This low key bbq joint was a delight. The garlic fries are especially tasty. The two of us shared a sampler platter. Everything was good. The meats were nice and smokey. The sauce is available at the table, so you can sauce it to your liking. I was really impressed how patient the owner was on the phone with a customer. The customer called and it almost seemed like they had no idea what a bbq place serves. The owner took his time to describe different items and took the customer's order. He didn't sigh deeply or roll his eyes. He was genuinely nice on the phone and in person. The mac and cheese had a nice topping of bacon bits. The mac and cheese itself is pretty basic. It's more of a processed cheese velveeta-like dish. The meats were a tiny bit dry, but I think if I had ordered a sandwich with the pulled pork or whatever - it would have been juicier. read more

Came here while visiting Modesto on a shopping excursion. It's located a little bit away from the busy area of Modesto aka the mall area. Parking was somewhat limited. We couldn't decide on what we wanted to eat so we ended up getting the sampler. It came with three meats, garlic bread, and two sides. We opted for the tritip, ribs, and pulled pork with Mac & cheese and garlic fries. Also added onion rings cause I'm fat. Everything was amazing!!! I asked for a spicier bbq sauce and it was delicious also. For two people we left home with enough for another meal. Staff was friendly and helpful with suggestions. This place isn't open to the public, order by phone or a small booth out front blocking the door. No flavor, Dry, SALTY and way over priced. I don't recommend any of it. My husband tried the 3 meat platter with brisket, ribs(horrible after taste) and tried tip, with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. None of it was good or fresh. Sunday, 1Nov2020, I had a heart attack and 45 minutes after calling 911 I was being wheeled into the OR for the first of two stents to be implanted into my coronary arteries. My right RCA was 100% blocked and my LCA was 80% blocked. Last night stopped at Dan's to celebrate still being alive. I ordered the half rack of ribs as a celebratory meal. They were easily the best ribs I've ever eaten! I was stripping meat off the bone, licking the sauce off my fingers and reaching for the next rib while chewing the first delightful mouthful. I usually have a tri tip sandwich but after last night it's going to be ribs, ribs and more ribs. Fortunately I live a block away and can indulge whenever I want. I can only speak for myself, so I actually enjoyed my burger very much until I tasted the processed cheese slices and that's when it went south. As a suggestion, it's easier for me if cheese comes as an option but especially *NOT* Kraft processed cheese slices. The burger started to be really good, but as soon as the artificial flavors and oils hit my mouth it coats my taste buds and makes (what others have even commented on) the food have a super horrible aftertaste. As an extreme example it's like taking a bite of petroleum jelly and then a bite of food, for me it's exactly like that though. Please add real cheeses to your menu and *only* as an option. How anyone can stomach that processed vegetable oil is really a mystery to me. read more

What happened! Ordered a hamburger to go and was given a hamburger that had been sitting for a while. It was already made came cold with wilted lettuce, and the mustard and mayonnaise had already sunk into the bun which made the bun soggy. It tasted terrible. I'm shocked I Had not eaten anything from this establishment in a while, so things have really changed and I would not recommend buying anything there. read more

Now open on Sunday, I went after church. Placed order at counter, food was delivered, came by once to see if everything was OK. The atmosphere was pretty basic, only a few tables. I had the rib plate with Mac and cheese. Ribs were tasty and very tender. Mac and cheese was good but pretty runny. We also had brisket plate with mashed potatoes. Found this on line and hesitated to try it. I have had little success in finding a good bbq restaurant in the valley. My wife convinced me to go. Wow, am I glad I did. The place is in a small strip mall and not expressive from the outside. Inside is small and family oriented. The owners were outstanding folks. I ordered a brisket sandwich with garlic fries. I have never had a sandwich so flavorful and moist. My wife ordered ribs and they were to die for. Meat was perfectly prepared and some of the best I've had. I am a retired barbecue caterer with twenty plus years experience. I am very opinionated and a tough critic. This place deserves every star I gave it. I will be back soon. read more

Went to this place with high expectations. My son knows that I love tri tip and I also cook a mean trip. So of course I ordered the tri tip sandwich ‍my son even reccomend that I order it on garlic bread,that didn't help the sandwich. First off when you order a tri tip sandwich anywhere and if its cooked right they will not drown it in sauce,simply because the meat is the star not the sauce. Looking for ribs for dinner without the time to create them ourselves, so we decided to give these guys a shot. We ordered the Family Pack- full rack of ribs +3 sides and garlic toast. Ribs were OK-well cooked and tender. But, and this is hard because taste is so individual, we weren't big fans of the sauce. I like it sweeter- he likes it hotter. This sauce is not sweet and it's not hot. Sides were good, but small for a "family". The mac n cheese is a standout- cheesy and yummy. The garlic toast was a surprise great addition. First time visiting this location with the hubby and it wasn't the best experience. The cook had lost our order and we waited for about half an hour for our food. After 30 minutes they realized that we have been sitting at our table waiting for our food after several people had left the restaurant who came after we did. We were told that the cook was new. The food was good and they were very apologetic about our bad experience. I understand that this is a mom and pop restaurant but they should've provided some sort of food like fries as an appetizer while we wait for our late order. Will we return here? WOW great mom and pop shop !!!! First time trying this place honestly was above my expectations. I ordered the pork sandwich and steak fries it was really good!!! Meat was tender and juicy! Not over sauced or under sauced. Totally nailed it!! Food was hot, and cooked to perfection! Also after a small conversation, I'm assuming it was the owner that came out and brought my food to my car because they are still preparing to re-open after covid shut down and inside isn't open yet (but he said soon). I thought it was really kind he brought it out to my car instead of me just sitting there (bc it was too hot outside!) looking forward to coming back! Called around 2 pm on a recent Saturday with a less than $100 family style order w/ribs that I wanted to pick up around 5 pm...which was just a bit before my family was having a smallish birthday party. The female on the phone said ribs weren't an option but asked if I could wait on hold while she spoke with the owner. I waited a short time and she came back on and said ribs were all dedicated for a catering order so they weren't an option. Ok...not a huge deal...only mildly disappointing but plenty of options to sub out. But wait, she then told me that a pick up any time later in the day was not an option. If I didn't come down to pick up my order as soon as they could prep it, they couldn't fill my order at all. And she said it without explanation with a very dismissive, take it or leave it attitude. I explained that I was having a family gathering and didn't want my order to sit for hours...and she didn't even respond. I then asked her if they just didn't want my business? Again, zero response...so I just hung up. They lost a customer for life with that interaction...or lack of interaction/engagement. read more

New prices was noticed when I got In restaurant which was like 2-4 bucks depending on what it was. I ordered the OMG which was pretty good the sauce was more on the sweet side versus spicy which I tend to lean towards. Ordered the sampler also had ribs, Tri tip and pulled pork. It too was okay the pulled pork was really good, Tri tip could have came in smaller pieces which would have made it easy for me to just throw some bread in the toaster and add it together. The ribs was okay only because what I mostly tasted was the dry rub and it was pretty dry for the meat. If added with the bbq sauce it makes it a lot better. My wife had the chicken sandwich was average everything is better with sauce though lol. An service wise hmmmmmm..... I'd say she was very very nice she gave me extra napkins for the extra 20 min wait. They're establishment is pretty consistent to busy at all times. Faster served if your dinning in versus doing take out unless you order less maybe. I only said that cause I ordered 30 mins in advance then two other customers that ordered after was served when I came back at stated time. Then was told to wait 20 mins more. With the price and time waited the food is okay this would most likely be my first and last. The ambiance was quite , small establishment, neighborhood environment feel for me. Sadly, I would not recommend. None Of the BBQ tasted as if it was BBQed, or smoked. Tasted like the ribs, chicken and "brisket" were cooked in an oven at best. I don't even think the brisket was brisket. I think it was cheap beef that was roasted in the oven and drowned in bbq sauce. I spent 30 dollars on a sampler platter and did not even eat it, it was that bad. Just an FYI the charge .50 cents for a cup of water as well. Don't waste your money, go some place else! read more

This was one of the best burgers I've had. They hand press their patty so I was able to get a smaller size as my request. The meat was not the pre-formed chewy meat you sometimes get at other restaurants. The buns were grilled. It really was a tasty burger. The garlic fries were great too. read more

Ate dinner here tonite. Ordered the sampler platter. I got 2 baby back ribs, thinly sliced tri-tip and a good size helping of pulled/chopped pork. I ordered sauce on the side. The tri-tip had a nice smoke ring, had good flavor and very tender! The ribs were very tender as well, fully rendered and very good! The pulled pork was pretty flavorless without some sauce but very tender and lean! The BBQ sauce was tasty! I also got two sides: The traditional cole slaw had a nice apple taste to it with the right mix of sweet and tart! The mac and cheese was cheese, creamy and quite good. It was topped with real bacon bits. This was a great meal and I'll definitely be back to try some other items! read more

As I now travel for work, I find myself seeking out local spots to have a good meal. I came across this place by means of yelp and found the food to be well worth a review. I've been here 2 times and have committed to having the tri-tip sandwich combo with a Barq's root beer when I am in the Modesto area. It's definitely a local joint. Don't expect a grand building, fancy tables or crisply adorned wait staff upon arrival. Parking can be a challenge as the location is in an older strip mall. Note, there's additional parking that no one seems to take advantage of to the immediate left of the eatery. I've been able to find a spot there on each of my visits. Parking in front of the entry next to the other establishments in the little plaza will be stacked with short term parkers. This review is based on the food and the personal attention I received. I walked into Dan's BBQ as it was beginning to get busy. I observed people walking in and picking up food to go. You know the food's great when people are calling in advance for it. The proprietor personally took care of me. I made it a point to let him know that I am establishing myself as a regular patron because this tri tip sandwich is a level 10 on the flavor and texture scale. He told me his story on how the restaurant came about. I'll leave that for you to learn when you visit. It's a cool story. The portions are not excessive nor leaving a desire for more. The servings are "just right" like the last bowl of porridge in the Goldilocks story. Your choice of beverages there will stem from the line of Coca Cola products. Seating is plentiful. The feel of the place is as if I were eating at a place my cousin opened up. You walk in wanting to support the local guy and after having the food, you'll be compelled to.
