. and Hwy 75 in Canada. That highway brings you within one block on Broadway. The location is a 10 minute walk to The Forks and Museum of Human Rights - which are both musts for a Winnipeg. Other than that, we were slightly disappointed with the downtown. Hopefully it's going through a revitalization (we saw some construction) but it was somewhat dirty with little activity. At least in the areas we went exploring to which covered a large section north and west. But we would stay there again. It's hard for me to go to a city and stay in the suburbs. read more

I stayed Tuesday night at the Fort Garry. It's a lovely old hotel ... almost 100 years old. Apparently there are ghosts but I didn't see/hear any. I had a cute pink room with a very comfy feather bed with five pillows (and two more in closet). There are big heavy robes in the closet, wrapped in plastic to ensure their cleanliness. The shower was great ... lots of pressure (surprising for such an old building) and a rainfall showerhead. Breakfast was included in my room rate ($129). I was expecting cereal and muffins, which there were. But there was also an omelet bar . Yesterday's "Omelet of the Day" was seafood. I had a couple fried eggs ... I've never seen such yellow yolks. The chef and I had a great conversation about food as he was getting them ready. On the side I had peameal bacon and hashbrowns. Yum! If you park your car yourself in the back, it's $12 a night. For $5 more, you can have it valet parked (which I did) which I thought was reasonable. Considering how cold it was yesterday when I was ready to go, it was nice to have my car brought around and toasty warm when I got inside. The Forks Market (shopping and restaurants right on the river) is a five minute walk away. My only complaint is the Internet. Most hotels these days have free WIFI or charge your room. Here you have to buy it from a third party provider and it's not very fast. read more

Gorgeous historic hotel in downtown Winnipeg. Check in and valet staff were impeccable and we felt more than welcomed upon arrival. I was absolutely blown away by our 2 room suite, with full dining room and living space. Bathroom was a tad outdated, but the bedroom more than made up for it and I felt like I was sleeping in a 1920's mansion. Since our stay really only called for about 6 hours of sleeping, we opted to skip the bar downstairs (which I hear is quite lively...with an older crowd). read more

Beautiful building!! Took my nephew and my mom to Winnipeg for a weekend and wanted them to have a nice experienced and this hotel definitely gave them the experienced I wanted them to have. My nephew enjoyed it so much that he said that coming to Winnipeg and staying at this hotel was the highlight of our vacation )we were vacationing at ND and MN). The room we had had 2 double beds and the room was very spacious. I was also impressed with the bathroom! So white and clean!! The beds were comfortable but I think the bed frames needed to be changed as they make a lot of squeaky sounds but I didn't mind because the beds were comfortable! read more

Overall very nice hotel. There was a large wedding reception happening on the floor above and this disturbed us a few times during the night however we were compensated for it. I stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. On the last evening, my truck was broken in to. The manner of how this was dealt with was horrible. The hotel staff offered to secure my vehicle which I accepted the offer. They decided to steal items from my vehicle. I did not authorize anything to be removed from the vehicle. They admitted stealing the item, apologized and were going to mail it to me. It has never arrived. They are now ignoring me. read more

Solid three star accommodations in The Peg. Nice view overlooking the Forks, the main tourist hub of the town. The hotel is one of the grand Railway hotels built in the Golden age of railway travel in the early 1900s. It is an amazing gothic baronial style, complete with a grand two story lobby and ballroom on the 7th floor. In terms of amenities, the hotel is connects to a condo and they share a fitness centre together with a massive pool. Only downside is the corridors are a bit dated and could do with a refresh of the paint and carpets. The rooms are perfectly fine. read more

This hotel is AMAZING and fairly reasonably-priced by US standards. For my cousin's wedding, my family stayed in a huge suite for the weekend. It included two bedrooms, a dining room, a living room, etc. Apparently Robin Williams had "lived" in this same suite for a couple of months while filming a movie! The wedding was held in the huge upstairs ballrooms and was gorgeous. The food was also phenomenal both at the wedding and at brunch in their restaurant the next day. Even the hotel gym was perfect! The only thing I could possibly complain about is that you could hear loud noises such as loud music in our room. However, this usually wasn't much of a problem as our family was producing most of the noise anyways... read more

The Fort Garry Hotel is a historic Grand Railway Hotel in Downtown Winnipeg, and only a block from Union Station. It was built in 1913 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, and was the tallest structure in the city when it was completed. I haven't actually stayed here, but the last time I was here I walked through, hung out, and otherwise tried to soak up the luxurious history of this place. That hits you right at the beginning as I climbed the grand exterior staircase and entered the huge main lobby through those cool doors. Also take a look at the brass mailbox beside the elevators. It is original to the hotel, as are the mail chutes on each floor into which guests could drop their letters. It is also rumoured that a ghost sometimes inhabits Room 202 or might otherwise be seen floating down a hallway. read more

Loved this hotel. Historic site, walking distance to Forks Market. The rooms were very cozy and well appointed. Very comfortable beds. Beautiful bar area for good cocktails and appetizers. The included breakfast was really wonderful with two chefs attending to individual orders and fresh pastries as well as pretty much everything you could ask for. read more

We stayed there in December and were shocked to see the way they redecorated the lobby and the Palm Lounge. We had dessert there and were seated at a table in the lobby, which was full of people and noisy, so we had no privacy. We were very disappointed that they have done away with the live entertainment as well. The Palm Loubge has been a venue for lice entertainment forever and many people went there for the opportunity to see local musicians perform. We were told by an employee that people didn't want live entertainment there but find that hard to believe. Hopefully they will get complaints and will bring back the live entertainment. The lobby and restaurant have been decorated in a boring modern way, which destroys the luxurious atmosphere of the old CP hotels. Very disheartening. read more

This hotel is quite dated, but it has a bit of charm to it. It feels like a real hotel with an old school lobby and even though it's old and has a weird dilapidated staircase they hide behind curtains, I thought it was pretty nice. My bed was insanely soft, and not in a good way. I would sink right into it and it was horrible for my back. I raised the issue and they brought in a "bed board" to firm up the bed for me. It was too big for the bed, but not a big deal. It was just a little bed for one person. I got a room for one adult, so that's fine. Would I have liked a bigger bed? Yes, but it was a small, cheap room. The room did not have anything like a fridge, so saving leftovers (and money) was out of the question. No coffeemakers, but they brought fresh coffee, skim milk and biscotti to me every morning. I filled out a little card that I left on my door and woke up to fresh and a newspaper, which I loved. It's little things like that I appreciated. They also don't give you those tiny little shampoo bottles. There's just a pump so you can use what you need. I thought it was super convenient that they had a little "gift shop" open until 2am that sold water, candy, snacks, etc. The restaurant inside the lobby was also not bad. The oarking was fine -- the lower level underneath is really cramped but I thought the upper level was fine. Everyone was extremely nice, except for one guy. He was supposed to be running the gift shop and seemed very annoyed I needed to buy water when he locked it and disappeared. I asked the front counter if I could buy some water and they found him to open up the shop and he was downright pissy when I asked him how much stuff cost. Importantly, the wifi worked very well, which made me happy. read more

Historic hotel in downtown Winnipeg with awesome public spaces and large rooms, but only "so-so" in terms of the actual room decor, bathroom facility, etc. It feels like whenever they did their most recent room remodel they "ran out of money" when it came to the actual rooms. The tile in the bathroom seems old/dated, the lighting sort of harsh, and there was a constant drip from my faucet. The shower itself was dark (no light above it) and the pressure was only "OK". Again, the room was quite large, the bed and bedding comfortable, but the decor seemed out of place for such a grand and historic hotel. It's like they were trying to be modern but ended up only going part of the way. I was here for a business trip, and a number of us (all using Macs) had problems with the wifi. They were nice enough to install a hub in the conference room we were using so we could wire in via ethernet, but it seems like having Wifi that actually works for everyone would be the norm. And a couple of my colleagues reported problems with the temperature control. Breakfast was good, but pretty pricey. Hotel restaurant/bar closes pretty early, at least compared to some other places I've gone. I do also appreciate that they'll deliver free coffee to your room during breakfast hours, and within just a few minutes. If I were going back to Winnipeg I'd consider staying here again, but I'd keep my expectations in check and wouldn't want to pay too much. read more

Worst customer service ever. Having made a reservation as we plan for a funeral; the terms of the reservation were not identified as non-changeable. Coming from California we looked for a hotel. Less than 18 hours later we found that the hotel was not in a great location for the funeral and requested a cancellation. We spoke with the hotel for 2 hours and were told that even though the change was requested less than 18 hours after the booking and more than 3.5 weeks in advance of the booking. The hotel said there was no compassion or flexibility to their clients suffering through a death in the family. Being a platinum Marriott member I would never recommend this hotel. Having travelled on 5 continents this is not a hotel I would recommend. read more

I was at this hotel for a Tea & Tulips fashion show to support Women Business Owners and Breast Cancer. The ballroom we were in was elegant and decorated beautifully. I have been to many events at this hotel and the atmosphere is always gorgeous. We were served lunch. The salad was fresh with a tangy dressing. The main course was super tender, moist chicken with a delicious au jus, carrots and mini potatoes. The dessert was not my favorite but they get props for being unique... It was a poached pear with a bittersweet chocolate sauce and a personalized Fort Garry dark chocolate. This hotel is always a first choice to turn any event into a chic, classy spectacle. The Fort Garry is a beautiful hotel, inside and out. The lobby and the bar/lounge area are both striking rooms. Sure, as some of the reviews said, the wallpaper isn't perfect, but the bathroom tile was pretty, the shower pressure was AWESOME, and the room was as clean as expected. Having computers in the lobby available for customer use was a nice touch, too. The valet was very accomodating when I left something in my car, and Autumn at the front desk was extremely helpful and polite. The pillows were way too soft for my liking, and I wish I had known the pool area was under construction and unavailable. The price of the room was a little off-putting, but after seeing so many sketchy looking hotels in the area, paying more for a nicer place just made sense. read more
