I have never wanted to review a restaurant faster than I have D'Mangu. I. CANNOT. BELIEVE just how good this food is. I sat down, opened my takeout container, and let the steam whisk me away to Zona Colonial. THE MEAL I had pollo guisado (stewed chicken) with arroz con habichuelas (rice and beans) and vegetales (vegetables). The chicken was out of this world. A hearty, full-bodied sauce with a smoky flavor was a great jumping off point. It's still in my nostrils. It reminded me of sitting in the kitchen next to my grandfather. Some carribeans like bone marrow. I am one of them. I happily dipped my bones in the leftover sauce and sucked out as much marrow as I could. So good! The rice and beans were wonderful - full of flavor, not too salty, cooked to perfection. The vegetables were a nice touch. Places like this usually offer bread and salad. My daily special combo inlcuded the rice/beans, choice of meat and either bread OR salad OR stewed vegetables. Well Done. THE ATMOSPHERE The restaurant is located in a medium sized house on a major street with parking available via driveway. The dining room is small. There are 3 4-top roundtables topped with glass. The walls are painted a bright yellow with stock carribbean artwork - pictures of the beach and fruit. A counter fronts the entire kitchen area with a buffet-style setup. 3 helpful employees were on hand. Merengue music played in the background and people were loving it which was amusing being that this is a largely african-american neighborhood. No matter. Everyone was there! Kids after school, postmen, E.M.T.s, guys in suits, a mom pushing a stroller. People were dancing while they waited. It's a good thing too. I'm already making plans to go back before the end of the week and I'm gonna need to dance as much as possible to keep the extra pounds off! Stay tuned...

Yellow rice and beans. Stewed chicken. Chicken breast. Cabbage.

Nice Dominican spot serving lunch style trays and plates. If you're familiar with El Latino they have a pretty similar setup. Slightly different food options, and slightly different flavors for the matching foods. Fair pricing for a lot of food. Go in the early to mid afternoon for freshest options - closer to evening seems to be hit or miss and it doesn't appear to be refreshed until everything is done from a tray.

Pernil (pork butt), rice, beans, salad with Italian in size medium for $7.

The place is small, but what they lack in space they make up with flavor! Everything is so distinctly flavorful. I had a medium with arroz con habichuelas, pernil with crispy skin (get the skin, you earned it baby, treat yo self), salad to balance it all out, and a tasty flan. Oh man that flan, it was so Perfect. I will be back here. My husband ordered the large with chicken wings, stew goat, bread and arroz con habichuelas. He also had a scoop of mangú which was to die for. Tastes like a yummy German potato salad, just try it! We left with plenty of leftovers, and very very happy.

Delicious! The yam mash was a real treat, as were the steak and the fish.

Mamia's Island is a serve-you-at-the-counter type restaurant, with a small dine-in area with about 5 tables, but you absolutely don't want to skip trying this place out. My wife and I were on our way to Rochester on a day off, and had plans to grab lunch at a different restaurant there. My wife happened to spot Mamia's as we passed by on Rt 104 and we decided to turn around and give them a try instead, and we were very glad we did. This place was way more our speed. We love ethnic foods, and we pulled in right as they were opening and the small parking lot was already full - good sign. We went in and placed our order - we got a "medium" 2-meat plate with yellow rice, albondingas & pernil, along with 2 empanadas (1 beef, 1 chicken) and an order of mixed (yuca & plantain) tostones. Everything was delicious. The only complaint we had was we did end up getting a lot of connective tissue in our pernil, but other than that, everything was amazing. We did wish the tostones were served with some kind of dipping sauce, but fresh, they honestly didn't need anything. They were seasoned and salted perfectly, the empanadas were amazing, and it was enough food to feed us twice. The total was around $30. We'll be making the half hour drive to get food regularly.

Their meat selection has a lot of different options of chicken, pork, stew style meats, etc. I had their pork and meatballs and they both were so good. The meatballs are soft and sweet which go well with the yellow rice. We also sampled their empanadas and the guava cheese on is to die for! The service was also incredible, I enjoyed talking to the lady taking my order and she shared a lot of history behind the pictures in the restaurant and in general. If you're in the area, it's an absolute go to!
