Last Sunday while dining with a relative, I was made aware of a place called Backwoods Burgers located in Oakdale, CA. As this person knew what kinds of foods I liked, and had just dined there, it went to the top of my "let's go" list. As I happened, today my wife had the day off so away we went. Wow is all I can start with. From the moment another held the door for us, to the friendly greeting and smile of the young lady who waited on us at the counter to the decor and design inside and out, we immediately loved it. We found what we needed on the simple menu, accommodations from the git go, to even having a knife to cut our burgers in have (we rarely eat the whole thing right away). SOLID experience all around. Two burgers, sweet potato fries, fried zucchini and two ice teas was our meal. The burgers were tasty, the sides great, the staff on point start to finish, Ashley was our server and did an OUTSTANDING job all the way. We even had another customer hold the door on the way out. When I went to take a picture as we left, another fellow stopped so as not to walk into my shot. Wow again. If you love burgers, and are nearby, you need to try these folks' fare. I always drive by here and was curious to go! They have little lights outside of their building which you can't miss going down Oakdale street! I had always wanted to try it because it looked so inviting and I loved a good cheeseburger. We came with a party of 8 for my twin cousins birthdays and they were EXTREMELY nice and accommodating even though they do not take reservations they really helped us out to big tables together to include everyone and one of the servers with the long braid, forgot her name but gosh she was the SWEETEST and I love chatting with her! 10/10 service!! The food was absolutely delicious I noticed on the menu they sure has some GOOD lookin sandwiches but since it was my first time dining there, an their known for their burgers, I got the smashed cheeseburger which was SO good the cheese was delicately melted to perfection, I couldn't notice my cousin got the "mac and cheese burger" interesting choice but she had been there many times and swore on oh! Now the garlic fries and ranch? Those were spectacular! They even come out and sing happy birthday with banana pudding but we brought our own cake beverage it was such a big party. All and all it was DEElicious and I'd love to return to try their pesto chicken sandwich this place was perfection and made my cousins birthday dinner totally perfect!!! read more

Great burgers at good prices. I tried a couple different ones. The bbq one was probably my favorite. The fries are also very delicious. Bread pudding a bit of a let down. Seems like store bought packets are used. This place has a western feel to it. There's animal skin on the walls for decor. It's a walk up to order type of situation but the staff came around and asked if everything was good. All employees were super friendly. read more

We stopped at this burger place for lunch while visiting the area because they have good reviews on yelp. They have craft burgers with lots of flavors and options at a really good price. We also loved that they offer a variety of sides -- not just regular fries, but different kinds of fries and hush puppies. We really loved the hush puppies -- crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and so tasty! I ordered the Tumbleweed Burger, which had good flavor overall, but it only had a very small dollop of barbecue sauce. I ended up asking for extra on the side, which made it much better. The onion rings were not your typical salty, crispy fried kind; instead, they had an interesting, different breaded coating. While they weren't what I expected, they were actually pretty good for what they were -- just lacking in seasoning. The dining environment is casual and welcoming, and I like that you order at the register -- it keeps things simple and quick. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Plus, they have a beer with great beers on tap. Overall, this place is worth checking out for a solid burger at a great price. read more

Been here a few times and usually really enjoy the food. The burgers are excellent -- juicy, flavorful, and cooked just right. Today, I decided to switch it up and try the steak sandwich. It came as a square steak on a round roll with all the fixings. Unfortunately, the steak was on the thin side, so most of what I tasted was the bun and toppings rather than the meat itself. I also ordered the large garlic fries -- tasty, but they could have used a little more garlic punch. My 805 beer, however, was ice cold and refreshing, which definitely hit the spot. Plenty of seating at 12:30pm and the service is always top notch. This is the first time the food has felt a bit underwhelming here, but I'll absolutely be back -- next time for one of those great burgers. read more

Oh my goodness everything on the menu looked amazing. It's always great to go out to eat with a friend because you get to try multiple things a split them! We went with the mac and cheese burger, the mango habanero salad, side of linguica baked beans and side of mac n cheese. Not 1 complaint out of me at all. The burger was perfectly cooked, the salad man, that was my favorite part of the meal, I think however, a scoop of beans and a scoop of mac n cheese was making my mouth very happy. Pepsi products, brewed tea but not sweet, just the pink packets and regular sugar. Would have taken it up a notch if they had sweet tea but definitely a place to come to. read more

Service was good, cool looking place, but food was disappointing. Let's start with the good. Despite a long line for dinner they moved through the line at a decent pace and did a good job of getting food out. Place is nice casual hang out spot with plenty of room. The bad, burgers looked delicious...however they were way over cooked. As a burger place I expected a lot more and maybe should of asked for the burger to be cooked a particular way, or at very minimum ask how we want it done or warn. Even pulled pork in Big Kahunna and Bacon in tumbleweed was dry and chewy. Almost like they used left over or forgot about it cooking. Really wanted to love it and was just disappointed. Fries were fine, but idk what that ranch with it was...super thick and didn't care for its taste. Still give it 4 because I can see potential, and maybe the sheer number of people made them mess up. We took my son-in-law here yesterday for his birthday. This was his choice, and we were all for it because we've all been here before and had excellent, delicious food and great, awesome service. Our food came out fast, which was fine with us, and everything was perfect, always consistent. Delicious! OMG, the staff is super nice and friendly. Also, the one gal with really pretty eyes kept checking on us to see if we needed anything. This place is like an old town, old school spot. I know it's definitely our spot. The onion rings are awesome, zucchini fries are delicious, the sweet potato fries are awesome, and of course the sandwiches and hamburgers. Everything is fresh, and they're always consistent. This was our 2nd time coming here. Each time everything was wonderful. From the front staff taking your order to those who bring you food - fantastic! It is popular so you have to be patient on placing your order, but they bring out your food pretty quickly. Tumbleweed burger - I devoured this. So many delicious flavors. I feel like such a nutter. I wrote this terrific review and posted it to the wrong restaurant. So now I've moved it here where it belongs and will remove it from the other restaurant. We needed lunch and Backwoods had what we needed. The Princess was riding with us, so we needed a place with outdoor seating that allowed dogs (shhhh, she doesn't know). They offer burgers, sandwiches, salads and plenty of sides. When we arrived, I sat outside with Princess while The Boss went inside to scout. Orders are placed at the counter; you get a tabletop number and any necessary drink cups. All set-ups and food are delivered to your table. She came back out to inform me and we began to peruse the menu on our phones. That's when Lauren came out like a superhero! She offered us paper menus, a bowl of water for the dog and to answer any questions that we might have. We ended up with: Tumbleweed Burger - 5 - Angus Burger, Pepper Jack Cheese, Hickory Smoke Bacon, Haystack Onion, Sweet BBQ Sauce and the standard Produce of Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion and Pickles. I got the pickles on the side. I rarely order burgers during a sit-down meal, but this one was perfect and hands down delicious. I could taste all the flavors even though it was a struggle to compress it enough to get top and bottom buns with everything in between into my mouth. The only think I didn't care for was that the onion ring on top of the burger was cold, unlike the half-order of onion rings that we also ordered. Southwest Salad - 5 - Please read the description on the photo of the menu. She said it was an excellent salad. Especially with the addition of some rare ribeye steak (which Princess helped with). 1/2-Order Fried Zucchini - 5 - I have a weakness for deep-fried veg. Wildfire charges $5 for the 1/2-order and $7 for a full. Thank goodness because the 1/2-orders were more than enough! 1/2-Order Onion Rings - 3 - These were okay but neither the crust nor the onion were strong in flavor. The inside of the restaurant was clean and spacious. There were two restrooms, I went into the one on the right and it appeared to be pretty clean as well. I would recommend that they add a spacer and remount the top of the soap dispenser, so it doesn't spin and cause more damage to the wall. My wife placed the order and said that everyone that she spoke to was excellent in enthusiasm and customer service. I only spoke to Lauren, and she was a champ. She checked with us several times to make sure that we were okay and weren't in want of anything. She was the one who offered a water bowl for our dog. She brought us to-go containers as we were winding down. So many businesses could learn excellent customer service skills from the people working today. Service with a smile and a twinkle in the eye makes for a very enjoyable meal and experience. read more

First impression 8/10. I give it a 8 because for those of us mamas there is no changing table in the bathroom to change your baby's diaper. They should definitely have one. If the owner is reading this review please update your bathroom and put one in... thank you. Other than that, The customer service is great! From the girl who took our order and the one that brought out our food. The atmosphere is chill vibes. The food was so delicious. The only thing when ordering here you have to order fries with your burger it doesn't come with fries so just a heads up to those coming here for the first time. The food is really good as are the drinks. We felt like the servers were very attentive. We got there when the students were there eating and was told to go to the left side for the "adult" line. I am probably one of the most loyal customers they have. I have been ordering multiple times a week probably since they first opened. I really love the food, the restaurant and the staff. They are all so friendly and remember faces. I love being a regular here. One time, I ordered online and they CALLED MY PHONE NUMBER because I usually order no avocado/produce on my Chicken Burger and I forgot this time- so they wanted to call and double check I didn't mess up when ordering. They said they saw my order and thought "She NEVER gets avocado on her burger." I mean I literally love Backwoods. They have the cutest area inside that is meant to look like a front porch. Burger and sandwich joint. I had the turkey burger which I asked to have on sour dough which they happily agreed to. It's was a nice sandwich, good flavor and quite large. My wife had cheese burger and it was pretty solid, her only complaint was the meat being more overdone than she likes and also not having that crumbly texture. Zucchini fries were excellent, actual thick pieces of zucchini. Fair pricing for the most part. Nice staff. Not the best burger ever but good enough for a stop on way to Yosemite. read more

First time here after passing by the place so often. I came during lunch time with some co-workers, but wasn't looking for a big burger. I ended up ordering the kid's sliders with my choice of Mac and cheese as my side. I will say for a kids meal, this is a lot. Two sliders with the mac being a big size. Heck, the drink was a decent size too. Like an adult size small cup. I enjoyed the pretzel buns. I thought they were warm, fluffy with a gentle touch of salt. My meat though, it tasted a little dry. Nothing that ketchup can't fix though. Sadly, my Mac tasted runny and bland. With that said, stick with fries. I do like that the Mac comes loaded with bacon bits and shredded cheese on top. I will definitely order something else next time. The service is friendly, and in terms of ambiance, the place appeared steady during lunch time. This place was so gross, cold onion rings, cheese sauce was chunky, and an unnatural orange color, burgers were dry, overcooked tasteless the only good thing going was the cold beer. Mentioned it to the waitress and the manager they didn't offer to comp the meal give us a discount or even remake it. They said that that cheese sauce was always like that which is concerning.
