We exited onto US 491 and saw there were many fast food places. And as we were about to pull into McDonald's, we saw a local burger place and since we like to support local whenever we can, we drove across the parking lot to BLAKE'S. My wife was told from a former land of enchantment resident that Blakes was the place for the best burgers. We had the New Mexico burger, which had the green chilies on a double beef patty with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. It was awesome! We also had the season fries, which were super good! We try not to eat too much fast food, so when we do, we want it to be worth it, and this combo meal at Blakes was absolutely worth it! The cashier young lady was sweet and friendly. The fries-station young man had a big smile. And the staff were all friendly. Inside seating area was clean. The restrooms were well attended and had to be opened by the cashier so they were safe. Overall, it was a great experience! And the drive-through line was completely full when we got there and when we left.

This was our first time driving to Albuquerque from San Diego and we were ecstatic to learn that there were three Blake's locations in Gallup. This was the only location that serves breakfast all-day though and my boyfriend is primarily obsessed with the meatless breakfast burrito with red and green chile so we knew this would be our lunch spot. I wasn't feeling a burrito for lunch though and debated between the three chicken options before settling on the chicken strips with upgraded seasoned fries and cherry milkshake. Somehow, we had never tried the seasoned fries before and they will now become a part of our regular rotation as we loved them! Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the chicken as it was just okay. I think my biggest issue though was the ranch, which was can make or break a meal for me, and it definitely broke it here. It tastes like bottled ranch and not fresh homemade ranch, like our other New Mexico obsession (Dion's) makes. I think if the ranch had been better, or if I had asked for barbecue as another dipping sauce option, the chicken would have been more enjoyable too. Luckily, the fries were delicious on their own and the cherry milkshake continues to be one of my favorite things and I'm so glad Blake's offers it as an alternative the other traditional flavors. While the menu and interior are mostly unchanged, some of the quality seems to have declined. The delicious sweet salsa they once served has been replaced with something resembling cheap, store-bought picante sauce. The soda selection was unusual, and the drink I ordered tasted unpleasant. The cheese pizza was delicious, but at nearly $15 for a pizza slightly larger than personal size, the pricing is difficult to justify. Unfortunately, the high prices remain while much of what made Camille's enjoyable seems to have disappeared. I don't anticipate returning.

We came here to celebrate an anniversary and enjoyed a nice dinner. El Rancho Restaurant is called the Silver Screen Café and serves a mix of Southwestern and New Mexican cuisine with breakfast in the morning. Because many celebrities have stayed at this hotel, many of the food items are named after famous actors and actresses. El Rancho Hotel is located on historic Route 66 and opened in 1937 as a place for people in the film industry to stay at while filming movies in Gallup. The entrance to the hotel has a large neon sign above it. Several western movies were filmed in the surrounding area during the 1940s and 1950s. Many movie stars have stayed here including John Wayne, Lucille Ball, Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck and Ronald Reagan. You can check out several old photographs and memorabilia in the hotel lobby. The Silver Screen Café and the 49er Lounge are part of the hotel. We spent some time walking around the lobby area and gift shop before dining at the restaurant. It wasn't too busy for a Sunday evening. The restaurant dining area makes you feel like you are on a ranch with its old cowboy décor and wood beam trusses. I am a big fan of New Mexican cuisine and ordered the Pork & Green Chile Stew to start off with. It didn't disappoint. For our entrées, we ordered the Grilled Chimayo Chile Chicken with Grandma's Mole and Grilled Margarita Shrimp Pasta. I love Mole sauce and very much enjoyed my Chimayo Chile Chicken. We finished the evening off with the Churro dessert. Everything was great, including the service. The Hollywood and Route 66 tributes add to the fun of dining here. There is a lot to look at in both the restaurant and the hotel. There is a door in the restaurant that leads to the 49er Lounge if you want to eat or grab a drink there while watching some sports.

Like everywhere else, you can definitely tell inflation has affected the prices and portions over the years. The burgers aren't quite what they used to be for the price, and meals have gotten pretty expensive, but I still find myself coming back. I usually order their burger meals or chicken tenders. I personally haven't tried much of their Navajo food, so I can't speak on that, but their vanilla shake is one of my favorites. I love the texture and consistency of it. And the box of fries? Always good! There's something about getting that little box packed with fries that never disappoints. Even with the higher prices and some changes over the years, I still enjoy That's A Burger and will continue stopping by. I appreciate having a longtime local place like this in the community and hope they continue to stick around.
