Tip: If you are doing a kamayan feast, book it at least a day in advance and specify what items you'd like the feast to have.
My good friend and colleague said that he was visiting Winnipeg for the first time. It was cool that he and his partner were in town when I was.
They were in the city for three days. They wanted to do a kamayan feast at Tito Boy Restaurant and ask me if I'd like to join them. It was sweet of them. I said yes to a food coma!
They did all the organizing and selecting what items comprised our feast. I trust my friend, as our tastes are similar and he is my guide to good Filipino food.
The kamayan feast consists of these components:
- Two appetizers
- Three mains
- Two starches
We got these items:
Apps:
- Pork Shanghai lumpia (6)
- Coconut adobo tacos (3)
Mains:
- Chicken inasal
- Pork BBQ
- Pork Sisig
Starches:
- Garlic rice
- Chicken pancit bihon
My friend called and made a dinner reservation for last Sunday at 5 pm. Perfect!
I picked them up from sightseeing. It was wonderful chatting with them as I drove us over to Tito Boy. This eatery is located in a plaza that I had spent a lot of time at two summers ago. It has a Starbucks, No Frills, Liquor Mart, and more.
I parked my rental vehicle in the shade. It was a hot, humid day. We all got out and headed into the eatery.
A friendly woman greeted us while putting giant leaves down on a table. It was for us. We waited at a different table as she set up our table for the feast. She then called us over once she was done.
We got drinks. My friend got an iced ube latte. He let me have a sip. It was yummy. It was creamy and cold. It had the perfect ube flavour that was neither subtle, nor bitter. It was perfect.
We all saw sangria on the menu. Our eyes lit up. We said yes to the one-litre pitcher of calamansi citrus sangria.
My friend and I are sangria enthusiasts. It was nice that his partner was in the same boat. It was the best sangria. It had white wine with fresh fruit, sliced cucumbers, triple sec, and a calamansi mix that was excellent. It was refreshing, tangy, and perfect.
I'd come back just for the sangria. Who needs food?!
Well, we kind of do to not have the alcohol flow through us fast!
We got the pork sisig and chicken pancit bihon first. We put our gloves on to start our feast.
We all thought that it was weird and challenging picking up hot pork sisig and pancit (noodles) with plastic gloves. It was slippery and I actually had to put down the sisig fast because it was hot temperature-wise. We eventually used the spoon that came with the noodles (it was also tough using a spoon to pick up slippery noodles) for the sisig.
The pork sisig was flavourful. However, the egg wasn't as runny as I would have liked it to be. Some pork bits were dry. A runnier egg would have made this dish so much better. The flavour was excellent.
My friend was saying that the vegetables in the pancit were too large. I've had pancit at my neighbourhood Filipino eatery in Markham. He was right. The veggies that I got were chopped finely.
I enjoyed the pancit. It had tender morsels of chicken. The veggies were yummy. The noodles were hot to pick up, but it was much easier to pick up and eat once they cooled.
The remaining items came on a board. Everything looked and smelled yummy.
I was the last person to eat items off the board. It's probably because the sisig and pancit were closer to me, so I started off with them.
My friend and I split the inasal, which was bone-in grilled chicken. He took the chicken leg and I took the thigh part. The chicken skin was crispy and so flavourful. The chicken was succulent. I loved it.
I enjoyed a pork BBQ skewer. Each morsel was yummy and juicy. We all agreed that it was the best protein.
The garlic rice was excellent. It had the perfect amount of garlic with fluffy rice. We loved it so much that we got more.
I was the last person to go for the coconut adobo taco. I liked the creativity of a Filipino-style taco. The coconut adobo was tasty, with pineapple salsa, pickled jalapeno, and calamansi dressing.
I found the taco to be on the wet side, such that the taco wrapper ended up ripping on me with every bite because it was soggy. Maybe it needs a hard shell instead. It was yummy. Just messy to eat.
The lumpia was delicious. Each one was crunchy with the tastiest pork filling. I didn't realize that it came with sweet chili sauce. I ate the first one plain and loved it. It tasted even better with the sauce!
We ordered an ube brownie with vanilla ice cream to share for dessert. So good! It was slightly sweet. The brownie was moist and perfect. The ice cream paired well. Yum!
My friend paid with an American Express card. It's accepted here. It was a lovely, unexpected, generous treat.
I used the washroom before I left. It was a single stall. Clean. No complaints.
We had a great feast here. Such a great find!
