Deet's often gets forgotten because of the other big name larger sized bbq joints in Toledo. Though not as large or splashy in decor or location, they do a really solid job on their food. Price wise, and quality wise, it's definitely a hit with me.
I visited the location in a weird shopping strip mall near a Meijer supermarket store. I've always found strip malls a little off putting, but the inside of Deet's tries to make it as smoke house friendly and quaint as possible. That being said, the few times I've ordered in the restaurant has always had a clean seating area and the staff from whom you order is always friendly. It's an order at the counter and pay and then wait for your food at the table kind of joint, complete with plastic trays.
You've got the option to go with a combo which includes a side and a drink at reasonable prices or to order a la carte if that pleases you. You can of course, add to your price on the combos by adding coleslaw to the top of your sandwich or a thick slice of bacon. I've done both, and though the bacon is good prefer it not on the pulled pork sandwich. The coleslaw on the other hand for me definitely completes their sandwiches with a nice sweet coolness to a savory or salty meat.
Price wise and taste wise a good deal is the Toledo Dog if you love hot dogs. It's just a great combination of flavors, textures, salty, sweet... well you get the idea. Whomever came up with this combination of meats and all the fun additives needs a pat on the back. An all beef hot dog with a thick slice of bacon, pulled pork, AND coleslaw with some bbq sauce. Even the bun is sweet and fresh. With all the toppings, it's a really large hot dog and a good meal.
The pulled pork is good and for the couple times I've gone to this quaint bbq I've never gotten anything dry, always nice moist meat. I like how you have the choice of a sweet sauce or a spicy sauce or my favorite, mixed. They will put it on your sandwich but there's also bottles at the table in case you need a little more.
The personal sampler is great if you want a lot of meat and are having trouble making up your mind. It's a pretty good size and I've always been able to take home leftovers.
My only couple wishes are that they turn the music down, get a fryer and make some impossibly amazing french fries, and add a little more green to the menu. Every time I'm there it's nice blues music but incredibly loud. For the small space they've got a lot of speakers and there really isn't anywhere to sit away from one. French fries just go hand in hand with bbq and I'd like to see their take on french fries. Also, green beans are just eh, I'd like to see fried pickles or even bbq brussels sprouts. After being there and eating so much meat it would be nice to balance it out a little bit.
One last thing, really good root beer on tap. Wait, two. The mac n' cheese is really really good. read more
