I visited this establishment because it came highly recommended. I reviewed the menu and even though it was hot, I opted for the soup. The owner mentioned that it was not a popular item for the summer, but I decided that I wanted to try it. The food came out, I tried the soup and it was completely bland. After trying my sisters dish, I decided I wanted to switch to what she was having. The owner came back, I mentioned I wanted to switch and she said she would still charge me for the bland soup. Dawas is the quintessential idealization of a neighborhood restaurant - friendly faces that get to know you over time, a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere, and a menu that provides enough variability/seasonality that coming back on a regular basis isn't boring. The chef, Dawa, is an incredibly deft cook. I know most people come here for momos or the chicken sandwich, but I must say my wife and I have been blown away time and again by the dishes on the American menu. Arancini with peas and micro greens? Duck breast with chestnut sauce? Polenta with mushroom bolognese? Chef can cook her freaking ass off. This place is one of the best kept secrets in NYC, and I'm torn between the idea of wanting to keep it to myself and having this place not become insanely popular vs wanting more people to experience Dawa's skills. I'm telling you - be adventurous and try some of the seasonal stuff, you won't regret it. BOO! I drove to Dawa on 8/7, eager because of the glowing reviews but wary because it wasn't answering its phone. On my arrival it was dark, with a sign in the window that it was closed because of ConEd work. Several other wood-be patrons were milling around, their scrolling through their cell phones, and a few more arrived to disappointment. I'm sorry about Dawa's problems, but by failing to record a closure message on its phone line and posting an alert on its website, it showed no consideration for its customers. For shame! read more

Perfect perfect perfect! We came here on Saturday afternoon to get a quick bite to eat and check out the spot which is right across the street from the new apartment. I was pretty mindblown. We love diving into new cultures, so were excited about a cuisine neither us had tried before. First off lets start with the atmosphere- so cool. It is very rustic yet clean, with really interesting furniture that makes you feel like you are somewhere far far away from NYC (in the good way). The service was excellent- I wish I could remember our waiters name but he was absolutely WONDERFUL, and passionate about the food. As for the food- we tried the veggie momos and the classic burger and both were delicious. I have a feeling we will be back here really soon, and I hope to try more authentic/adventurous dishes. read more

Dawa's is a very good brunch spot and a lovely addition to Woodside. While its offerings may not be as revelatory as Queens Comfort's, it more than makes up for that with its homeyness, affordability, and best of all, lack of 30min+ lines. As many have noted, Dawa's serves up a nice combination of typical bistro fare and Himalayan/Nepalese specialties, but do make sure to consult the rotating menu. For brunch, my friends and I started with the chicken momos, which were a rich and filling way to start the meal. My friend ordered the fried chicken sandwich, which, while messy, made for a delicious entree. What stood out especially were the crispy chicken, fluffy bun, and spicy (but not overwhelming by any means) jalapeno aioli. I myself went with the baked eggs, whose colorful cauliflower and rosy tomatoes made for an Instagram-ready dish. Served in a small skillet, the end result was filling and flavorful, a perfect antidote to the fast approaching winter. And the prices are great here: $10-12 for entrees, a solid price in NYC brunchland. For a local, relaxed brunch, I'll be sure to be back soon. read more

This place is truly a gift to the neighborhood of sunnyside. Chef Dawa is trained in France and she is also able to incorporate Tibetan Himalayan cuisine into their seasonal menu. All the ingredients are local, fresh and organic. I love their baked egg, mushroom toast, momo soup on a cold winter morning. On other days I just like to munch on their gourmet pancakes or French toast served with real maple syrup!! Nothing in queens compare to this brunch place so far. Heck, even better than many of places in Manhattan with its overpriced basic breakfast menus. Enjoy!! I really love everything about this place. Although it is a fusion of American brunch food and Tibetan/Himalayan food it is really homey and the food is comforting. After trying their chicken momos I converted to a momo lover. The sauce on the bottom was delicious and the dumplings themselves were juicy and not dry. I also tried one of the noodle soup dishes and it was different than other noodle soups I have had before, it looked like it would be spicy and heavy but instead the broth was light and not too salty either. It was just alright I would have definitely opted for more momos! I also tried one the egg dishes which had a lot of veggies inside and it was enjoyable but I hope to try something else next time. The interior is very cute with rustic tables and a big window right in front; I love the simplicity of the place & it is great for all week brunch! read more

Also had their decaf coffee for $1.25 and it was well prepared. Before 10:30 it's grab n go and after it's table service. The place is quite spacious w nice indoor and outdoor natural lighting. While I like their mix of antique & repossessed furniture, their white walls bother me. On one side they do have some artwork but it's quite small for such a massive white wall. Also the color palette in the artwork is quite awful & not complementary to the space & decor overall. Just my personal eeek! Ordered Buttermilk fried chicken sandwich and their own potato chips. Amazing. Will be back for sure i want to try the grass fed lamb meatballs. Dawa is a magician, and this is her home. It's a beautiful and cozy little place in the coziest littlest neighborhood in New York City. It's decorated perfect and you feel like you're in someone's perfectly curated living room. The staff is smart, friendly, and young. Then the food comes out. Dawa worked at the Mercer Kitchen in SoHo and her talent (she's owner and chef) is in every plate. The food is good. The food is hearty. It's not heavy and it's not that expensive. But it is delicious and it will keep you tethered to your plate. You sit there for a bit. My girlfriend is trying to get to the point in life where she can eat here every day. If you like slightly burnt Brussels sprouts crisped so well that you'd think this was gods greatest mistake, come here. It's really good. read more

As a health nut AND foodie, I was ecstatic to find this gem in the neighborhood. This brunch place is vegetarian and vegan-friendly, and apparently, their menu is seasonal. They had the brunch and ethnic menu, and I was in the mood for something savory rather than sweet, so we went for the momos and vegan noodles. They used whole wheat wraps for the momos so I was pleasantly surprised. Their drinks were also very cheap compared to other places. The prices are very reasonable; it felt like eating in a place in Manhattan for half the price. The only mistake I ever made was to look at the pastries/dessert section when I went to the bathroom, and I saw some croissants, cheesecake, Italian cheesecake, and cannoli being displayed. Desserts and pastries will be the death of me. I usually NEVER get cannoli as they are too sweet for my taste, but they were calling out to me and I couldn't resist. I wanted to see for myself if this just might be the one. I am not going to lie, this was indeed the best cannoli I ever had. I agree with Natasha G. below that 4 stars would be a bit generous, so I'll even us out with this 3 because 3.5 would have been more accurate. Note: I did not try the Tibetan food, just the weekend brunch. My +1 and I decided to walk the mile to Dawa's for brunch during the hottest weekend of the year (feels like 113 degrees?! Aughh.) My first problem was that the air conditioning was completely insufficient for the space. It was nearly as hot inside as it was outside, minus the burning direct sunlight. So negligibly better. The place is undoubtedly a local spot. The decor is cute, with a major reclaimed wood look, accented by edison bulbs, a few chalkboard menus, and some original art pieces along the wall. The brunch menu is quite short, which was a bit disappointing only because they apparently no longer serve avocado toast, nor their cod sandwich, which would have been most appealing to me. At least you won't suffer from analysis paralysis here! I ordered the Buttermilk Chicken sandwich. It was -delicious- and I highly recommend it. It had all the right qualities; it was deliciously juicy, perfectly fried, and an incredible buttermilk batter that looks so good it could have been on a televised commercial. Plus, anything served on a brioche bun scores major points. There was a jalapeno aioli, but do not be deterred if you don't like spice! I can't tolerate spice well at all, and this was perfectly mild, yet full of flavor. The picked onions provided a nice bite and overall it went together seamlessly. The portion was very filling. Plus, a side of potato chips! I hope they're made in house, because they were awesome - sliced super thin, salted perfectly, and satisfyingly crispy to go with the juiciness of the chicken. The best aspects of Dawa's is definitely the freshness and quality of the food/cooking and the affordable price, but as a personal preference I would probably not make the trek back here when there are plenty of other choices in Astoria with drink options that I can feel a little more freedom with. Plus I sweat so much I left a gross condensation outline of my butt on the seat. Please get better air conditioning for the summer! Overall: Great food, but it remains a local spot because I wouldn't travel too far to eat here specifically - the 3 star "A-OK" Yelp description felt most accurate. If you're within walking distance, then absolutely try Dawa's. read more

Thanks to their traditional and american menu they offer a lot of variety no matter what you're in the mood for. This place recently opened down the block from me and I couldn't be happier! Only in Queens would you find a restaurant that serves traditional American brunch alongside traditional Tibetan dishes, no explanations necessary. Their menu staples remain the same, but details (what's inside the dumplings, the vegetable sides, etc) change every week. I usually get the vegetable momo- the dumplings are delicious, the sauce is amazing, AND it's only $7. There are plants on every table and all the pottery is handmade on location by the owner- the waitress told me you can even rent the bottle-cutter from the restaurant to make your own cups if you want. They seem to get pretty busy for weekend brunch times, so try to go on a weekday (but not Wednesday because they're closed). I just wish they were open later in the evening, I don't always get home before they close. read more
