a variety of pastries in a box

Deluise is a cute little bakery my friends and I stopped by just before leaving Providence. Apparently, they've been open for the past 70 years, which is quite impressive, so I had to see what all the fuss was about. The staff was very friendly and helped us pick out a box of assorted pastries which we shared back at our Air Bnb which was quite delicious! I also purchased a savory chicken parmesan pastry to eat for lunch before hopping on my flight back home, and baybaay it was everything; probably my favorite thing I ate from there. All in all, I can see why the DeLuise Bakery has been around for the past 70 years.

I've been wanting to try the donuts out at Deluise Bakery for awhile now. I finally made the trip over. Parking was easy right out front. When I walked in I was surprised at how many donut options they had! They had the chocolate frosted ones they are known for, but also different jelly filled donuts, quite the variety. I also noticed they had many other Italian bakery staples like pizza strips and sfogliatelle. The donut itself was light and fluffy and the frosting on top was tasty. The jelly in the jelly donuts seemed to be homemade and was quite tasty as well. The girl manning the counter was friendly and the prices were super reasonable. I will be back again soon!

This review is based on my visit in February for the #BestDonutsRI competition. We arrived after 8am on a Saturday. Parking is on the street, and we were lucky to find one in front of the bakery. There was a good amount of bakery goods and donuts. The donut trays were not all full, but I'm not sure if people arrived when they opened at 7am. While we decided which donut to get with our coupons, one of the staff asked if we would like a fresh donut twists they were currently making in the back, on the house. We accepted the gesture, and the twists were definitely fresh, warm, and soft. We chose a Sugar Raised Donut and a Chocolate Frosted Raised Donut. I tried the Sugar Raised and noticed the dough was not sweet and it didn't have any taste to it. It was denser than the freshly made twists. For the Chocolate Frosted, the base was the same, and the chocolate frosting was the best part, super rich and creamy. Overall, the donuts are not what we like.

2.5/5 No line at 11:00AM on a Saturday. Pros: -Lots of delicious-looking pastries -Great service -Inexpensive Cons -Street parking -Cake donuts a bit dry -- $2.20 for 2 donuts Chocolate Frosted Cake Donut Plain cake donut with chocolate frosting. The cake donut is a bit dry, but the chocolate frosting is delicious. It's much thicker (like buttercream) than other chocolate donut frostings. However, it's not overly sweet. Plain Glazed Donut Glazed yeast donut. Very solid light and fluffy texture but I didn't love the taste of the dough/glaze. Other donut options: chocolate sprinkle, sugar-coated.

A staple of Providence's Italian community since 1938 it was early Friday morning that a stop was made at DeLuise Bakery, the original location in Cranston now with a satellite in Mount Pleasant that still doing things the same way they always have to the delight of locals from Tuesday through Sunday. Situated at 1251 Chalkstone Avenue adjacent a string of small businesses, each with their own designated parking though none were open at 7:00am, it was with a light rain falling that DeLuise was found empty, the smell of Yeast hanging in air and service exceedingly pleasant from a woman who not only seemed interested in making a sale but also teaching a history lesson. Different from other local Bakeries in terms of their offerings, scratch-made Doughnuts filling one whole case with others featuring a collection of Pies, Cakes and Ethnic Pastries, it was after being gifted a fluffy ring topped in Chocolate Frosting that eight additional items were purchased, the simple Glazed Doughnut clearly not from a mix given its base that eats something like Angel Food but with more thickness. Moving next to a pair of heartier Doughnuts, both the Old Fashioned and Twist offering a touch of tanginess by way of Sour Cream, fans of filled Doughnuts should not miss out on Bismarks heavily coated in Powdered Sugar and stuffed with housemade Raspberry Preserves, the cost about 1/4 that of Orwasher's in New York and the overall quality of both Dough and Fruit better. Not about to pass on some of the Italian offerings, but stopping along the way for a particularly tart Lemon Bar and oblong Danish with light lamination topped by a thin layer of Cream Cheese, suffice it to say that DeLuise's Zeppole does not suffer the sogginess of so many others despite being packed with Custard while their Sfogliatelle does not separate quite as cleanly as that of The Original Italian Bakery in Johnston, though it is still very good.

The snow made street parking a bit tricky, but thankfully there are a few parking spaces in the back of the building. Once inside, the bakery was lively and smelled absolutely delicious. There was a great selection of fresh artisan breads to choose from. I ended up with the durum loaf, which was perfect since I planned to make an olive oil dipping sauce. The bread was exactly what I hoped for crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, airy with a mix of large and small holes, and full of flavor. I also couldn't resist picking up two Valentine heart sugar cookies with jam because they were just too cute. The only minor downside was that the employee who helped me wasn't very smiley. Not rude at all, and my order was handled quickly, but it felt a bit different from the warm cafe vibe you might expect. Prices are higher than if you went to a mom and pop bakery but this was expected. Overall, a great stop for quality bread.
