The homemade mole had a nice sweet tates of chocolate blended with the melted cheese over the corn tortillas were to die for. My wife had the Carnes steak slice thinly to be enjoyed with bites of those homemade tortillas. Too much food for the money !! Both dished came with generous portions of rice and beans too. Let's not forget the fresh corn chips served with a warm to temperature but nice hit after bite homemade salsa. The waitress and staff were Extremely friendly. The menus are Spanish but staff is bilingual so no worries. Just point your finger at something on the menu and it is all good. To celebrate Cinco De Mayo we split a margarita with lime and over the rocks. It too was generously portioned. This restaurant is off the main tracks but worth the visit in Pilsen. Very very old style Mexican place. This is the place that your parents would bring you on a random Saturday evening. The interior is nothing special so don't go for the vibes. The food portion is great but it also matches the price that you pay. I got a pina colada with alcohol and it was delicious. I def felt the alcohol! I also ordered the Milanese. It was very thin and fried. I enjoyed the rice and beans that came with my order. I would also mention that this place doesn't offer chips and dips when you walk in. I would give 0 stars if I could. They made us wait over an hour for food and then the waitress has the nerve to tell us she messed up with our order and that she didn't put it all in. She told us only some food was going to be ready and once we told her we were leaving she said we couldn't cancel the order. You mess up you pay for the food and fix your problem. This place is good but nothing spectacular. The tostadas were ok the tostada was stale and the camaron and pulpo didn't have any flavor. My boyfriend got a burrito not pictured but it was pretty good, he got asada and it was flavorful. The place is a bit outdated and it's a bit pricey in my opinion. I have been driving past this place for years, I have tried almost every restaurant in the area, I wish I would have gone in sooner! Stopped in with my friend for lunch on a Saturday, the parking lot was filling up so we figured we'd try it out. A steady stream of customers while we were there, a man came in with a guitar and sang in the background. The staff was very friendly and made sure we had everything we wanted. Chips and salsa served when you sit down. The menu has a large variety, the food was delicious, and I absolutely love the handmade tortillas! I had Bistek ala Mexicana and the portions were large. Beans and rice were very tasty, salad was nice with fresh shaved carrots. Salsa had a little kick. My friend ordered a gordita, also handmade, it was so big it barely fit on the plate! The decor is a bit older, but quaint. The place is very clean. Some of the negative reviews seem to be from a few years back- I don't know if it's new owners or just better now, but this is definitely our new go to place! read more

We were here for dinner and a friend recommended this place. I just realized until we were here that it did not have good reviews. We were seated in approximately 20 minutes. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We ordered tacos, enchiladas con moles and the chilaquiles rojos con cecina. Guacamole as appetizer with tortilla chips. The guacamole and the chip were great, along with the hot/warm salsa they serve with the chips. The chilaquiles were meh! They were soft and wet, not crunchy like I'm used to. Rice and beans average. The enchiladas con mole were also not superb. They were average in taste. They don't have fountain sodas. The place needs some improvements including the restrooms. While we were there, there was a guy who pooped on the urinal . The door of the sanitary was locked, I guess this guy was really in a hurry. I don't want to even describe how the bathroom looked. The last time we came here it was under different ownership, and have to admit I left with saying that I wouldn't come back. However, since then they've changed ownership. Today we were looking for a place close by after a Costco run, so it was something on 18th or here. I remembering hearing that some people said it was better now, so that along with parking swayed us to try it again. Pulling up I have to admit I wasn't sure if they were even open, the lot had a fence around it, for a moment I thought they were getting ready to take the building down (not a bad idea) the fence and the dark entry made it look closed. Much to our surprise we did see some people exiting, so I finished parking and we headed in. Upon entering I began to regret our choice, the glass doors didn't look like they've been cleaned in a while, and the place looked pretty tired, I also noticed a strong fishy smell. I know they have plenty of fish on the menu, but I'd rather read about it instead of smelling it. We sat at a table by some fake plants, primarily leaves and those looked like they had layers of dust on them. Sort of confusing because at the time there seemed to be a lot of cleaning going on. A complete redecorating and deep cleaning could do this place wonders. Especially since the food was enjoyable with ample portions. I ordered the cheese enchiladas with mole, each enchilada was a good size, so much so that I could only eat one. The rice was tastier than average, the beans I'd say average but a good consistency. My husband said his tacos were a little on the salty side, but good. We enjoyed the warm salsa, it had a good amount of spice, however I think heating it makes it soupy instead of the usual chunky style served most places. I can't say that this place would be a destination spot, however, if in the area and looking for Mexican I'd give it another try. read more

I was there yesterday. additional charges for everything. not a problem to pay an additional charge if it wasn't for all notices posted throughout the dining area. making a customer feel like we are an inconvenience. prices were changed from the menu then we were charged an additional charge from new price. 2 sandwiches with rice and beans, 2 cans of soda and small bowl of chips & Salsa. $46. large property around building. the view out the windows the area looked like a junk yard. curtains needed to be cleaned. after Tip $55 if that wasn't enough...guitarist played and sang then made the rounds asking for tips. read more

After seeing the reviews here and always driving by it (and assuming it was abandoned for so many years) we decided to give it a go on a Sunday, so it was quite packed. We decided to order to go and the wait time for it was descent. We were acknowledged immediately so that was a plus. This seems not to be the best place for a quick bite, it looks like they have a wide variety of dishes, but not so much Mexican food that is intended as a quick bite. More like a place to sit,eat and enjoy the ambiance. They do not have alpastor (I know, what kind of establishment is this right?!) and serve their tacos w lettuce and tomato. I didn't think the taco tortilla seemed homemade but idk if they do that for their other dishes only. Everyone talks about their carne asada, but to me it tasted like I normally cook at home so for us there was absolutely nothing special about it. They def added home seasoning, the same sazon that momma uses so nothing really stood out. So if you like home-style cooking and dont have time to do it yourself, then this is def the spot for you. If you're looking for "restaurant flavor/taste" (there is such thing) tacos go somewhere else. The portions are pretty big. We had the asada burrito and I would say it had tooo much meat. Bad thing? Not really, but def something to take notice of. French fries were good, but didn't have salt (Simple fix, but still thought I should mention it). Salsas were def warm, but watery and chunky at the same time and was absolutely not spicy like at all and had no flavor whatsoever, but it was a pretty color. By looking at the reviews I thought it was a great place but I didn't like it at all. Food was way over priced and they didn't even have refills. They were canned sodas the food I ordered had no seasoning, the rice was ok beans didn't have a flavor. Well, this place was close to wear we had to be today. So we stopped. They have their own parking which is a plus. Going in, it was pretty quiet, so we were seated right away. Checking the menu I noticed they had machacado con huevos! One of my favorite A.M. dishes! And half my family being from Monterrey, I knew that was exactly what I wanted! However,when we got it, the meat was actually steak. They give you a good portion,but that was not actually machacado. In addition, chips and/or salsa is and extra charge, I mean at a Mexican restaurant that is usually part of the meal. The food was not that expensive but I don't think I would go again. read more

Breakfast was really lonely at Manjares. They didn't seem too friendly or were excited to receive customers after a long year off. I understand social distancing but we were greeted with the host clear across the restaurant and told to pick a seat. That might be common in a dinner or Waffle House, didn't expect it from a table service restaurant with a full bar and hostess stand. Upon sitting down, we were offered drinks. We opted for water I'm sure came from the bathroom sink! Barely any ice, nevertheless it wasn't good. We used our own bottled water. The food was just ok. The Chiliques were soggy and had zero crunch. They were all submerged in the red sauce. We had to ask for some chips on the side. I don't think they cook the chips on site. They didn't taste homemade fresh but probably were store bought fresh. The steak didn't taste seasoned with even salt. The waitress only came to check on us when we flipped the light. Very strange experience. No small talk or simple welcoming feeling. They have some work to do with the appearance on the outside to welcome people as well as inside. For it to be early in the morning a more light hearted and welcoming attitude should have existed. I'm sure they need a new hostess. We flipped the light and another annoyed employee came out and gave us boxes to go. I wasn't going to leave all that food. We can have the enchilada later. The Chiliques is a done deal, it was already soggy! I'd say try it if you like. If you like being left alone and strictly business you'd enjoy yourself. Such amazing chiquilles! I came here for breakfast on a Saturday morning and was blown away by the chiquilles. This dish was perfectly balanced and the verde sauce was very spicy (Just like I like it). Possibly the best chiquilles I've ever had. I came during a very non busy time (10 am on a Saturday), so there weren't many people there, but the restaurant is very spacious and could hold larger groups of people. Also, if you are driving here, the restaurant has a good size parking lot which is a plus. This is a place worth checking out. read more

Guacamole is delicious (and more spicy than many, which makes me happy). Fresh pico de gallo served with seared, thin flank steak and guacamole on a handmade tortilla is pretty hard to beat! Breakfasts are amazing as well. The classification as 'new American' is goofy. This is tried-and-true Mexican country cuisine. Accept it as such and you will enjoy a delicious meal. Regarding the decor: I frankly love it. Most of the counters are handmade furniture with beautiful carving from Mexico. The booths are careworn, but clean. Yes, it's dated, but it's also traditional and not faux Mexican like some of the pricier joints in town. Some local guys frequently show up with their guitars to play (not paid, just patrons with musical tendencies), so hopefully you will get a lovely, classical serenade when you visit! read more

Went here on a lark after it was recommend by our Uber driver. The restaurant is nothing to speak of -- rundown decor that probably hasn't been changed in two decades or more. Mexican songs blared out from the jukebox. However, we were there for the food, not the ambiance. Unfortunately the food was scarcely better than the decor. Carne asada lacked flavor as did the guacamole. The highlight of the meal was the starter chips and salsa (served warm) that was better than average, but nothing to write home about.
