My husband and I came here with our 2 dogs a few weeks ago while in town to go hiking. We saw online that they had a very large, pet-friendly beer garden, so we came here after a long day of hiking to relax with some beers. When we arrived, the parking lot was very full and we quickly realized that they had trivia going on inside. While working our way through the taproom to go outside, we had to walk past a table that is right next to the patio door. It had a big trivia group around it and they had a very reactive dog that lunged and tried to bite both of our dogs. Not a great start to our time there. Once we got outside, we realized we could sit anywhere because not one other person was outside. I stayed by a fire pit area with the dogs while my husband went inside to grab beers. He came back with our first round and we planned out some more places we wanted to go to in Charlottesville during our stay. Not once while we were there (for 2 hours or so) did a single staff member come out to check on us or offer to turn on the gas fire pit. My husband said that the woman at the bar the couple of times he went up there was friendly enough, but there were several other people on staff that didn't acknowledge him/us our whole visit. As it got closer to closing time, we noticed people leaving, but the parking lot seemed to stay full with the same amount of cars. I'm not sure if there is a car repair place nearby and they share parking or if 90% of the people inside decided to ride share home, but it made us think for a long time that a lot of people were still inside for trivia night. My husband went inside to close out and saw that only one other table was still there, so we packed up our stuff we brought for the dogs and went to head inside to leave after finishing the last of our beers. We took our empty glasses up to the bar and the last table inside had just left, so we were the last customers. The woman standing at the end of the bar completely ignored us, didn't thank us for coming in, and stayed on her phone the whole time. It was just super rude and only enhanced the overall unpleasant experience we had during our time there. The beers were good and they seemed like a popular spot for a trivia night, so maybe it's better to visit and stay inside, but we didn't have a good time and wouldn't come back if we are ever in town again. I did really like that they had a community area for fresh food for people in need. read more

A little bit off the beaten bath but such a great gem. They had some people outside drinking beers around a fire. Large inside, easy for groups. They don't sell food but I saw some people bring their own. Best perk is they allow dogs inside and outside. It was lovely to just chill with the pupper inside and have some breed in the fall weather. They also have board games and darts. read more

4/5 December 2024. We stopped here while visiting Charlottesville before Christmas in 2024. We arrived shortly after they opened and had a couple flights. The beer was good and varied in style. If you're looking for lighter low alcohol beers they have that. If you're looking for heavier options they have that too. The bartenders took good care of us and had some good recommendations. The atmosphere we relaxed and they had some regulars that filtered in as we were enjoy our flights. I really like this brewery. There is a lot of heart that went into the business and it shows. There is a section on the wall where you can "dead drop" beer(s) to a specific person or type of person (I.e. your buddy Mike, or a first responder, etc.). A fun idea. They have a big indoor space with plenty of seating, as well as a large outdoor space with tables, picnic tables, and a fire pit. The staff were friendly and the vibe was pleasant. It's 96 and scorching outside, where do you go? A brewery of course. We grabbed a late lunch and took it over to Decipher. Our pups are currently in training so we thought it was a good chance to multitask. I like quite a few of their beers and settled for the 151. It is a light, easy drinking Hefe. We were warned that this batch tasted a little different due to the power going out for a bit during the brew process. Let me tell you... I'll gladly make sure the power goes out everytime they brew this beer. A lot less clove and more bananas and bubble gum in this one. Big winner in my book! read more

I've been two times now. The staff are friendly enough, the space is huge and the beer is solid. I tried mostly the hoppy offerings and the barrel aged stouts. The hazy DIPA on tap was probably the best I've had in Charlottesville but the rest of the diverse draft list didn't live up to that particular offering. I'll revisit in the spring/summer when it's comfortable to be out in open air. read more

A little more off the beaten path for charlottesville breweries, but Decipher beer sure does the job. We happened to stop on our way home from the Wool Factory and were pleasantly surprised to see Decipher's extensive beer selection. They have a very open and airy indoors and outdoors area, which makes it an ideal location for socially distanced outings during COVID. Loved the beer- I adored the apricot gose and my boyfriend liked the double IPA (Formal Fallacy) and the 109 pale ale. We were sad that they had run out of the west coast IPA, must be as good as we imagine! They were brewing the beer on site while we were enjoying and the employees were very kind. Decipher is one of the newer local breweries in the area. A group of 4 veterans (3 Navy, 1 Air Force) own the brewery. They support local causes and often host events for organizations such as the SPCA. Today they were supporting the Girl Scouts by hosting a beer and cookie pairing. My favorite pairings included the Lemon-Ups with the Broken Logic IPA (because of the citrus hops) and the Samoas with the Scytale Stout. Outside of the pairing, my favorite Decipher Beer is the 80/-(shilling). It's an anytime beer with a sweet, caramel malt profile. Hopefully, our community will support this brewery as much as these folks support the community. read more

I am so happy that a local brewery is actually producing a pale ale. I am sick of of all the IPA's. The pale ale and the Scottish ale were excellent. These were the only two that we tried during our short visit. The atmosphere needs a little work but they've only been open for five months. Dropped by Decipher to check out the latest brewery in Charlottesville. They have followed the modern brewery formula to a T - located in an industrial park, they sectioned off a space of their brewing facility as a tasting room, with tables and chairs inside and out, a bar, board games, and a selection of about ten draft picks. No food except for prepackaged snacks. We received friendly service and were told about the owners military history - three sailors and one airman founded the place. We tried eight of the ten on tap and particularly liked the pale ale and 80 pence English lager - a unique brew that evoked pub culture from an earlier time. This is a great addition to the C'Ville brew scene and manages to provide something surprisingly unique given how many are in town. We'll be back. Beat Navy! read more

New brewery alert!!! This place opened up about 7 weeks ago. The owners were super duper friendly. They're all retired cryptologists (hence the name) from Denver and CA. They even give you fun puzzles to decipher which you bring back for prizes. The low down: My favorite thing is that dogs are allowed outside AND inside! My dog loved sniffing around in their huge green space. My other favorite thing is, obviously, the beer. I really liked their mango beer, Hefeweizen and 80- (amber/red ale). New Brewery in the Woolen Mills Neighborhood! We visited Decipher a week after it opened and I was blown away with the quality. I've been to most of the in town c'ville breweries shortly after they opened, this was the first one that was good on first taste. There are currently 6 on tap and a flight is 5 beers, add the extra beer and get a complete tasting. One thing that I like about the beer: It's not all super strong and it's not: ALL IPAs ALL THE TIME. They have a good variety of styles in the ABV range of 4.5-7, which is refreshing if you're looking to have more than one beer and not be stumbling out the door. They have board games and some lawn games, and a couple of menus from restaurants nearby that will deliver to the brewery. Space is kid friendly with room for the kids to run around outside. read more

They are located in a warehouse building with plenty of parking and a grassy area with Adirondack chairs in the back. Indoors has a long bar and plenty of tables. You'll find all the branches of service and veteran organizations flags hanging and fun music playing. We had the librarian, bourbon barrel scotch ale and bourbon barrel imperial stout. They were all amazing and the bourbon barrels pack a punch so they're only for the strong who can handle them! You can buy a beer for anyone anonymously including essential personal, veterans, military and first responders and it goes on the chalk board. As a C'Ville "blow-in" I was drawn to the Decipher story - four military intelligence veterans from California schooled through the Colorado brewery scene, who set up here with no local links. The beer and the range of styles in a world of a bazillion identikit IPAs is exceptional - you don't find Kentucky common ales, chili smoked porters and Scottish ales everywhere. The vibe is unpretentious and chill. But the staff and sense of community make it what it is; four of the five staff are owners, and the other is as dedicated and friendly as you could ever hope for. They're forever running community events, and are always willing to share a brew and shoot the s**t. Brilliant people, brilliant place, brilliant sense of community. read more

Excellent selection of styles on tap. Their West Coast IPA is outstanding. It used to be a fairly common style but has been pushed aside by the endless array of hazy juice-bomb styles(which in my book, are NOT IPAs) for the youngsters who were raised on juice boxes. I'm glad to see this brewery still embrace this classic beer style and do it so well. Just the right amount of malt sweetness and bitterness. Their Scottish Ale and Festbeir also nice. And the people behind the bar are also really nice folk. And excellent place to spend some down time and enjoy a few pints. read more

Yard work or brewery? Hmm... I made the right choice. Difficult(ish) to find off the street as you pass Champion's distribution center and instinctively want to turn in there (it's the next left). Large, open indoor brewery with a small area outside. 8 beers on tap - every one of them above average, some receiving high marks. Service was outstanding. Scott, one of the owners, was bar tending and he was genuinely interested in both what I thought of the beers as well as some of the best breweries in the state he needs to check out (he's from Denver and hasn't been in Virginia long). In the short term, there's a Marzen brewing and thoughts of a pumpkin beer (not a spiced pumpkin - using the real thing), as well as redoing the IPA and Pale to live up to their standards (though I enjoyed both just as they are). Long term - we'll see. They're pretty new, but if they keep up this quality they'll be quite popular for a long time. Worth taking the time to find, much more so than some of the other breweries in town. read more
