So I hear this is where Harvard students kick off their night... ... but everyone looked 30 [sorry, if you're younger and you frequent here!]. It's alright. A better atmosphere and classier crowd than Roads [Crossroads, MIT's go-to bar], but I'd rather have a cheap pitcher than hastily-made drinks. In my server's nine years of experience, he said he's never served a Godfather; I surmise the bartender never made one either [I had the worst one ever... how do you screw up 1 part amaretto, 1 part scotch????]. Anyways, my friend and I split a pulled pork & blue cheese pizza. As far as pizzas go, it was good I guess. Nothing too difficult in throwing ingredients on dough and putting it in an oven. A decent place to chill in Harvard Square... meh. read more

I get hungry whenever I think about Daedalus for two reasons: The first and most obvious reason is that is that the food is really tasty. Everything is fresh and well made and, although it's classic American fare, it's fairly creative for the price point. I really like the Portobella Sandwich is probably my favorite thing on the lunch menu. Sadly, the second reason I'm always hungry when I think about Daedalus is the service, while always pleasant, is always frustratingly slow. I can't tell you how many times I've seen salads that I thought have sounded great, but by t\he time the server is even ready to take our order I am always way to hungry to be satisfied by leafy greens. Overall, I really like this place. It's nice, tasty, fresh, inexpensive, right around the corner from my office, and has a sweet roof deck in the warmer months. Just don't go there when you're hungry, cause it might chew an arm off while you're waiting. read more

My classmates come here often for a drink. I haven't eaten the food here much, but the drinks are decently priced and the beer selection is good. Leffe - my favorite! If you're up for something classy, the bartenders make a mean dirty martini :) read more

After spending almost a week in Boston for work, my co-workers and I decided to venture to Harvard and see how the night life was. Sadly, we were too tired to spend an entire evening out, but we had the chance to eat at Daedalus. We read some mixed reviews on Yelp, but loved the idea of the roof top outdoor eating. We arrived around 9pm so the dinner rush was clearly over. We were immediately seated. I only got to glance at the downstairs bar, but it looked like a slightly fancier neighborhood pub. Pretty cool and laid back. We then went upstairs and saw the lounge area... very cool. Seems like a place I would like to hang out... a bit more "posh", but not too over the top. We then were seated on the outside rooftop. I liked it... VERY cool spot for a date... or having a nice dinner with a friend. my co-workers are slightly older and had a harder time reading the menus because of the dimly lit dining area... but nothing a little light from my cell phone couldn't fix. OK... let's get down to the meal... I ordered the pan seared scallops... the dish came out and had a somewhat nice presentation, but it also did look a bit sloppy. It didn't seem like the chef took the time to dress it up at all. As for the taste, the scallops were good... not great, but good. The cream sauce added a little bit of zing, but not too much that you lost the flavor of the scallop. The risotto was pretty darn tasty. I'm used to a thicker risotto, but what are you going to do? It tasted great... no need to add salt or pepper. I ordered my staple "Bacardi and Diet" and it was great. I've been to so many places as of late that has watered down drinks. This was nice and had some kick. I then ordered another drink... "On the(I forget the name)".... not good at all... it sounded good, but tasted more like an espresso vodka drink or some kind. I still drank it though... I don't want to be accused of alcohol abuse. =P All in all, I really liked the restaurant. It seemed perfect for college life... not too pretencious, and had just the right amount of character. I'd recommend it if you were going out on a date... good times!!!! read more

I would give Daedalus 5 stars in the summer and 3 in the winter for one reason: roofdeck. I LOVE outdoor eating and drinking, and unfortunately their seems to be a dearth of it in Cambridge. I've never actually eaten here, but have always had a decent time drinking. The good selection of beer runs about $5.50 a pint which is fair given that it's a nice place and there's no cover. Mixed drinks are pricier with basics like a vodka cran with house vodka running $6. I've never had a problem with the bartenders. Daedalus is a great place for large groups and birthdays because you don't need to rent the room and there's a ton of space by the upstairs bar. This is especially true on a weeknight when the place is otherwise pretty dead (in the winter). read more

If you're looking to go for lunch, forget it. Twice this summer I've tried to get lunch here, on my leisurely lunch hour, and it's been unbearably slow. The last time (the *last* time) we went, the waitress was attentive, but it took our food 45 minutes to arrive on our table. I was going into a coma. If we had known they were so backed up, we wouldn't have ordered. Waitstaff - let people know ahead of time if the food is going to take more than 20 minutes! Jeesh! read more

Decent contemporary American dishes. Ok atmosphere, mid-range prices. You can fit mid-sized groups upstairs (6-12).

review for dinner: pricey and not really worth the caliber of food they serve. however, if you share portions or are just looking for a nice place to eat al fresco, this is a great place because of their rooftop eating area. went here twice, once for a birthday and second time for a party. bottom line: go here for drinks and appetizers/starters or to have a group outing that is more for chatting and catching up. go elsewhere for dinner since this place doesn't "WOW" you with their food or their service. read more

My review would have been 3 stars, but I knocked it down because there was no soap in the bathroom!! I've been here for brunch a few times. It's an easy place to take a group early since it's usually fairly empty until closer to noon. The food is good overall. The service is generally decent but can be somewhat on the slow side. I don't have a problem with that. I enjoy the not your average benedict with smoked salmon and avocado. My entire table ended up getting it in fact. All of our poached eggs were hard poached unfortunately. Nice upstairs space, love the skylights. But really - if you're going to be all fancy get some freaking soap!! EDIT 3/10/08: Plus = concerned management. The general manager PM-ed me soon after I made my review, and told me that since the upstairs bathroom is quite small the soap will occasionally get knocked down behind the trashcan. She also said that they will attempt to remedy the situation. read more

Went here with a large group to celebrate a birthday last Friday and, while the food was good and the atmopshere uniquely cozy, I wasn't thrilled for a few reasons: 1. Deposit. They made us put down a deposit when we made the reservations. This is something that I've never heard of before and it still annoys me a little bit even now. You're a restaurant --a midsize party should be able to make reservations without having to put cash down in advance. 2. Vegetarian options. Appetizers and salads are are available in spades but there is really only one viable vegetarian option on the entree menu and it's pasta with some marinara sauce and fresh cheese. Am I five years old? At least have something good for the veggies in the group. 3. Chicken. Some members of my party mentioned that the chicken in their pasta tasted weird... almost like hotdogs. Now, I haven't had chicken in awhile but I'm pretty sure that its not supposed to taste like a Fenway Frank. All in all, I would come back again in a smaller group knowing that an appetizer (bruschetta was amazing!) and salad are going to be the entirety of my meal. read more

Just enough away from Harvard Square makes it feel less touristy. Food was good, but portions (fish and chips) were small for the price. Slightly overpriced in general. I had brunch here a few times and an early dinner once, so the review is based on those experiences. I went in with no expectation what so ever, but the food was surprisingly good. I had swordfish(dinner) which was very good. Mojito was not the best but acceptable, not the worst either. The most remarkable thing about this place is the terrace. On a nice sunny day if it's not too hot or cold, it's a very pleasant atmosphere. Inside is also pretty, wine red walls with dark brown furnitures. read more

Decent service that got better when the waiter realized that we were a loud group, but not obnoxious & had money to spend. While I enjoyed the improved service, I was offended by the attitude. Easy enough to get a table late on a Friday night & most of the drinks were tasty. Nothing spectacular, but I'll probably be back. read more

This place is....weird. You walk in and see a full bar with just enough space to walk forward to the hostess...that doesn't acknowledge customers. To your left is the bathroom -RIGHT in front of the kitchen door. It is dangerous waiting to use it. Next, you have the option of going upstairs or to a small section of tables to your left. HEAD UPSTAIRS! The second level has a few more tables, a bar and then a door to the roof deck. One of the most awkward set up restaurants I have seen to date Roof deck consists of wooden furniture with large round tables, some benches and a grill. Patrons were a cross of awkward couples that were on the verge of breaking up or their first date (not really sure), ya-dudes and US. I don't know what the hell we were but we were tired after the vintage crawl and just wanted a drink. Our waiter was forgetful yet attentive, witty though awkward and overall was just....meh. The glasses of wine are very small and average at $7 -$9 a glass...typical, but what is really lacking is their selection. The food is average priced but again, the menu is ...subpart. Our table ordered cups of lobster bisque and crab cakes. I didn't here any raves and I am sure we would've eaten anything at that point. One of us couldn't exclaim how the bisque was since he forget her bowl. Boo. I can see coming here for just a few drinks, like we did, if not for anything else but to enjoy their roof deck and your own company. P.S Bring a jacket. read more

This is really a 3-star pub, but it gets a 4th star for being well kept and also extraordinarily convenient. Their beer selection is decent, and they sometimes have nice specials like spiked hot cider. It's nice to just come here for a drink with friends. It's best when it's warm out because they can open up the deck. read more

I have to say I was extremely disappointed with this place. On my morning runs I would run by this place and it looked really cool especially the balcony section. However, the food was less than awesome and it was quite pricey. To be completely honest, I have no idea what I ordered which says a lot since I usually remember the first meal at a restaurant if it's really good. One of the only pluses is that the ambiance is pretty cool and the staff are all very friendly. Probably won't be going back. Not to toot my own horn but I have a pretty high standard for food and this definitely didn't make the grade especially with the price. Would rather eat at Trata next door. read more

The rooftop is great but the service and food is not the best at all. I was not impressed by our waitress--she took forever to just bring waters and to bring our food out, etc. And was not that attentive. It was a muggy, hot July day that we went and were able to move from the terrace part which was right where the rain was to being able to sit under the roof part. The food was eh--I ordered the halibut grilled on a salad which was pretty soggy. Overall, not a fan. Would recommend for drinks on the rooftop for sure but not their food. read more

I really wish that I could give this place 2.5 stars, but I suppose I'll round up to three. What it comes down to is that I found this place way over priced. I came here tonight for a girls' night. Wasn't so impressed. I want to start by saying that our waitress was superbly awesome, so I have no complaints in that department. She let our pretty large group occupy quite a bit of table space, even though we were only getting appetizers and not many drinks. But man, oh man, were those drinks overpriced! One of our party ordered one of their specialty cocktail margaritas and it came in the smallest glass possible, was mostly ice and was $10! Now, I know for a cocktail, that's a reasonable price, but her glass was mostly ice, not much booze. Not cool. Also, I ordered a mojito and, while it was good, it was not worth the $12 I was charged. The rooftop garden looked awesome, but we didn't make it out there. The food looked good, and, if it was good, was probably more appropriately priced than the drinks. So, I would come back here. But only if we could drink outside, I made sure to eat something first, and I would definitely stick to beers and not mixed drinks. read more

The service was terrible! Upon arrival the waiter gave us restaurant menus and a specials menu. It was extremely dark and nothing was explained. Although there were electric candles on every table I could barley see my own hands lol. When they waiter arrived he was below sub par. I mean he did even ask if we wanted to start with something to drink or an appetizer. He said very dryly " ready to order". As a former waitress for these prices I would expect an introduction or something smh. When the food arrived we took photos and the waiter came by not to ask how everything was but to scold us by saying "your still taking photos!" Before disappearing back into the dark restaurant. After one bite I realized my steak was actually over the temperature I requested. When he came back to his section to clean off another table I got his attention. He went back and forth with me saying that I was wrong and my steak was in fact medium rare. I explained it was not and could he check with the kitchen. He told me they can't do anything about it. After about a minute of this exchange he finally took my plate. When he returned with out my plate he still insisted that my steak was in fact cooked properly. I explained it was not to my liking. He asked did I want a medium steak I assured him no I wanted a medium rare steak. He then said I was mistaken and I must have wanted it rare. Yes I know ridiculous right. I just stared at him in disbelief and he informed me he was going to get a manager. As soon as the manager arrived he asked me how he could help. I informed him I wanted a medium rare steak. He immediately said no problem. The manager delivered the steak and disappeared. He did not wait for me to cut it open and see the temperature. When I did I could barely slice it with a steak knife because it was RARE. I just ate the edges the best I could. Not to mention the green beans were bland but the crispy onions strings were a nice touch. The cut of strip steak was not quality either so it was overpriced indeed. I will not ever return to this restaurant or recommend it to anyone. In fact in my conversations with other foodies I will make it my personal mission to include this as a restaurant to steer clear of in the neighborhood. Buyer beware! read more

Argrhghh, why America, why? So many million square feet of rooftops, so few rooftops actually used. It's pity it takes putting up with bland, overpriced snacks and drinks to get a view and a breeze on a hot summers day. Food is American standard, but blander (guys, cheese is an important ingredient of nachos), and more expensive-er (said nachos, $8, $12 with chicken). Really went down well with my $12 mojito that was 60% ice. And they know they can get away with it, because the rooftop is shaded and breezy and has plenty of seating. Bastards. I'm moving to Turkey. read more

We decided to try this in spite of some of the reviews just to have the roof deck experience on one of the few real summer nights we've had so far. There was only a 20 minute wait on a beautiful Saturday night, so that was a plus. We waited at the downstairs bar and had a beer. The bartender was very friendly. This is one of the few places I've found that has Franzikaner, my favorite beer, on tap. The only problem is that is was a bit steep at $6 and comes in a regular beer-size glass. But when we got to the roof deck, it was worth the price to get the roof deck experience. It wasn't crowded or overly busy and had a nice atmosphere. Our server was also very friendly and attentive. We each got burgers ($10.95) and even though mine was cooked a bit more than I wanted, it was still really good with blue cheese and barbecued onions. It didn't have that pressed patty look, so Ihey probably make them there. It comes with either fries or a salad. I go the salad that had nice greens. I also had the grilled asparagus that was a bit pricey ($4 for 5 pieces), but usually is, but the flavor was great. The guys next to us had a quesadilla that also looked good. A guy on the other side got the fish dinner and the fish was really tiny. I was glad I didn't get that. So my advise is go for the ambiance and keep it simple with the entrees. Expect to pay a bit more for the drinks, so sit back an enjoy it. read more

Juicy enough burgers. Friendly service. Good choice of alcohol with rotating featured mixed drinks. Relatively priced for the Harvard/central area. If there's a line up and it is summer, then you are screwed for a table. Daedalus is a place where people hang out and enjoy the roof deck. read more

I went here with some friends on a recent trip up to Beantown. This place has great atmosphere and is in an great location. The roof deck is pretty outstanding and the drinks were great. The food was only OK in my opinion. I started a cup of the tomato bisque which was pretty standard, nothing to shout about. It was made better by the yummy pita-type bread they serve. For my entrée I had the risotto special. Normally I avoid specials, but this sounded tasty: risotto with grilled chicken, roasted corn, peas and Parmesan. Sadly, the chicken was pretty dry and the peas and corn were obviously frozen. We spent the night hanging and drinking on the roof deck, so the atmosphere made up for the OK food. read more

There are a few places in Cambridge that have always been my go to place when I want good reliable food. Daedalus was one of those places. The food isn't fancy, and it isn't pretentious. That's what I liked about it. Yes, you did read the past tense correctly, and for very good reasons. Now I need to preface this by saying that it's been a while since I was here. Perhaps a year or more, but I just always thought Daedalus was always going to remain true and not be one of those restaurants that try to "reinvent" themselves. This reinvention failed miserably in my opinion. I knew something was askew when I walked into the restaurant and was greeted not with the smell of steaks, or burgers grilling, oh, no. It was garlic. The entire restaurant reeked of it. I probably would have walked out and gone elsewhere, but I was there to meet friends, so I lingered at the bar and waited with a very strong cocktail. I ordered the Chicken Kabobs with vegetables and couscous. Of course, if I would have been blindfolded I would never have known what I was eating as everything tasted like garlic. There was no discernable difference in the taste between the chicken, the green pepper, or the onion. I'm sorry, I may be unique here, but I like to taste the various flavors of my food; the sweetness of the peppers, the smokiness of the grilled onion, and yes the flavor of the chicken - shocking I know. The risotto was just as bad as the kabobs. Yes, I know risotto has garlic in it, and I'm totally fine to use garlic as a subtle flavor in the background. Again it's about the balance of flavors. But there just isn't any balance in anything. It's all one note, garlic. I have always been a firm believer that the only reason to douse your food with garlic is to cover up the fact that you are not serving fresh, flavorful food. Why else would you want to disguise the subtle nuances of food? It's the blending of flavors that make good cooking, truly good cooking. And here is where Daedalus fails. There is no point for me to go and pay twenty dollars for a meal and only taste the garlic. The only reason I'm giving them 3 paws is that the wait staff is fantastic. The service is top notch. You're actually treated like someone, not just another possible tipper. At least they are still doing this part of their business right. My rating...3 Paws With love from my dog bowl to yours....Happy eating. Shatasdogbowl read more

One of life's finest joys is outdoor drinking; to this end there is a distinct lack of good outdoor drinking establishments in Boston. If find this quite frustrating, go to any other city and outdoor drinking establishments abound - Philadelphia on the patio, New York on the roof deck, Los Angeles everywhere. Living in Cambridge, Deadalus fills this void a bit. Since the creation of their roof deck I would expect that their balance sheet has improved exponentially. I hope that other establishments take a cue from their innovative (at least for Boston) approach. The cocktails are average however the real draw is the setting. An added bonus is that the food there is actually quite good especially considering the reasonable pricing. read more

In terms of value for money this restaurant is superb. The wait for the rooftop deck was at least 35 minutes, fortunately they could serve us dinner downstairs immediately. Perfect as bub was not going to stay well behaved for long and we were there for susteneous! We ordered the "catch" special - cajun spiced tipala and the blackened haddock. At first we were a little hesistant as the dishes sounded similar but the taste were completely different. Importantly, both pieces of fish were cooked perfectly. The fish was moist and just tore away perfectly with a fork. Having just eaten at Atlantic Fish (and paid twice as much) our first response was why didn't we come here! The blackened haddock was rich in spice. We absolutely loved it. The beans and mango salsa were nice palette cleansers. The mango was firm and tangy. The cajun spice special was much lighter in flavour but this allowed you to enjoy the perfectly cooked fish. They were generous with the mash potato (made with lots of cream and butter and pushed through a sieve so not a lump in sight). Again, the mash was so much better than the mash at Atlantic. The broccoli was yum (possibly too much butter for some) but hey you're eating at a restaurant. Of course it has much more salt, butter and cream than you would use at home - that is why it tastes so good. Wines by the glass were pretty ordinary. The German riesling was better than the pinot grigio if you like a sweeter wine. My biggest complaint is that we did not eat here earlier as only one more week in Boston! But we will be back this week and at least one of us will be eating the haddock. read more

The only thing this place has going for it is the rooftop bar. I think if I only had drinks, I'd give it four stars, but the food was really that bad. We started with a salad which was fine, I mean, you can't really screw up a salad. We also ordered calamari and parmesan artichokes. The calamari was rubbery with zero flavor. It was served Rhode Island style with cherry peppers, but instead of marinara, it came with a thick sauce of I don't know what...it tasted like mayo mixed with salsa. GROSS. The artichokes were fried, but also VERY bland. Absolutely zero seasoning on the breading and the "parmesan" was like someone took a can of grated KRAFT powder cheese and sprinkled it over the plate. This dish was also served with a sauce of mayo mixed with who-knows-what. It was very disappointing. Our server was nice, but aloof and too busy chatting with the other servers to get our drinks. Like I said, the rooftop bar is nice, but it doesn't really have that great of a view for me to forgive this experience and go back. read more

Been passing by her for years and always thinking I must check out that roof top. So, this Satruday a few of us stopped in for a drink on a nice sunny Saturday afternoon. We (three ladies andmyself) requested the roof and informed the greeter we were just having drinks which must have angered her. She told us if it got busy we would have to move to the bar. Ok if it was lunch time or dinner time an we were taking up tables I would gett it, but at 3:30 in the afternoon and the place is about 75% empty and only 3-4 tables on the roof are occupied. By the time we left there was only one occupied table and a couple of guys at the upstairs bar. I get it everyone wants to be on the roof but when there is no one around don't act like a dou!$@. HUUUUUGE let down. I went for brunch on a saturday around 1pm. I got myself particularly excited about a review saying, "Definitely try the crab cake sandwich!" The crab cake was more like a crab patty that I would expect from McDonalds. Barely any crab meat and at least 90% filler. My girlfriend ordered a cobb salad, which was decent. Other than that, I asked for one of their alcoholic coffee drinks, and asked if they could just shake it over ice. They were unable to accomodate me and asked me to choose another drink. I've worked as both a bartender and waiter in many different places and would never have denied a paying customer such a simple request. The waiter took our food order, and he had to come back in a few minutes because he had totally forgot our order which he just took 3 minutes before. The decor was also a big difference from what the pictures on the website lead you to believe, but again, I only stayed downstairs. Overall, it was a mistake to choose the place and I will definitely not be going back. read more

Good water, horrible service! First time I need to walk out from a restaurant without even been asked why my party and I decided to leave. 3 waiters at the restaurant upstairs and nobody cared about taking our orders, preferring to keep chatting and ignoring completely our friend's request about us being ready to order. If I would have the option of giving -5 stars to this place, I would gladly do it. The only good thing about this restaurant was the water, which indeed was left at a corner of our table as the menus were thrown by our very 'customer-oriented' waiter. read more

I really hate writing negative reviews, which is why I put this off for so long. . . On a recent (and probably only) trip to Daedalus, I figured out why the menu is so comparatively expensive. You're paying for atmosphere. The roof deck is undeniably wonderful, and if I was trying to woo someone, this would be prime wooing territory. However. . . if all you want is a drink and a snack, I would try elsewhere. I don't want to get into gory details - but long story short - one of my friends had to sub in for our waitress when she disappeared. He did everything but put punch in his own credit card number. Meanwhile, flocks of people were hovering over our table waiting for us to leave. I don't blame them, but it made it really tough to have a nice conversation. It felt a lot more like sitting in a space in the Trader Joe's parking lot on a Sunday morning than sitting in a cute bar on a Saturday night. read more

I am missing summer time to have the excuse to go for drinks at Daedalus terrace, by far the best asset of this bar. I've done the full milieu of what Daedalus has to offer--dinner, drinks and outdoor patio lunch. The first time I went was dinner in the winter, and we had a really great, convivial dining experience. The prices were just a teensy bit spendy but I thought at the time that the quality and experience justified the price tag. Now, not so much. Going there for after-work drinks was a different matter. The bar area is awkward and not conducive to good times. I think we all understand that you pay premiums for drinkies when it means you're in a nice environment where you can see and be seen. Paying that much for a drink and sitting awkwardly against the window makes me sad. But it's been my three lunch experiences that have made it highly unlikely that I'll be taking another chance on Daedalus. It is really nice to dine outside, but I'd also like some service if I'm treating myself to a $15 salad. Where is the waitress? She's gone. You'll never see her again, even when you've made it clear you have a limited lunch time. The food takes forever, and for what it costs, isn't worth it. It would seem that the first, wonderful dining experience I had here was just a fluke. read more
