Chilaquiles w/ steak and over and easy eggs
    Christine H.

CASH ONLY. Chilaquiles is SO GOOD here. I got it with chorizo with scrambled eggs and it was delicious. I almost finished the whole plate but I was so full. My friend got the same dish but with over and easy eggs with steak and she said it was also good. Whatever you get with your chilaquiles, it will be delicious. It comes with housemade salsa in a bottle and it's so good. They make 30 pounds of it every week. I had the cucumber and lime drink and it was slightly sweet and very refreshing. It paired well with the chilaquiles. The space and seating area is intimate and smaller, but it def has a homey feel and you get to watch what goes behind the scenes behind the counter as they cook and prepare ingredients. The owner is super nice and welcoming. He explains the menu very well. I will def come back here again to try their other dishes!

Okay I love this place. Amazing customer service. The staff is so friendly and greeted me with a free bowl of soup while I waited on my to-go order. The soup was so good. Tons of veggies, chicken, and bow tie pasta. The service was so phenomenal and the staff was so attentive while making my order, making sure everything was cooked how I wanted it to be. I can tell this will be a go-to for me in the future.

Nice little neighborhood diner for an affordable, fillIng breakfast or lunch. The man working behind the counter was extremely friendly and gave us a newspaper to read while waiting for food. He recommended the chilaquiles, which were bomb and I see becoming a common hangover go to. Also tried the pancakes and they were pretty good, would have been better if I weren't so shy to ask for more syrup.. The man serving us gave us a big bottle of a yummy homemade salsa to top our chilaquiles and hashbrowns with, I'd highly recommend adding a lot of it . Will definitely be coming here often, and you can't beat the price! Also just to note, it's cash only so you can come with it or use their ATM

They were a bit short-staffed that morning, so service was slower than usual, but we weren't in a hurry and the staff remained friendly throughout. I ordered the daily special French toast, added fruit and pecans, plus a side of bacon. The French toast was absolutely massive and could easily be shared. My only complaint was the $3.75 charge for pecans, which felt a little steep for the amount included. Overall, the food was good, the diner atmosphere was exactly what I was hoping for, and there's something special about dining in such a historic Chicago institution. If you're visiting the city and don't mind a bit of a wait, Lou Mitchell's is worth experiencing at least once.

And this is on top of the city parking you have to pay to eat there. It's just craziness. I will say that the toast was pretty delicious. The server was nice enough. The bathrooms were downstairs and needed attention.

I had the corned beef hash, which was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, while my husband ordered the Mexican omelet with taco meat, and he couldn't stop talking about how good it was. We also enjoyed an iced coffee and a chocolate shake, both of which were fantastic. Of course, we couldn't resist trying a few extras, so we ordered the chocolate-covered pancakes and potato pancakes for the table. Both were incredible and the perfect addition to our meal. Between the delicious food, cozy atmosphere, and friendly service, this was such a great experience. We will definitely be back the next time we're craving an amazing breakfast or brunch. I would assume a place where the newest thing since the 1980s is the security camera would have vinyl with more cracks and patina than my trusty old leather jacket! But no, it's in fantastic shape. Especially given that, the vibe in here is awesome! It's like stepping through a time-portal. For food, I ordered an old favorite: Pigs in Blankets. The food came out fast, though, to be fair, there was only one other person dining in at the time. The sausage links were crisp, and the pancakes were lightly sweet and fluffy. All in all, great! While perhaps not enough to summon the Michelin Guide inspectors, it was better than the average greasy spoon. Finally, I really appreciate that the prices are reasonable, and that there is parking! Final verdict: I've had a small handful of spectacular breakfasts. I've also had criminal breakfasts, where two unsalted eggs, two bacon strips, and a tablespoon of potatoes costs $14.95. Golden House Restaurant & Pancake House finds itself in that sweet spot in between - it is neither a spectacular spot (often have prices to boot), nor is it an overpriced, underwhelming greasy spoon that stays in business thanks to regulars who have been coming for decades and don't want anything better.

I had no idea that this was one of those restaurants where everyone insults you and is rude to you - but it was a fun surprise! Also just listening to all the servers around us insult the customers is so funny and entertaining. My friend and I dedicated a day where we would just put our name down and however long it took we would wait haha. We drove into the city which took and hour and we put our name down and waited an hour before we were called. The weather was great so we just walked around the west loop area. We started with a half size of the green salad and a half size of the roasted bone marrow. The house salad is super refreshing. A lot of vinegar in the dressing which I personally really like. Also tasted some fennel which was an interesting flavor. The roasted bone marrow is the winner of the night. I would come back to Au Cheval for this alone. It was paired with a thick slice of Texas toast and a beef cheek marmalade and it is seriously the PERFECT balance of flavors. Fatty. Sweet. Buttery. Literally insane and this is a must order! Then came the famous burger. My friend and I each ordered a single cheeseburger with the egg and bacon added. Something to note is that the single cheeseburger actually has 2 patties and the double cheeseburger has 3 patties (3/4lbs of beef). The presentation itself is beautiful and makes you just not want to eat it haha. The burger itself is so decadent and hefty with the burger patties, cheese, egg and bacon. I'll be honest, I needed some more pickles or just something to cut all the fattiness of the burger. There were pickles in the burger and it is served with a huge pickle spear. But I still was itching for some more bitterness/acid to balance the flavors. It was so decadent, I couldn't finish it all. All in all, I would definitely come back and order the burger again and would recommend it to anyone! We ordered a side of fries which came with their garlic aioli. The fries were cooked to perfection. Super crunchy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside and piping hot! The garlic aioli is perfect and have no notes for it. We also were treated to a vanilla scoop with chocolate sauce which was the perfect cap to our meal! Our waitress was so friendly and my friend and I loved her! She was so sweet and genuine. Hog Salt restaurants never fail with their service!

I'd like to throw in my own quote into the gauntlet: "it's ok". It sounds harsh but Our burger patty was noticeably dry. The bread... was also dry. The egg and bacon add-ons were good but as a whole, the burger was missing the core aspect. The bread being dry I can justify by knowing that Au Cheval makes it a point to make everything gluten-free (or so someone told me). I think that's cool but not necessarily what I came looking for. I actually noticed prior to our trip from photos that the buns looked noticeably arid but I gave them no heed because of all of the praise. And I can give them the benefit of the doubt that we were there on a Sunday night, so potentially not the most quality inventory (although I personally don't think that's a great excuse). The service and the ambiance were on point! If you're wondering if there's a required attire (no shorts or flip flops) I wouldn't fret, the atmosphere is a lot more casual despite self-describing as an "intimate" setting. It's definitely more intimate than a normal burger restaurant, with dim lighting and isolated booths but what you're wearing isn't going to dictate how other guests and staff feel. I would cover up anyways just cause there was ac running. I told my friend who moved from Nyc to Chicago and he said he felt the same. And one of our couple friends were surprised to hear the patty being dry, so... off day?
