Strong 4...Before the recent game-changing opening of the seemingly instantly James Beard nominated Tourmaline a block away, this was pretty certainly the definitive best restaurant in Forest Hills, by a comfortable margin. While that may rank as a relatively mid-tier title by NYC standards, as the neighborhood restaurant average is sadly and shockingly low, especially considering its location in the literally center Queens, this is nonetheless a very special neighborhood treasure, befitting it's stalwart status at now over 30 years of age. Classic Italian American with some New American flourishes, the place stays consistent and honors its tradition while simultaneously managing to keep things fresh and staying up with the times. The pizzas are well-executed and make great use of the gorgeous wood burning oven, but for me it's almost impossible to order anything else but my go-to order, one of the house specialties the classic Cavatelli with broccoli raab and some particularly pungent hot Italian sausage. A modern day classic in the cannon, finding decent versions around the city is tougher than one might imagine, particularly in my experiences in this borough. The version here, served like the rest of the offerings in an extremely generous portion that usually yields some delicious leftovers to take home, is a strong contender for the best in the borough title. Also of particular note is the exemplary super-thin and savory chicken parm, served in the previous era in various forms including with spaghetti and broccoli, as well as with risotto, currently served smothered with a spicy vodka sauce and paired with rigatoni. I've only recently became aquatinted with the rich and unctuous dry-aged burger, served simply and unadorned save for American and sharp raw union, on a classic and proper sesame seed bun, it's a stealth under-the radar competitor for the best burger in the hood nod with previous title-holder Dirty-Pierres. The expansive, two-room space, an ideal setting for the many private events and family gatherings that regularly occur here is aptly bright and inviting with the aforementioned pizza oven serving as its centerpiece. I generally sit at the bar which offers ample opportunity to converse with the top-notch staff, just as genial and affable as you would hope to find in such a longtime neighborhood institution, as well as the fellow patrons, who are, more often then not, you guessed it, longtime local resident regulars. read more

This is a great place to go to for get togethers and catching up with friends/family. It's walking distance from many homes, and right off the Union Turnpike by Forest Park area. The ambiance is very chill and casual. I forgot to take pictures because I was so hungry and just wanted to dive in when the food came out. =D The Mac and cheese bites were crispy and delicious. I am so impressed with my experience at Dee's for my little one's birthday. We reserved half the restaurant for our party and the space was perfect for our event. The manager, Shane was responsive to our inquiries prior to the event and always available during the event. Our server, Dimitri was spectacular and also acted as our decor specialist. It was our first time setting up decorations for a child's birthday and he probably saw we were struggling based on our confused expressions. Dimitri not only provided amazing service but is also a comedian and had our guests laughing the entire time. Please do yourself a favor and request him as your server for your next event. Finally, the food was a hit. My husband and I have dined at Dee's a number of times before reserving the space. The food is consistently great and our guests agreed! We reserved the side of the restaurant with the bar and the cocktails were excellent. The drinks came quickly after ordering and it felt like having our own private bartender. Parking also wasn't an issue because there are plenty of public parking spots around the restaurant. The price for the space and food were reasonable. Dee's has done an amazing renovation since Covid! It's nice and bright which accentuates the hanging art (for sale). The old wood-fired brick pizza oven in front has been retired in place and is now just decorative and taking up space. I will miss leaning against the warm brick wall when waiting for a table in January. It has been replaced by a new ceramic dome oven from Italy in the back of the dining room. A memorable appetizer dish is the Fried Calamari, which are tender and lightly breaded, but the best part is instead of a traditional marinara sauce for dipping, Dee's gives you a spicy tomato coulis that goes really well with the calamari rings. A drawback is that they don't serve my favorite part of the squid, the tentacles. The pizzas are fresh made with a few specialties like the Forest Hills with burrata, prosciutto, arugula and drizzled with aged balsamic. Feel welcome to mix up your own topping combinations. The fresh baked crust is exceptional. The pasta dishes are great also and are pretty substantially sized, so that you won't go home hungry, but you might take home some leftovers. My favorite is the Cavatelli with Hot Sausage and Broccoli Rabe with fresh made pasta. The Penne a La Vodka and Rigatoni & Eggplant are really good as well. If you come for weekend brunch, specials like the Bull Burger will satisfy you with Applewood Smoked Bacon and a Fried Egg. There are also traditional brunch items like waffles and egg dishes. Came here on a Friday night, seated immediately. Modern decor, tables seem fairly closely packed, but seating is comfortable. Service is friendly, a little overworked, so may take some time for them to check in on you. Food is great. Pizza comes out quickly. The pizza has a nice crust, perfect crunch, with the gritty cornmeal coating on it. I'm ingredients are fresh. The tomatoes sauce could be a bit sweeter, a little too acidic for my taste. Very good overall. We were seated promptly & the staff was friendly & attentive. Service was excellent; our water bottle was immediately refreshed when empty & the appetizers & main were perfectly timed. The only menu available is by scanning a QR code, an unwelcome throwback to the COVID era. At this point there's nothing wrong with an available digital menu but there ought to be traditional menus as well. Sometimes it's just nice to put the phones away. House tequila was acceptable; they were out of Patron & while 1800 was available I'm not a fan. They were also out of Southern Comfort & didn't carry Honey Jack. (OK this is starting to sound like a review by an alcoholic, I'll get on to the food). The Truffle Delight pizza lived up to its name and was outstanding, as was the salmon burger special. The burger itself was great and generously sized. Unfortunately the fries while tasty, were soggy. The gnocchi & rosemary shrimp was excellent and very generously portioned. In fact every main dish we had or saw at other tables was quite large. The Almond Tiramisu is creative, unusual & tasty. The Tartufo was surprisingly average for a restaurant with otherwise very high quality food. This was our first visit here in a while. Came here last night for an impromptu dinner date with my hubs and so glad we did! I can't believe we've been living in Forest Hills for 9+ years and only tried Dee's for the first time now. We have been missing out! I guess I never bothered to check it out all these years because I'm a hardcore Nick's Pizza fan - but I would say that this place's pizza is different and not really a "compete" with Nick's. Plus they have a bunch of non pizza items on the menu! My husband got the pepperoni pizza and it was delicious- the crust was crunchy but also doughy and just perfect. I got the spaghetti and meatballs and it was GOOD. Also extremely generous portions! We also got the Caesar's salad which was a step up from the typical expectation - loved it! A year or so back, I was invited inside the kitchen of Austin Pizza - my review talked about the quality and proper cooking of the dough, more specifically, the oven - an oven of modest stature yet chock full of technology. So now I'm fixated on ovens - indoor, outdoor and knowing dinner was at Dee's Brick Oven Pizza - I steadied and readied myself as I entered with youthful excitement thinking about the oven. Dees first location - just across the street, a stones throw westward - it was the 90s friend frost on the window panes and brick oven pizza inside, it was new - some adored it, some preferred their standard pizza others remained indifferent, rightly or wrongly this was I. Dees was bustling busy this evening, as it usually is - so I wasn't able to sneak the peek I wanted - I missed viewing the oven - gosh I wanted to see it and the kneading, the pressing the flipping and the fire side slide of the dough to the inside. So - I didn't order the pizza, I needed the background information, I wanted my imagination to take the controls, but the seed was planted for a return. "Let's get a few starters" rebounding quickly from my non pizza new starting point - reading the digital menu on a hockey puck sized screen. Calamari Fritto ($17.00) wasn't the start I'd hoped for - kinda rubbery, more snouts than torsos, spicy aioli just doesn't do it for me with this dish, I'm all day with the marinara here. The Crab Cake ($18.00) A single - I assume wasn't born n bred in the waters of Maryland, no indication as such, yet made a big splash with a little help from our clean, neat, pressed and professional servers that swarmed on delivery and removal with absolutely perfect time intervals - all descriptions properly pronounced and verbalized thoroughly. I loved the unwavering shape of the crab cake I made my first incision, I prefer my crabby patties a bit more toasted brown - I loved the look of the thriving & luxurious arugula salad topping. My 6'6 and 305Lb dining partner and I continued, crushing the dishes with Cavatelli Broccoli Rabe Spicy Sausage ($27.00) up next and polished off in just minutes. Short dense pasta worked well with it's coconspirators of shocked deep green with rough texture changes and the finishing bite of spice was nice as we continued our eating journey. Chicken Milanese con Buratta - double 'R' single 'T'? ($25.00) nicely pounded, egg bath, flour and possibly a double presses panko breadcrumb baptism - the flavor was a bit plain but quite good, perfectly cooked golden brown had me thinking about the crab cake once again. I had thought a lemon zest might have provided a little nice little zip. The Burrata atop with it's slightly hardened outer casing and soft creamy cows milk inside was absolutely delightful. read more

I've been here twice now and both times I had a great experience! The pizza here is delicious and the portion sizes are just right. While I've had better pizza, I come here to get more of that "restaurant" feel as opposed to just going to a pizzeria. I've come here for a date and with family, so this place is great for both. I made reservations the two times I've come here, which wasn't needed (Wednesday and Saturday night) - but I'd still make it just in case. You can find them on OpenTable or make a reservation on their website. The service has been excellent and the last waitress I had was so lovely and very attentive to me and my family. My husband and I had our baby shower at Dee's today (October 2022) and we could not have been any happier and glad we chose Dee's to have our event. From the beginning to the end of the event, the whole staff, servers, seriously EVERYONE was so accommodating. Everything went so smoothly, it couldn't have been any more perfect than it was today. Olivia was SO GREAT and professional and kind and she was really simply so freaking great. Communicating with her was as easy can be. We communicated via email and she was responsive and to the point. We were able to bring in our decorations the night before the event which helped a lot and she even helped set up the tables with balloons that night. All the servers and staff at our baby shower was SUPER freaking attentive and great. They knew what they were doing- my husband and I really did not have to worry about anything. They were friendly and helped decorate and give their input on what they thought might work better, etc which was super helpful.
