I finally made it to the original Lucky Lin's (on Finch)! A friend of mine has been raving out this place for years, so I had to try their Guyanese Chinese cuisine since I was in the area. I ordered their Fried Chicken Leg on Top, served with Fried Rice for only CDN$9.00 on their Lunch Menu. Even though I was dining in, it was served in a takeout container that was packed full of food. It was heavy! Opening the box revealed a ton of food, packed to almost overflowing. This was not a case of them using a small box. It was packed! After being impressed with the portion size, especially for the price, I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the flavour. The chicken was fine but the fried rice was just kinda blah. It had no "wok hei". It needed a much hotter wok. It wasn't terrible but it definitely wasn't good. The ambiance is simple and sparse, with bare walls and minimal decor. If you haven't tried Lucky Lin's then you need to make time to go! I think this is absolutely the best value you can get for lunch. For $11, they are very generous eith the portion and not only that, its SO DELICIOUS! I ordered the Chili Chicken with gravy on fried rice and it was so fragrant and tasty. I usually go to the one on Rylander in Scarborough. Lunch specials everyday from 11-4. I think this place has been in business for more than 20 years. Lunch is $9.99 with a choice of noodles or rice with protein on top. A lot of selection and portion size is old school portion (heavy). The food is great, it's Chinese-Guyanese style one of the best combo. The service is fast on the weekdays but on the weekends it's a little bit more of a wait because, it's very busy. Must call ahead. Mostly take out but people dine, very clean and staff are very friendly. Fried chicken, chili tofu with gravy, sweet and sour pork, fish and shrimp. Pepper Shrimp must try. First time here. The restaurant has been converted to self serve dine-in. The $8.50 lunch specials are all day. There were lots of party trays waiting for pickup. We wanted to try some of their food before we decide on ordering some party trays. Our favourite dishes were the fried chicken leg on top, pepper shrimp, and chili chicken. The bbq chicken was a bit too tangy and tasted like ketchup based sauce. Portions are very reasonable for what you pay. This place is very overhyped. Great price but the food could definitely be more seasoned. I found myself needing the pepper sauce to aid the chow mien. The pepper shrimps were okay. For my first review of 2022, I'm giving a shoutout to my favourite takeout restaurant--Lucky Lin's! This place is truly a hidden gem. Not only are the portions super massive and the price is extremely economical, the food actually tastes crazy delicious! I just want to keep on eating, even though my stomach is telling me that it won't stretch any bigger. My husband and I love getting takeout from Lucky Lin's because it could literally feed us for days. In fact, that's the actual reason for why we decided to get it over the weekend, because we were both too lazy to batch cook so that my husband has food for work (yep, he's a frontline worker, so he still gotta go to the hospital for his shifts). We ordered four dishes and it was enough for me to pack six lunch boxes for my husband to take to work PLUS enjoy our dinner that evening. Seriously, when I wrote that the portions are super massive, I mean the styrofoam containers are literally bursting with all that noodles and rice!! Just jam packed with so much goodness!! About the food... where do I begin? If you like spicy, you'd definitely enjoy their spicy salted calamari dish. The calamari is perfectly battered and I love the kick from the chilli. I would say the best way to enjoy the calamari is with the fried rice, I just load the leftover chilli from the calamari onto the fried rice and BOOM it's hitting all the tastebuds. We also ordered the jerk chicken, which was super moist and tasty. They also have regular fried chicken and BBQ chicken too... it's too hard to pick a favourite, but if I had to, I would opt for the regular fried chicken--very crispy! And we got the dahlpuri with curry vegetable and potato that was super loaded. I usually enjoy eating it with my hands, but for this one, I had to fork and knife it. Haha, this is how you know that the portion is just massive. Now, what's special about Lucky Lin's is their homemade hot sauce, I always make sure I get extras in my takeout. I literally drench my dish with that hot sauce, and if there's leftovers, I keep it in the fridge to enjoy with my other meals. It's super spicy and adds the perfect kick to any dish! Overly surprised and impressed by this restaurant. My coworker showed me this place on a work trip and I cannot believe the value you receive during lunch special. I got the chow mein with sweet and sour pork and I'll have to say, it was pretty good given its price point. The portion was massive, lots of pork and lots of noodles with a drink for a whopping $7! They were also fast. To me, although it may not be gourmet in any way, the quality and quantity I received from my whopping $7 I could definitely say yes, please all over again. I'm always on the search for good value in terms of lunch options, and I have settled on this restaurant for the time being. Good portions, great price ($7-$8) and most importantly great taste! I have eaten here twice now for lunch, the first time having the chili chicken and the second time the jerk chicken, both on Fried Rice. The chili chicken here easily beats other Chinese restaurants I've been too, and was perfectly spicy and crispy. I can't say the same for the jerk chicken however, it felt almost.. underseasoned? There was no jerk flavour or spice that I had expected, and was really more like just slightly burnt chicken. As for the fried rice, it was consistently delicious and really well packed into the container both times. The fried rice also has this amazing smoky flavour. The spring rolls were just your average frozen spring rolls deep-fried and definitely not something I would get again. Overall this is a place I will continue to come back to when I'm craving a Chinese/Hakka lunch special. I would have given this restaurant 4 stars for the food and price range. Unfortunately, I have to give this restaurant 2 stars for the customer service and experience that we received from the manager. The female manager is incredibly rude. Her demeanor is mean and she lacks hospitality. When she was faced with a question she merely brushed us off like we weren't worth speaking to. However, I feel sorry for her staff who are super sweet. One young man memorized our orders considering we are regulars and another young woman who is quick on her feet when accommodating tables. You can tell that when the boss is there it's a completely different atmosphere and setting. The establishment seems to be relatively clean. Food is delicious, tasty and incredibly good portions. Yet, I recommend coming here during lunch to get a good deal and your moneys worth. During lunch 2 people could eat for about under $15 - 20 from the lunch menu, soda is included. If youre hungry their portions will definitely satisfy you. My go to dish is the Chili Chicken or Chili Shrimp on fried rice. My family and friends are regulars. Overall they deserve about 4 stars. I'm just very disappointed from the service we received from the female manage. This has been a ongoing occurrence everytime we've eaten there when she's present. I remember Lucky Lin's from the Markham and Eglinton days. After being reminded about them from a friend, I thought I would check them out for old time sake...what a mistake! Trusting the reviews online, we bought food yesterday, mixed lo-mein and pepper shrimp. The food tasted like it was made the day before and re-heated in a microwave. The pepper shrimp was not "pepper shrimp" at all, it was fried and tasted like cardboard. The lo-mein was terrible, the shrimp was rubbery, the pork and chicken were just yuck, the beef was ok. This place is kinda of hidden in a small plaza. I came here to get quick bite and thought i would give this place a try. The upside is that the place is pretty clean. The food is mediocre, there are a lot of better Chinese food around the area for similar prices. The fried food is especially...bad. You can tell they use really old oil to fry their food as they come out all dark and black. Service for take out is not the fastest either. This place is very basic. Nothing spectacular. I only order the barbeque chicken with plain fried rice. The chicken is always good. To be fair sometimes I have received the plain fried rice burnt but I do keep coming back because of the barbeque chicken. The sauce that they put on the chicken is always amazing. The price is not bad. For one order of bbq chicken on top of plain fried rice is about $13. I usually order from there a couple times a year. You would fair better if your phone in your order and pick it up or have it delivered. This place might not be for everybody who is looking for 5 Star cuisine. You can get friend rice and chowmein with "chicken on top" which is either bbq or fried-- it's literally a meal for three. Sometimes the food is better Than others but great bang for your buck. So this is my go to Chinese restaurant. Food is delicious and prices are good too. My usual order is sweet and sour chicken with fried rice, and chilli chicken with fried rice. Total is usually around $21. It's enough food to feed 2-4 people. Also service is usually quick as food takes around 15 minutes. Not to forget their spring rolls are 3 for $1. Would recommend this establishment to other. They have dine-in or take-out. Their restaurant is always clean, you seat yourself and waitress will come and take your order. I will start off by saying Lucky Lin's on Finch avenue in Markham is one of the worst restaurants I have ever been too. I ordered a plain white rice along with an order of beef in black bean sauce. The order took about 30 minutes to come and when it finally arrived to my table it was about 95 percent onions and 5 percent beef. I immediately called for the manager, he came over and I pointed this out. His response to this was beef prices have gone up so they have cheeped out and decided to fill the dish with onions. I felt cheated as l was charged $9.75 for a plate of onions. As I said before one of the worst restaurant I have ever been too, would not recommend this place to anyone, will never go back. It's a pretty basic place, relaxing and simple. I've eaten here a few times and had a few different dishes. Basically big hearty portions and the vegetables are flavourful and still have a snap to them. Order the dhalpurri, but split it in 1/2 and save the rest for later because it's biiiig! Came here yesterday and ordered their lunch special: fried rice with chicken on top, fried rice with bbq chicken on top, fried rice with chili chicken and pepper fish. Fried chicken very good, fried rice just okay. The bbq chicken taste like they put sweet and sour sauce on it. Chili chicken just okay (had better chili chicken at other Hakka place). The let down of all was the pepper fish. No flavour at all. I think they forgot to salt it even though there were pepper bits. We spend $35 for all including tax and tip. Will I come back? No!
