Shoutout to Folsom, CA. Poppy's Bar & Que. Before walking on the Johnny Cash Trail, we decided to try out Poppy's Bar & Que on East Natoma Street across the street from the community center. We saw the smoker in the front of the building. I do luv me some good ole BBQ. So off we went. We ordered a double down plate $26: two 7oz protein choices with cole slaw on brioche and an 8 oz side choice. Brisket and pulled pork were our protein choices with and potato salad. We bought another side, macaroni salad. We requested that the pulled pork be placed on the side and additional sauce. I dislike being that customer with persnickety preferences. But we were, and they didn't blink an eye. Super accommodating. The pulled pork had a deep smoky flavor. Tender shredded pieces. Mmm. The sauce was served on the side. That too was delicious. Hubs had the brisket and wolfed that down before I could swipe a piece. Darn. The potato salad was tasty. Slightly tangy, which I really liked. The place is family owned and operated. It's a sports bar and family friendly bbq joint. Giving off family friendly vibes. But hey, a bar and family friendly? Yes. They both co-exist harmoniously. Talking about sports. The TVs of course are tuned onto sports. All of the screens are strategically placed throughout. They even have framed signed football jerseys from USC Trojans, Denver Broncos, and 49ers to name a few. Pretty neat. read more

I really wanted to whole heartedly like this place: -Overall, food was good we really enjoyed our brisket sandwich and the cheesy potatoes. Super delicious! - Nice little bbq joint and enjoyed the ambiance, there is a couple games inside you can plan and looks like a full bar. Areas of Improvement - Server told us it was her first few weeks at work. Two times I had to go up to the bar from outside because she didn't check on our table the whole time we were eating except to drop off the food. Mind you, the entire restaurant was dead inside with maybe one other customer so shouldn't have been an issue. - We informed her one of our waters spilt and she proceeded to hang flag poles for about 5 minutes until getting back to us with a new water. I really don't want to harp on servers but it's hard for me to not notice, when I have server experience personally. - We would have really enjoyed the nachos but just a little feedback- toppings could be spread out more evenly cause once you eat the top few nachos nothing is left on the bottom layer. Honestly they have a nice little bar for watching sports, with great ambiance! The service was cool, but I ordered the brisket and pulled pork with a side link and potato salad and it was not good. The brisket had a tiny drizzle of bbq sauce and there was absolutely no sauce on the pulled pork, so I asked for some(idk if I was charged extra). Not to mention the meat was cold, I mean wasn't even warm. Potato salad was okay but as far as the meat goes, the brisket tasted dry and leathery and the pulled pork which had 0 sauce on it was almost inedible. I paid and left half the food there, it sucks because it was close to $30 worth of food before I tipped. Did I catch them on a bad day? Idk but chances are I will not be returning for food. They do have a nice bar though I will give them that. read more

Decided to have a late lunch after a day of shopping, rating on Yelp looked promising. The exterior of the establishment displayed military friendly flags... cool even better... happy to support any Veteran owned establishments. Upon entering... vibe seemed as if we were not one of the "usual patrons"... food was decent... bbq place with no bbq sauce on the tables available??? And an up charge for bbq sauce is so weird to me... anyway they do not offer military discount. The subpar food and uninviting small town vibe is a hard pass for me... Great atmosphere. We stopped in after a martial arts class and they were closing in 20 minutes. The kitchen closes at 7pm. Thursday nights, but the bar stays open until 10. We were still greeted warmly and chose to sit at the bar. We orders the brisket, bbq ribs, fries, coleslaw and Hawaiian macaroni salad. The meat was hot, delicious, and moist despite us coming in at closing time. Fries were crisp and hot. Coleslaw was good and not overly sweet. The Hawaiian macaroni salad wasn't really Hawaiian because chopped pickles are added, but they added a nice enhanced flavor if you like dill pickle. I will definitely go back when I'm craving brisket or bbq. read more

Went here two days in a row at lunch time and what a fun new little spot! The bartender Bre was so sweet and attentive. The chef came out and asked if we liked our food (we did!). We had the brisket, mac n cheese, potato salad, wings and mozzarella sticks. The brisket was so tender and flavorful!
