I was looking for a good place (that I have never been to) for brunch on a Saturday morning. This place definitely fit the bill. Great place to go on Broadway in the Lakeview neighborhood. The food was also very good too. I ended up getting a Gypsy skillet, one of my go-to brunch items. It came out nice and hot and plentiful. It did taste freshly made with melted cheese and the eggs were oh so good. There were also mushrooms, ham, onions, and peppers on a bed of potatoes. I had sourdough bread which was tasty and nicely toasted. Definitely recommended if you want something delicious and fulfilling....and they also have a full menu for lunch and what looks like a nice variety of milkshakes too. My lovely wife and I enjoyed a lowkey dinner at Stella's Diner on a pleasant Saturday evening in Lakeview. Yes this place is known more as a breakfast joint, but the massive menu has a full range of food options that should satisfy most tastes. The interior is pretty big, so noooobody was in the "back" room during dinnertime, but I imagine it's bustling during earlier mealtimes. As it was, the main room was fairly busy with dine-in customers as well as takeaway orders during our visit. Service was pleasant and efficient too. My order of Mom's Meatloaf was good, but the star of the show for me was the bowl of soup that came with the meal. The Sweet & Sour Cabbage soup was practically a meal in itself, with a tangy flavor reminiscent of soups I've enjoyed at a Polish buffet. The slices of meatloaf came with veggies, and I asked for hash brown-style potatoes to round out a solid meal. My love enjoyed her BLT burger topped with fried avocado wedges, now that's a nice touch. Her burger plate was rounded out with fries, cup of slaw and pickle spear. All in all, our meal at Stella's Diner was not too shabby. read more

Update: A tiny grilled cheese sandwich with avocado and tomato, and a glass of Coke Zero, now costs $27.00 with taxes and tip!! (Sides were a tiny cup of cole slaw and a tiny cup of sliced bananas and strawberries.) I know all about food inflation, but that's simply unacceptable. The wait staff is friendly, and it's not their fault, but the cooks seem to get the orders wrong a lot. On my first try, they gave me a grilled cheese with avocado and forgot the tomato. When I pointed this out, the cook simply peeled back the tiny sandwich and added some sad looking cold tomato slices. Ridiculous. I explained to the server (again, not her fault) that the flavor comes from the tomato being grilled WITH the sandwich. Never going back to this place. read more

My go-to diner in lakeview! They have everything a diner can offer, and they don't use too much grease in their cooking. The ingredients are always fresh and their menu can accommodate many different tastes. It is always busy, but with the attentive service a table will usually open within 20 minutes of arrival. Sometimes it does take a while for someone to pour us water after sitting down as it does get so busy, but the food is amazing and it is a nice local spot. read more

Been here a couple of times over the last 3 years that I've lived in Lakeview, and the food has always been very bland and unimpressive. Last time I visited, a live roach ran across the back of our booth... come to find out they were shut down a few weeks later because of a roach infestation (and many health/maintenance violations), and their other business, The Bagel Restaurant, was shut down for the exact same (50 live roaches reported during inspection). Disgusting. Will not be returning to either of these places. read more

Closer to 3.5 stars than 3 but nonetheless felt like pretty typical diner fare. Prices are pretty competitive and I did really enjoy the bustling ambiance here. I ordered the country style Benedict and my wife got the spinach/feta omelette. The Benny was okay; eggs were a bit overdone so not as runny as I would like. The sausage gravy was watery and overall didn't really impart a ton of flavor. Which is a shame because the hash browns are basically devoid of seasoning. The best part was definitely the generous helping of country style ham, which had great texture and brought the smokiness and savoriness this dish needed. I tried the omelette but also felt pretty meh about it; had to jazz it up with a lot of hot sauce. I would probably come back and try some other items but paying your bill also annoyed us as you pay on a Square reader so you don't get a physical copy of your bill till after. We didn't know there was a service charge and then the tip was calculated post-tax and post-service charge so the total ended up being inconceivably high for two entrees and coffee. I might come back to try the egg skillets but otherwise would rather try other diners. read more

I love Stella's. I used to eat here on a weekly basis when I lived nearby. The service is always top notch, the food is delicious and the restaurant's atmosphere is great. Today I stopped in for lunch and got the buffalo chicken salad. It was served within 10 minutes and had a very generous helping of chicken. The others in my party got breakfast dishes (one omelette and the other scrambled eggs) and the portions were huge and looked delicious. Additionally, the waitress came by several times to ensure our waters were full and ask if we needed anything. Overall, great dining experience. I can't recommend Stella's highly enough. read more

I came here with two of my friends for my 19th birthday celebration. Not only was the service and food PERFECT, but the staff was unbelievably kind and joined us in our little 'Happy Birthday' song completely unprompted. We couldn't stop laughing and we had the best time ever. We were going a little late, and we didn't notice they were closing until we walked outside and they turned the lights off. Stella's Diner truly screams old school diner. I went there this morning for the first time and thought it was a great breakfast experience. The service was incredible and attentive. The food is your typical breakfast skillet- nothing ground breaking but still delicious. Portion sizes were also pretty good. I wish Yelp allowed 0.5 ratings because I'd give them a 3.5/5 because they were good but nothing about it stood out to where I'd go again. This place is old and worn, but gives you a real sense of nostalgia. A true Chicago diner. Filled with regulars dressed in well worn Bears attire talking sports and many young adults looking like they're nursing hangovers. lol I listened in on glassy eyed college kids talking about their Bumble hookups while I ate my breakfast. It seemed fitting. Lol The menu is very old school. Skillets, omelettes, hash browns etc.. You're not going to get trendy menu options, but that's not meant as a negative. I enjoy old diners sometimes. You can schlep in in your sweats and not feel the need to impress. I had a chorizo skillet. Didn't love the jarred jalapeños, but the chorizo wasn't overly greasy which was a win by itself. -I've had some really greasy ones in other diners. Service was good. Friendly. I'd never go out of my way to eat here, but if I lived in the neighborhood I might show up if I wanted a very casual sit-down breakfast. Grabbed a Butterfinger shake on my way out.
