We were driving by here and decided to pop in for a quick lunch. They have a little bit of everything on the menu, from classics like pancakes, omelettes, and sandwiches- to chilaquiles, etc. Parking is a lot around the building, since it was lunchtime it was a little busy. We were greeted and seated, they brought out some homemade tortilla chips (thicker side, sturdy!) and salsa, which was absolutely delicious. My friend and I decided to get gyros, they were truly delicious, the pita bread grilled nicely, the shaved meat then crispy and caramelized on the flat top, and they ran out of fries so we got home fries- which was also magnificent bc of the onions, seasoning, and butter. I was glad to see they had a cooler with Gatorade zero, so I drank a couple with my meal. Very busy, people coming in for take out and you can tell it's popular with the local groups you would trust when looking at a place to eat- construction workers, hospital employees, random folks. This is one of my favorite off the beaten path restaurants in Chicago. The food is solid, and the prices are stellar. I would put this in the "Jack of all trades, master of none," category. All the basics (quesadilla, grilled cheese) are good; the standout was the steak sandwich, which was excellent. The gyro was 'just ok', but the portion size was large. I've always been curious about this place since I started coming into the area. Some days it looks pretty empty other days it is packed. Today it is one of the former. Coming in here you're greeted by the cashier. David's grill makes good use of the space... accomodating plenty of seating without sacrificing floor space. It is almost exclusively booths aside from the high chairs so prepare to enjoy your food with strangers. They have a wide selection on the menu arranging from traditional Mexican dishes to American cuisine and even Mediterranean food. The Mediterranean steak intrigued me even though the $14.99 price tag hints at the quality. As with every Mexican restaurant they welcome you with chips and salsa. The salsa itself is good, but the homemade chips are horrendous (most likely fried in very old oil.) The steak was ready in about 10 minutes. It comes with fries caramelized onions, garlic bread and a salad. The portions are great so you won't have to worry about leaving hungry at David's grill. There's a lack of an even crust on the steak and you can tell they cooked it as of it were fajita strips (flipping it a bunch of times, probably not searing it, etc.) which is why it is unevenly cooked. The steak isn't evenly seasoned either, with some parts having too much seasoning while others have too little. read more

I have a secret... I love hole-in-the-wall taco joints. This love started in college when I used to eat at this random spot downtown called GnG's, which was a diner/ taco joint. You could get amazing tacos and French toast. That spot closed over ten years ago, but you know what's still around and kept me satisfied? David's Grill!! I love this place. It's right on the corner of Cermak and Halsted, and the best part is its parking lot. Yes, the food is what you expect from a taco diner, but it is perfect for a quick meal. I have eaten their breakfast as well, and it's pretty competitive with significant restaurants. Also, the prices are fair as well. You can eat like a king for 20 bucks. For this particular meal, I got a simple two-steak taco with lettuce, tomato, sour cream and beans with a side of fries and a coffee, which tasted as I expected and thoroughly enjoyed. I am writing this review because I want to see more spaces like this get their flowers. The fast, reliable sit-down stop was not the prettiest, but I had a lot of love for the execution. If you want something quick and near Halsted and Cermak, David's Grill is a good choice. read more

Conveniently located just steps from my apartment, it is the perfect fill-me-up-make-me-sleep meal after a long night of work. Horrible. I went there regularly for a small amount of time. The food is alright for the price and the location was convienient. Until one day i noticed a unusual amount of ants wondering around freely. I brought the Andes to the attention of the hostess but she brushed it off. Let's forget about the food for a second and how clean the interior should be.. This is a corner diner after all, so can't expect much. I want to talk to you "David's Grill" about your coffee. Coffee is the simplest thing that anyone can make. Is it so hard to get a new coffee machine that won't have that after taste of old burnt coffee taste. Coffee should not stand there for days until it's completely gone. It should be replaced with time, so the coffee is fresh instead of tasting like it was last weeks coffee. I ate here a billion of times. (Wish I did not) I am not even going to discuss the food, but the coffee is consistently bad every single time. I wish that the owner would invest into a new coffee machine and throw that 1980's burnt coffee machine out. Why do I keep going back? Well.. Ask a crackhead why he/she goes back to the dealer even though they know the stash is half assed. They have excellent daily specials with large portions for cheap. Sandwich, fries and a drink for under $6. I'm a gyro fanatic, so I'm always willing to try places that have them. Finally decided to give them a try with my mother. Well the inside is definitely a Mexican-American restaurant, with a combination of menu items from both ethnic food groups. This all came to a surprise from me since there was no indication there would be anything but American food. And this is where I think it falls short. My gyro was a whole bunch of alright. Little sauce, little veggies, even the meat tasted average. My mom got a club sandwich and she said it was decent. Maybe it was a bad day, or maybe all their "American" dishes are average. I love David's and I can't say it enough. I work a few blocks away and make the walk over there for lunch at least twice a week. First of all, the food is so cheap. Most items are right around $5. Second of all, the food is delicious. The service is usually pretty quick and always very friendly. They know me now as a regular and know my "usuals".
