Dami has a clean, good looking interior with comfortable seating. Our server, water, miso soup, and salads were all on point. Next comes the Ninza roll, the Volcano roll, and the Heart Attack roll. All 10/10 I was impressed. My new favorite sushi restaurant in town, doing it right. Check em out! My last local favorite sushi restaurants rolls had an old fishy taste to them the last 3x I ate there. So I really appreciate everything being fresh from here. They gave everyone at the table miso and salad and free fried Oreos for dessert. The Kiss of Fire roll was very good, the spicy Tuna was just ok. I don't prefer the slightly burned flavor of the way they prepare it. The Philadelphia roll was good, and the noodles were very good. The flavor of the miso was perfect! I stopped by with my elderly mother (who is in her eighties), who had just undergone surgery, because she wanted some soup and needed to use the restroom. While I was reviewing the menu, I asked if she could use the bathroom and I was told that they did not have a restroom, and that she'd have to use the bathroom in the attached hotel instead. The sushi chef has been there a very long time and you are treated like an old friend. Yes, you must walk through the hotel lobby which is a bit seedy, but behind the door and the flashing open sign is a comfortable oasis with an indoor koi pond and amazing food. In my opinion Dami is the best kept secret in Anchorage. Due to its unfortunate location in the Econo Inn downtown, most people haven't given it a chance but I'm here to say you're missing out! The food is always fresh and service is attentive and friendly. I'm a huge fan of spicy tuna but find a lot of places put too much sriracha or vinegar in it and the flavor of the tuna gets lost. Dami makes theirs just right without losing spice. The best deal is their bento box. There are two options, one comes with your choice of roll (under $14 on their list of rolls). I love their kalbi bento without the roll. It comes with generous portions for $25. Dami will always be my first choice for sushi! read more

What I did not expect was that the poki wouldn't come with rice, and the portion would be about a half cup of food in total for $22. Most of it was cut chunks of apples, with very little salmon. Don't come here!!! Avoid!!! Worst customer service! Waitress gave us the 'wrong menu with the wrong prices' we didn't know this until we got the bill and noticed a big difference in prices. She basically charged us $3 more per roll. We grabbed the menu she gave us and the rolls were cheaper but she went to grab the "actual" menu that looked old and charged us those prices. For starters my favorite sushi to order is the Philadelphia roll and I always pair it with the Mongolian beef or sesame chicken combo which of course tastes really good. Inside the establishment there is a fairly big pond with koi fish swimming around and it really gives the place a relaxing touch. When dining in the service is prompt and the server even helped with explaining what's inside certain toppings and sushi rolls which is very helpful to people who may have allergies. When ordering for takeout/pick up my food is always ready in a timely manner. The only "bad" thing I can say (which isn't the restaurants fault) is there are homeless people lounging around outside which makes it less appealing to want to come inside to eat and feel your vehicle is safe outside. It's also kind of hard to get into the parking lot considering the business is right on the corner of a busy street area downtown. If the restaurant ever considered moving its location I believe they will get even more business. But again the food, service and decor will always have me come back for more!! read more

Looking for a late night meal after snowboarding all day and wanting to be away from the main part of downtown, this place did it. Great choice I usually look over the bad and not-so bad reviews to see what was the worst day some of someone's pathetic life that compelled them to trash the hard work of building-up a respectable business. I found some pretty bold claims, none phased me. So I faced the -5℉ temps and went for a walk from my hotel to dine with my son. At 9pm on a weekend night, the place was empty. This usually is a really bad sign. Still willing to run the risk, we moved up to the host, equally as warm and fuzzy as the weather outside. As we went to our table walking by the sushi bar, it looked as if they had checked out. Station cleaned, fish wrapped in plastic, no chefs at the ready. Now I'm worried. Looking over the leignthly menu we decided 3 rolls to share and Agedashi tofu. Almost immediately we were served Miso and a small salad. Still no pleasantries from the host/server but by now it doesn't matter. The chef appeared, sushi was made to order and delivered shortly after. Very fresh, very good and not breaking the bank. I guess the Miso, salad and dessert was included. We couldn't find any mention of a meal set. Funniest part of the meal was, after we finished the main course our expressionless and generally unimpressed server cracked and said, "are you ready for your Oreos". Not knowing what to expect we both answered "ummmm, ok?" Minutes later two, hot out of the oil, tempura deep fried Oreos under a Denali sized frop of whipping cream drizzled with chocolate running out like an avalanche in May was set down between us. These are not at all like the county fair versions, insanely better. GET Them! The restaurant was clean, nice and efficient. Upon leaving we ordered some rolls to-go for others who did not want to bare the elements, it was prepped quickly and with grace. Unfortunately, we went against our better judgement here. Because of decent reviews online, we thought this place might be ok to get a cheap bite to eat. Dami was only a block from where we were staying, and seemed like a convenient option. The parking lot is tight, and for some reason full of people walking around. On our visit, there was also an old SUV with considerable body damage blocking much of the entry into the lot. That should have been our first queue. Inside was nearly empty, save two or three more patrons. There was an odd odor, almost like burning or cigarettes. The hostess/server seated us and gave us menus. However, they were not the ones online, and were priced at about double than what we were expecting. When we tried ordering, my wife requested no tofu in her veggie roll. The server was very sharp in responding there was no tofu. But when my wife pointed to the menu, showing tofu was indeed listed as an ingredient, the server didn't even become self aware. I wish I could say there was some food I enjoyed. The edamame was slimy, the miso soup was way too salty, the salad dressing tasted like mayonnaise, and my salmon was burnt (in a bad way). As for the Godzilla roll, the yellowtail was mushy and the eel was paper thin, but was deceptively "stuffed" with immitation crab under it. Finally, it's not the most important thing, but we weren't given a customer copy of our receipt after paying. I wouldn't recommend Dami. If you want sushi in Anchorage, try Yama Sushi; we've had far more success there. read more

I eat a lot of sushi . Dami is definitely on the low end of sushi spots in town . I ordered two rolls (both rolls had several types of fish) . The avacado in both of my rolls had browning , so i had to remove . I ordered my rolls with a side of ponzu sauce and was charged 2$ for that . Not the biggest issue in the world (though I've never been charged extra from any other sushi spots for small sides of ponzu) overall the food was edible so wouldn't give one star but it was very bland . I came to Anchorage for a business trip and found this Sushi place 1 Block away. The restaurant is a family owned and the food is not only delicious but fresh with good quality and quantity. The California Roll was delicious as well my Pan Fried Shrimp Noodles, So saucy and nice spicy flavorful. The staff was generous and got me free Desserts. Hands down, the rudest staff ( possibly owner) I've experienced in Anchorage. Strike one: friend is wearing a ball cap coming off a day of physical labor. Friend asks which way the bathroom is. The woman didn't like the way she looked so she sent her into the hotel next door on a chase trying to find a bathroom just to wash her hands! Later learned they have a bathroom right in the restaurant. The woman had no apology and wouldn't seat her. Strike two; thought I would try again and called in my order for pickup. First the Gyoza smelled like it was cooked in very old used oil, I took one bite and almost gagged. In the trash it went. You can definitely tell they don't change or regularly clean their oil. Every time we said thank you she had no response. Odd. Then my man needed a tea refill and she made a comment he drinks too much and left the tea pitcher at the table with us. Sushi arrived and it wasn't bad but when it came time to pay she automatically added her own tip to the bill without our consent. He told her he did not appreciate that and that it was up to the customer to decide the tip. Quite frankly, with her terrible service, I don't think she even earned a dollar tip. Long story short: Good food, BAD service! Came in Monday night for a birthday dinner for a friend. Reserved for a party of 7. The food came out fast but afterwards we were basically forgotten by the waitress. The waitress was extremely rude, made us feel so unwelcomed and she kept muttering how she's already so busy as is. If we didn't flag the owner for water, we wouldn't have had any. Back in Anchorage and we decided to try Dami again. We were not disappointed. This time we had a toddler with us and our server lady was so nice to him. She even brought him a miso soup with rice in it. As others have mentioned, the miso is basically just broth, but it's tasty. The salad is a nice palate refresher if you save some for between roll pieces. (We always share, so lots of variety) We started with the Gyoza..yum. We got the Sunrise roll which was on the spicier side for my milder is better palate, but still tasty. The Hero roll again.. spicy to me.. but still our hero. Along with those were the Osaka roll.. big individually deep fried pieces of creamy goodness.. and the Crunch roll #2. The crunch roll is a nice mild crunchy bite. Very poor service. Have ordered take out several times and always ask for siracha and they always forget. This was my third order so I decided to call them and remind them even though I had already specified in my order but I did not want to take the chances again. The women who answered assured me she would place the hot sauce this time and even said "I read that your order says to include it so I will". As expected, my Order arrives and no siracha! When I came to Anchorage, I was spoiled by the fresh fish. Dami did not disappoint me. I found Dami through Yelp. Based on the positive reviews, I checked it out one evening during my visit to Anchorage. It was very easy to find and I liked that it had its own parking lot in the back, shared with the Econolodge next door. Walking in, my first impression was that Dami had a tranquil, intimate, and romantic ambiance. With an indoor fountain and soft lighting, it seemed like a good place for a date or business meeting. I opted to sit at the sushi bar, and watched the chefs make orders. The sushi bar is always a good seat in a sushi restaurant IMHO. My order was for the bento box combo with teriyaki salmon, tempura and choice of any sushi roll. I picked the Sunrise (?) roll with unagi and spicy salmon. My meal also came with an appetizer, miso soup, house salad, rice, and a mini cream puff. All of this for just $18.95! A good value for Japanese dinner bento box. The teriyaki (wild) salmon was tasty and fresh, although it was doused in too much teriyaki sauce. The spicy salmon in the roll had a nice kick to it and also tasted fresh. The tempura breading was too thick, but it was not bad. With all the sides, I left full and satisfied. 4 stars for good value, nice decor, fresh fish and friendly staff. read more

This sushi restaurant is one of my favorite sushi restaurants here in Anchorage. My boyfriend and I love volcano rolls and crunch rolls and we both agree that they have the best. We came here for dinner on Sunday night. The restaurant was pretty quiet. The food was delicious. We ordered kimchee ramen and cucumber special roll. Wow!!! It was very flavorful and huge portions on the ramen. The cucumber roll(no rice) was filled with lots of fresh fish. I love ginger and they have fresh pickled ginger, not the packaged stuff. Sketchy location but great food. This is my regular sushi spot. Dami consistently serves up great quality sashimi that easily has twice as much fish in each slice as the other places in town. Despite being located in a motel building the restaurant itself is clean, beautifully decorated and the waitstaff pleasant. I ordered Kimchi Ramen and they gave me a bowl of instant ramen with Kimchi and charged me $12 . I could have made my own top ramen at home and added kimchi for a fraction of the price . Overall it was just ok . Service was good , no complaint there. I left the whole bowl of " instant ramen" they made for me and the gal came by and asked me if I didn't like it , I told her " you gave me instant noodle like in the package " and she just smiled and walked away . Best sushi and japanese restaurant In town. Me and my husband have been coming here for over 10 years and they have never disappointed. The only disappointment we feels is when we have gone to other sushi restaurants and realize we should have came back to this one. Our favorite roll is the Viper it is $14, well worth it. The service is always great and every other dish we've ordered was great. Tonight we had the Mongolian beef and it was super tender. So if you wanna go to a place that has excellent food, great service you will never be disappointed this is the restaurant for you.
