A pretty decent spot to get Hakka (Indo-Chinese version) cuisine on the Danforth. There are a few tables for dine-in but it's been known as a takeout spot for a long time. All the Hakka favorites are represented including the chili chicken, indo-chinese style fried rice, crispy beef and the others. The fried rice is pretty good and flavorful. I tried the ginger crispy chicken and while there was definitely the essence of ginger, the honey sweet sauce that coated it was a bit too cloying for my taste, and had to balance it with some chili sauce. I was walking on Danforth when I dropped by Danforth Dragon for some takeout. Danforth Dragon is supposed to serve Hakka Chinese food. I ordered the egg drop soup and the shrimp noodle. I was disappointed by the egg drop soup. It was bland and just lumpy eggs in water. The shrimp noodles was good, but nothing special. You can get this dish at any Chinese restaurant in a food court. Holy Hakka, the crispy ginger beef is amazing!!! I've tried hakka a few times and the crispy ginger beef is my go-to test of how good it is. Gotta say, Danforth Dragon did not disappoint. The beef was crispy without being hard and jerky-like in texture, the garlic flavour really came through, and the overall taste was sweet/spicy-but-leaning-towards-sweet. Basically, checked all the things I look for in my crispy ginger beef. Got also a few other things: - Shrimp pakora: Pretty good! The coating wasn't too thick, shrimp-to-fillong ratio was fine, and while it was chewier than what I'm used to, that was actually a good thing. - Singaporean noodles: A miss for me. I opened up the takeout container and smelled the curry and got so excited. Too bad the dish didn't live up to that initial smell. It wasn't bad, just a bit dry and would have wanted a slightly stronger curry taste. - Mango lassi: Thick, yogurty, strong mango flavour. I really enjoyed Danforth Dragon. Overall food was on the mild side compared to other halka restaurant. If you enjoy halka flavour but not too keen on spicy food, I would recommend this place. Crispy ginger beef ( $15.50) I ordered dry however it was too crunchy for me.It was like eating meat candy. Not sure if they have a choice of "wet" on the menu. Also had Shrimp balls 5 pcs($8.99), masala fish($12.99), Jeera green beans($13.50). You can never go wrong with deep fried food. They were all okay... not incredible or anything. Had the spicy pork egg roll & manchurian pork ribs. The ribs were so-so. The ribs were a bit crispy but the sauce was disappointing - it lacked rich umami punch & there wasn't much flavour. The complimentary rice was rather small - it was like a cup portion of soup. The egg roll was great. It was a nice variation of the traditional egg roll. We ordered delivery. I've seen recommendations for this and have been curious. I ordered around 8 and they close at 9. Everything tasted like they cooked it at noon. Crispy ginger chicken my knife wouldn't go through. For a bit of childhood memories I ordered chicken balls. They were so disappointing. The ginger chicken was out of this world as was the chow mien, the spring rolls as many other delectable dishes. The flavours and presentation was amazing. Very nice local Hakka Chinese place in the neighborhood. I've always had good service here. The best is the crispy beef, chilli chicken and some of the noodle dishes. Eggplant is also really good. For many years my family had enjoyed the reasonable quality, cheap food from this local restaurant. After being very disappointed with the low standard of food the last 2 times we went there we will NEVER go here again. The food is served in flimsy toxic styrofoam boxes that leak all over the plastic bag. The "fish" curry contained one stray shrimp, 2 bits of raw broccoli and congealed sauce. The fish had a thick soggy coating and the white rice was all in one lump. The staff are unaccommodating, rude and do not listen. The bag of food always contains things that I SPECIFICALLY say I don't want. Plastic forks, straws, pop and plastic packages of sauce. It is so sad that the quality of food and service has gone so rapidly downhill. read more

Other than it seemed clean place the food was very bad. I had to hakka chow mein which had no flavour and no vegetables and precooked chicken. It was delivered to me within three minutes of ordering. The only favouring with salt. Why would I come to a restaurant to eat completely plain noodles? This place is unclean, disgusting and has terrible customer service. I found a dead fly at the bottom of my takeaway container. Went back to show them my food with the fly in it as evidence and I got called disgusting while being sworn at by the manager. Terrible customer service. Great prices, great flavours, great portion sizes. DD is not fancy, but they do make yummy eats. I really like the jeera (beef or chicken) for a nice spicy meal. Or, better yet, the manchurian chicken. I don't recommend their naan. Meal comes with rice included, which is a nice bonus. One thing about Hakka food: a lot of it is deep fried, so it can be quite filling and quite heavy. Keep that in mind when you order. Hahaha... don't listen to all those people who aren't satisfied with the Danforth Dragon. Those are the same people who think Chinese food is chicken balls, egg rolls and fortune cookies. Hello! Those are just made-up foods. China is a massive country with so many regional cuisines. What most people in Toronto think of when they think of Chinese food is actually Cantonese food. The more well-known, but less famous Chinese foods are probably Szechuan and Shanghai (dumplings, green onion pancakes, etc.) fare. Hakka food, on the other hand, is a different beast altogether... and at the Danforth Dragon, they don't serve pure Hakka food... but they serve Indian-influenced Hakka food. They serve food that is popular amongst the Hakka Chinese living in India. You're not going to find Cantonese Chow Mein here, folks. Back to the restaurant: the service is always excellent, and the food is always amazing! I usually order the dishes that are either spicy or cripsy... those are my favourite. This joint is off the beaten path of the hustle and bustle of the main Danforth strip. We walk in and were immediately greeted and seated. They have one high chair and plates/bowls and children's plastic utensils. We proceeded to order half an order of shrimp pakoras, Manchurian fried rice and deep fried ginger chicken. The pakora were served with a cilantro based dipping sauce. They also have an In-house hot sauce which was very good. They were piping hot and fresh. Sooooo delicious! This was followed by the Manchurian rice which tasted just like any other fried rice. I could not taste the cilantro or hot sauce. But it was very good. The ginger chicken was tasty and was the dry kind without too much sauce the way I like it. It was on the sweet side which is not my personal preference but the dish was good when eaten with white rice. The price was on the higher side. Total bill came to $34 and $40 with tax and tip. Service was excellent. They kept refilling our glasses and the food came promptly. We also had lots of leftovers that we took to go. Very good overall. Ordered: -We asked the owner/chef to make recommendations because it was the first time we had Hakka cuisine. 1. Chicken pakoras - The best thing recommended! Juicy, fried chicken balls with a crunchy outside and tandoori-esque inside. 2. Fried paneer with green chutney - I generally like paneer dishes, but this one seemed a bit stale. 3. Crispy ginger chicken - Tasted more like "General's Tao's" chicken and had a bit too much breading. 4. Szechuan chowmein - Labelled as a "Hakka" dish, but I couldn't taste the curry. It was more like your standard Chinese noodle dish. Service: -Owner/chef was friendly and open. No complaints. I wandered here on my visits to Danforth. There were quite a few options for inexpensive eats in this stretch but the Hakka cuisine sign pulled me here. I haven't had Hakka style Chinese in a long long time. I went through the menu and decided on the Chicken Manchurian (what is a better dish to represent the Sub Continent take on this style of food) I waited for my food and looked around the seats were all empty and the phone rang nonstop, this leads me to believe this is more of a take out/delivery place. My food was brought in quite fast and sadly it didn't arrive on the sizzling platter that is the claim to fame for this dish. Never mind I tried the food without the rice first to get an idea of what I was in for. This dish disappointed as it neither had the sweetness nor the heat that is the signature for this item (I am guessing they are skimping here on Ketchup and chilli sauce which believe it or not are the key ingredients for the sauce for this dish) This is more of a place to fill up rather than enjoy, solely based on this signature dish for this cuisine. 2 Stars. Egg rolls are ok 3/$4.95 and a small wonton soup is $5.95. The huge draw for me is the beef & broccoli ($13.50) in all its glory. The best asian Hakka restaurant I have found so far in town. If you are into spicy dishes the Manchurian and chili chicken are spot on. I was heading over to Square Boy for a gyro but stumbled onto this Chinese Hakka restaurant on the south side of the Danforth. Place is small, clean with friendly service. Extensive selection of Cantonese/Szechuan dishes and some Hakka scattered in the menu. Ordered the crispy eggplant (#117A) which was crispy on the outside and still soft on the inside. The gingery sweet sauce was not overly oily or saucy but could have been more Hakka spicy for me. It's a must order, and one of the best I've had aside from Fredericks. It is spicy, but delicious. Ginger Crispy Beef - also one of the better ones my husband and I have had. You can taste and see the ginger, perfect amount of sauce coating the fried pieces of beef. If you love crispy ginger goodness, this is your dish! Hakka chow mein - I love the texture of the noodles, not over-cooked. The chow mein is a bit bland but it does pair well with chilli chicken and crispy ginger beef because of their spice and saltiness. Shrimp pakoras - my least favorite due to its spongy texture and a flavour profile that I'm not a fan of. However, my husband really enjoyed them. The service is outstanding if you get a woman whom has been there a long time because she's experienced and is efficient and always knows my name and checks what I've ordered and how I like my food according to their archived files LOL and she bags the order well knowing what goes inside. She needs a raise! The others are okay, but not always great although polite. I always get the chicken pakoras because they're good and have a mild hint of curry taste, but not traditional Indian style (chicken is better than the fish). I also get Manchurian chicken (my favourite), as it's delicious, likely because it's fried and lightly floured so brings it up a notch. I tried their Hakka noodles but found it bland and gave it a second try, but requested a kick, but I wasn't thinking when I used the word "kick" so they made it very spicy...they were accommodating LOL. I tried one of the eggplant dishes, but it was just okay guess because I was expecting something else; better to go with the fried version. Prices are fair and it's 5 minutes walk from the subway. Free fortune cookie, free rice with a certain dish I cannot recall and free pop if you spend a certain amount. read more

For those who don't know what Hakka cuisine is, it's basically Chinese food with an Indian twist. Apparently created by Chinese who moved to India, this style of food has become a category of its own and grown to follow people around the world, and I'm grateful! Danforth Dragon is a really great place for Hakka. The quality is good; not the best, but pretty darn good. More importantly, it's not too oily which can often be the case with Hakka cooking. I blame me for the average review. After passing by DD countless times, usually in favourite of the deliciousness of Square Boy, my friends and I finally decided to drop in for dinner last Friday. I'd never eaten Hakka before, but we liked the description enough to give it a whirl, ordering everything labelled Hakka from the menu. Now, this was a good idea in principle, but I think we would've been better served asking our server for some guidance. The good: Manchurian soup. a great hot and sour soup base with chicken. The hot and sour base was less viscous than most (a good thing), but it could have used a little more heat. Overall really tasty. The bad: Manchurian chicken. I didn't like the consistency of the sauce and the chicken really turned me off. Goopy and spongy isn't good. The average: everything else we tried. pork spring rolls, sizzling beef and fried paneer, though the latter was a bit above average with the nice green chutney. The service, as everyone else has mentioned, was great. Very attentive and friendly. In the end, I'm still going to give it a chance, but this time I'll do so with the assistance of the staff and if you haven't been, I still say you should give it a chance too. read more

I entered the mouth of the dragon full of anticipation but exited very disappointed. Granted I only ordered the Chilli Chicken, but that's the cornerstone of Hakka cuisine. The Chilli Chicken tasted like deep fried chicken in tasteless brown sauce with some cut green chillies tossed in. It was pretty flavorless except for the spicy chillies. Bah humbug! Chilli chicken should be a tad garlicky, a tad cumin-y, pepper-y, vinegar-y, onion-y and ergo easily delicious. It's very, very easy to make. Can't believe DD messed this up. Have been the the DD two times now. Both times the service has been wonderful. They have a delicious Pakora and a their Ginger Chicken is delightful with a carmalized-like coating. However, if you are looking for a traditional Chinese place, this is not what you are looking for.
