Mostly because they have a fresh product (homemade tortillas matter) and they have figured out how to fuse Indian and Polynesian with Tex Mex. Walter gave great service! He suggested I try both salsas. My favorite was the oregano but there is also a cilantro mint. We ate outdoors. The ambiance was awesome. Come and enjoy! They need more morning business. I've been to Da Gama a few times for brunch and lunch, and this time we came for a Sunday dinner to try the Houston Restaurant Weeks menu. It did not disappoint! Our waiter was kind, knowledgeable, and helped guide our choices from the HRW menu. I had the Caipirinha de Maracujá, samosas, and lamb kebab, which was incredibly flavorful and tender. For dessert, we shared the ras malai cake, gulab jamun, and ice cream. Everything was delicious, the desserts were definitely spice-forward. Upon walking in it looked like a casual modern upscale restaurant. The restaraunt is a fusion between Portuguese and Indian. The service was kinda slow. I tried the bullet naan which had cilantro and serrrano garlic ghee. I also tried the Mums chicken curry. The curry was mildly spicy. It had potato's, chicken, and spices in it. However, it didn't taste like traditional Indian curry. BEEF MISHKAKI was what got them the big gourmand and it was my favorite. The beef was tender. The sauce carrot raita was a nice combination that gave the dish a refreshing Taste. The yuca fries tasted like it had a zesty flavor of lime on the outside. The texture of the yuca fries were thick, soft,and fluffy on the inside. After I went outside and ordered from their cafe to try their pastel de nata which is a Portuguese dessert. One of the first restaurants to open at MKT, Da Gama has continued its success. I've visited multiple times over the years and they always deliver. The warm wood accents and colorful decor inside created a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, the outdoor patio is spacious and lively when the weather is nice. The menu draws inspiration from both Portuguese and Indian cuisines, making it the perfect style to order a bunch and share family style. While the curries and lamb kababs are consistently excellent, my personal favorites are the crab pani puri, octopus and fried yuca. I've been to Da Gama several times over the past few years, but recently decided to try again since they recently received the Michelin bib gourmand award. Reservations are not necessary, but encouraged due to indoor seating can get full. Outdoor patio seating is available with ample lighting and heaters. Self parking and valet option on the weekend. Dined on a Sunday evening with no reservation, but we were able to be seated inside. Server was pleasant and answered any questions we had. Not a major issue, but our server wasn't the one who would deliver our food. The one who did bring out the food didn't know who was getting what food and mistakenly brought someone else's food to our table several times. Didn't expect mix ups like this since I hadn't experienced it here before. The food itself was good. We enjoyed the baked goat cheese (quiejo da Gama), goan fish curry, and the lamb kebab. The fish curry could use a little more spice to it, but it was enjoyable. The lamb kebab was deceivingly tender. It may look overcooked on the outside, but the inside was just right. Flavorful as well. Wished it came with a side though. Overall thoughts - worth trying at least once, but be prepared for small portions for the price point. De Gama took me by surprise! I came here on a girl's dinner, and it's one of those foodie places in MKT that are kind of tucked away, but wow. What a hidden gem! Our waitress was so kind as to go through the menu with us multiple times when we had questions, and she had such great recommendations. To start off, I ordered the banananeira, which was not what I was expecting at all but still really tasty. I expected a sweet drink, like a banana pudding type drink, but it was instead a bit more tart as if it were a green-yellow banana (maybe also a little more tart from the lime and pineapple?). Whatever it was - it was actually really good and refreshing. For my second drink I also got the Goan Sunset. Also delicious, and arguably my favorite. I think more people would like the Goan Sunset as it's more refreshing and fruity, but I did enjoy both of my drinks. For food, we started off with the samosas and empanadas de carne. I really liked both, but I actually really enjoyed having the empanadas with the sauce that came with the samosas. The apple chutney that came with the empanadas was a bit too sweet for me, but I'm really not a fan of sweet sauces with my savory food though. I usually prefer more tangy/spicy sauces if anything, so that could just be personal preference. We also ordered the Goan fish curry, the lamb kebabs, the naan, and the pao buns. Both the fish curry and the lamb kebabs were SO good. I'm not the biggest fan of lamb usually, but those kebabs were great. I personally really liked the pao buns, but my friend liked the naan better to have with the food. (The pao buns are a little sweeter, but man I actually really liked them with the fish curry!) Honestly, the food was so good we couldn't resist dessert. We ordered the sticky date cake and man it was so delicious. I was really craving more caramel sauce on the cake though, but still great. My friend and I came here for a girls dinner and it was such a pleasant surprise. The MKT area has a lot of parking, though it's usually pretty crowded however we got lucky with parking nearby. I'd highly recommend this fusion Indian-Portuguese restaurant for some great food, really delicious drinks and a calm atmosphere. We ordered family style and our waitress was really kind and patient with explaining the menu. The Fish Curry, Lamb Kebab and Garlic Naan were all so delicious. We also ordered some cheese bread and several drinks. Everything was so tasty and it was an overall great experience. Kudos to them for the Michelin Bib Gourmand award for 2025! Came in for a birthday dinner with a party of about 10, and we had a great time! De Gama is so cutesy on the inside with more space than meets the eye from the outside. There's a night vibe with dimmer lighting. The mix of Portuguese and Indian food was interesting and I feel that it should happen more! This place is unique. The food itself was quite good, we tried the cauliflower patatas bravas (a cool take on aloo gobi), quiejo (if u like goat cheese, this one wasn't for me), the Milho Kofta Curry, bullet naan, and rasmalai cake. I had the maracuja spritz, which had sparkling wine and passion fruit--very refreshing. I opted for the piri piri chicken, and it was moist and flavorful. It has a hibiscus glaze and came with very fragrant and spiced gunpowder fries and a turmeric aioli that was quite tasty. The menu said it would take 30 minutes, but it didn't feel like that long of a wait. Out biking along the Missouri Kansas Texas bike trail and this gem of a restaurant was calling our name for a nice little nosh. Locked up the bikes and grabbed a seat on the patio. Very nice ambiance with laid back service and staff. We started with a nice Oaxacan Rabbit Cocktail (a very well balanced Mezcal cocktail). Ordered the yummy yuca fries with an amazing seasoning sprinkled on top (very savory). We also did a Pizette (flatbread) topped with roasted cauliflower and also the blacken snapper with roasted carrots. When I tell you I could have eaten a plate of those roasted carrots. The menu at Da Gama was made up primarily of shared appetizer dishes, all unique and inspired by Indo-Portuguese flavors. This spot is a recipient of the Michelin Bib Gourmand award (not to be mistaken to have a Michelin star). Our group sat outside and our waitress accommodated our table by placing heat lamps around us since it was around 60 degrees in the evening. What we ordered for 5 people: 4.5/5 - Samosas. $14 for 4 samosa: Filling was at a medium spice level, tolerable, flavorful and heavily spiced! These were a great starter. 5/5 - Queijo Da Gama: The sourdough bread was perfect! Garlicy, and toasted perfectly. The goat cheese and tomato chutney resembled flavors of a shakshuka. 3/5 - Butter Cauliflower Naan Pizzette: I couldn't identify the butter curry flavor in this dish. The cauliflower was good but didn't add a lot to the dish. It was a cheese flatbread. The flatbread was delicious though. 4/5 - Milho Kofta Curry: Loved the sweetness of the corn. Kofta was soft and complimented the curry. This dish came with a small serving of rice. 3.5/5 - Lamb Kebabs: I'm picky about ordering lamb, and I'd probably pass on this dish here. I wish there was a stronger grilled/smoky flavor since that would've made up for the flavor. The carrot raita is slightly spicy and a nice addition to the heaviness of the dish. 5/5 - Fried Yuka: This was my favorite dish of them all. Crispy and soft -- just perfect with the dipping sauces that came with it! da Gama is located in the MKT plaza, and is an Indian-Portuguese fusion restaurant. I have been a few times and have only tried the Indian dishes, such as Mum's chicken curry, pork vindaloo, garlic naan, sh pani puri, and gulab jamun. I also tried their cauliflower naan pizzette and the kale and goat cheese naan pizzette. Their social hours aka happy hour deals are pretty good; you can get the naan pizzettes for half off along with some wines by the glass. The garlic naan and the naan pizzettes are crispy, light, and airy. I like to dip the pizzettes in the curry for an even more fusion twist~ My favorite curry is the pork vindaloo; it's spicier than the other curries and has the most flavor. The others are chicken-based. The pani puri was pretty big, but you can eat them in one bite and only come with two. They were refreshing, but I do wish they came with more. The gulab jamun sundae was okay. The balls were a bit hard from being sandwiched in ice cream. I have had gulab jamun where the ice cream is placed on top and the balls are still soft and warm and would have preferred it more that way~ The inside is spacious, and they also have a good amount of seating outside, too, for when the weather is nice. Service can be a little slow when it is packed, and the food takes some time to come out both when it is busy and not too busy during lunch time. I think da Gama is good for shareable dishes, and the deals during their social hours would be a great time to try their dishes. I've had some average take out from this place but I was curious to try it when I was in the area. The service was great despite it being busy! I got the crab pani puri and mum's chicken curry. The crab pani puri was light and refreshing but very small portion size for $14. I likely wouldn't get again because it wasn't enough to wow me. The $17 curry was alright portion, not enough to fill you, and the flavors weren't too mindblowing. The $4 naan was a good portion but was too thick and doughy for my personal taste. Overall, I enjoyed the meal but I'd likely not come back as there are better Indian restaurants in Houston. read more

Food - The crab panipuri was a DELIGHT. Flavorful and light, this impossibly thin crispy shell holds refreshingly flavorful crab salsa mixture. The smoked octopus (Xec Xec) was grilled to perfection (light and tender, not chewy) and absorbed the expert level of smoked flavor usually found from a great smoker. Also the lamb shank was also cooked beautifully, tender and not gamy at all...and atop of a bed of Tajín like briyani. Also ordered the Goan curry which was "meh" after tasting the other items. Da Gama Its Portuguese Indian Food restaurant in the Heights area. This was an old storage that got converted to something like a strip mall, plenty of which cater to food. Da gama is owned by chefs Shiva and Rick Di Virgilio. I was told that they also own the popular midtown restaurant Oportho - a food and wine place which was earlier known as the Queen Vic pub and kitchen. That was very weird coincidence because Queen Vic, when I visited it, was the only pub in the city that sold samosas, and I had loved it so much, and they went and cosed it ! Ambience sets a slow 'eat and relish dinner mood'. Taking pics takes a back seat....The door outside actually melts into the background after dark and you would easily go past it unless the GPS warns that you have arrived at your destination. What we ate: Pani puri - stuffed semilina puffs , potato, avocado cilantro chutney, and orange coconut water ... this was abolutely unique tasting and refreshing. I hope it is still have it on the menu as I didnt see any pics of it from others. A Must Must try. I do hope they still have it on the menu. The restaurant has delicious food. The piri piri chicken was outstanding and came with great fries and a turmeric like aoli which was great. The Sang Paneer was in a fantastic green sauce and the shrimp in chile sauce was very good as an appetizer. The breads were excellent too. Our server was sweet but extremely uneducated on how to serve. Plates were never removed, drinks not refilled and I was never asked if I wanted another cocktail. The worst part is they would bring hot food to the table and instead of placing it in front of the customer they hold it above the table expecting the customer to reach for it and place it down. My fingers have bone on bone arthritis. I have no idea how heavy or hot it is. I can't do that. I can't open a soda can or carry a heavy plate. Our bill was 200.00 for three people. Servers should know how to place a dish in front of a customer. The waitress also put everyone's drinks in front of me to pass out. There was plenty of room to maneuver around the table!! Maybe a 3.5-4? Came around 6:30 on a Tuesday evening and it wasn't too busy. It started picking up maybe around 7-8pm. The atmosphere inside is really nice and spacious with a comforting aesthetic. For food, my friend and I ordered 3 dishes to share: Vada Pao, Crab Pani Puri, and the Pork Vindaloo with a side of garlic naan, all of which had been recommended by our server who was also great btw and very attentive. Of the three, the pork vindaloo was my favorite as it just felt nice and comforting and also had a little spicy kick to it. My next favorite would be the crab pani puri; what threw me off at first was the fact that the crab meat was cold, which was unexpected, but otherwise it was a tasty starter. The vada pao was pretty good with nice flavors but it didn't really stand out in any way. I also ordered the Batida de Maracuja off the drink menu, which I quite enjoyed as it was creamy with a little twang from the passionfruit. While the overall experience was good, I was hoping to be a bit more wowed by the food here, which is where the 3.5 comes from. However I do think it's worth giving a shot! read more
