This place was not as expected. We walked into an empty, kinda dirty, and smelly restaurant. We had very low expectations in all honesty. We decided to stop here based on other reviews while driving through. I had order the original cheeseburger and onion rings. The burger was good. Bun was nice and soft. It didn't fall all over the place. But it reminded me of how Sonic used to be with their burgers. Overall it's a good burger. The onion rings however are AMAZING! Not overdone not under. Not squishy. Just perfect!! That's why I am giving it 4 stars. The onion rings won me over! My husband had chili cheese fries and he said they were really good. That they reminded him of a place back where he grew up. My kids had a burger and a hot dog. Both of them loved the French fries. Walked in to no greeting, no acknowledgement at all. Stood at the counter for about 6 minutes and still hadn't been acknowledged. NOT HAPPY. I am a local that frequents Dave's because it's close by and, obviously, convenient. Until tonight my biggest complaint has been the way the chairs screech across the dining room floor. Tonight I was served a hamburger with a patty that was not cooked completely. When I brought it to the attention of the staff, I was quickly told what I should have done differently in the situation. Seriously!? For a restaurant that has been around for many years and whose primary menu item is a hamburger, this should not happen. I'm even more upset that my son may have also received a partially uncooked burger and may have eaten it without noticing. My family tries very hard to support local businesses, especially these days, for obvious reasons, but it will be a long time before I return to Dave's Burger Barn. read more

Be prepared for a *long* wait, but very quality food! Solid double burger with 1/3 pound patties that hit the spot. Amazing meaty flavor complemented with great fries. Had a touch of sugar to give a savory sweet taste. Did not opt for the milkshake, but they did look good. waited over twenty minutes for my food after I ordered, the kitchen seemed to be smaller with few operating, and every regular that had already called in seemed to get priority. We stopped in Waco on our way down from Dallas to San Antonio. It's Cinco de Mayo but we already had Mexican food plans for the rest of the weekend in San Antonio so we decided to turn to Yelp for perhaps a sandwich or burger lunch place that the locals like in this area. Daves is kind of in the middle of a neighborhood, but close to the highways and had great reviews so we stopped. You order from the counter and take a number. We noticed right away the zipper ripper challenge wall of fame and wall of shame. It was pretty cool to see all of the contestants in the past. I ordered a cheese burger, added avacado for a buck, fries and a vanilla milk shake. The hubs got the jalapeño cheese burger, added avacado and bacon, with onion rings and a Dr Pepper. I'm glad we got there right when it opened because the place filled up quick with people who seemed to be locals on their lunch breaks.. it took about 10 minutes for our food to come out and we couldn't be happier with how they came out. They were fresh, juicy, and all of the veggies were fresh. The fries were different with the sugar and salt on them but that didn't stop us from eating them all. In fact I'll probably add sugar to my fries from now on at home hoping for the same effect on my tastebuds. The onion rings are where it's at though. They were golden, crunchy, flaky, and the onion melted in your mouth. A+ on the onion rings. The reason for four stars is that my milk snake eventually came out about 5 minutes after we finished our food... I enjoyed it on the rest of our road trip (it was hand spun with blue bell vanilla) but I would have enjoyed it with my burger more. Bottom line: Dave's makes one hell of a good burger. Do not pass on the onion rings. Don't expect quickness with how busy they get though. Four stars. read more

I fell for the reviews... but no .. Nope.. never again. The food is not good. The fries taste burnt the burger was dry and the cheese on the burger tasted old or something. They do have a huge TV with sports on so, if cleanliness and taste aren't high on your list... then you will probably like it. I found dead bugs, trash everywhere and ketchup dispenser with congealed ketchup stuck the the dirty spout.. It's Waco, so my standards are already pretty low but ... yuck. I didn't get a shake but my sister in law said it was good. And the Bacon on the burger was pretty good, to be fair. read more

My dad who is a very picky eater came here with us and ordered the chili cheese dog. He said it was one of the best he ever had. After the cashier took his order he went back to the kitchen to make sure they got it just right then asked my dad how he liked it. He was a super nice guy! My husband and I opted for burgers. I enjoyed mine quite a bit. If compared to someone else, it is more of a mom-n-pop whataburger styled burger. I wasn't too fond of the sweet potato fries but everything else was top notch. Finally, the place was spotless from the tables to the bathroom. Which is why I went ahead and went with the 5 stars. If you're from Waco or driving through, give it a try! It's not too far off the highway and won't break the bank. read more

Great burger. this place is a bit of a hole in the wall. The decor really isn't anything great. Seating areas kind of stinks but the food and ice cream was great! To top it off there is a really nice park right next door so if you have some kiddos with you that need to burn some energy you can simply walk a few hundred feet and let them play. The epitome of all hole-in-the-wall Waco burger joints, but the best burger I have had to date from anywhere in Waco. BONUS: The burgers are decently priced! They have chicken (grilled or fried) options as well and some other sandwich choices. I'd suggest going at a non-lunch rush time because there are literally 3 or 4 tables inside this tiny place and the only other options are to-go orders or eating outside on one of 4 picnic tables. Great burger, great fries, really good milkshake. Love it all. I don't usually like the salt and sugar seasoning on my fries(usually hate it), but they do it right. Just a hint of sweet, I'm a new fan. Burger was juicy not greasy, not an easy feat. GOOD JOB DAVE, I'll be back if I'm in the area again. Found this little place on the road trip to Austin last weekend. Thanks Yelp for helping us find this. The burgers were really good (one fried chicken sandwich, one burger, one grilled chicken). Lots of options. We ordered a side of fries, potato fries and onion rings. I have to say these were probably the best onion rings I've had in a long time. Not sure how they do it, but onion actually breaks where you bite it off (not like others where it just pulls out of the batter). The batter was really good and crispy, without being burned. The atmosphere is a little basic, but I think it adds to the diner style environment. Staff were friendly, which is always a nice thing. Saw the option to eat their monster burger (you have 12 minutes), and even the teenager with us thought it was a little too much to try :-) Definitely an artery clogger if you take the challenge. read more

OK I am a Burger Guy. This place is now on my top places for a burger. HUGE burgers. We left satisfied for sure. Let me address some things others have said. SERVICE, well we stepped right up, got our order in and they brought our food out when it was ready. There is not a waitress at your table so complaining about service here can be a little silly. You refill your own drinks at a machine and place the orders at the counter. FRIES - they were not soggy. Good fries but not the best we have ever had. I had Onion rings to and they were very good. I will visit it again for sure. IMO - Better that the local fav Douoble R in Waco. read more
