Perhaps I came on the wrong day but the customer service was terrible. The person helping me basically made me feel like it was an inconvenience that I was even coming to the business. The burger and fries were fresh. I felt like the drink was small and overpriced. They also didn't have marinara sauce for their mozzarella sticks so I decided to order those from somewhere else. The fact that they didn't have marinara sauce and seemed perturbed by me asking was a huge red flag. Overall, the burger was basic but fresh. I could get the same elsewhere with better customer service. 2 stars is generous at this point. read more

Great burger and love the crinkle cut fries. Garlic burger was perfectly cooked and loaded with pickles, onions, lettuce and tomato. The bun is slathered with garlic but it's a gentle flavor not overpowering. They have table service even when you sit out on the patio (walk up window for to-go orders). There is a drive-thru and inside dining. The young lady who served us was polite, friendly, efficient and checked on us multiple times. Overall a great 2nd visit (failed to review after first visit). Awesome place to stop for any meal if you are cruising through Escalon on your way to wherever you may be heading. Sits right on Hwy 120, easy place to stop. Well done Hula staff! We stop here often when we come through Escalon I like this place however, our experienced yesterday was not pleasant. We waited over 30 minutes for our food which wasn't brought out together we ordered one breakfast and a side dish I politely inquired after the table next to us that arrived after we had ordered had gotten served four huge meals. The worst thing a waitress can do when you've been patiently waiting a long time and she finally brings you your order is to ask you if you if you're in a hurry ? Came here on a whim as it sits next to my Sunday breakfast spot. Inside reminds me of an old school drive thru that has been enclosed. I had a regular burger but without a bun as I prefer mine this way. Not a fan of the meat patty as as it tasted previously frozen, it may not have been but it tasted that way. Passing through town and my grandson really wanted something to eat. Boy does this kid love burgers. I needed to get out and stretch my legs so I pulled into the first burger place I saw. That happened to be Hula's. Sitting outside felt like it was too close to the street for me, lots of road noise and the smell of car exhaust. Perhaps if we didn't come during a busy travel time sitting outside would be an option. We chose to sit inside. The wait staff were wonderful. We were heading back home to Oakdale from SFO and needed a place to stop for dinner. Hula's had been on my radar for awhile so we stopped in. We were warmly welcomed and seated ourselves. Hailey came over to get our beverage order and when she delivered our cokes, we ordered. I ordered the patty melt on rye with swiss and a side salad with ranch dressing. My husband was in a breakfast mood and since they serve breakfast all day, ordered two buttermilk pancakes. We watched the baseball game that was on, volume pleasantly low and checked our messages. Before long Hailey returned with our food. My patty melt was truly one of the best I've ever eaten. My husband's pancakes were large, light and fluffy. They also offer sugar free syrup for the win. When she brought our bill, she offered us the complimentary ice cream. We declined this time but agreed it was a nice gesture. Foods actually pretty good. As long as you ordered before 830 P.M. I know the hours say until nine but it's really 830 maybe. I was in Modesto. My wife wanted Hula's and I tried to call right at 8:30 as I left. No answer as I called several times the whole way there. "Mailbox not set up yet, call again later!" Nice!!! I pulled in at 8:50 and was told I couldn't place an order for anything other than ice cream. Like I said as long as it's before 830 your good..... Hopefully! Hulas has always been a lunch favorite but today and the last time I was here was not good. Apparently the cook is new. Ok. Then the young girl with brown hair the same one I had last time just doesn't seem to want to be working. She didn't take our order as asked or follow directions about when we wanted it. Then she finally came and asked if we wanted more drinks after lunch was done we said yes. She put her fingers down in our glasses and went to refill them. I said no I don't want these sodas your finger was in it. Finally my daughter's sandwich had to be remade and the fries were not cooked all the way. We been coming here for yrs. I finally made a point to stop at Hula's after years of driving this stretch of road and I'm glad I did! My friend and I both ordered the Escalon Burger and thought it was a good burger. The $2 pints of draft 805 were also a great way to end a big day. The staff were also really friendly and kind. All of our servers were excellent. And I thought it was really sweet when one of them asked if my dog could have bacon (I said yes!) and later returned with a bowl of water, a few strips of bacon, and some extra dog treats for her. The covered outdoor seating, with parts of it under a real roof, also makes this a good dog-friendly option even in rainy weather. read more

We've been wanting to try this place for yearssss since we always passed on our way up visiting family. It left us very disappointed and would never return. Food was just messy ,low quality, lacking flavor. Breakfast items are simple to make so when your eggs are bad that goes to show you right there. The server gave us dirty plates how does that happen? That's part of their job to pay attention to detail and why is their health Score so low!! It's sad to see not a chain restaurant serve such low quality food. This little gem is hidden in tiny little Escalon packs a punch. It has the resemblance of an old school drive thru and it is a solid eatery to enjoy even if your just passing through. I always wait to tip a place until I've had a chance to actually experience it. With their particular setup I ended up asking the server at the window to retrieve my receipt specifically so I could write in my tip after we ate. We hadn't planned on eating there but last minute sat down and let our dogs out for a potty break. It was nice to see water bowls out and the server even came out with huge dog treats for all three of my pups. She even went above with making valid suggestions on what we should order and it did not disappoint us. We felt welcome and taken care of. 2nd visit in a couple of weeks and both times good food and service. Teriyaki Burger with a pineapple added with sweet potato fries and cherry shake.. awesome. Latest was teriyaki chicken sandwich and good but the Banana shake was killer with fresh banana in it. A bit cooler inside too and free WiFi so can't beat it. This is a cute little roadside stop in the unassuming town of Escalon. Never stopped in this town for anything but gas in the past. It's a quick rest for those heading to or from the Sonora hills and surrounding areas. One of the gems is they're dog friendly, something that's a real crap-shoot when you've got your furry friends with you. The outside dining is a plus for this. I had the tuna melt and substituted grilled onions in place of the tomato which was a nice touch. The fries are the crinkle cut kind which i enjoy for their ability to grab more of whatever you dip your fries in. My wife had a chicken sandwich, loaded with fresh green lettuce (not iceberg), fresh jalapeños and onions. All served on a roll that held together well and had a nice crunch to it. We fed the puppers a couple tiny pieces of fries and a few licks of the free vanilla soft serve they offer. All in all, the food was decent roadside fare and the prices were very reasonable, especially in today's inflation and overpriced hellscape that dining out has become. Place looked very promising and I was hoping we found a fun local place for burgers. Drove up and you could smell the food cooking, smelled good and the place was packed which was also another good sign . Signage on the building stated freshly made soups and chili, ordered a bacon cheese burger with fries and a Philly cheese steak with chili cheese fries. Food came out in about 20-min and the plates were loaded. You could tell right away that the fries weren't fresh. Took a bite and they seemed like they had sat too long and were refried but Instead of being extra crispy they were so oily that they were completely inedible. Don't know if our food had been sitting a while before it came out but it wasn't hot and my French roll was dry, large chunks of beef with grilled peppers, onions and mushrooms. The veggies were very good. Our bacon cheeseburger was grilled crispy as in well done and dry but it had good quality bacon and cheese. Lettuce, tomato and red onions were fresh as well. The chili on the chili cheese fries was more ranch style beans vs chili and mildly flavored. If I were to give the place a retry I would order a BLT with onion rings. Upon paying, I let the girl at the counter know that the fries were super greasy and not good and she said something that I couldn't quite hear but basically amounted to fries are greasy and she clearly didn't care. read more

This spot doesn't look like much when you are driving past it but we'd heard the food was really good so we decided to give it a shot and we were NOT disappointed! The inside is pretty small with booths only lining the two sides of the dining room but there is also some patio seating. It wasn't busy when we arrived so we were seated quickly. After checking out the menu my son and I decided to split the skewer plate since neither of us was super hungry. It came with 2 good sized skewers and a healthy portion of white rice and it was DELICIOUS. The filet mignon was tender and both the meat and veggies were perfectly grilled with a yummy teriyaki sauce. My boyfriend had the tri tip sandwich on a roll with fries and said while the fries were pretty standard, the tri tip had really good flavor and the meat was nice and tender. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. When the waitress brought our check, she asked if we wanted some complimentary soft serve..."Uh, duh!" LOL. You have your choice of chocolate, vanilla or swirl and the little portion is just right after a big meal when there's not really much room left for dessert. My only issue was that the place could stand a really good cleaning but that's a pet peeve of mine. Overall, we all enjoyed our visit. The food and service were both great and we would most definitely return to try one of those amazing sounding burgers that they are known for. read more
