Great meal at DeAngelo's in Bloomington! We had the Spicy Meatballs, house salad, and the Florio pizza. Everything was delicious. The meatballs had a nice spicy kick and great flavor. After I got a fantastic takeout pizza from DeAngelo's in the fall, I ordered from them again to treat myself. This time I went with a classic margherita (this is apparently available online/for takeout only). I couldn't believe it was from the same place. The crust was tough and had too much flour, the sauce wasn't spread over the whole pizza, and I expected the roma tomato topping to be baked with the pizza instead of slices of raw tomato on top (maybe there are people who prefer it this way, but my preference is definitely for baked). The sauce was delicious but there just was not enough of it - with such simple toppings, a margherita should be heavy on the sauce. My walk home was about 10 minutes and the pizza had also cooled down significantly by then even though I picked it up just as it was ready, put it in an insulated bag, and stuck it in a warm oven as soon as I got home while I unpacked. This was not a problem I had last time. I was reluctant to microwave it, but after eating about half the pizza I realized it just needed to be warm, so I microwaved for about 15 seconds and that did make it significantly better but still not great. I got a seasonal cheesecake for dessert. The online order form just said "seasonal" but I decided to take my chances with it and got a turtle cheesecake. The cheesecake was good. The size was a nice individual portion after eating pizza, but it did seem like $8 was a little much. The service was again very friendly when I picked up, and my order was ready when they said it would be. Even though the service and cheesecake were on point, the pizza was supposed to be the main attraction, and I was so disappointed by it that I'd give this visit 2 stars. The overall 3-star rating is because I like to take an average when updating a rating after just the second visit. I would go back to see if this was a bad day or if the margherita is just not the way to go, but if I hadn't gotten that much better pizza in the fall, there's no way I would be back, at least for pizza, based on this visit. read more

After eating here recently, I genuinely don't know why I haven't been out here to eat more. This place is every bit as good as I remember. When I suggested it as a place to meet, one good point made was that because of the time it takes to get your food, it's a great place to go for conversation. You have time to chat while waiting for your food. It's really nice. They start you off with something to drink and bread with olive oil to nibble on. I got lucky. I snuck in on a Friday night without a reservation. I would definitely recommend reservations. This place filled up in a hurry! We started off with the cheese bread. I had the italian sausage and pepper pasta, and the person I was with had the lasagna, which I desperately wanted to have also! The food was fantastic all around, and to me, very reasonably priced. It was well presented, and tasted great. The server was very nice, and no one made us feel like we had to get up and leave as closing time approached. Very cool vibe, and most excellent food. We had La Caprese towers salad. It was a delicious appetizer. Very flavorful. And my husband had Lemon Chicken Penne pasta. Is was delicious. And I enjoyed mushroom fettuccine Alfredo. I used to go to d'Angelos often, many years ago. However, they appear to be chronically understaffed. I've been turned away or given an indefinitely long wait several times because they don't have enough servers, even when it doesn't look very busy. On the most recent trips we were one of several groups who tried to get a table and gave up and went elsewhere even though it looked pretty deserted inside. Um, consider hiring more servers if you want to stay in business? read more

I want Anthony Taylor, the owner, to be aware. I have been a regular patron at DeAngelos for 15 years. My last two dining experiences have been horrendous. I have not had a decent waiter or waitress since Jade left a year ago. The first bad experience I had, my order was incomplete after I had ordered spaghetti and meatballs. My order was sent to the kitchen, and the server didn't mention anything about being out of anything initially. Shorty after, I was informed that they were out of meatballs and still charged me full price. The last and most degrading experience I had, I came in, stopped at the "Please wait to be seated" sign, for about 10 minutes, no one came to seat me. The dining area was not even half full. So, I went over to the bar area to look at the weather that was on the television. A bartender asked me if I was going to be eating in the bar, I told him no and that I wanted to finish watching the weather. The bartender told me he would seat me. I did not go with him immediately, and I struck up a conversation with a couple at the bar. The bartender that told me I would be seated, never returned, so I left the bar area. I went to the dining area and sat down at an empty table, no one came to wait on me in 15 minutes. The next thing I know, an employee comes and asks me to leave. I left promptly without any argument. I will never be back. I do not recommend dining at DeAngelos. read more

This used to be a favorite, but it has degraded and after tonight, we won't be back. We ordered calamari for an appetizer and it was flavorless, tough and rubbery. Then I had the lasagna which was burnt on the top, so I sent it back only to have it returned to me and told that it was as it was supposed to be. I may not be a chef, but burnt lasagna is not what I wanted. Again, the two bites I had were mediocre at best. The other problem was the slow speed of our meals. It was abnormally long even after ordering an appetizer. Very disappointing! One other item of note is that the floors were slippery like they hadn't been fully cleaned in a while. Do not let the strip mall fool you, this place is a gem! I've been here for lunch through the week, dinner and weekends-always great! The Alfredo is superb! The interior looks and feels like an Italian restaurant, like you've stepped away from the hustle and bustle of the busy day into an oasis. We had an enjoyable meal here for Devour Bloomington. The restaurant is much larger and well decorated than I expected from the exterior. It also has a nice bar, but it was not manned on Saturday afternoon. It's in the lobby, which probably works well if there is a wait to get a table. We loved the bruschetta and hope it will become a regular menu item. The free bread with olive oil and roasted garlic was also lovely. I had the penne with tomato cream sauce and it was fine, but it could have had more sauce and more (or more finely chopped) sundried tomatoes. I had to cut them up enough to distribute them throughout the dish. The restaurant has an open kitchen and you walk past an open entryway to the kitchen on the way to the restroom. What was within my view was tidy and clean. You could hear the kitchen staff in a kind of white noise way, but nothing loud or distracting. A few areas of improvement: - Salt. My husband agreed with me that everything we had was woefully under-salted. - Ambiance. I agree with other reviewers that this place can't seem to decide if it is casual or fancy, which makes for a weird vibe. - Presentation. My pasta dish was literally all one color. The chicken was sliced into pieces roughly the size of the penne, no grill marks, and mixed into the sauce, so I initially thought the chicken was omitted. We were in town and decided to check this place out for Restaurant Week. It advertises itself as kind of an offbeat combination of Creole and Italian. I was expecting some kind of fusion of the 2 cuisines, but it's like there are 2 separate menus. I also think the Italian side is dominant. Let's say 60% Italian and 40% Creole. The (Italian) food is just OK. Just about everything needed more salt. All the sauces (white, red) were flat. Next time I'm in town, and I have a hankerin' for Italian (or Creole) I think I'll look elsewhere. read more

So I went to DeAngelo's, after reading a few posts about good experiences. It's been several years since I've been there. I stopped going to D'Angelo's because of three back-to-back bad experiences about six years ago. There were three people total in the entire restaurant. Another couple and myself. I asked for bread, but was told they were out. The calamari was tasty. My salad was just OK, as it lacked flavor. I waited for 10 minutes, hoping that the waiter would come back and refill my water and bring me my check, but alas, I had to flag him down. I understand when there's not that many people in the restaurant it's good to catch up with coworkers but also extremely important to make sure that the guests that are in the restaurant don't need a refill or anything for that matter. It's rather dark in D'Angelo's which I guess some would call ambience, but I found it a little bit depressing in the middle of the day. I'm glad other folks have had good experiences but after today, I don't think I will be dining there again. It's a great place if you you want to you want to go sit with some friends for a quiet conversation without being rushed out. read more

Our friends who are locals took us out of towners here for dinner one night. Jade was a great server very attentive. The best part of dinner was the artichoke and spinach dip appetizer. Enough for 4 to share and we could have made a meal out of it. But we didn't. Everyone had some kind of pasta dish. i've come here twice now, with such mixed results that i don't feel inclined to come back because i wouldn't risk another bad experience. we had a reservation for a party of 10 for a retirement party. there was one server who was doing his best, he was obviously new and just trying to get everything done. there was also one cook. for a saturday this was an odd staffing choice (i worked in a pizza/italian place for 6 years). it was apparent he had not been trained well, which again is not his fault. the first time i came i got the mushroom ravioli which was decent but was overpriced for the portion. today i got the margherita pizza and it was so disappointing. it was the first time i got cheese pizza with raw tomatoes on top and called margherita pizza. almost no one finished their dish and no one wanted to take their food home. i saw the owner say on other reviews they are currently understaffed (which in a college town is surprising) but i wouldn't go back until they were fully staffed again. read more

Wife enjoyed her Tuscan Salad, and my house salad was fresh and featured red leaf lettuce, and homemade Italian dressing. We took on the quest to find D'Angelo creole Italian restaurant and discovered it nestled nicely between DSW shoe warehouse and a nail spa store in College Town Mall. You can order take out but if that is your only way of knowing this restaurant you are missing out on the atmosphere and the decor. The server was delightful and quite helpful. We had warm French bread with olive oil and garlic. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer. we ordered the half order appetizer which was huge. I ordered the calzone and it was delicious. The garnish was slices of fresh tomatoes. My spouse ordered the shrimp fettuccine. We both took half of our main dishes home. For dessert we took part in the wedding cake. I now know why my parents like this restaurant so much. The location in a strip mall was surprising because once inside it feels very homey and pleasant. We had to wait a few minutes to get seated but they told us how long it would be. They were able to meet those expectations (or nearly). The wine list was nice. They had a special on wines that evening but we chose something different... and it was very helpful to get a taste beforehand! Thanks to our server, Nathan, for suggesting that. The appetizer, spinach & artichoke dip, just needed more ... it was so yummy I could have licked the plate. Everyone enjoyed their meals. My father always orders the same thing. It was my first time at this restaurant. I decided on the lemon chicken pasta. I think mine was the best tasting overall, but the lasagna was very good as well. The day we went, in early June, is after the college kids go home for the summer, and so many people were still getting extra unemployment benefits. That might be why they were short staffed. Such amazing service! We love their food (if you haven't had the lemon Alfredo pasta you need to run there immediately) and have eaten there many times, always great! Our latest to go order was all amazing but the lettuce in our large salad was expired, and we had to pick out almost half the lettuce. I normally don't bother the restaurant about these things because I was in the restaurant industry for 9 years and do not complain or offer feedback like ever, but my husband paid for the meal and it was so much lettuce that was inedible I felt I should call for his behalf. The woman on the phone was insanely kind, sweet, and felt how uncomfortable I was letting them know about the tiny issue. She even made sure to ask about all the other items in the order (which were all AMAZING), saying she wanted to make sure "what they needed to improve upon." I only expected a half refund or full refund on the salad only, and we got a notification that they refunded our entire order!!!! Above and beyond service, more than I ever expected, these are the type of local places we need to be flooding with service, please make sure you go and eat there asap! read more

DeAngelo's is always a favorite staple in Bloomington when we are in the mood for Italian food and their New Orleans Cajun take on many dishes is a unique dinning experience in Bloomington. They don't seem to be too busy when we go in so getting a table during the weekend generally doesn't seem to be too big of an issue outside of game weekends and they usually take reservations as well if you are expecting a big crowd. The have something on the menu for everyone from Italian salads, to pizzas and calzones, plenty of pasta dishes, and several creole and cajun options as well. The staff is always fairly nice and attentive. We stopped by last weekend for dinner and were both craving the chicken parmesan which was perfectly on point that night with fresh, hot chicken breaded well, their always great pasta sauce, and plenty of cheese melted to perfection. It did not disappoint! Their portions are always large and is a great dining spot when you're in the mood for Italian! read more

It's a fine Italian place. We were served with garlic and fresh bread. I was going to go for their crawfish etouffee, but discovered it has sausage in it, and I don't do sausage. So I went for the shrimp and crawfish diavolo, which was good. This dish isn't really Cajun, but it's a good southern dish; the scale tipped in favor of the shrimp, which had been a few days off the boat, although certainly not bad. My dinner partner had tortellini with chicken, said to be very good. An offered half-price appetizer, their calamari, was excellent, and a generous portion for two (the large portion). It's a nice establishment, service was good, although it's not quite formal dining in the strict sense. All this said, it was a fine experience. They serve pizza as well, and we haven't tried it. I'm not otherwise compelled to go back. You won't have a bad experience here, just nothing truly stellar. It's inches away from four star, and a good foot away from a five star. I really, really wanted to love DeAngelo's. Tucked into a strip shopping center, the inside is quite cozy and well themed. What kept me from loving the place was the lack of interest of the staff and the average food. We arrived about an hour and a half from closing after being turned away from another nearby restaurant which had already closed their kitchen an hour before their posted closing time. I thought this might happen here when it took a while for anyone to greet us. We the. Had six staff members greet us and say someone would be by soon to seat us. It took a fair amount of time to be seated even though the restaurant only had three other tables occupied. We started with spicy meatballs, and they were spicy. I had the lasagna, which is usually a safe bet at an Italian place, even an Italian/Cajun place. It wasn't that good. The meat lacked flavor and the sauce was mediocre. The chicken Alfredo was also lacking in flavor. The pesto pasta was nothing to write home about, either. We wanted to try the beignet sticks, but we were informed the fryer had been turned off for the night. I understand trying to prepare for closing, but can you wait until a few minutes before rather than a half hour before?! Seems the restaurant business in Bloomington is so good they can close up way before closing time. read more
