DeAngelo's is always a favorite staple in Bloomington when we are in the mood for Italian food and their New Orleans Cajun take on many dishes is a unique dinning experience in Bloomington. They don't seem to be too busy when we go in so getting a table during the weekend generally doesn't seem to be too big of an issue outside of game weekends and they usually take reservations as well if you are expecting a big crowd. The have something on the menu for everyone from Italian salads, to pizzas and calzones, plenty of pasta dishes, and several creole and cajun options as well. The staff is always fairly nice and attentive. We stopped by last weekend for dinner and were both craving the chicken parmesan which was perfectly on point that night with fresh, hot chicken breaded well, their always great pasta sauce, and plenty of cheese melted to perfection. Such amazing service! We love their food (if you haven't had the lemon Alfredo pasta you need to run there immediately) and have eaten there many times, always great! Our latest to go order was all amazing but the lettuce in our large salad was expired, and we had to pick out almost half the lettuce. I normally don't bother the restaurant about these things because I was in the restaurant industry for 9 years and do not complain or offer feedback like ever, but my husband paid for the meal and it was so much lettuce that was inedible I felt I should call for his behalf. The woman on the phone was insanely kind, sweet, and felt how uncomfortable I was letting them know about the tiny issue. She even made sure to ask about all the other items in the order (which were all AMAZING), saying she wanted to make sure "what they needed to improve upon." I only expected a half refund or full refund on the salad only, and we got a notification that they refunded our entire order!!!! It's a fine Italian place. We were served with garlic and fresh bread. I was going to go for their crawfish etouffee, but discovered it has sausage in it, and I don't do sausage. So I went for the shrimp and crawfish diavolo, which was good. This dish isn't really Cajun, but it's a good southern dish; the scale tipped in favor of the shrimp, which had been a few days off the boat, although certainly not bad. My dinner partner had tortellini with chicken, said to be very good. An offered half-price appetizer, their calamari, was excellent, and a generous portion for two (the large portion). It's a nice establishment, service was good, although it's not quite formal dining in the strict sense. All this said, it was a fine experience. They serve pizza as well, and we haven't tried it. I'm not otherwise compelled to go back. You won't have a bad experience here, just nothing truly stellar. It's inches away from four star, and a good foot away from a five star. I really, really wanted to love DeAngelo's. Tucked into a strip shopping center, the inside is quite cozy and well themed. What kept me from loving the place was the lack of interest of the staff and the average food. We arrived about an hour and a half from closing after being turned away from another nearby restaurant which had already closed their kitchen an hour before their posted closing time. I thought this might happen here when it took a while for anyone to greet us. We the. Had six staff members greet us and say someone would be by soon to seat us. It took a fair amount of time to be seated even though the restaurant only had three other tables occupied. We started with spicy meatballs, and they were spicy. I had the lasagna, which is usually a safe bet at an Italian place, even an Italian/Cajun place. It wasn't that good. The meat lacked flavor and the sauce was mediocre. The chicken Alfredo was also lacking in flavor. The pesto pasta was nothing to write home about, either. We wanted to try the beignet sticks, but we were informed the fryer had been turned off for the night. I understand trying to prepare for closing, but can you wait until a few minutes before rather than a half hour before?! Blown Wednesday night!! Tried again for a DeAngelo's dinner, no luck. Walked into the restaurant first thing they caught me was a damn carpet/dirty water smell. There was nobody at the door and after standing for a few minutes we were greeted by a server. First she asked how many, being the only ones in the doorway we say 2. We were told they only had two people and they would get to us in 10 minutes. It was a quick, NOPE this is crazy and we left. Why does it take 90 minutes to make a bowl of pasta with Parmesan sauce? No meat or anything. After receiving an estimated delivery time of 60-70 minutes, my delivery driver was waiting over 20 minutes past this. My food was not ready for them to pick up until 90 minutes after I ordered it at 3 pm -not even a busy time of day. Food was good but overpriced. In regards to the owners comment: not only could I see my delivery drivers location waiting at the place of business for 20 minutes they were actively texting me with updates every time they inquired about my order and it's hard for me to believe they would just waste their time sitting there texting me lying to me about the status of my food. read more

This place came highly recommended to me and I definitely was not disappointed! It is located in a larger strip mall so there is a generous amount of parking nearby. Stepping into the Resturant is like stepping into Italy. From the music they have playing to the decor it really makes you feel like you are in a little Italian kitchen. We wanted a decent amount of time before we were seated. It wasn't super busy but I only noticed one waitress who seemed to be taking care of everyone. Once we were seated we started browsing the menu. Way too many choices and I would've liked to try it all! We got our drinks pretty quickly along with some thinly sliced warm bread and some olive oil with roasted garlic cloves in it. It was a nice little starter and kept me satisfied until my meal came. We decided to get the fried calamari appetizer and it came out fresh hot and crispy. The batter had a bit of spice to it and the marinara to dip in was fantastic. I'm not usually a calamari girl but this was hands down the best I've ever had. Not long after we finished the appetizer our meal arrived. I had decided on the shrimp and crawfish diavolo and it was so flavorful and delicious. The cream sauce had a little spiciness that really completed the dish. There were nice sized pieces of crawfish along with the succulent shrimp. The pasta was cooked very well. Overall a very well balanced dish. My daughter decided to get the lemon chicken Alfredo and she said it was very good also. She is a huge beignet fan and so she wasn't going to be satisfied until we ordered the beignet sticks. It took a little while for those to come out and I personally was a little disappointed in them. They tasted like glorified funnel cakes to me. They were fresh and hot and drizzled with honey and dusted with powdered sugar. She chose the chocolate sauce to dip them in. They tasted good but certainly not like any beignet I've ever had! Overall this place would get 4 1/2 stars but since I can't do half's 4 stars will have to do. I look forward to coming here to eat again in the future! read more

My Fiancé and bonus son took me to dinner for a belated birthday because it fell on Tuesday. Thankfully they didn't embarrass me and say anything! Our waitress was so nice! They were busy and there was only 2 of them. Being a server myself in the past, I watched and never saw her stop for a second. She kept our waters and my fiancés tea filled without ever having to ask. There was an issue with my bonus sons pizza and before she even brought out the first pizza she explained there was an issue and that they had a second one already coming but was still gonna bring out the first. It honestly looked like they were busy and kinda tossed it in and the toppings and sauce flew off one half of it. The second one was perfect but the fact they caught it and corrected it before it was even brought to us was amazing! He's 14 so this was much appreciated as we already got a bigger size for him! My shrimp Alfredo was so good and I even could tell there was a slight Cajun spice to it but very subtle and so good. My fiancé had the sausage and tomato pasta and it was delish! My bonus son even said to give them 5 stars cuz he got 2 pizzas as I was filling this review out! My only complaint is the waiter was not very nice to the waitress. Let's start by saying we like the food overall. We started by exploring pizza and calzones by carry out for several weeks. Prepped well and tasty. The takeout salads are a tad skimpy because the dressing container takes up a large part of the space for salad. Then we decided on a valentines dine-in. Our server was attentive and kind. This place does seem to have an identity crisis. It's not sure if it's casual or upscale. I'd say they'd be better off embracing casual. The entrance is clearly take out oriented and the specials boards smack of casual too. Yet people were turned away for not having reservations as tables sat empty around us. There was a hostess or some such in a skin tight, very strange red floor length leftover prom dress. Sorry or be so harsh but it is worth mentioning. Perhaps another missed attempt at being upscale. As for food, we got the small calamari for $7 which was maybe 5 or 6 pieces. Tasty though. My husband had a Cajun offering and was happy enough to enjoy the whole thing. I had pesto pasta with shrimp. Heavy on the Parmesan. It was tasty but very rich. My only complaint on the dish was that it seemed it was a cost saver for them. Tons of pasta, skimpy on the shrimp. Also, it is supposed to have walnuts. Mine had exactly two itty bitty walnut pieces. The roasted garlic also listed was just one little nub in the whole dish. This was at the beginning of the evening so I'm hard pressed to say they ran out. I know this review sounds harsh but really I think this place could be a gem. We love this place for a nice dinner out that's not too expensive or to pick up a nice good meal when we don't want to cook! They are a locally owned authentic Italian restaurant with lots of options. They have two dining areas with tables and booths and a small bar section with some cocktail tables as well as bar seating. The food is always delicious and you can find options to fit your dietary needs. They also bring fresh bread and roasted garlic to your table while you wait!! Ask for extra garlic, you won't be disappointed :) I believe they offer delivery through a third party service but not directly. They offer beer and wine, we enjoy their Malbac, and offer buy one get one pizzas and calzones on Mondays! They are located in the large shopping center across the street from college mall. It's definitely a great place to go to enjoy a nice meal with family or friends. The staff is always nice and helpful, we have never had a bad experience! We had dinner at DeAngelo's on a Thursday night - the daily specials included 1/2 off appetizers and $4 specialty beers and $4 glasses of a selection of 4 different wines (I think). The menu is on the pricier side for Bloomington, but we were on a date and the portions are very generous. We ordered a half order of calamari - the breading was a little bland and calamari more on the rubbery side , the marinara sauce was a redeeming factor for the dish and the chopped red pepper with the calamari helped to add some flavor. My husband loves spinach artichoke dip and because appetizers were half price we ordered that too. It came out just as we finished up the calamari. This is a HUGE appetizer , very cheesy and tasty. The dip is surrounded by slices of warm cheese bread - think a whole pizza, sans sauce. That honestly could have been our meal. The spinach artichoke dip was tasty without being overly salty, everything was super cheesy...which didn't upset us at all! Unfortunately the pesto pasta I ordered was super cold when it came out (was I already stuffed from appetizers yes, so we just boxed and took the whole thing home, but still...it was very cold). My husband ordered the chicken parmesan, it was served at an appropriate temperature and very tasty. The pasta sauce is very chunky and rich. I did notice, like I read from some others, that the ratio of sauce to noodles was a little imbalanced but it didn't really bother use because the sauce was so tasty and maybe because we were stuffed from appetizers. We took a good portion of the chicken parmesan home as well. The atmosphere is casual if you are with a small group, ask for a booth. That will offer a little more privacy while dining. I am very happy with the experience I had at DeAngelo's. I was hesitant about going here because of some of the negative reviews, but found a Groupon and could get points on OpenTable so I figured I'd give it a shot. We were seated immediately upon entering the restaurant. The food was amazing and our waitress, Katie, was very attentive throughout our time there. I had the Homemade Meat Lasagna and it was amazing. I enjoyed how the meat in the lasagna was a little spicy and how it had so much flavor. My husband had the Meatball and Sausage Calzone and enjoyed it, as well. He didn't anticipate ricotta cheese being in it (which he doesn't like), but he said in the future that he'd just ask them to leave out the ricotta cheese. Small house salad was also very nice and fresh, and while I'm not a great fan of house balsamic, I am very much in favor of their version. I have been ordering pizza for carry-out from them for quite a while. Sometimes the order is ok, but my last three orders have been wrong . Because it's a drive to pick-up, and usually at nite when my husband has difficulty driving at night , or we're tired, i have just let it go and eaten them without calling or returning them. However , last night once again I got another mistake pizza. Just so happened that we were tired and hungry and tried to eat one. I didn't enjoy mine and I decided enough was enough so i went in with the pizza and explained the situation . the waiter was helpful enough but even though totally explained the problem he made me a plain cheese pizza with the extra fresh mozzarella instead of the firenza that i had ordered originally . I have been here twice. Once I got the Lemon Chicken, which is great but too lemony. I love lemon, but I thought the citrus was a bit over the top. This past Monday, we ordered the calzones for carry out. On Mondays they are BOGO free. It might be my new favorite deal in Bloomington. The calzones are HUGE and the ricotta in them is to die for. Make sure to get the marinara, they make it in house and it's the best! When ordering it to go, it only took about 30 minutes, but there were lots of people also there picking up food. Will start this as Birthday Gone Wrong! For my wife's birthday she chose DeAngelo's for a nice dinner. The waiter came, we ordered drinks and appetizer, so far so good. The waiter came and took our main course orders. My oldest daughter was with us and ordered a starter salad. Now a half hour post our appetizer I asked our waiter for my daughters starter salad. The waiter informed me he HAD NOT put in our order. He asked if my daughter still wanted her salad to which she said no. The waiter said to my wife he noticed it was her birthday could he offer her some free dessert with her meal. My wife said yes and away he went. A half hour later a piece of cheesecake showed up at our table but NO MEAL! I asked the waiter if my wife was to eat her cheesecake before her meal? The waiter said "I thought you did not want the meal", I said, you asked my daughter if she still wanted her salad to which she said no. I had no DAMN idea you would cancel our meal! To say this was a terrible birthday celebration for my wife is an understatement! To cap off not getting our meal the manager did not even take the time to come to our table and apologize. I get that mistakes are made but to the extent they fucked this up, I would have at minimum expected the manager to come to our table to apologize and do all she could to prevent me from writing this review or telling others how bad of an experience we had. Instead the manager walked by our table at least 10 times not ever looking in our direction and basically avoiding us. No way to run a business, it seems that the service, and the look of the place have declined. I cannot see myself or my family coming back to DeAngelo's even though we have been coming since coach opened the place so many years ago. I ordered delivery for dinner. I ordered the lemon chicken alfredo @ $18.90 per portion (no bread or salad included). The pasta and chicken were prepared well. A generous portion size, more than one meal for me. Pasta, obviously freshly made with that lovely chew, chicken light and crispy. The sauce was tasty but basically nonexistent. My guess is because they didn't gauge for the fresh pasta to suck up the sauce on the delivery ride. I also ordered a ceasar salad @ $6.70 × $1.00 for anchovies added. From a "high end" Italian restaurant, nothing to write home about. Romaine, a tiny spinkle of clearly not fresh parm & 4 croutons. That said, a decent meal. If I could give zero stars I would. The first time we went it was great. The last two times were horrible and we will never be back. My husband was frustrated because his dinner salad took 30 minutes and when he asked about it the "waitress" (who was training another waitress...so she learned how to mistreat customers) was super rude and defensive. My husband said "hey you could be nicer about it" and she said she didn't care. He said we were leaving and she said "Good! I don't care". Then she basically said her manager wouldn't care either. Last night was the last straw for me at DeAngelo's, which is a shame, because they do serve good Italian food. It's the service, every single time, that kills it for me, and it's why I'm not coming back. Last night, it took almost an hour and a half to get through two courses. The wait staff is slow and unresponsive, and the kitchen moves with no sense of urgency. Seated at the bar (the only place they could put us, despite a reservation), we got to talk to the general manager at length. We spent more than 20 minutes telling him how much the service brings down the quality of the dining experience. He agreed with every word we said, apologizing profusely that his hands were tied, and he couldn't make things better. The kicker--and the crowning reason we won't be back--is that after listening to our very valid concerns AND agreeing with them, the manager himself brought us the bill for the full, overpriced amount of dinner. By overpriced, I mean this: we ordered a 12-inch version of a pizza that comes in a 10-inch special for $10.99. But for the 12-inch, it was $23.50. We told the manager that the experience wasn't worth what we were being charged, and he begrudgingly took $11 off the $53 ticket--while arguing that we were only there for 45 minutes based on the server's input into the POS. Yeah, not quite. The owners of the restaurant, we were told, live in Chicago, and only come down about once a month. Shame on them. This isn't a rental condo. Get yourselves down here and fix your house. We'll be dining elsewhere. read more

I really wish I could give a better review. I love their food, but the service is not worth it. Today was the last straw: We went for lunch and waited about 10 minutes to have our order taken. We ordered off the lunch menu, but it took half an hour just to get our soup and salad. And then when the entrees finally arrived, my friend's salad was missing the shrimp she had ordered, so she had to wait a little longer. If this were an isolated incident I could forgive it. But too many times I've tried to order food or dine in and they've been closed for a private party, or open but only serving a limited menu because of a private party. I've only eaten here once, just a few hours ago in fact, but the poor quality of the experience drove me to almost immediately write a review of this place. I had wanted to try it for a while because it does relatively well on Yelp, they feature an interesting happy hour and some interesting specials, and I could really use some decent pizza in Bloomington. Seriously, what the hell kind of college town doesn't have a good pizza place? Being in one of the more run-down strip malls in Bloomington, sandwiched between a McAllister's and a Chinese buffet, does not help your initial impressions. The restaurant looks tiny from the outside, but actually pushes back pretty far and creates a surprisingly large and open space. There are tables, booths and even a bar. The atmosphere reminds me somewhat of Italian places in Chicagoland and on the East Coast, where there is an attempt to make a "special" restaurant, with a somewhat upscale atmosphere, but still remaining friendly, laid-back and casual. I've been to restaurants that do this well, and the experience can be very enjoyable. This place gets it wrong though. The ideas were there, but the execution is all wrong. It feels like it could be almost like a fast casual place, like McAllister's, but then there's this air of pretense, with servers in black uniforms, a somewhat fancy bar area. It's confusing. The menu features a lot of Italian items that you would expect, and tends toward the expensive side for Bloomington standards, usually running at $10. They were running a pizza special today though, so I got that. The lunch specials they do are not a good deal: for $2 more than a 10" pizza, you get an 8" pizza and a half side salad, which comes out to be pretty small. But then there's also, of all things, Louisiana-inspired dishes. "-inspired" because it's not anything someone from Louisiana would envision ever putting together. Me being from New Orleans originally, seeing shrimp, crawfish and three kinds of cheese in the same dish was, honestly, a little insulting. The pizza ended up being pretty bad. I like the sauce a lot and the crust is okay, but the cheese was awful. It's a blend, as most other pizza cheese is in Bloomington, but this one is particularly greasy and foul tasting. There was also way too much of it. I was starving but didn't finish the last piece because I was sure it would make me sick. The service was bad, but not terrible. So, for Bloomington standards, it was okay service: unfriendly, sparse and apathetic, but they got the food and water from point A to point B eventually. So here are the inexcusable things that occurred in our one meal aside from all of the other negative things I mention above: - My wife's salad featured one single slice of apple buried on the bottom. The salad was not supposed to have apples at all. It also featured a single block of cheese. It was supposed to come with cheese, but the description said nothing about it being rectangular. It's as if someone was just lazy in the prep. Strangely enough, it was supposed to be some sort of "Louisiana" salad. Again, a little insulting... - The bread basket had a napkin on top stained with pasta sauce. And it wasn't that the napkin had been washed and the sauce faintly visible: it was just sauce on the napkin. - The first pizza I was given was completely uneven, with one half black on the edges and the other half somewhat undercooked. I sent it back, which is something I never do. I mean, if you're comparing this place to the Olive Garden then, yeah, it doesn't look that bad, except for the service, of course (chains tend to have awful food but great service). But if you've ever had decent Italian food, even the more Americanized type, you will not be happy with this place at all. Needless to say, I will not be back, and I think I may have found, with this experience, the second worst restaurant in town, behind Basil Leaf, but I do still have more places to try. read more
