Definitely looks a little sketchy from the outside but the bagels are awesome and made on site. All of their bagels (everything, onion, poppyseed) had a good outside coating which stuck nicely to the outside. Counter service was super nice and I got my order quickly. I know some other folks have posted about workers not wearing gloves and such. That was not an issue at all today. They used gloves when handling food and removed them when working the register. read more

Can't tell you how the bagels are because I never made it past the rude older Asian lady with short hair behind the counter. As others have mentioned, she has TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I ordered a Lox Sandwich on a Plain Bagel with smear, onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Pretty standard order at most bagel shops. She slapped so little smear on my bagel that that it didn't even cover 3/4s of it then got upset when I asked for more. She got upset when I reminded her about the cucumbers and yelled at me that they were out. And then she put the tiniest little piece of salmon on the bagel and again fussed when I asked if it was possible to get even a tiny bit more. So now I'm paying full price for a sandwich which doesn't even have half of what it comes with and I'm being yelled at like a kid. I agreed to pay for it and that I just probably won't come back and that's okay, but then she started ranting and taking the sandwich apart so I left. read more

Bagel shops come and go, but Star Bagel is still here. They really should be on great bagels lists, but one never sees them mentioned. There is no comparison to New York bagels; these are San Francisco bagels. So why compare? These are chewy inside with a nice crust on the outside. They have a great variety of flavors. I usually choose raisin and everything. Don't miss the pastries on the left; they look great. However, I opt for the bagels each time. Next visit! The shop offers many flavors of cream cheese; strawberry is delicious. Egg and cheese on a bagel is on my list to try. Besides the bagels, the stars are the people who work there. One of my favorite places as a local. I would go here once week or more when I'm feeling lazy. Love their egg and cheese bagel sandwich. The couple that runs the place are so sweet, few words but always generous and sweet. I didn't even know they make their own bagels in back till recently. Haha. I came to this spot for years as a taxi driver. The owners are awesome, and after not coming for a long time, it's great to see they're still doing quality food at a great price. Ordered a bagel with cream cheese, and the lady behind the counter gave me one flimsy napkin. Now I've got cream cheese all over my hand, so I ask for another napkin. I've walked by Star Bagel for years at the corner of Polk and California so much but never stopped by until I was feeling hungry after going to the post office on Pine. I love love love the owner Mr. Lee who deserves the best--he's so friendly, helpful, warm, and sweet. The bagels are delicious (I miss good bagels on the East Coast sometimes) and the sandwiches are filling, cooked well, and so reasonably-priced. The sweeter baked goods are also very good--I tried the cinnamon roll, but will be back to try a doughnut one day. They sell out of some bagel flavors later in the day after noon-time, so be prepared for that! I liked my everything bagel sandwich with egg, cheese, and bacon, and want to try other flavors later. read more

Got a bagel for the 2nd time yesterday at Star Bagels. It was okay, I work nearby so it's convenient. But on my last visit I noticed how the gentleman wasn't wearing gloves to prepare the food, the cutting board was clearly very dirty (potential mold hazard) it looks like they clean it maybe once every other week - and thats being gracious. I also saw a whole pallet of tropicana orange juice bottles left out in the sun outside of the refrigerator - I thought weird but ok. I also bought a $6 mint yerba mate, when I opened it at work it smelled like it had gone off! Fermented yerba mate, I have never ever encountered that before and it made me think had this been sitting out for awhile before being put in the refrigerator like the orange juice? probably. $6 down the drain... I will listen to my intuition and not come back here. I'd rather trust another bagel shop that I can see is properly sanitary and stores their products in the proper way. It's about the size of a living room, the... customer area? is half the size of that. The interior seems stuck in 1985, as do the pastries. The bagels... don't. I get an everything with cream cheese for under $3. Jonathan Kauffman for the SF Chronicle wrote an article 3 years ago titled "Is the Bay Area Developing It's Own Style of Bagel?" He argues that fresh bagel-makers in SF are developing a style that, in his own words, "seems correct: chewy, complex, crusty. Yet something's different." I would like to posit that Star Bagel is proof that the SF bagel is not only real, but has been around for decades*. Star's has that "foreign quality to the flavor -- almost a hint of acidity" Kauffman so well articulates, it's lighter on the inside, it's not as tall and perhaps the hole is a tad larger. Yet still, it "seems correct: chewy, complex, crusty." What's more, it has pride. You have a sip of black coffee. It's not shit. You thank the owner as you leave and he points to the bagel-making machine in the back, says he's one of the last of his kind, implying that there used to be a Star on every corner. Been here multiple times for breakfast. It has its pros and cons. Broke down my rating into subcategories below: Taste: 5...pretty much everything I've had has been delicious, especially the sausage and egg breakfast sandwiches Value: 5... very affordable. Doesn't break the bank. Service: 3... wait isn't very long but the service hasn't always been the friendliest or most welcoming Interior/decor: 2...quite dingy. I am truly sorry to have to write this update, but after being somewhat charmed (perhaps reverse snob appeal) by a hard-working mom and pop operation and finally finding bagels without funny stuff like mono and diglycerides, i had to come back to Earth and noticed zero maintenance, a very low level of cleaning, exposed drain.......really made me wonder what the INSIDE of the kitchen must be like.....it's a TRUST thing.....I don't trust the hygiene at all........good product, good price.......but the center it's located in is a tragedy and the premises is definitely sub-standard.......the good news is......ALL THIS IS CORRECTABLE......if.....IF-F-F........I hope the Lees decide to do what's needed to make the place SPARKLE............. a food establishment MUST BE that!! read more

My go to is a bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel. The experience can be quite different depending on who's working behind the counter. The guy is likeable and is the main person there. But sometimes theres a lady working, and shes not really good with people. Stopped in twice over the last two weeks and I cannot get enough. Went on Sunday around 11am and luckily snagged an everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. Ok this is it. This is SFs best competitor to an NYC bodega bagel breakfast sandwich. They use a mini flat top no microwave like so many SF places use. The bagels are LEGIT. Not too chewy, crunched properly when toasted, and not thick. Crispy bacon. The egg is scrambled as well. This is, to me, by far the best breakfast bagel sandwich in the city and I've been everywhere trying them. I stop at this bagel/donut shop two or three times a week. The owner, Mr. Lee, is very very friendly and makes a great bagel, egg and cheese sandwich that starts your day off perfectly. Coffee is good, but I go there for the service. The atmosphere also is a plus as Mr. Lee, from Cambodia, is a heavy metal aficionado.
