I came here several years ago for best iced coffee RI. Their coffee was simple and basic but their baked goods are epic. I stopped in today despite all the snow in providence and numerous roadways nearby being blocked my plows and trucks. I have zero regrets! The obstacles were worth overcoming for their amazing rainbow cookies that I'm obsessed with. This bakery isn't fancy at all, but don't let that fool you. This bakery is so cute and tucked away in a little neighborhood in Providence. We were excited to come here because of the reviews. Once we entered the business, we were greeted by a young lady behind the counter. She gave us "I don't want to help you" kinda vibes. She had no words to say to us other than "hi" and the total amount we owed. Once we ordered, the girl was far more engaged with the gentleman that came in after us. I ordered a hotcoco and a few desserts. And the girl seemed really bothered when I inquired about the types of milks they offered. I ordered a hot coco with almond milk. When it was ready, the girl put my drink on the counter, gave us a face and walked away. I am giving this business four stars, because the desserts we ordered were very good. This wonderful Portuguese Bakery in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence has been a staple in the community for so many years. We lived down the street from Silver Star 25 years ago, and loved it then, and we now drive there because it's just that good. I highly recommend their sweet bread - so light, airy, and delicious! Their Portuguese rolls are also outstanding. However, the gold star goes to their Pasteis de Nata, Portuguese custard tarts with a flaky pastry shell and a rich creamy center. Silver Star offers some of the best Pasteis de Nata around at a very reasonable price. Also noteworthy is that you can buy cheese from the Azorean island of Sao Jorge here as well as Azorean butter. My family has been coming here for years for their Portuguese sweet bread, and I've been dying to try it. Up until recently, I couldn't eat gluten. Now that I can, I had the pleasure of trying it for the first time! I loved it! It was delicious, and the texture was like challah, which is a bread that is traditionally eaten during the Jewish holidays, but it tasted sweeter. It's great as a sandwich and as a snack in the car. I can definitely tell that this bread is what Silver Star Bakery is famous for. Next year when I head back to Provincetown with my family, I hope we can stop by Providence along the way because I would love to get more. From the very first moment I walked in I didn't feel welcomed. We began looking at the displays and there was only 2 or 3 things that caught my attention; a cannoli, bean tart and a triangle shaped pasterie, none of which were any good. We then ordered an espresso shot and an iced cappuccino which turned out worse than the food itself. My espresso shot was burned and full of coffee powder in the bottom, and the cappuccino was 95% cream, it was white. Overall I had a really bad experience here and probably won't go back. read more

What a pleasant surprise this unassuming corner bakery is. I went in just to see what they had and walked out with 7 pastry's, macrons and sweet bread. I have been back serval times since. Terrible service. Counter people didn't not give one care about customers. I ordered croissants and paid with exact change. The cashier told me she had to go in back to get my change. Reminded them I gave exact change. Still disappeared on the back to get "change". 5 or so minutes later someone else came out and waited on the persons behind me. started to realize everyone behind the counter were in filthy pajamas and totally out of it. Was super excited to try this place based on the reviews and because I love Portuguese egg tarts!!! So we went a bit out of our way so I could pick some up on our short trip in Rhode Island. The desserts were all great!! But the service was TERRIBLE. The girl was extremely rude. I was curious to ask about two desserts and all she said was... milk (for dessert made with milk) and bean (for the dessert made with beans). If there aren't labels to it, maybe it would be best to have a menu? I would love to know what are in desserts especially due to allergies. This review is based on my visit in February for the #BestDonutsRI competition.     We arrived around 10am on a Saturday. Parking is on the street, and we were able to park close by. There was a small line, but it moved quickly.   They have a selection of Portuguese sweets and breads, with other baked goods in the front case. The donut selection is on the back wall behind the staff. There was only a handful of choices available. We chose the Sugar Raised Donut and the Chocolate Sprinkled Raised Donut. The dough of these donuts are slightly sweetened. I liked my Sugar Raised Donut, but I wouldn't go out of the way for them (definitely with PVDonuts down the street). The boyfriend said the frosting on the chocolate frosting was okay.   Overall, the donuts were pretty average. read more

There's something about local bakeries that really hits the spot. Tucked away at the corner of Ives and Fremont, the simple bakery design makes you feel like you're in a classic neighborhood joint. The interior is pretty simple and the lines are typically long on the weekends, so I was excited to wait my turn and try out all they had to offer. For a bakery, the donuts (sugar and jelly) have a rich texture you'd expect to have from a properly baked bread and the decadent sweetness from sweets. Since they're a Portuguese bakery, the rolls and egg tart really had the crunchy exterior, moist and doughy interior that I was looking for. From the dysfunctional website to its shabby exterior Silver Star Bakery in Providence is not exactly a place built for business in 2018-2019, but from the moment guests enter the reason it survives becomes evident, a steady stream of Senior Citizens making their way in and kibitzing with clerks while picking up their daily Bread. Located in Fox Point for decades, the historically Portuguese part of town now a diverse mix of Italians and others inhabiting Colonial house, it was just past 8:15am that the store was found still with full shelves, the woman behind the counter stern-faced but pleasant with a big Brooklyn accent as she pretend-bickered with an elderly man about being closed on Christmas day and the one following. Catering to local tastes without forgetting the past, everything from Rainbow Cookies to Egg Custard Tarts baked on-site daily, it was after lengthy perusal that an order emerged, a total of eleven items featuring six varieties carefully boxed and taken home for just over 12 dollars. Likely the only Bakery in fifty miles offering the flavors of Portugal, a citrusy Sponge starting things off with great moisture and subtle sweetness while Pastéis de Nata were gently re-warmed in the oven, suffice it to say that Hong Kong's Dan Tat have nothing on their cousins here featuring a flaky shell, the inside still quivering just a bit and likely even better fresh at Silver Star's 5am opening. Moving next to a Zeppole, its Vanilla Custard thick but unfortunately beginning to give the exterior a soggy texture, it was a last minute choice that led to the addition of a Pop Over glazed like a Donut, the oversized Egg Bread featuring a great rise and an enormous central cavity while Rainbow Cookies in two varieties were predictably enjoyable and surprisingly the only ones found across seven local Bakeries...unless one wishes to count the monthly special at PVDonuts. read more

We've come in a few times, and enjoy this cute somewhat old school Portuguese bakery. Haven't had much other than the donuts - which are good, but not particularly special or notable, especially with PVDonuts just down the street - and the always reliable wine biscuits I've found on a table to the side of the counter area. It generally isn't busy when we've been in, but that apparently changes weekend mornings. By the afternoon, the cases can occasionally be nearly empty. This is, hands down, probably the best or waaaaay up there on the list of Portuguese bakeries in RI and surrounding MA. The owner is sweet, thoughtful, accommodating, and honest. The prices are reasonable and well worth the products. They more recently have started taking credit cards, so now I can really make some damage! Some of my faves: the sweetbread -- by far, the best in the area... you can't go wrong (tip: go on either Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday for out of the oven freshness); the cinnamon twist -- the best I've ever had, seriously... these folks know their way around a flaky pastry; the Portuguese pastries (queijadas) like nata, feijao, and leit... amazing; oh, and the empanadas and calzones... My kids got the mousse cake and mousse tart (I don't think it was a tart but a mini pie). Both of them really enjoyed both items. I have been past this bakery many times and never realized that it was a Portuguese style Bakery. The rolls and the Breads and the pastries looked so yummy that it was difficult to make a decision. We were looking for a bread to make French toast with for breakfast the next day and decided to buy a sweet bread. It was so heavy and so rich and so delicious. Their pastries we're outstanding and they were very careful about their service. We waited outside on the sidewalk until the person being served came out and then my friend and I went in to be served. They had very clear limits of two people at a time in the store. The signs were large and clear and easy to read and understand. Once inside I could see all of the precautions that were being taken for cleanliness.
