I also had the aloo which was the perfect appetizer, wasn't too heavy and topped with a yummy green sauce. The unique booth seating was a nice touch and the service was wonderful. This new concept is Anglo-Indian with a blending of food and cultures drawing inspiration from the former Portuguese-Indian territory of Goa, Gujarat, and Portugal. It's located in the new M-K-T development in the Heights with plenty of free parking. We initially went to da Gama canteen in their soft opening (June 2021), and they had a few kinks to work out with their food and cocktails. Since then, they have perfected everything, and we have been frequent visitors! The turmeric aioli is very unique. - 5/5 They also have a walk-up counter service café window for breakfast tacos, house pizzas, cocktails, coffee, and chai. +Da Gama Chai (house masala , black tea, and oat milk) for $7 - The chai is great and comes with a Parle G biscuit which made me feel like home. - 4.5/5 +Potato Breakfast Paratha Tacos (masala eggs, smoked paneer, potato, chutneys, cilantro, and red onion) for $9 - This is one big taco with a lot of filling, so the price is almost justifiable. It's very unique as a breakfast taco. This is only available from 9 am to 11 am, so make sure you come early! Just remember, they are closed on Sundays! - 5/5 Overall, da Gama canteen is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston. The atmosphere is nice, and the service is outstanding. My bf and I went here at around 4 and stayed till 6 on a friday and it never really got super busy inside, so you could probably just walk in. The restaurant is beautiful and spacious and our server was attentive and really sweet cause we kept asking for recommendations. The food was great my bf and I got two plates and shared it and it was almost too much for the both of us we barely left anything on the plates. We got a bunch of drinks with our friends I don't personally like the taste of alcohol so i'm not a good judge on drinks but they were all beautiful and there were so many it made it a lot of fun picking them out. read more

Da Gama is slinging goodT food. I had wanted to try on a previous visit to mkt but it was closed. I happily went to the bar for solo lunch. My server helped me narrow down options, which was great. I chose the Chana masala and veg samosas. Then I added a golden milk bc it's now cold in TX. The space is beautiful and warm, music just loud enough and futbol on the TV. The Chana was piping hot (in temp) just like I like my good. I wish the chickpeas were more tender, they had more bite and chew to them for my taste. The samosas were fire. I don't know how to feel about this place after being here twice. Dishes are supposed to be small but feel so heavy on my body, even though the taste is somewhat lacking. The only things that have wowed me is the piri piri chicken, pork vindaloo, and all of the desserts. Everything else (aloo gobi bravas, gem salad, samosas, vada pao) have been ok. Among their highlights are their cocktails, especially the Goan Sunset. It's very refreshing, and I must have had at least 4 of those. Their appetizers are delicious - especially the Crab Pani Puri. However, I was a bit let down by the entrees. I ordered both the Goan Fisherman's Curry and the Assado de Bife, and both were extremely underwhelming. My daughter stood for a few seconds and the owner or manager (don't know his role) was so incredibly rude. I wish I could give more than five stars to this restaurant because it definitely deserves it. Perfect ambience for a date night. We first started off with the aloo Gobi bravas which was packed with flavor. The Boondi is a perfect touch as it brings some crunch to the dish. Next we got the kulcha which was a cheesy buttery naan with a sweet chutney - it was phenomenal. My best recommendation what is contrary to what I usually do is to keep each dish separate and move onto the next dish after you're done with the first. Just keeps you focusedon what each dish has to offer. For the main course we ordered the piri piri chicken - my husband describes his chicken as buttery soft and cooked to perfection when paired with the raita. I ordered the milho kofta - this dish was a phenomenal twist to malai kofta and would 100% order again. The kofta was clearly just cooked as it was perfectly crisp. My only suggestion is that they replace the current corn with fresh corn to elevate to dish. I got the saffron G&T and my husband got the old monk carajillo. Did love the saffron drink, however, it was quite strong in a good way. The old monk drink was fire especially if you want to wake up. We never get dessert but we did today - ras malai cake is to die for. This is such a cute spot that is located in such a cute area! I believe this was my first time having Indian food at a restaurant and it was such a pleasant treat! The majority of our dishes were flavor filled. Particularly, the vada pao, the aloo Gobi bravas, and the saag paneer (holding the fried paneer). I had high hopes for this restaurant since we're fans of Oporto (same ownership). However, I didn't feel like it provided a comparable experience. The menu was really interesting and there were a lot of enticing dishes to choose from. We tried: -Fofos de Bacalhau: pretty tasty but I think I liked the ones at Oporto more. -Octopus Xec Xec: my least favorite since the texture was odd -- it was mushy in some spots and even slimy (not the texture I want from octopus). -Beef Mishkaki: good flavor but a bit on the dry / tough side. I did appreciate the ambiance here. Their patio was nice and we were able to bring our 4-month-old baby in an infant car seat. The service was fast and attentive but a bit cold. Overall, I feel like the flavors were much better than the textures here and you really need both aligned for a top-notch experience. read more

We sat outside so did not get as much attention as possible but even asking the busser twice for water and the food runner for salt directly we did not get it. The waiter was pretty good, enthusiastic mostly. It was not on him but I let him know the service gap I experienced. He did apologize but then tried to "blame shift" which was too bad. Da Gama restaurant is located within the thriving MKT Heights. It's next to Rakkan Ramen and Casa Nomad. There is plenty of private lot parking because the MKT functions like a one-stop destination within the Heights with food, leisure and shopping. It is owned and operated by a husband-wife duo, who also runs the Oporto fooding house and wine. They each bring their own ethnic cultures into the food, inspiring from the Portuguese-Indian territory of Goa, Gujarat and Portugal. I would recommend making reservations, and I made a reservation about 3 days prior to our dinner. There are about 4 booths and 10 tables in the main dining area. There is also outdoor patio dining available. FOOD: Charred Sourdough (Sourdough with Bullet Butter, 3/5): Too much butter.... and seemed like there was olive oil incorporated. There are about 6 slices with a hint of spice. 3 Chili Paneer (Paneer Cheese, Peppers, Tomato, Crushed Cashews, Pineapple Raita Naan, 4/5): I loved the flavors, but the paneer cheese was somewhat rubbery to me. I was actually a bit let down by the paneer. Otherwise, we enjoyed this. Crab Pani Puri (Puffs, Lump Crab, Avocado Puree, Chutney, Coconut Pani, 3/5): I was rather surprised when I took the first bite because I thought it was going to be a warm appetizer dish, but it's a cold appetizer dish with a decent amount of crab. It's not something that I would order again though. It's basically a light, airy pastry filled with crab and avocado puree. There is a hole on top of the pastry, where you pour some of the white coconut pani in. Beef Mishkaki (East African Charcoal Grilled Picanha Beef Skewers, Bullet Butter, Yucca, Raita, 4/5): We absolutely loved the spice in this. It was juicy and flavorful. There are 4 skewers with about 5 beef pieces. The yucca was okay. Banana Leaf Branzino (Whole Sea Bass in Banana Leaf, Goan Cafreal, Pulao Rice, 4/5): This was delicious. It was good quality fish within a simple dish. All it needed was a squeeze of lemon juice, even though there was green masala within the sea bass. It's a somewhat buttery yet milky taste. The sides in this dish were great, especially the pickled vegetables. The service was great! Our drinks never touched bottom, and the server was around often. No complaints. Would I come back? Yes. A lot of what we wanted to order was out for the evening. What we did order we weren't blown away by. We went off a lot of suggestions from the server, and I'm not sure if that was the best move. The server had an attitude and I wasn't sure how to interact with him. The best part of the dinner was the dessert. It was like a middle eastern tres leches with pistachio. On August 26, I went to Da Gamma with some friends. The meal was good and nice service. I paid my bill with a credit card. The same day an order was place with Gordon Food Service in the amount of $1049.63 using my credit card number. Gordon Food Service sells food in large quantities for restaurants. I as a senior I do not use large quantities. Let alone $1049.63 worth of food. I would suggest using cash or be sure you watch your credit card statement. read more

This place is fast becoming one of my favorites. I just love the vibe and the food is great too. The dish you must get here is the goan fish. I was skeptical about fish with curry (I generally stick with one of the land meat animals) but this did not have the typical fishy taste and went very well with the light curry flavor. It also had a lot of crab meat in it which was an added bonus. I am still so excited that I got to try this place! I made reservations after reading reviews that recommended to do so, but my friend was done with a prior engagement earlier than planned, so we got there an hour early. Surprised to find out that we sat down with 10 minutes of happy hour left to spare and we ordered away! The happy hour gin and tonics have basil seeds in them and I thought that was interesting; reminded me of chia seeds! The hummus and empanadas were by far my favorite, so full of flavor(!), but everything else we ordered was delicious, too. The bread that came with the hummus was AMAZING - it almost had a sweet, honey taste to it. Note to Yelp friends: bury me with bread, plz. We ordered a second drink after eating - I didn't love the Paloma but it was okay... my friend ordered the Panaji Sling and I highly recommend! The bathrooms were clean and the staff were nice! I always love to try new places, so of course I was drawn to Da Gama, sister restaurant of Oporto Fooding House & Wine! They are nestled inside the M-K-T off of N. shepherd!! da Gama is located in BLDG 5 inside the MKT. The M-K-T is a great location and offers shopping, dining, and entertainment options as well. There's plenty of parking areas and since they are still somewhat new, not all retail spaces have been filled, so parking may change in the future. Back to DA GAMA! The ambiance is refreshing and still cozy! There are a lot of little details like The high tops, booths, and two top variety they offer so it's great for a date or a large group! Love the door and door handles that lead inside the restaurant as well as the restroom... Bright colors make me happy so that was great too! All the pops of yellow and orange! We were served and greeted by Allie (prob misspelled her name) and she was great! Gave us time to peruse the menu and order some appetizers...made some recs and allowed us to just explore the menu ourselves. We ordered: crab pani puri chamucas or samosas the daily special: sous vide lamb dish Basmati rice Ras Malai (a fail) do not recommend Mango Kulfi Ice cream (highly recommend) Soooooo...not a huge fan of the crab pani puri, except for the light outer crispy shell it sits in, I didn't want a cold explosion in my mouth. It was a bit too much for me. Maybe I drenched the crab with too much of the coconut pani, but nonetheless, I wasn't a fan. If you like a kick, the tomato neem chutney that accompanies the samosa is a bit spicy and has a nice kick! I loved it! And the inside of it was so flavorful and warm and had all the fragrant spices and flavors that I love in a samosa! The daily special was great! Now onto the dessert, we tried to be daring and ordered the sponge cake drenched in saffron milk...well I didn't expect to get a fishy, seafood after taste or strong pungent fishy flavor in my first bite. Apparently that's from the saffron! Lesson learned, and not a fan! So the on duty manager swapped us out for some mango ice cream and it was heavenly and so delicious! Refreshing and tasted just the way it's described on the menu. Overall there were a bit of bumps along the way, but a good experience overall. There was also a hiccup with our bill and so they ended up comping our dessert which was a nice gesture. Goa Sunset and Panaji drink were very nice. Tandoori Root Vegetable are 10/10 makes you love veggies more than the meat. Peanut Chicken Tikka was 9/10, Octopus Xec Xec was 8/10 and I was scared of it after I tried octopus at Cancun but this was very well cooked and flavor was great. Its been a while since I've been wowed by the party in my mouth and Da Gama sure did deliver. I don't have anything bad to say about ANY of the dishes I had. Crab pani puri- yea I missed the heat a little bit, buut I was pleasantly surprised by the chunks of crab in the puri. Dhokla- lovely and spongey with the perfect mint chutney. Lamb ribs- SO tender Pork vindaloo- actually had a little heat to it. Meat was also tender and quite a flavour packed curry. Goan Fish- mellower flavours, mild sweetness from the coconut complements the seafood. Get that Bullet Naan! You won't be sorry. And to close it all out- the sticky date cake was divine! Da Gama is the new sister restaurant of Oporto located in the up and coming plaza in the Heights, called M-K-T. The area is modern, and spacious, which makes parking a breeze. However, the plaza is not fully developed in google maps so directions may be confusing. Nevertheless, it is walkable and easy to find. Upon entering the restaurant, I was thoroughly impressed at the the decor. There are large windows with great lighting, especially for foodies and yelpers. We came with 2 friends and shared a variety of dishes. Despite how small some of the portions were, it did fill us up. We ordered: Blue smoke drink & East Indian G&T 2.0 Crab pani puri - 4/5 - crab was fresh and delicious Gunpowder fries - 5/5 - can't go wrong with fries. Potato-y and turmeric aioli was unique. Da Gama mussels - 4/5 - unique spicy and thicker sauce Goan fish curry - 4/5 - flavorful and fish was flakey. Came with 2 jumbo shrimp. Portion was small to share with 4 people. Bullet naan - 5/5 - made with spicy garlic butter that included Serrano pepper. This was definitely my favorite item! Aloo gobi bravas - 4/5 - unique take on aloo gobi. It was reminiscent of chaat with the the little crispy balls and chutney. Overall, the restaurant has good and unique fusion items, similar to Oporto. In this case, it encompasses more Indian styles and tastes of food. The flavor was not lacking in any item.
