I loved this bakery!! Super small, quaint, and cozy in its own way. The lady who helped us was super nice! My friend and I got four pastries for ~$5: the must-try egg tart, a coconut pastry, an almond pastry (like marzipan) and a white bean pastry (doused with powdered sugar). I thought pricing was very reasonable for what we got. Egg tart held its ground against the original egg tarts from Pasteis de Belem in Lisbon (if memory serves me correctly I think this shop's version had a bit more custard on the inside than the original shop's). My favorites were the coconut and almond pastries. If I lived in the area I'd probably frequent the place. read more

The owner of this establishment, Pedro, is a landlord for the adjacent properties and has made several homophobic and mysoginistic remarks to his tenants. He has gone as far as to say that he does not like gay people, and would not have rented the apartment to my partner had he known my partner was gay. If that's not reason enough to dissuade you from doing business here, their bread is so-so and the pastéis de nata are gummy and soggy. Tucked away in a residential neighborhood is an Old Skool style bakery on a corner right across the street from a Tex Mex restaurant. It is picturesque in the way that nostalgia makes you think about suburban neighborhoods from early 80's movies and I have to say that Silver Star Bakery had my money before I even walked through the door. Silver Star Bakery reminded me of a lot of mom and pop bakeries in my area in New Jersey. There were glass cases with a variety of pastries and cookies inside. Behind the counter were several loaves of bread that looked absolutely gorgeous. I wound up trying a few items. The "leaf" butter cookies were very tasty and were just as good as any other I have ever had. I also had an egg tart that was sweet and savory at the same time. The staff at Silver Star was super nice and even though it was near closing time when I showed up they were happy to help me as I asked questions. Repeat after me...GLAZED POPOVERS! Those things are amazing! Can't wait to go back for more. Also, maybe even more impressive were the mini pecan pies. A bit of a crunch to the tops. I wholly have plans to order some to take home to South Carolina for the holidays. Taking pecan pies from the North to the South is saying a lot about their yumminess! Egg Tarts were also very good. Today I tried a warm Spinach Pie. The dough was a beautiful consistency, the warm spinach inside was SO tasty. I've been enjoying Rhode Island spinach pies since the 70's. This one was the tippy top best of all. Try these treats from Silver Star too! Malassadas (aka "doughboys") Almond Balls ... mmm, marzipan! Whole Grain loaves, including "Hobo Bread" (2 to 3 different whole grain doughs intertwined) Birthday Cake - especially Eduarda's Red Velvet Cake Honey Buns! bring them home and grill with butter - heaven! Portuguese bakery. We stopped by here recently after seeing it listed as one of RI top 10 bakeries. I don't think I would have ever come across it if I wasn't looking for it. It's on a side street and there is no parking lot. It is very small inside, but they seem to do a steady stream of business, as we had to wait our turn and there was people in line behind us. The thing I didn't like is there wasn't signs on anything, we weren't sure what anything was and we didn't want to hold up the line as only one person was working there. We decided on the custard cups, just because we knew what they were. They were very good and fresh. It appears they sell coffee at times, but didn't appear to have any the day we were there. If I lived nearby I would probably visit again, but there wasn't a large selection to pick from for me to make a special trip there again. read more

The worker seemed to have little knowledge on what ingredients were in the pastries. A member of our family has a gluten allergy, so this was disappointing. I can't fathom how this place is so cheap! Some of the best egg tarts I've had for $1.50 each? Dangerous! Although they are on the sweet side, the pastry is so flaky, and the caramelized spots on top help balance out the treacly custard. The sweet bread is unbeatable as well for about $5 for a loaf that will be bigger than your head! And don't get me started on the cream horns... Just use your judgment; there are some things in the pastry case that are probably better left behind. For example, the lemon squares look pretty artificial, and I had a traditional Portuguese bean tart that was very... well... bean-y. But overall, Silver Star has a huge selection of fresh, tasty sweets for super low prices. They also have a cute selection of tea and other non-perishable goods on the side of the shop. I've driven by this bakery so many times, but never really noticed it until this week after dark when the lights highlighted the pastry cases from the streets. This place offers so many local traditions like Portuguese biscuits to yummy mini cheesecakes. Prices are reasonable. Bar seats are available. Only one employee was working so the wait was a long time and she wasn't so friendly. Atmosphere is ok, I don't think I'd choose to sit and eat here, more a grab and go. My cookie was really good, I'm sure I'll be back if in the area again! read more

Fun, little Portuguese bakery.. I came here for a Florentine cookie and ended up buying 6 of them, and also a cookie. I would really recommend this place to anyone in the area. They had a ton of options, and also some good drink choices to have alongside your pastry. The service was just ok. I felt like when I walked in, and there was literally nobody else there, the lady seemed kind of annoyed that I didn't know what I wanted and when I asked what things were she gave me a look like "how do you not know what that it?" The last time I visited Silver Star, the only two items I was familiar with were the zeppoles and glazed popovers. My new favorite treat? Pastéis de Nata. I'm not usually a huge fan of things that are sweet and egg-y at the same time, but this tiny little pastry is mouthwateringly delicious and worth every cent. The custard is creamy and has a strong egg flavor but it is not overwhelmingly egg-y. The crust is flaky and crunchy -- the perfect texture even after being refrigerated for a bit. On top, the pastry is nicely blackened, making for a subtly burnt flavor that is not bitter at all. I truly can't get enough. They are now selling Pastéis de Nata at The Underground (a student-run coffee shop below the Campus Center of Brown University)... someone is going to have to stop me before I end up buying them all! I can't wait to return to campus so I can eat more of these delicious egg tarts and take a stab at another one of those glazed popovers. My mouth is watering, I must sign off now. read more

I have come here numerous times for pastries and sweet bread, but they also have cakes, bread, cookies, pizza strips and other goodies. I brought these pastries home to family parties where relatives are used to Italian pastries and these were a great hit! The egg custards are a safe bet for first timer with Portuguese pastry. And when I bring the sweet bread into work, everyone always asks where it is from because it's the best sweet bread they've had outside of Fall River. Definitely a solid option for Portuguese baked goods in the Providence area, it won't disappoint! read more

It's hard to walk inside - indeed, it's hard to even walk by the front! - without drooling at the sheer number of delectable goodies in the counter. The chocolate croissants and the strawberry cheesecake croissants are absolutely decadent, and the HUGE chocolate chip cookies are soooo moist and delicious. The many smaller cookies are great, as well, and then there are all those sensational cakes and pastries. Ugh...pardon me while I drool. This place is also a hidden gem from which to get great donuts in Providence. It's a shame they only are available from here on the weekends, but then again, that's good for many a diet. If you do come for the donuts, however, come early, because by mid-afternoon (especially with PVDonurs down the street), they are GONE! I want to give Silver Star five stars for their Portuguese sweet bread alone. This is the most amazing thing that humans have ever created. Its sweet, its airy, and just delicious. Alone, with a little butter, or as the base for french toast (seriously give it a try, you won't be disappointed) you really can't go wrong! I've never been terribly impressed with the other pastries that they serve, but I will keep coming back for the sweet bread for as long as this place is still standing. read more

On a walk through Wayland Square this weekend I figured I would pop my head into Silver Star Bakery. It's an unassuming little storefront so I hadn't gone in before, but I'm glad I finally did. Why? The loaf of multigrain bread I got here beats anything I'd find at the supermarket! Never have I been happier to forget to buy bread earlier this week. The multigrain bread is a nice, hearty, loaf that holds up well for sandwiches or toast. I kept it simple while I was there and only got the bread, but they also had beautiful looking Portuguese treats--everything from bubbly and crisp pasteis de nata to a mini orange cake (maybe some variant of bolo de laranja?) I'll be back soon for more bread, and to try some of their sweets! read more

Weekend donuts are amazing! This bakery has donuts, but only on the weekends. Normally you have to wait in a line that snakes around the whole (small) store. The donuts are worth the wait. Make sure you get there early. I arrived before 7:30am and there were only 3 of the sprinkled donuts left. They also have plain chocolate frosted, glazed, and granulated sugar. read more

I really wanted to love this place. Based on the reviews I decided to try this bakery yesterday. Everything looked delicious and the service was ok. However, every dessert was sub-par at best. Nothing was actually sweet. The mini apple tarts were completely dry with little to no filling and not sweet, the apricot cookies were dried out and the apricot filling could break your teeth, the rice pudding was gelatinous and also not sweet, and the napoleons only had filling in the middle layer, was dry, and also not sweet. I really just don't understand it. How was this place getting good reviews? It must've been an April fools joke or something because this was just terrible. read more

For the price, you really can't go wrong. I got four baked items--Portuguese sweet bread, a Malassada, a custard tart, and an eclair--for under $5. I'm used to paying $5 PER pastry at Mike's in the North End of Boston. Of all the baked goods, my favorite had to be the tart. It was sweet but not cloyingly so, and cradled in the most beautiful, buttery-flaky crust. The Malassada was basically a giant, chewy sugar donut, but it was strangely addictive. I'd love to try it fresh out of the oven. A small loaf of sweet bread (not to be confused with cooked thymus gland) would make for an excellent sandwich, but I was happy eating it on its own. The eclair was the only "meh" item of the bunch, so I think I'll stick with the Portuguese items from now on. The bakery was absolutely dead when I rolled in around 1pm on a Sunday, but the friendly woman at the front desk said the line for bread in the morning goes out the door. This is a wonderful little local bakery, their fresh bread is delicious. Their pastries to die for, from their indulgent and inexpensive chocolate nut brownies to their light, fluffy and remarkably delicious little strawberry napoleons they know how to do baked goods right. Although t's not much to look at (not that that matters, you can't eat there) the staff is extremely friendly and the prices can't be beat. Although Silver Star has been around longer than me (and not much has), I went to another long gone family bakery on Wickendon Street when I was young for "right from the oven" Portuguese sweet bread rolls and another place up on the (Federal) Hill for wine and pepper biscuits and a third for Italian bread. Well, I no longer live in Providence (now that it has turned nice) so when I come back to visit, it is so great to know "the other bakery" that I had not tried until a few years ago was just as good and is still running strong! This unassuming little shop is a great find! They make donuts fresh every Saturday and Sunday, and typically run out within a few hours. They have a full display of tasty treats (I'd estimate that they have roughly 30 different desserts), including pastries, bread, and more. The price is dirt cheap -- the few items I've purchased have all been in the $1.50 - $2.00 range. My favorite is the apple turnover. My god, just thinking about it now makes my mouth water and makes me hyper with remembrance of sugar overload. read more

Silver Stars Portuguese bakery is a family run bakery on Ives street. My favorite part of this particular bakery is waling past it late on summer nights when their staff is up making the bread for the day and the whole street is warm and smelling lovely. The aromas they create are not a lie, their bread is soft and buttery and tasty, and all the treats in their counter have been delightfully good, and very affordable. They will even do custom work, on the offhand chance that you need a bun for a ten pound burger that you're making for the fourth of july. Try walking in with a few bucks, picking out a few from the counter, and retiring to the little park down the street to eat them. I've always found that to make my mornings (or, lets be honest, early afternoons) full of smiles. read more

Tried to go to PVD Donuts and they were sold out. Ended up here to see what kind of birthday treats I could find that'd be as fun as birthday donuts. They had the cutest little birthday cake bites- I got a dozen for $6, a large sweet bread for $6 and a few little cookies for $4. They have a wide variety and they even had a sign for Portuguese soup but sadly didn't have any that day. I enjoyed it here and would definitely come back.
