It's unfortunate because the location is close, the employees are all so friendly and nice, the beer selection is solid, but the food is more consistently average to bad than it's good. Order the standard burger and you'll probably be fine. But most other item's just aren't very good. The problem today was getting a to go order and the chicken in the spicy chick sandwich was super thin, super dry and super burnt. I would have been fine waiting a bit for the cook to cook another piece correctly but to let what we received go out in a to go box is embarrassing. It was gross. If we had dined in we wouldn't have paid for it Ive been hearing more and more complaints from family and friends about your food quality. I ordered the Breakfast BLT that came with about 7 pieces of quality bacon. The eggs were perfectly cooked. The tots were seasoned with an onion salt that gave them a slight onion ring flavor. I didn't notice the 2nd piece of bread until I was halfway done because it was on the bottom of everything so I ate it like an open-faced sandwich. My wife's Benedict was also cooked perfectly. The ham was thick and delicious. 5 stars for the food. The blonde hostess was on it. My husband and I are enjoying exploring the Fair Oaks area as we recently moved here. I have always seen dad's kitchen sign as I drove past Hazel, but I'm so glad we have stopped by a few times! The overall ambience and vibe of the place is very laid-back and cool. They have a wraparound bar and outside seating that is dog friendly! we have come for brunch and for dinner and both times I really enjoyed the food. My husband's burger and fries kind of guy, and the burger is very delicious, the bun is always really soft and quality of meat is supreme! I am a huge fan of Caesar salad I always order it wherever I go, and I will see if this place has one of the best Caesars I've had. So this place never fails to disappoint! I've been coming here for several years now, and the food is always incredible. They have a fun rotating beer and cocktails list which makes this feel fresh and exciting every visit. The overall price is a little on the higher end, but the overall fiber and experience, the restaurant gives off as well worth it. I tried the fried pickles for the first time, and they were out of this world, savory and delicious, of course, dipped into copious amounts of ranch dip. First visit .. Saturday mid-morning I loved seeing they are animal friendly!! Dogs are allowed in the patio, but one guest big dog didn't like the others and I was afraid it was going to attack. I actually really enjoyed the food and the service! It was my first time - but our kind waitress, Payton, did an awesome job explaining what is popular and what her favorite dishes are. We ordered the weekend special burger and the turkey burger with french fries and they were both made well. In my opinion, the food is priced a little too high since it doesn't match the quality, but it's all good. They do have a variety selections from drinks to food and housemade desserts. I understand some of the other reviews mentioned the food was dry or service wasn't the best - but at the time that we went, everything went by smoothly since our waitress along with the other staff members were helpful, which made it an overall positive experience. For a place that was in Diner's, Drive-in's and Dives, it sure didn't meet any expectations. We arrived at 1:15 pm to realize it was an unadvertised brunch menu. The breakfast potatoes were deep fried and unimaginative. The chicken fried steak was extremely thin with under seasoned gravy. The biscuit was a drop style, but only about an inch thick. It looked like it was the last one made and they ran out of dough. The only hamburger on the menu had a bun that was so dry, it fell apart on the first bite. The French fries were steak style and could be Gould on any menu at any average place or in the frozen food section. All I can say is this place must be living on it's former reputation because if people like the food items we ate, I'm disappointed in the Fair Oaks food culture. Wait staff was sub par. Super yummy brunch spot (and I imagine any meal spot), that is super cozy inside! The staff is attentive (but not too attentive), nice and they seem to really enjoy working here. I love the decor and the bar is just too cool! I got the California omelette and my love got the ham and eggs. Really surprised how many good reviews Dad's Kitchen gets. Last 3 times I've been here I've gone away disappointed. Today is my last time for Dad's Kitchen, FO. The thing that bothered me the most today was the S-L-O-W service on a night where the restaurant was not that busy. Waited at the front counter about 5 minutes or more before anyone even came out to acknowledge my guest and I. Waited at our table for 10+ minutes before a waiter came by to introduce himself. Ordered 2 waters and 2 beers. 20 minutes later still no water and still no beers. Went to check on it. "Oh, they will be up soon". Are you brewing the beer or serving it? Another 10 minutes , 30 minutes total after ordering, the beer arrived. "Where's our water?" That finally came later after I asked for it again. Ordered fish and chips. Both mine and my guest's were soggy, over cooked, well-done fish. At that point I was deciding, do we just send it back and say this night was not meant to be? Did not want to go elsewhere and start over, so we ate the greasy, overdone fish without saying anything. It was not worthy of the two stars I've posted above. $60 plus+tax for two very mediocre dinners and a beer. Probably should have gotten another beer to wash the taste of overdone, greasy fish out of my mouth, but would it take another 1/2 hour to get it? Life is too short for poor service and marginal food. Will be talking this establishment off my list. read more

For those of you craving good old American comfort food, "Dad's Kitchen" will have you covered. Their main focus are their mouth watering burgers but also a nice variety of sandwiches, salads, appetizers, and even full-on specialty plates. I had first visited Dad's way back in 2010 at their original location directly on Freeport Blvd. However, this was my first time dining at their Fair Oaks location. Situated directly on Sunset Ave. and about 1/2 block away from Hazel Ave, this Dad's location is actually kind of hidden in the sense that its away from the busy street. That actually adds to this being a standalone family restaurant. And its a perfect location since they get a lot of customers from Fair Oaks, Orangevale, Citrus Heights, Folsom, and Rancho Cordova. When my lady and I arrived on the evening of Friday 8/31/18 at around 7:00pm, it was a packed house; both inside and out. We patiently waited for about 15 minutes before our table is ready. Since the weather was perfect, we decided on dining outside which offers very generous seating. The inside was also spacious that offered plenty of ample seating. This place can almost pass as a brew pub since they have a very generous bar with a full-on beer menu as well as a nice wine and cocktail selection. Service here was very efficient as our waitress was quick in bringing out waters and eventually our drinks. She went with their strawberry-lemonade margarita while I had a pint of their craft beer. As far as the food, I decided on ordering something other than their burgers so I went with their "Meatloaf Plate". This consisted of a thick cut of glazed meatloaf with their house-made honey hardwood smoked bacon wrapped completely around it. This also included garlic mashed potatoes & gravy and buttered corn on the cob with Parmesan cheese. As far as the time it took from what my order got placed to when it was brought out to my table, it was only 7 minutes. Which gave me the impression that they probably nuked all the items in the oven. Either way, the taste of my meatloaf was delicious and hit the spot. I loved the saltiness of the caramelized bacon combined with their house-made gravy on the meatloaf. The mashed potatoes were also creamy as I loved the chunks of potatoes inside and the gravy drizzled throughout. The corn had a seared roasted taste to it much like how my mom used to cook it at her house. Since it was a Friday evening, we figured why not indulge a little bit more? So we ended up sharing their "Macaroni & Cheese". Oh my goodness this was huge and very filling. There was three types of cheeses (fontina, cheddar, and parmesan) complete with a healthy dose of Panko bread crumbs on top. Definitely worth every penny of the $8 we spent on that. All in all, "Dad's Kitchen" in Fair Oaks is a fine dining establishment if you're not counting the calories while looking for huge portions that will get your belly full. When I factor in the above average service, sizable portions. and overall experience, I will give this place a very respectable four stars. read more

Their sauces are watered down, and they have started skimping on ingredients to cut costs. Unfortunate, since we live close and this is a nice location. We had to ask three times just to get silverware. The servers interrupted us, mid conversation, to ask if those who had just received their plates, moments ago, were finished. So weird. This excellent neighborhood grill and bar has streamlined its operation over the years, and the smaller menu and reduced seating capacity have helped the kitchen to better keep up with the orders. The regular menu is usually augmented by monthly specials. While long waits used to be the norm, service is pretty dialed in at this point. The food is great -- the Dad's Burger may be my favorite in the area, and the Spicy Chick is tasty, crunchy, and huge.
