    Ham and Cheese Baguette Sandwhich
    Melanie M.

small bakery that offers bagels / bagel sandwhiches as well as classic european style sandwhiches. my bagel sandwhich was filled with a fair amount of very fresh ingredients. the bagel itself had a nice flavor with a good chew, but it was missing the classic fluffiness and fullness of an east coast bagel ... have yet to find that in sf. the sandwhiches on baguette were very light and had simple flavors.

Dago Bagel is a little gem. But then I realized anything Tony touches turns to delicious. I'm not entirely surprised his bagel/bakery ended up being good. Dago has a real racial and negative connotation to it. Bold by Tony to go with that name. Even bolder that he makes this giant sweet flatbread thing with all these seasonings and honey on it. They got a savory one too! The bagels are assumed. They are good. What I've realized that elite bagel places do, is that they get them seasonings on both sides of the bagel. Not just the top. I'm requesting that be done here please. The amount of cream cheese they give you just isn't enough. Such a crime to under cheese a bagel. But the quality of the cream cheese is very nice. They have a lot of other really solid offerings that come and go. All good. I think what they do well but I don't buy is the bread. They got all types of bread and I feel like if you're in the neighborhood why not buy your special bread here? Everything is made in house. Again, well done Tony. If you're reading this give me a call. I'm your biggest fan. I just want an autograph. And more of your food. Thanks. (4.3 Stars)

Literally best bagel in the city, in my opinion. What sets them apart is their Asiago bagels - one has peppers , one does not. Both are equally fantastic, filling, and leave you wanting more. Staff is always incredibly kind. Take time to chat with them about the place and you'll learn it's part of the highly esteemed Tony Gemignani restaurant family. You can watch them make dough as you wait for your bagel and enjoy a slice of Italian culture.

Great bagels, flavorful lattes, and great back story. Owner Tony G transformed an offensive insult into a neighborhood favorite. Bravo!

Debuted at the end of the pandemic in response to an ethnic slur Dago Bagel from Tony Gemignani is one of three concepts inhabiting 728 Vallejo Street, and from Thursday through Sunday beginning at 08:00am guests are welcome to enjoy everything from true New York Style Bagels to housemade loaves and traditional Italian Pastries made with skill and love. A change of pace for the lauded Pizza maker, a man whose name is nearly-synonymous with North Beach, it is inside the shop that acts as both Bakery and storefront that guests will meet well trained staff and pleasant servers more than willing to discuss products and production at length. Beginning with Bagels, developed in conjunction with Adam Sachs, Dago's collection spans from Pride to Everything and from stretchy skin to a dense interior with good chew the "best" is a matter of personal opinion whether toasted with Cream Cheese or plain. Liberally using Malt and a Cuppone Panettone deck oven imported from Italy, plus stone-ground Flour made on-site, visitors attention is next drawn to Toscano Brothers including "Gold Standard" Baguettes and Organic Sourdough Ace Pagnotta incorporating Spelt, Rosemary and Olives into a 40 year old Sourdough starter. Trending sweet from here, a Sour Cherry and Chocolate Batard souring local produce and TCHO Chocolate, Tony's "Piattina" cuts a wide swath of textures and flavors before Antonio's Italians Pastries rounds things out with classic Rainbow Cookies and world-class Lemon Ricotta Cake plus silky Budino hidden alongside Prosciutto and Mortadella in the cold case.

Serrano bagel with honey butter cream cheese

I was missing the NY bagels so wanted to find a good bagel place nearby. This place is a gem, everything was made fresh, and I really liked serrano cheese bagel I got with honey butter cream cheese filling. Bagels are not as fluffy as NY bagels, but that's expected (I heard it's due to difference in water). I recommend this place to bagels/bread lovers!

Got there around 9:30am on a Saturday and they still had a few of the Detroit bagels left (whew! - I had been there before and they were already out). Also grabbed some of the the chili/honey cream cheese. The cashier was very friendly, and SURPRISE I spied Tony G (the owner of the empire behind the counter working), I started chatting him up and asked for a photo - which he was happy to do. The cheese bagels were great - though I wish I had taken them home to heat first before gobbling up. Love all the Tony's businesses, and am so happy his businesses have sustained through the covid downturn.

Somehow the bagel is both chewy and fluffy in its deliciousness. We especially like the Detroit bagel with its cheesy edges.

I first read about Dago Bagel, a bagel shop operating within the Toscano Brothers bakery (known for sourdough), and award-winning pizzaiolo and restaurateur Tony Gemignani in SF Eater a few months ago. I thought it was so cool he was opening up a bagelry under "dago", which is a slur for Italians. As your local Chinese-Russian-Jew, I love me some reclaiming of racial appellatives! It took a few months, but I finally made it to Dago. I go by North Beach quite a bit, but the hours never really aligned until now. First thing I noticed was the light green exterior and parklet. So bright! So cute! I took a step inside and immediately loved the interior decor as well--there's a retro Coke refrigerator and cool artwork. In addition to bagels, they offer sandwiches, cannolis, tiramisu, cookies, chews, and more. I grabbed 3 everything bagels in a bag for $3 to-go and to freeze (is that blasphemy? I thought it'd be convenient for future carbs.) I also ordered the Serrano pepper and Asiago bagel ($2.85) with Calabria cream cheese ($1.50) because it seemed like the item with the most posted pictures on their Yelp page. Delicious! I'd order it again next time, but I want to try other bagels and schmears. According to SF Eater, these are "tried and true New York-style bagels, twisted by hand, boiled in water and malt syrup, and baked to a chewy, almost tough texture. [Gemignani's] been working on the recipe for years with fellow pizza champion Adam Sachs, perfecting the style and even making his own pine boards for baking the bagels." Service was wonderful, I saw Gemignani himself and he said hi and was friendly (no big deal!) You bet I'll be back for more.

I am an admittedly jaded New Yorker when it comes to bagels, unsolicited opinion and all. Dago bagels are by far my favorite bagels in SF - perfect amount of seasoning on the top of the bagel, great crust, and amazing chew. Their cream cheese is also delicious, especially the Calabrian chili & honey. I'm excited to have a bagel spot this good!

    detroit bagel
    Sarah C.

known for its unique detroit-style bagel which was really a bagel on fluffy bread doused in cheese. very crispy and cheesy when freshly toasted, a tad salty but the bagel itself is chewy and not too dense. pretty novel idea but probably better appreciated by cheese-lovers

    Ducky out front.

Cute little shop. I got the pepperoni pizza bagel! The rainbow cake, the Apricot scone and a cappuccino. We were leaving back to San Diego I opened yelp and there they were #1 on the list. Staff was great and fast.

    Stella W.

Awesome bagel! I didn't know what to expect when I stumbled on this bagel shop. This is not NYC after all...but I would say the density and the texture of Dago bagel rivals the NY bagel! No frills bagel shop and the baked goods are baked in house.

Weirdly, I often have egg-salad sandwiches on my mind, even though I know they can be gross. I've had plenty of egg-salad disasters, sandwich and otherwise, and I'm normally a very gun-shy person, but if a place has egg salad on its menu, I'll probably order it. Wise Sons always has egg salad on its menu. The problem is that it didn't have any egg salad on hand the first two times I came here.* Whatever I had instead, both times (and I had something different each time) was delicious. I don't know why I haven't tried the latkes yet. I guess I'm not a very wise son. The place is old school and feels perfect inside. It won't transport you magically to the past like many killer authentic interiors will, but it's very easy to imagine what the inside of this store looked like in 1941 or whenever. There was never more than one other person dining in each time I came. Maybe it's because I came so late in the day? More people would make it feel like a convivial breakfast destination. Empty, it feels like a good place with good food. Yes, it's overpriced, especially with all the delicious food you can get for cheaper within a few doors of this business on 24th Street in the Mission. But Wise Sons. It's a thing, a thing I'm glad I got wise to. *Did they sell out? Just didn't bother to make it? Who orders egg salad in the 2020s, anyway?

Update to a Formerly Glowing Review…read more This is an update to what was once a glowing review of my beloved Pizzahacker. I've been going for many, many years (close to 10--or more?), so it pains me to say that some changes under new management have shifted the experience for me. Jeff Krupman, the founder and chef (who ended up being a friend!) sold the business to one of his longtime employees a year ago or more ago. (He still owns the Mill Valley location). While they tried to keep a lot of things the same h feel noticeably different. It's interesting that it still shows his name as manager. Here's what I've noticed--not in a good way: The menu now feels overwhelmingly meat-forward, with a dearth of thoughtfully designed vegetarian pizzas. I have mentioned this to Jesse (longtime staff) and a female server, asking them to pass this along. Each pizza also seems to have several more ounces of (still very delicious sourdough) dough. The crust is significantly thicker, and there's simply more of it. What once felt light and beautifully balanced now feels heavier. Vegetarian options are largely reduced to subtraction of meat . I've spoken with longtime waitstaff (including Jesse) and asked that this feedback be shared with Juan, the new owner. One server suggested I could just order a pizza without the meat. But a thoughtfully composed vegetarian pizza is very different from a meat pizza with ingredients removed--and at $24, paying full price for a pizza minus its main topping feels unfair. Perhaps there could be a cheaper option availabile for meaty pizzas without the meat. Please consider making The Summer Fave year round, bringing back the Inside Out, and/or creating more pizzas that don't center around multiple meats. Also, I know that the new management has changed some of the ingredients that made their pizzas so special and delicious. In particular, the sausage on the Yo Vinny, which used to be house made is now closer to the generic sausage you'd find at Pizza Hut. Loses so much of the experience to change to these cheaper ingredients. (I lean vegetarian as much as possible but make occasional exceptions, so I know this!) I used to go to Pizzahacker weekly and look forward to it with genuine excitement. Now, while I still enjoy the occasional pizza, that sense of anticipation is gone. I do want to say I'm grateful that my beloved Intermezzo salad remains unchanged--and I still care deeply about this place. I love PH--please consider the earnest pleas of a longtime customer who has eaten there many dozens of times.
