Worst service ever! Air conditioning doesn't work in most of their buses. We complained to the regional manager and he was not at all apologetic about it and instead told us since it's too hot in July, ACs are not enough to beat the heat!! Most of the drivers told us up front that ACs don't work at all! Customer service sucks big time!! WASTE OF MONEY!!!! read more

I would not recommend this tour, we took it Saturday 6/29/18, it took forever to get on the bus, this driver on lunch, this driver was on a break, finally after getting on the A.C. was broke on the hottest day of the summer so far, I had my Mom with me she is 86 years old I gave it to her as a birthday gift, how embarrassing for me. The tour went back and forth over the same places, the bus was packed and they kept stopping letting more people on, the drive would start closing the door pulling away while more people were getting on and off, very stressful! I wasted an afternoon on this tour and was told no refunds well too bad for you cause I will be on social media. read more

Service was terrible. Waited at stops for 45 minutes to an hour for bus. One bus had no air conditioning and was hot and stuffy. Had to call service multiple times to find out why no bus coming by. On one occasion they stated the stop was closed but yet no indication of that on the map DC Trails provided to us. Received multiple different reasons or excuses. Book with Old Town Trolley, saw those everywhere and at one stop there were two there to provide timely service to their customers. read more

This is the worst tour I have ever done. The bus broke down and we sat on It for 40 minutes before they sent a new bus. Then we sat on that bus for 30 minutes before we left. Do Not take this tour! Save your money. read more

What a disaster this company is.. We got a Groupon for 4th of July weekend. Saw it was a great deal and thought we would give it a go. Apparently so did a quarter of the population of the country! If you get on from the very beginning point and stay on, that's fine you're set and have a seat and see all the sites but- it's a hop on/hop off your so the idea is you HOP ON HOP OFF. But be warned--- if you hop off and attempt to wait for another bus to show up and STOP and accept passengers, good luck!! We had this happen 3 times we waited and waited and they would show up and the guy would get off and say "sorry we can't take you there's another bus coming." These buses were ridiculously over crowded and they say they are air conditioned?! I beg to differ!! If you can get on a bus, it's a drainer. They allow far to many people on these buses and they don't have the equipment to cater for everyone. You will no doubt have to stand with the rest of the people jammed into the confined space like sardines. I'm not sure if it's because it's summer time it's busier and quieter in the cooler months but these guys need to do something about it. Better off sucking it up and walking everywhere. read more

If you want to spend most of your tour time waiting for the bus, this is the company for you. They simply don't have enough buses to make it easy to hop on and off. You wait at least 30 minutes every time. Employees friendly & knowledgable but Tamara talked way too fast and with so much inflection, one could hardly understand her. read more

Horrible! Not as promised. We were supposed to be in an open topped double decker bus. After being picked up by one coach bus, we were delivered to another bus in the boonies of L'Enfant Plaza. Upon arrival, the bus was not an opened top bus. They alleged that because it was supposed to rain...which it was not. Forecast all day was no rain. My family was really looking forward to the open top. Ended up being stuck with this closed bus. Unable to take pictures while on the bus as we had dirty and tinted windows. Would not recommend under any circumstances. read more

The first day we were pleasantly surprised by Teresa our tour guide. She was nice, respectful, and knowledgable. It was a different tour guide this time an older gentleman. All of a sudden over the loudspeaker we here "if you all will be quiet I can finish my tour until then I'll wait."   This man continue to shush people and treat people as though they were children. Then all of a sudden a tree branch smacked one of the passengers in the face hard enough to break a pair of prescription glasses. The young man was in severe pain he was crying and he was bent over holding his face. When this was mentioned to the tour guide asking him for help the tour guide stated "that's not my problem deal with it when you get back to the platform with the supervisor."  At that point a Hispanic woman came up the stairs to the top of the bus with a piece of paper ask the young man to put down his phone number and name and sign the paper. This young woman then said I have to take a picture of your injury. When the young man removed his hand for her picture she said "I don't see nothing on your face." The night tour was supposed to go from 7 to 10:30. However on our bus the bus tour guide started off as being really good he was funny, nice, and seemed knowledgeable. His name was Mike. As the tour went on Mike became  overly verbose, adding his own opinion into historical facts, discuss his thoughts and his religion on all of the different sites that we saw. Mike also decided that it was a good idea to discuss his political views on the tour. He became overly chummy with the Australian tourists right after I overheard them saying we should probably give him a $10 tip and then another one said maybe more. I was okay with this until it became 11 o'clock and we were still out on the tour. When we took off down the road the bus driver was talking on her cell phone and then texting on her cell phone while she was driving a bus full of tourists through the city. Then I hear the bus driver say to Mike I have no idea where I'm going. We did not return to the plaza until 11:35 p.m. which for those taking the metro met that they had about 15 minutes to get down to the metro station and get on their last Metro ride because the metro stops running at midnight. Each tour guide that we had had  a different interpretation of historical fact for each building and site that we passed. The next day we were on a bus and there was a small conversation going on about where people would be getting off the bus and where they would be going on to the next site. A different tour guide said " would you let me give my tour." Ovwr the loud speaker.  At this point I once again made a phone call to DC trails to just tell them that it's not only one of their tour guides That is rude and disrespectful. When I told the supervisor that I couldn't even hear the conversation that was going on behind me so I don't know how the tour guide felt it was disrespectful, he said that anything that said it can be heard throughout the entire bus. He continued to argue with me and treat me very rudely on the phone as a customer. I  asked for his supervisor, which he denied having. As soon as I hung up the phone with a supervisor a group of Chinese tourists got on the bus this group of tourists were speaking very loudly in Chinese the entire time on the bus. Not a single word was said to them by the bus driver the tour guide or anybody. The next stop some Hispanic tourist got on the bus they were speaking loudly and in Spanish nobody said a word to them. I called DC trails to let them know that this is the type of environment that's going on there buses and then I feel that it was racist the supervisor assured me that his driver nor his tour guide were racist in any way and I asked him to that explain to me why nobody other than Caucasians speaking English have been redirected in any way for speaking while on the bus. He had no answer to that question. We got on the bus again and this time we had driver Tyrone and tour guide Henry. These two were the best employees of DC trails that I met or dealt with in the two days. Tyrone was pleasant, polite, respectful, and concerned for his passengers.  He drove carefully and followed the rules of the road and seemed to know where he was going. Henry was pleasant, polite, respectful, and very knowledgeable. Henry was funny but not to a point of being annoying. He made sure that everyone knew where they were going what they could do at that stop. He also informs you where you could catch the next bus and approximately what time it would be. read more

All the employees were super awesome and way helpful to my slow and needy grandmother. She doesn't know how to work her cell phone so they made an exception and wrote her out a ticket to carry around and they didn't even complain about it. Their tours were very informative and I learned a lot. They answered all my questions even if they were stupid. Me, my mother and my grandmother were all laughing the whole time. Henry made it really fun. I would recommend them to anyone. It's fun for all ages! read more

This tour both day and night is amazing!! I highly recommend it and loved the guide Britney and her drivers. So much information and wonderful to everyone. ONLY reason I did not give 5 stars is because 1 day a tour guide (Devon I think) gave the whole tour with information about numbers and basketball. No interest in any of that info. He could have studied about the buildings and sights we were seeing instead. Nice bus. Great stops and not crowded. I will definitely be back read more

We were not at all impressed with this company. I don't think we encountered one single employee that was friendly or even cared to help direct us. The absolute worst one was the guy at the outdoor kiosk on L'Enfant plaza where we went to validate our Groupon for our tickets . He barely looked up at me when I was asking questions and when he did answer he mumbled so badly I have no idea what he was trying to say! Save your money and try a different company! read more

Enjoyed the Twilight Tour with Brittany immensely. She is a treasure, is well informed, and so very personable and willing to answer questions and discuss things further. The day Hop on Hop Off is hit or miss. The stops are not always marked, so I missed a bus which came on another corner, and when I hoped I had found another site, which is guesswork, the app would not load on my phone so I used the Map, I stood for another 30 plus minutes and finally took the Metro home. Appreciate the air conditioning. Initial Tour Guide on the day run was very unpleasant, and treated customers poorly with his attitude, and I am being kind. He was going through the motions only. Fortunately, you can hop off and get the next bus. When I raised my hand to ask a question, it took him forever to see me and I was in the third row. I asked if the pick up sites had signs, and his response was, "some of them," and went on with his spiel. As it turned out, he was guiding one of the Twilight Tours, and since I would not be willing to put up with him for any amount of time, much less for hours, I got on the other bus, and thankfully got Brittany. She is the saving grace for this company, because that other guy could put this place out of business. I plan to use them again, and ask for my preferred Tour Guide for the Twilight Tour. read more

While in DC we booked D.C.Trails Hop on Hop off tour to get around and explore the city. Booking was easy. The staff was friendly. The tour guides were knowledgable of the city. We had a great experience. I would highly recommend them to anyone. read more

I would not recommend. Wife and 3 young kids on tour on 7/15. We got off at stop 21 for the wharf for lunch. Busses were bunched together and ended up waiting 90 min to be picked up. Bus 406 finally arrived no room on roof and had to sit below with no A/C. Was very hot. Bus travelled 1 stop where we were told to get off and get on a new bus. This bus was not leaving for 20 min and we needed to return to hotel. DC tours advised to take public bus back - was disappointing since had paid for the tour bus. We did not see public bus so ended up walking .7 miles with 3 kids to get back to hotel. We wasted over 2 hours between waiting for bus and delays sitting on bus. read more

We wasted a lot of time waiting for the bus, it didn't come on time or even close. 2/3 of the tour guides were great, but the first just kept repeating himself and told very dated jokes. I could tell the other bus tours had more buses running, the people were able to hop on and off and get to see more sights. One of the drivers was questionable. read more

I had to give 1 star in order to add this review, but it should be 0 stars. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY! The buses don't stop when they make eye contact with you as you are running across the street and see that you need on the bus. There's are NO signs ANYWHERE! They tell you to stand one place to catch a shuttle, the shuttle pulls up on another side of the street and you have to run to get to the shuttle, only to see that it is full. They tell you one will be back in 15 minutes...LIES! You call to tell them the problem, and they don't care. There are too many other company with this same idea, go with another company because this one does not care about their customers! Take Big Bus Tours! Their bus ratio is about 5:1 for this company! The Night Tour driver decided not to show and they told us we had to get off the bus and split up my family to squeeze us on other buses. When I told the employee I was unhappy, she simply said call the supervisor, but the phone was busy or would not even ring. This company is a joke. The buses are dirty, old, and the air conditioners don't work. Look for another company! read more

They told me to use the app so I can track where the buses were. At 4:15 I waited 45 minutes and still no bus. I gave up and took an Uber. The app stopped working after 420 because I guess all the buses were heading home. I called them three times and I kept saying the bus was coming another 15 minutes another 15 minutes. Buses only come every half hour if you can find where the stop is. There is no sign on 21st and constitution so I had to call to find out where to stand. You're better off going with a company that has buses running every 10 to 15 minutes. They seem limited on the number of stops around the city. I had to take Uber three times rather than try to rely on them. Then I booked the night tour and I could only go Saturday night but because of an all day protest, buses are not running. read more

Just had a terrible tour with this group. First, it was 98 degrees outside and the interior of the bus was not airconditioned. It was just as hot as the unenclosed top part of the bus. Second, the driver, Miss Ruth, had no idea where she was going and missed stops. She had to backtrack to get to the correct stop. Third, we waited in the rain for more than 1/2 hour for the bus to pick us up at the Lincoln Memorial. Stay away from this company. They are terrible. read more

From the very beginning I asked them to wait 2 minutes while my husband was on his way back from the car getting my toddler son toy out the car we forgot as he was walking up they pulled off with some of my family still on the bus then told us to go to stop 5 and pointed down the street and that the bus would meet us at stop five. Stop five was actual down the street and a walk distance away which me and my husband had to walk to. We got off at a stop and had to wait over an hour and twenty minutes for the next bus to come. There were also two woman waiting and they took an Uber back to their car and didn't even finish the tour. I am highly disappointed in this tour and wouldn't recommend this for people. It was not worth the groupon discount. read more

Not a "tour" bus. Not even a hop on hop off your bus. A total waste of money and time. We waited at our stop "conveniently" located at our hotel for 45 min. All the while watching the buses on their app. Hmmm? No buses coming up our way. I called and spoke to their main office inquiring where the buses are ne was put on hold to see if there were street closures causing us to have no service. All the while we had seen 4 big bus tour busses pass us. The worker came back on the phone and informed me that this stop is not operational until after 1pm. Making the whole hop on hop off convince mute. We called a lyft and realized we could see all the monuments and museums for HALF the price of a ticket for one adult on this tour. Don't waste your money. Use the metro, uber or lyft instead. read more

Our family of 4 loved seeing the monuments at night but I would not recommend D.C. Trails. The tour is incredibly long - almost 4.5 hours, which was an hour longer than advertised. We were picked up in a bus at our hotel at 6:40 p.m. and then spent the next 45 minutes driving around to other hotels to pick up other passengers (sometimes more than once when the passengers were late). Once all the passengers were picked up, they took us to a rendezvous point, where we were boarded onto a different bus. The bus was dirty, with the last tour's trash on the seats and in the seat pockets. After we boarded the bus, the driver told us we needed to keep the same seats the whole tour. So the people who boarded first got the best seats at the front of the bus with the full glass windows. This was true even after we would get off at the various stops - when we tried to take different seats, the bus driver told us we needed to return to our original seats. Of course, the people sitting in the "premium" seats were perfectly happy with the rule and refused to trade. The stops are long and, invariably, someone would show up late so there's lots of waiting. We did not get back to our hotel until almost 11. The monuments themeselves were beautiful at night so definitely take the time to view them after dark. But I would not recommend D.C. Trails. read more

Very few buses and long wait time between stops. Also did not like the enclosed windowed bus that u could hardly take pictures

The tour guides are absolutely not engaged with the customer journey. I had a group of college roommates celebrating our 26 year anniversary and I was excited to show them my city. True embarrassment from the get go. First off, we boarded the 12:45pm bus and encountered no salutation from the staff, we walked past our tour guide who was eating fruit, not smiling, rude and negative. Nothing got better with "Dre" and the next tour guide. The history commentary was one long run on sentence, containing no inflection, poor timing, cadence, participation and passion. Just a guy talking into a microphone mumbling a bunch of dates and historical facts as if they were memorized and recited. Zero participation with the customers, zero connection with the city, it was truly disappointing. Bus was crowded, hot, disorganized and a true let down. Terrible tour, choose something else! Too much competition to spend your money here. At minimum, if you can't hire better people to enhance the experience..invest money in a better audio system, or play a clear sounding pre-taped version of the facts with music to replace the robot. read more

Sitting at the Capitol right now, first stop I got off on. I was across the street going to the pickup location and the hust stopped for SIXTY SECONDS before leaving, passing right by me and they clearly saw me waving. I'm very angry and will never do another tour through this company, and I'll be in D.C. for 3 months with plenty of visitors. read more

This would have been a 5-star rating because the whole concept of self- guided tours and going at your own pace is fantastic. DC Trails boasts shuttle pick-up EVERY half hour and an app you can download to track location. While the concept, and the drivers telling me at every stop that "have no fear a shuttle will come every 30 minutes to pick you up," it could not be further from the truth. As I sit at Stop#15 the FDR Memorial, a shuttle has not been here for over an hour and a half. When customer service finally answered the phone, they could not provide a reason for the tardiness nor indicate where exactly the next shuttle was located. They must have been looking at the same terrible app I was looking at which showed the next shuttle not arriving for ANOTHER 55 MINUTES. Thank God it is beautiful weather today and we are not in unbearable weather conditions. However, the point is this company made a mistake somewhere along the way obviously and is not working to rectify it. I was offered no refund (I will be calling again now that it has been over 2 hours and demand my money back) and nothing more than a reiteration of the timeframe the app gave. Never again will I waste my money and more importantly my time with this company. As a side note, there are 4 other passengers here with me and they will be demanding refunds, as well. read more

My family came in from out of town. I researched all the tours in DC. DC Trails Guided tour keep popping up as one of the best.) I wanted a guided tour for my 83 year old grandmother, so we can a place to stay seated if she wants, its hard for her move around. When we showed up we we're told that the guided was cancelled. They still charged us. Apparently they don't have guided tours on the weekend during non peak seasons. I checked the website and nothing talks about the tour being cancelled. I received multiple emails about reminding me of my tour. When talking to the staff very nonchalant about the whole situation. Stating "oh we thought someone had changed the website, I don't know what going on with that." This was just an horrible experience. And it ruined the whole DC experience for my family. They thought if this was a true presentation of the city, that they don't care about its on it's non peak season they won't ever come back. read more

This was a terrible tour. They claim there is a 30 min. wait at hop-on- hop-off stops, but our wait at our first hop-off stop was an hour, and even then, a bus never came. After finally getting through to a company representative on the phone, we had to walk to another stop to wait for another 30 min. We then rode for just a couple of stops to end at stop #1 (L'EnfantPlaza) where we had to wait, yet again, for over 30 min. for the bus to start again. We waited a total of 2 hours, seeing nothing. Obviously, walking would have been better. Due to our own time restrictions, we never made it to our destinations of the WWII Memorial and Lincoln Memorial. In fairness, the night Twilight Tour, with Dion as our guide, was excellent. We got there early and did get a seat. But the weather was below freezing so later arrivals had to sit upstairs (the company did not bring the bus with the enclosed upstairs) or stand for the 3-hour+ tour. This company obviously has problems. Don't gamble with your money or vacation time. read more

Worst experience ever on a hop on/off bus. I have purchased these in several cities and found them interesting and a reliable way of getting around new areas. Having out of town company, I figured I would purchase this Groupon to show them DC. The company said that each bus would be by within a 30 minute window to pick you up. This could not have been farther from the truth. Waited 45 minutes at a few stops today. Also, tour operator wanted to crack more jokes than educate us on the city. Waste of money- instead should have gone with Big bus or Old Trolley co- since both companies ran very frequently. If you want reliability, do not go with this company! read more

I purchased my tickets online, for the hop on hop off tour. Unbeknownst to us that this tour isn't even running, I received a a call in the morning asking if I was gonna be at the pick up point. I said I was running late, they told me no problem pick your tickets up at the holiday inn gift shop. I get to the gift shop and am told to wait in front of the holiday inn, I already had printed out my e ticket, I call and speak to the operator and she says to wait in front of the air and space museum. I go to the air and space museum and see 6/7 big bus tour busses driving by and to no avail no dc trails tour bus! After an hour of waiting, I call the company and am told that there is no hop on/ hop off tour, and that I was supposed to pick up a big bus tour ticket style gift shop! I go back to the gift shop and the attendant has no idea what I'm talking about. Basically this was a waste of time, you might as well look for a different sightseeing tour. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

Oh, this was bad! They dropped us off at their designated spot near the Washington memorial, but when we were waiting for the next bus, the new bus stopped at a different spot and didn't even go down Madison Ave.. I called and they said another bus was 10-15 minutes away. After 25 minutes I called and 2 different agents said "stay where you are, you are in the right spot". It turned out to be 40 min And the next bus passed the spot and DROVE OFF TOO !!! What???? They apologized a lot, but when I asked for a manager, they put me on hold for 10 minutes so I hung up and called back. I asked for a manger and this time I got Ashley who was very dismissive, said the other agents were wrong and wasn't even a manger. They told us buses run by every 20-:30 minutes, but it was 40 min each time. However, if you call and ask how long till the next bus, it was always "10-15 min away". Soooooo frustrating!!! While we were waiting, we saw 10 "big bus" and "D.C. Trolly" buses go by. There is a reason D.C. Trails is cheaper. Awful! read more

I decided to do the DC trails because I got 50% off the price of $24. I figured for $12 I can't complain even if the tour wasn't good. I truly had a wonderful experience on the tour. I gave it a four star because some of the buses was extremely cold and had no heat on the bus. I guess I had great timing because I did not have to wait more than 10 minutes for the next bus. Plus the app really help me with tracking the bus. Now the app only gives an estimated time and not the exact time the bus will be there. What I did was got to the bus stop 5 minutes before the earliest estimated time. I did not have any issues locating the bus stop because the signs are clearly marked with DC trails and if you can't see them all the tour buses stop in the same area. So where ever you see a different tour bus company that is where you needed to wait for DC trails. I had Deon and Joe I think the second tour guide name was. They both were great and provided a lot of information about each destination. I will definitely do another tour with DC trails. The only issues which is not DC trails problem the U. S. Capital was shut down and China town was also closed off for access. read more

Here's a summary of our experience, with the details to follow: We were NOT picked up when/where they said we would, we were lied to about where the bus and driver was, then they sent the bus back to us even though they were already on their way to Mt. Vernon (messing with everyone else's trip). Then, the bus driver and bus were not there to pick us up at Mt. Vernon as he promised leaving the whole group to sit and breath diesel dust by the side of the road until he showed up 15-20 minutes late, and not for a good reason! What!? Here's the details: We booked a tour to Mount Vernon through our hotel concierge the day before. We were told when and where we would be picked up and were there the next day about 20 minutes early. We waited an additional 15 minutes after the pick-up time before calling the # on the receipt. Was told that the driver was in the lobby looking for us. Total lie. After talking to myself, then my husband, and getting the concierge who did the booking involved, all of a sudden they said that the bus was being sent back to get us. (Why would they make such an obvious lie about the driver being in the lobby looking for us if they knew he had already picked up people at other hotels?) I felt very bad getting on the bus when they came back because all those people must have already been on the bus for awhile, and this was obviously making everyone later than expected. The bus driver was a very nice guy, gave us a good tour of the area around Mt. Vernon and some good bits of history. He really knew his stuff. He got us our tickets to tour the house at Mt. Vernon, and explained the group where he would be waiting for us and when he wanted "the wheels rolling." He even gave some of us his cell phone in case we needed anything. So you can bet that hubby and I wanted to be early to the bus so there'd be no chance of us holding everyone up again, but guess what? We walked the entire 1/2 mile or so of buses lined up on the side of the road, and ours wasn't there. We walked back and waited to see others in our group and walked about halfway up with them. I stopped at another vehicle that was DC Trails and asked that driver about where our bus/driver was. He was helpful and called our driver and/or dispatch and told us that "the late couple" had gotten sick and needed to go back. Ok...now were blaming this on us too? No way. But we figured that a group got sick and needed to go back, which is fine. He got there about 15-20 minutes later and explained that one of the groups had come back an hour early (no illnesses or emergencies, just can't tell time) so he decided to take them back since he didn't think he'd be too late back to pick us up. Hmm...I think poor decision making. They did not charge us for the trip because of the snafu at the beginning, which is nice because it all made for a very stressful and ridiculous day. read more

We were looking forward to using this service to see the city and liked the idea of being able to get on and off as we wanted to. It worked good initially we were able to find a bus and get on and travel to a stop we wanted to. After that it went downhill. We used the app to track the buses and went to a location to meet a bus. After a 20 minute wait we called to see when the next bus would come by. The app showed 3 buses out on the route two were following closely behind each other. The third was not moving at all, which was the bus we were waiting on. Eventually a bus showed up but not the double decker buses that they advertise. When watched the app and eventually got on a double decker bus. Once we returned to the starting point of the tour we had to change buses since the one we were on was the last bus of the day. We switched buses and then sat for 25 minutes waiting for it to leave. Nobody said when the bus was going to leave. We would have been better walking back to our hotel. Brenda and Cruz were our guide and driver on the double decker bus and did a great job. The staff on the other buses were not as good. If we return we will look at a different company to get around the city. read more

Do NOT use this bus! We waited 30 minutes to be picked up at first stop as promised but it was all downhill after that. Waited an hour at the rest of the stops during which time two of DC Trails competitors came by 2 - 3 times. Missed seeing much because of this. Also 3 of the 20 stops closed. Two were in a row so required very long walks. Last full bus trip is at 5. We got on at 4:30 when they took us to the first stop and made us get off to wait 30 minutes for another bus. We ended up having to walk to see a Smithsonian building before it closed at 5:30. read more

Purchased tickets through Groupon. This is one of many 'hop in, hop off' bus operators in DC. Their website and brochure advertise they pick up and drop off at Union Station. They don't. So, after buying tickets and traveling to Union Station, we had to walk several blocks to their nearest pick up point. Once on board, we had one of the worst narrated tours imaginable. Was it her first time- reading in public? Or the script? And the sound system was atrocious. So we hopped off to visit a museum and caught another of their busses. This time, the narration and sound system were as bad as the first. Avoid this operator and pay $1 for The Circulator, a city operated bus line. read more
