I've always been curious about this place since I started coming into the area. Some days it looks pretty empty other days it is packed. Today it is one of the former. Coming in here you're greeted by the cashier. David's grill makes good use of the space... accomodating plenty of seating without sacrificing floor space. It is almost exclusively booths aside from the high chairs so prepare to enjoy your food with strangers. They have a wide selection on the menu arranging from traditional Mexican dishes to American cuisine and even Mediterranean food. The Mediterranean steak intrigued me even though the $14.99 price tag hints at the quality. As with every Mexican restaurant they welcome you with chips and salsa. The salsa itself is good, but the homemade chips are horrendous (most likely fried in very old oil.) The steak was ready in about 10 minutes. It comes with fries caramelized onions, garlic bread and a salad. The portions are great so you won't have to worry about leaving hungry at David's grill. There's a lack of an even crust on the steak and you can tell they cooked it as of it were fajita strips (flipping it a bunch of times, probably not searing it, etc.) which is why it is unevenly cooked. The steak isn't evenly seasoned either, with some parts having too much seasoning while others have too little.

I have a secret... I love hole-in-the-wall taco joints. This love started in college when I used to eat at this random spot downtown called GnG's, which was a diner/ taco joint. You could get amazing tacos and French toast. That spot closed over ten years ago, but you know what's still around and kept me satisfied? David's Grill!! I love this place. It's right on the corner of Cermak and Halsted, and the best part is its parking lot. Yes, the food is what you expect from a taco diner, but it is perfect for a quick meal. I have eaten their breakfast as well, and it's pretty competitive with significant restaurants. Also, the prices are fair as well. You can eat like a king for 20 bucks. For this particular meal, I got a simple two-steak taco with lettuce, tomato, sour cream and beans with a side of fries and a coffee, which tasted as I expected and thoroughly enjoyed. I am writing this review because I want to see more spaces like this get their flowers. The fast, reliable sit-down stop was not the prettiest, but I had a lot of love for the execution. If you want something quick and near Halsted and Cermak, David's Grill is a good choice.

Great spot just 5 minutes away from the south loop. An ole school breakfast spot that also has Mexican food served all hours. I am a corned beef hash and eggs guy and I love this spot! Always fresh and hot and great service! Will update when I try the other items on the menu

my boyfriend and i have been here a few times and each time the waitress is kind and attentive. the food is good and the prices are great. the place is a bit outdated though. good place to get some quick eats. don't expect a nice fancy restaurant either lol Their menudo is good and doesn't stink or have a strong taste.

Food so good it should be a sin. If I could give this place 10 stars I would. So flavorful and tastes homemade.

I came in the middle of the night and that whole breakfast-for-dinner vibe hit the spot. Parking is street only, but it was easy. Seating felt a bit limited(12 or so seating across the grill) since it's colder out, but I'd definitely come back to check out their patio when the weather's nicer. The staff was super helpful with recommendations. I ended up getting the southern omelette, corned beef skillet, hot cocoa, and a short stack -- and yeah, those pancakes are a must. Everything came out hot and satisfying, perfect late-night comfort food. Perfect spot for late-night eats or when you're craving something simple and filling. I'd go back for sure.

It was busy, but luckily seats opened right when we walked in so we were able to be seated right away. Diner Grill is no frills with just a bar, barstools, and a view into the small kitchen. Prices on the menu are very fair for the quantity and quality of the food. I ordered the breakfast burrito and my husband ordered chilaquiles w/ chorizo. After you order, you see your order made right in front of you. My husband especially loves the chilaquiles because of how crispy and fresh they are (he doesn't like soggy chips!) and argues Diner Grill has some of the best. I was impressed with my breakfast burrito and enjoyed it! When the staff sees you winding down, they bring the bill; this is an eat and go kind of spot. We both got orange juices (LARGE glasses, we'll share one next time) and that plus our entrees ran us about $20pp with tax and tip. Very reasonable in my opinion! Overall I really enjoyed my meal and will be back at Diner Grill!! Love how close it is to home and perfect for a good hangover breakfast/late night snack as they're open 24/7.

I would assume a place where the newest thing since the 1980s is the security camera would have vinyl with more cracks and patina than my trusty old leather jacket! But no, it's in fantastic shape. Especially given that, the vibe in here is awesome! It's like stepping through a time-portal. For food, I ordered an old favorite: Pigs in Blankets. The food came out fast, though, to be fair, there was only one other person dining in at the time. The sausage links were crisp, and the pancakes were lightly sweet and fluffy. All in all, great! While perhaps not enough to summon the Michelin Guide inspectors, it was better than the average greasy spoon. Finally, I really appreciate that the prices are reasonable, and that there is parking! Final verdict: I've had a small handful of spectacular breakfasts. I've also had criminal breakfasts, where two unsalted eggs, two bacon strips, and a tablespoon of potatoes costs $14.95. Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House finds itself in that sweet spot in between - it is neither a spectacular spot (often have prices to boot), nor is it an overpriced, underwhelming greasy spoon that stays in business thanks to regulars who have been coming for decades and don't want anything better.
