I've been to Dat Jerk plenty of times, but this was my first time at this location last night. The establishment was very clean. The two ladies who served me were polite, friendly, and welcoming. I arrived about 30 minutes before closing, and they still had smiles on their faces -- which I really appreciated. I tried the brown stew chicken and potato salad for the first time... and OMG. The chicken was tender or what that saying now ? It was Tendernism! lol So flavorful and cooked perfectly. The coco bread, as always, was a 10/10. My 6-year-old daughter had the jerk salmon with mac and fries, and she ate everything in one sitting -- that says a lot! The portion sizes were great. I really enjoyed the food I got from here. I ordered the curry chicken with rice and peas and cabbage. The portion is very large, but I was ever hungry so I ate it all in one sitting. I stop in here every once in a while as it's close to my office. Service is always good. They are friendly and efficient. The food itself is okay. I'm sure most would agree that it's far from traditional Jamaican food. Some of the dishes are a bit salty. The sides are decent. First time at this location and good experience. Ordered meatloaf roti with all the toppings and a jerk chicken patty. The patty was pretty good, a little kick, and nice crust. Would have been nice to have more filling, but still satisfied my craving. Roti was good too, although the onions really were kinda pungent and really took over each bite. I loved the brown spicy and sweet sauce (not sure which one) and should have gotten another container to offset the onions and because it was so tasty. In the past week I've been to this location once in the afternoon. Recently late evening before closing. Each time nothing but refreshing and professional customer service from the staff. I've had some Jamaican cuisine but certainly not enough. I found this Maryland chain on Yelp and decided to give it a try! They were pretty busy but the service was excellent! I got the jerk chicken, rice and peas and veggie mix. The meal was fantastic. Flavors are rich and delicious. The chicken was so moist and rice well seasoned. I liked the soda choices to cream soda, pineapple and most all in the fountain. The restaurant was clean however the ice machine was empty, hard to get utensils, and napkins. I didn't have my hopes high because I've tried so many restaurants searching for true Caribbean food and my top two were " Hummingbird" and " Jerk at Nite". Other than that.... I'll pass. But this place is not it. I would give it a one star, but the customer service is really really good. They know how to move, keep fresh food coming & Handle in-store and pick up orders as well. So compliments to them. The jerk chicken is bad. It's more like a sweet honey chicken. Great size, but has horrible taste. My advice is to get a bunch of " rude boy jerk sauce" on the side and drown your chicken in that. Cause the chicken itself ain't doing it. I only eat one and give the other piece away. The rice and peas were cooked well. Mac & Cheese was regular. I poured " island BBQ" sauce all over cause the sides were boring. That Island BBQ is amazing tho. Glad I got it out of the way. I've been waiting for this place to open and I'm glad they did. Since I stopped eating meat my straight go to was the salmon. The woman upfront was very helpful and patient. The place was very clean and the music was on theme. The salmon was so flavorful and not over cooked. I loved the sweet and jerk contrast. The cabbage was cooked nicely and the sauce from the salmon tasted well with it too. The plantain was a little overcooked. Some of them were a little dry which was disappointing. I stopped at this DJ location on my way down from Baltimore to Va last night and this was by far THE WORST experience for me and my family. I've been to the ones in both Waldorf and Glenarden several times and had excellent food quality and service. This location is in a weird spot next to a Dunkin drive thru so parking is cramped. Walk in, greeted friendly, greet back, I order my food - oxtails plates and a stew chicken day thank you and go to pay. When I arrive home we open our plates - they did not give ANY GRAVY .... Never ever have I had the experience where they don't put even a little gravy on the oxtails and rice and peas? That's the worst of it because after a very long day and even longer drive after to arrive home and the food be dry?!? Even the stew chicken which the word stew is in the name!!?? The oxtails were not good either - I don't know if they were having a bad day or bad batch - but they were not hitting at all. Second worse was the young person at the register so concerned with chatting and upselling he didn't pay attention to making sure the right items were on the right ticket. We were on a road trip and decided to stop here before we hit 95. It was early afternoon, not crowded whatsoever. The space was clean and tidy, playlist on point. The restroom was also clean, just about spotless! We were greeted almost immediately upon walking in and were able to quickly get our order in. The options are plenty and all seem desirable. We both opted for the oxtail, rice & peas, and cabbage entree. We also got the coco bread, pineapple soda, and a side of Mac. The Mac, rice & peas, and coco bread were the stars of our meal whereas the oxtail and cabbage fell a little short. The coco bread was just so nostalgic from my college days and every bite was so delicious. The rice & peas were also tasty, well cooked and perfectly seasoned. The Mac & cheese was goey and creamy HOWEVER... there was PLASTIC in my dish which completely was a bummer and one of the reasons I had to take away a star. When I notified the young lady she apologized and took the plastic-- and didn't give me any further recourse at first. So I just went back and grabbed my entire Mac and came back to the counter to give her the whole thing and that's when she offered to replace the side. I was torn about wanting to get more Mac and did, but now that I think about it I should've opted for something else since arguably that entire pan was/is tainted. The oxtails and its gravy and cabbage did not have that punch of flavor and was borderline bland BUT they were still palatable-- just underwhelming seasoned if you will. The oxtail weren't incredibly tinder fall off the bone but they absolutely weren't tough either and I was still pleased (he had had better). The cabbage had corn in it which was a pleasant surprise and a first for me. All in all, I would give this place another go. This was my first visit to the Landsdowne location. I tried the Oxtails Bowl with plantains and Stir Fry Vegetables. The portions were small for $21. The food was ok. The plantains were too burnt. I also ordered the Jerk Meatloaf bowl with Rice and Peas and Vegetarian Stew Peas. The food in this bowl was great. I ordered desserts, Pina Colada cake and Apple Caramel Rum Cake. The cakes had a great taste but appeared to be undercooked. I tried several bottled drinks. They were great but pricey, $3.40 a bottle, Ouch!!! I came here for lunch on a Saturday right after they opened. The place was pretty empty but it is new so word probably hasn't gotten out yet. My first impressions are that it is similar to a chipotle in terms of feel. It doesn't give a Caribbean restaurant vibe and that's a good and bad thing. It's good because you don't get the common misfortunes of dining at a Caribbean carry out, (rudeness, running out of food, skimpy portions, etc.). You get a clean environment and you get in and out or you can stop for a quick meal without being berated by auntie. You won't get an authentic Caribbean vibe though. It feels like a chipotle as in you'll pick your bowl or wrap, pick what goes inside and they will send you on your way. The food was great. Well seasoned and not overly hot for no reason. Chicken was fall off the bone, and the rice was not neglected. I had the plantain (plan-ten, not plan-tain) as well and enjoyed that. I wanted to check dat place out for a year now. My wife had said she did buy some jerk chicken when the restaurant opened. She did not have any because my son ate it all and did not leave her some. My son is very picky does not eat anybodies jerk but said it was good so I have to try it out. I stop by during lunch hour and it was not busy. When I was in the parking lot I did hear Island music coming from the restaurant I was thinking, I may be in business. The place I found was big and functional. I noted the environment that jumped out the carribean. I looked at the overhead menu board that was straight forward and explained the pricing structure from a meal to just a la carte. I decided on the Curry Chicken bowl with rice and peas. Also a side salad and a glass of water. Ordering was fast and the food prep was quick. They have a cafeteria style service so you don't have to wait long to get your service and your food. Once you get your food you have the option of takeaway or dine in restaurant. I chose to dine in since I was not in a hurry. The curry chicken was very good. Warm and very delicious. Full of flavor and the only criticism was that I felt it had a pinch more salt but it may be me because i don't add a lot of salt to my food but I did find it a little more salty than in other restaurants where I have ordered the same dish. The peas and rice were also very good and the salad I chose an island ranch dressing that was slightly spicy with a little heat but was very good. I would get that dressing again. I think it was home made. The meal was very delicious and I enjoyed the vibes with the Island music. I did find the location very clean as well as the bathrooms, a plus. All in all, I have mixed emotions. Because my favorite Jamaican restaurant is located 45 minutes south on this same road while I can drive only 10 minutes here and get my curry on and be assured to get a good level of quality meal here is also a plus to me, I might not have to drive the distance again. Dat Jerk is a fast casual Carribran Restaurant, meaning you won't get a server that seats you and takes your order, it's like Chipotle, you pick a protein, your sides, some sauces, and you're on your way. I opted for a brown strew chicken plate, on a bed of rice and beans with some plantains on the side. I am a big dude who can eat, and the portion size was extremely generous. For $14 and some change I had what could probably comfortably feed two people. Value is great. Taste wise it was delicious and savory as well. The plantains were cooked enough to still have some bite to them but were soft and potato-like. The rice was flavorful but acted as a great vessel to transport the rich chicken. The game changer was the island ranch dressing which elevated everything as it provided a creamy accent to everything. I also had to try a beef patty, which was great. They were an elevated version of the patties you can cop at corner stores. The island ranch also kicked the patty up a notch. For less than $20 I was beyond stuffed, and I'm eager to return to try the Jerk Pork, the Mac N Cheese, or honestly everything. At a similar price point to chipotle these days, it's no contest that if you're craving something new - head on down to Dat Jerk. read more

It is clean and well organized and they have booth seating as well as seating by the window. There's no table service. You go up and order your food on one end and pay for it on the other like Chipotle. They have the typical Caribbean food your use to like curry chicken, brown, stew chicken, jerk (of course) pork and chicken as well as one of my favs, oxtails. I chose the oxtail bowl. With a bowl you can choose 2 sides and I got the rice and beans with the cabbage. The oxtails were delicious and tender just like I'm use to. The rice and beans were also on point. I asked for some oxtail gravy on it and that set it off nicely. I should have asked for it to be poured over the cabbage too because though it was cooked perfectly, it lacked flavor. My cousin had the jerked pork. She said it was really dry and after tasting my oxtails said she should have gotten that. Kay, the young lady who had prepared our food was circulating the dining area and checking on customers. When she got to our table and asked how everything was my cousin commented on the dryness of the pork. Kay asked if she wanted anything else and actually went and got her some more freshly made pork . Although it was better once the jerk sauce was poured over it, it still was on the dry side. However, this was an unexpected surprise to have Kay inquire about our dining experience. This was definitely customer service that I am not used to in restaurants that do not have table service. I love that she did this and tried to make it right. This alone will have me coming back if I'm in the area. Customer service is so important to your total experience in a restaurant. Anyway, I wanted sorrel, which they had in a bottle. I prefer it freshly made so I passed on that. The prices were comparable to other places. My meal was around $20. This reminds me of chipotle but for Jamaican food lol. Not really authentic but not bad. I got the tropical chicken, rice and peas, and plantains. The chicken was delicious! Perfectly cooked and seasoned. The plantains were just ok. They weren't cooked evenly. Some were perfect, others were undercooked. And the rice and peas were just alright. I called ahead to order (and paid upfront over the phone) and they said 10 minutes, but when we got there about 20 minutes later they hadn't started boxing up our order.
