We came here for our anniversary dinner and really enjoyed the cute little restaurant, the service and food/drinks. I got a mocktail, and they didn't have a specific menu, but when I told them the ingredients for a lemon fizz spritz, they nailed it. We ordered the eggrolls, pork belly banh mi and the noodle dish for our apps and they didn't disappointment. I just wished the noodle bowl had more noodles since the veggies/sauce seemed uneven. For dinner, we got the fried rice with shrimp and fried fish. Both dishes were actually very good! I was impressed. They gave us a complimentary dessert, and I really liked the Ca Phe Flan! We were intrigued by the concept of this Vietnamese-Peruvian fusion restaurant. This is a nice restaurant with a beautiful interior and very attentive service. Great ambience for a date. I got the pasta alla huancaina, and my date got the pork belly banh mi. We also got the patatas bravas from the happy hour menu. The pasta dish had two huge pieces of chicken covering the pasta, while the banh mi was tiny. The sauce for the potatoes was really interesting, and I liked it. The pasta was very good, although it felt like there was too much chicken in relation to the pasta. We decided to try Alora out on a whim, and it was fun tasting some new dishes to discover what Peruvian-Vietnamese fusion is! The menu is concise, so we were able to try most of the dishes. The food came out quickly and beautifully presented. ** Peruviet ceviche: tasted fresh, nicely textured, and pretty. We all liked this one :) ** Thai basil and chile chicken wings: was heavy on the fish sauce flavor, and wings were grilled nicely and served hot. The bed of crispy noodles soaked in the sauce well, yum~ ** patata bravas: tasty pillows of potato, yum! I liked how they were seasoned, and they didn't even need the aioli. Could be crispier, although they were still one of my favorites. ** Shaking lomo saltado: I thought the meat was a little too tough for me, but my friends polished this one off and enjoyed the savory sauce with the rice. The meat portion is kind of small so we ended up ordering two. The cooked tomatoes and peppers were the highlight to me on this one. ** Al pastor pork chop: veryyyy smoky. I love pork chop, but the flavor wasn't for me, since it just tastes like smoke. My friends said it was juicy but I couldn't really tell because of the smokiness! ** Octopus anticucho: came with a creamy yellow sauce that was almost cheesy in a good way! The octopus itself was seasoned with something my friends were not fond of and wasn't chargrilled or crispy since there was so much sauce. Probably wouldn't order again, but we did enjoy dipping the pork chop and steak into the creamy sauce :P ** BBQ king mushroom: didn't really have a strong flavor profile (still enjoyable), but the mung bean sticky rice cake hiding beneath was the star-- it was soft with just a slight crispy exterior and totally delicious! The texture of the king mushrooms was not too chewy or hard and easy to slice. ** Kem xoi: pandan sticky rice with coconut ice cream-- my favorite of the night! The pandan rice was served warm and was so soft and flavorful. I wished the ice cream was served on the side because it melted so quickly, but the toasted flavor of the coconut is even better than normal coconut ice cream :) next time I'm ordering one for myself! The inside is super cute-- leaning towards a refined floral green theme, and they have their own covered patio as well. It was pretty sleepy inside with half the seats taken so not too loud, making it a perfect place to catch up with friends. There's a dedicated small parking lot which was super nice, and the service was friendly and attentive (but not overly so!). Breading of the chicken was slightly thick. - Ceviche was good, the nuoc mam in the sauce made it too salty for me though. Used to be Kau Ba on this corner, but with a nice concept refresh and a little bit of a face lift they make the new idea for Alora taste great. Our server was excellent in making suggestions, went almost solely based on his recommendations and had an excellent lunch. Super focused and tight menu, absolutely love this! It's a Peruvian and Vietnamese fusion that mostly comes through as something delicious and new. It doesn't feel like they're just palette swapping dishes between the two cuisines, each of the menu items feels like it belongs. The ceviches are light and flavorful, the spring rolls are like a stewed chicken in a bite, and the croquettes and tender and fun. All of our main dishes were cooked perfectly, no chewy octopus here. We cleaned each plate including the sides the come with them. Even those sides were prepared with care, yuca that melts and rice that I couldn't put down really rounded out our meal. We were excited to try Alora given that we love Vietnamese and Peruvian food. The place itself is relatively small, so definitely make reservations in advance. Vibe is very nice - definitely a cool spot to checkout. We started off with cocktails - I got the Ponces, which was basically a pisco sour. And my partner got the hanoi quarter. We then shared several items: - ceviche: 4/5 - we were surprised how big the fish was cut for a ceviche - made it a bid hard to eat. - octopus - 5/5 - delicious! Love the lotus root with it. - stir fried veggies - 4/5 - one of the sides, lots of yummy vegetables - great for a side - fried rice with shrimp -3/5 - the fried rice itself was delicious, but the fact that they charge $22 for this small side bowl with 3 shrimp is a bit ridiculous. We also shared both desserts- - cinco leches - 4/5 seemed like a pretty standard tres leches - it was good! - kem xoi- 5/5 - i think i audibly said "wow" after I tasted this. LOVED it! I love pandan in general - and I really loved the cold coconut ice cream with the warm pandan sticky rice, plus the added crunch really perfected it. The first couple of bites were amazing, but unfortunately the way they plate the ice cream on top of the hot rice causes it to melt immediately, which makes it mush. What immediately drew me to this restaurant was that it served Peruvian-Vietnamese fusion cuisine. I was curious to see how they would marry two different flavor palettes together and had to check it out myself. Alora replaced what used to be Kau Ba. Parking is very limited. There's a small lot with up to 5 spaces next to the restaurant. Otherwise, you'll have to find street parking. I didn't make reservations beforehand but luckily they had availability. The service here was outstanding. I wish I got our server's name but he was very attentive the whole dinner service. He frequently came back to refill our water and even offered me a small glass of water and a napkin to clean my shirt sleeve when he noticed some of the food got on it. I ordered The Ponces for my cocktail. It surprisingly came out on a bowl and not your usual cocktail glassware. It was subtly sweet and smooth from the eggwhite. We ordered the Peruviet Ceviche as our appetizer. The fish was super fresh and I kept going back for the sauce which had the Vietnamese influence by using nuoc mam. It had a good mix of salty and sour flavors. The Peruvian influence came with the addition of Inca corn sweet potato. I liked the difference in textures between the crunchy corn kernels and the fish meat. For our main course, we ordered the Octopus Anticucho and the Pasta Alla Huancaina and shared both dishes. The octopus was super tender and the huancaina sauce definitely had a kick. I'm glad we chose the dishes that we did because all of the spice balanced out with the creaminess of the pasta. You could taste the queso fresco and what I'm guessing is egg. The chicken was breaded perfectly and had a hint of sweetness. Somehow we were able to make room for dessert and ended our meal with pandan sticky rice and coconut ice cream. Anyone who reads my reviews knows how much I love pandan so ordering this was a no brainer. I will say that the pandan flavor wasn't that prominent but it was still a good dessert for us to share. I know they are still in their soft opening but it legit took 20-25 minutes for our drinks to come and also 20-30 minutes for our dessert to come out. Really enjoyed our meal here! Peruvian/Vietnamese fusion spot where Kau Ba used to be. We had trouble finding parking, which always feels like the case in Montrose, but we called the restaurant for help and they told us they had a dedicated lot. We wouldn't have known it was there because the signage wasn't obvious; it is a shared parking lot for Eurostone Marble and Kau Ba, inside a gate with a white and blue-trimmed building behind it. Once we found that, everything else was a breeze. Cocktails: Their take on a Pisco Sour comes in a bowl-type glass that you need to drink with two hands, and was very tasty! The Old Fashioned was also good. The Pho-quila was ok, but the Carajillo with dessert was excellent! Food: I had the shrimp vermicelli dish, which was very good! Alora is a Peruvian Vietnamese restaurant. I found out about Alora through Instagram and thought it was an interesting fusion. My friend and I decided to try this place on a weekday for lunch. We met up a little before noon and it was just us before a few more customers showed up. The hostess was friendly and our server stayed on top of serving us and checking in on us from time to time. Food wise, we ordered 3 items to share - Green Papaya Salad, Peruviet Ceviche, & Octopus Anticucho. The salad was fresh and flavorful. It actually reminded me of eating a deconstructed banh mi. I think it's because of the beef and how it was seasoned (similar to thit nuong/chargrilled pork) along with the carrots. This was my friend's favorite dish. The Ceviche looked like a Peruvian Ceviche, especially with the corn and sweet potatoes in it. It was more sour than what I was used to. I think that was probably done to mask the nuoc mam/fish sauce because I couldn't tell that was in it. The fish was very fresh. Lastly, the octopus was my favorite dish. I thought it was a great representation of both cuisines. It looked like a fusion dish especially seeing the grilled octopus and the fried lotus root. This dish was definitely on the savory side and was so tasty. As far as ambiance goes, it was a nice place to get something to eat and catch up with a friend. The inside is beautiful with a green vibe and natural light coming through. Overall, everything went well. We finished our dishes. We came with friends for dinner on Saturday night during the soft opening. We were excited to try the new concept in the previous Kau Ba space. We arrived for our reservation at 7:15 and were taken directly to our table. We were provided dinner menus but weren't given cocktail menus until asking for them when they came to take our drink order. We placed our cocktail order as well as our appetizers. The appetizers arrived first with the cocktails taking about 20 minutes to arrive. I understand that it was a soft opening but the service throughout the evening was incredibly slow. We were seated at 7:15 and didn't leave the restaurant until almost 10. The patatas bravas that we ordered arrived 30 minutes after our main courses and we had to ask about them 3 separate times and the dessert took a full 30 minutes from ordering to arrival. Onto the actual food... We ordered the chicken wings, ceviche, crispy spring rolls, lomo salted, pork chop, stir fry veggies and fried rice with chicken. The spring rolls were bland and not all that crispy, ceviche was cut a little thick and the sweet potatoes had a bizarre texture. The lomo saltado had great flavor but the dish was a pretty small portion size, same goes for the fried rice w/ chicken. The pork chop was a good size portion and pretty delicious. For dessert we ordered the Kim Xoi and that was also pretty good. Overall based on value, food and service I just don't think I would recommend this restaurant to a friend. The day I visited happened to be their first opening day. They are located in the previous location of Kua Ba, a Viet restaurant that was named on the Michelin guide but closed down. You might not know by the sign out front as it is still the old name. I did not visit Kua Ba, so I am not sure how things have changed. Inside is a very vintage-modern design with wood tables, warm lighting, a wood bar, etc. Their menu is pretty simple with a handful of appetizers, entrees, and sides. Everything on the menu is either Peruvian or Viet based dish with a twist from the other cuisine. For starters, we tried the PeruViet Ceviche and Causa de Cangrejo. The ceviche was really tasty and not overly acidic, which is how I like it. The Causa is like a fried crab cake and was probably my favorite dish. For entrees, the shaking lomo saltado was my favorite. It was shaking beef with potatoes and garlic rice. The garlic rice was AMAZING. The Ca-Ri shrimp noodles was very tasty and rich. The pasta alla huancaina is mildly cheesy and has a fantastic fried chicken. It was very crispy and had a mildly sweet sauce. The deserts were decent as well. The coconut ice cream and sticky rice was very tasty and had a great contrast of cold ice cream and hot rice. The cinco leches cake was mildly sweet but a bit dry in the center. We split these dishes between four people, but I honestly left still mildly hungry. Alora is positioned as elevated casual dining (I like to think of it as semi-formal dining). I had the seafood parihuela and I swear I couldn't taken a bath in the broth. The service was top notch; quick, efficient and friendly. I sat at the bar and ordered a margarita to start & when i tell you that margarita was exactly what I needed on this lovely Friday afternoon. My bartender/waiter recommended the Calamari(10/10), Thai Basil chicken wings (personally didn't care for them so the waiter took those off my bill) & the Causa de Cangrejo (8/10 so I had to order it. From my knowledge, Alora is Michelin recognized Kau Ba reborn as a Vietnamese and Peruvian restaurant. But from what we gathered from our server, it's under different management and chefs, and there are no ties to Kau Ba. Oh well! We unexpectly came on opening day for dinner, and we were seated immediately. It had a good amount of people, but it wasn't too overly crowded. Our server was so kind and friendly, I wish I got his name, but he took such good care of us. Between four people, we got shared PeruViet Ceviche, Causa de Cangrejo, Shaking Lomo Saltado, Ca-Ri Shrimp Noodles, Pasta alla Huancaina, Kem Xoi, and Cinco Leches Cake. I'll do you a favor and cut right to the chase- the PeruViet Ceviche and Shaking Lomo Saltado are musts. The ceviche was delightfully refreshing, the leche de Tigre was AMAZING. We wanted to savor it more and asked for something to dip in it (maybe that's sacrilegious, idk but they had to ask the owner for permission) and they gave us lotus chips. Shaking Lomo Saltado was great. The garlic rice was to die for, and it was shaped in a pyramid! How cute! We got to meet Chefs Makayla and Diego, and they were very nice. Overall, I think Alora was a nice visit, but it is definitely on the pricier side. It no longer has the vibrant, fun vibe that Kau Ba had, but it definitley feels more elevated and polished. For the price, I think Alora could do a little more. The dishes were good, but there could be more oomph or larger portions. Our server was the highlight of the night! The service was quite attentive, waiters came by often and were quick to provide menus drinks, etc. Overall I think this is a great addition to the Houston food scene. The blend of Peruvian and Vietnamese is not one I've seen before and they meld together really well. As far as the food goes, the ceviche was by far the highlight of the meal. The flavors were great and they had those big Peruvian corn kernels and canchitas. The other appetizers we ordered were just okay; the chicken rolls were lacking in flavor and I didn't like the sauce they came with, it had a little bit of a strange tangy flavor. The chicken wings were fine, nothing special. For our entrée, we split the fried fish and enjoyed it and it was a decent portion size, but I've had better fried fish elsewhere and for the price I just didn't think this dish was worth it.
