I took my water damaged hard drive to Data Recovery Solutions based on a recommendation from a trusted adviser. This individual informed me that the price for data recovery would be steep, but that I wouldn't get charged unless the data was recovered. When I dropped off my hard drive, I was told there was a $95 deposit that I wouldn't be charged for initially, but it would go toward the full price, a quote I would receive upon diagnosing the situation. They kept my hard drive for about 2-3 business days and then called to inform me that the data was unrecoverable. When I went to pick up the drive, I was given a receipt for $95, which I was slightly confused about. I then called them later in the day after speaking with someone who wanted to see the drive. I then learned that the sticker with the serial and model number was missing. I was told that once the sticker is removed, the warranty is voided, which doesn't help if parts need to be ordered. I was told that the sticker was damaged in the opening process, but that the model and serial number were both on the receipt. In any case, I then inquired about the $95 fee to get clarification, and told the gentleman on the phone that I was told by the person who referred me that I wouldn't get charged if the data wasn't recoverable. He said I had been misinformed. I can understand wanting to be compensated for one's time, but $95 is kinda steep for a diagnostic fee, especially just to tell someone nothing can be done. I chalk it all up to a lesson learned. I would like to believe that the technicians did due diligence in trying to recover my data. In having done more research since that experience, I discovered that there are data recovery companies that abide by a "no data, no charge" policy, so I won't be doing business with Data Recovery Solutions in the future. read more
