Steamed fish (middle), char kway Chow Kueh Teow (right), and a stir fried noodle dish (left)
Danny L.

Me and my wife were excited when we found out that there was a Malaysian restaurant here in Rochester. Unfortunately, the excitement ended there. When we went, there were no other parties so we were expecting somewhat quick service. However, that wasn't the case as throughout our experience, we had to wait an extraordinary amount of time just to request things like the check or that we were ready to order. It wasn't the case where it took forever for anything to be done, but I felt that with just one party, the service could've been a tad quicker. The restaurant itself had no music (or maybe it was at a very low volume) so we felt awkward talking to each other and the food itself was okay. We got the steamed fish which was fine (very textbook example of steamed fish but nothing that WOWED me), char kway teow which was fine (again nothing that WOWED me), and a stir fried noodle dish (forgot specifically which one) which was actually pretty solid. For dessert we had their coconut jelly/pudding, their sticky mango rice, and their red bean smoothie, which is where I think they nailed everything but the sticky mango rice. We were wowed during the desserts but wished that entrees had that same factor and hence the score given.

We went here during the summer on a weekend and it was very empty. You can either order with the server or scan a QR code at your table and order that way. Food came out quickly and was well seasoned. The meat was fall apart tender even if the presentation wasn't the best. There were no servers walking around so it was very hard to flag one down when we needed more napkins. Would definitely stop by again but maybe for takeout instead?

Recently discovered this hidden restaurant. I never noticed until my mom and aunt visiting (from out of state!) found it, ha! Located behind Golden Corral and next to AMVETS, makes you think there's nothing really there. Everything I've tried so far is amazing- their pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, coconut smoothie, basil chicken, vegetable tom yam soup have all been excellent. Especially love the pad Thai flavor. The main lady/hostess/I'm guessing owner is super friendly and always gives you a big hi because she remembers her guests :) the only photo I got was my dads soup next time I'll snap shots before we eat !

Roti Canai is something we've seen made on youtube and I had no clue you could get it in Rochester! I was about to fly to Malaysia but this was more affordable. That was definitely the highlight along with the tea. The basil tofu was good but not mind blowing, coconut rice is delicious. The other dish just tasted like more intense pad thai. The radish soup was good but very plain. Would return for the roti canai alone!

The Coco Garden is tucked away in a tiny corner of a local strip mall. The service was nice and the menu was full of delicious sounding and appearing choices. My friend asked the server her opinion of the curry soup and she replied "so/so" while shaking her head. She decided to give it a try, while I opted for a noodle dish with shrimp, chicken, squid and vegetables. The food arrived before we were halfway done with our soup. Neither dish was anything to write home about, both very bland and lacking seasoning. We paid an average of $13/pp. And I'm not sure if I would return.

Shrimp Puff & Pineapple Fried Rice

I came for a late lunch, early dinner. Ordered Puff Shrimps & Pineapple Fried Rice. As soon as I was seated I was asked what kind of tea I like. It was served pipping hot on a big mug like cup. The Puff Shrimps are minced shrimp wrapped in Bacon(4) little pieces with a sweet/sour sauce.I liked them. The Fried Rice had Chicken, Shrimp, Egg, Veggies, and chunks of Pineapple. A good size portion that created left overs to take home. It was delicious. I like that it didn't have too much sauce. I asked for more Hot Tea, Jasmine, and had a Mango Pudin. Refreshing. I will come back to tried other dishes.

Delicious foods, cozy atmosphere, very nice boss and waiters make us feel at home. I love it.

TLDR; not the best Malaysian restaurant but good enough to fill that Chinese Malaysian craving (or to even just try) for the area, since there really isn't any other option. Unfortunate that this is the only Malaysian restaurant in the area cause it truly underestimates how good Malaysian food really is. They have plenty of seating inside but I've only gotten take out from here. A pro is that the portions are pretty generous and they have the typical Malaysian dishes like hainanese chicken, curry chicken, satay, and many of the noodles. But they also have other non-traditional Malaysian dishes like pad thai or just more typical Chinese foods. Considering that it's one of the few Asian restaurants in the area, it does make sense to have more variety on the menu to cater to different taste buds, or to have more items that would be more "common". We got a few noodle dishes like their chow funs, chow kueh teow, hokkien mee, and seafood wat tan hor. It was all just okay. Everything was kind of salty and the flavors weren't exactly there in terms of what the flavor profile should be. Also got their satay chicken, hainanese chicken with the chicken rice, and some other more common Chinese dishes. Nothing really stood out in particular, but I also hold higher standards since I was visiting from NYC and we have much better Malaysian restaurants down there.

One of my favorite restaurants in ROC by far! Amazing for large family style group dinners. Friendly and fast service restaurant with delicious food. They give you a radish soap - which is very refreshing and light. The menu has a vast selection and the portions are fairly big. My favorite dish is probably the sizzling tofu. Always looking forward to coming here when I'm in town! I highly recommend trying the food here.

Basil Fish Fillet w/ Coconut Rice

Understated strip mall location in a small shopping plaza, but the positive Yelp reviews drew us in. We arrived at prime dinner time, and they seemed pretty busy and understaffed - at least in the front of the house. It may be atypical, but our service this night was pretty slow and "disinterested." We were really intrigued by the coconut rice, and my son ordered the coconut fried rice w/ shrimp ($10.95). It was not too heavy, though the coconut flavor was not very pronounced. Decent, basic fried rice. I ordered the Basil Fish Fillet, which I really enjoyed. It had a unique flavor profile and a nice mix of fresh vegetables. Chinese five spice seemed to be the prominent flavor I picked up in the brown sauce, as well as the Thai basil. I'd definitely order this again ($17.95). My wife order the sesame tofu ($14.95) that was served with broccoli. She didn't love it as the flavor was a bit too tomato sauce like, and not the sesame flavor she was anticipating.

Street parking is available, no charge for that. We encountered construction so we had to drive around for a bit but it was worth it. Seated immediately one arriving, we went with a couple appetizers- my personal favorite, the scallion pancake and the steamed bao with BBQ pork belly inside. That comes two to an order so it worked out nicely. Both were exceptional. The scallion pancake is like no other. Extra crispy, incredibly flavorful- and I love their dipping sauce. Vinegary, sweet and sour. The buns were pillowy soft and the pork belly was tender and full of that smoky BBQ taste. For entrees, we chose the Kung Pow Shrimp and the Singapore style curry noodles that came with shrimp, bbq pork, and beef. Both dishes were plentiful. The shrink was definitely spicy, you can see with all of the red chilies in the sauce, with the peanuts and celery pieces cut on the bias for a classy look. The portion on the Singapore noodles was very hefty...we upgraded our rice to fried rice so we had a lot of food today. All in all, this was an enjoyable visit. Since I am headed home tonight I wanted to be sure I had enough food to last me the rest of the day until I get back to ATL. This place ALWAYS delivers! Support small businesses!

PROS: The food! Everything is delicious--noodles, dumplings, Thai, Chinese, stir fry, vegan,…read moreseafood--all of it. I've both dined in and done pickup. Portions are excellent and prices are reasonable for the area. The restaurant is cute and stylish and the open kitchen is a nice touch. CONS: The notification system for pickups is just plain wrong. We were informed our order was ready five minutes before we arrived and then waited another ten minutes upon arrival. I suspect that I know what this is all about: the moral scourge that is DoorDash. Giving early (and inaccurate) pickup times means that the drivers are there before the food is ready and it therefore doesn't get cold and inspire customer complaints. What it does do is create a waiting mass at the front of the store that then causes the kitchen to rush and--forget your lo mein order. So bummer that. You owe me five bucks, Han. I'm a forgiving sort, so we'll likely be back at some point in future visits to Rochester.

It's a small pleasant dining room with traditional Chinese instrumental music playing in the background. Ahh memories The lunch menu has the biggest throw back ... prices from decades ago so you will be getting a bargain if you stop in for lunch or take your lunch to go. Service is pleasant but a bit slow (They were dealing with takeout orders I think.) but I was in no rush and the music was calming to the spirit. Their Hot and Sour soup was thick with ingredients, flavorfully pleasant, and served at the right temperature. My Szechuan Chicken has eye appeal and it was served with a hill of rice. It's always good when the vegetables crunch and these did. Their sauce was tasty and my lunch was really good. My fortune cookie reminded me to take moments to find joy and as the music plays I am glad I stopped in because the world seems far away, the food was good, and I am at peace even though I would have loved to get on my feet to wok and roll!! We tried the following Dishes: Bombay Chicken, Hot Sour Soup, Zen Special Chicken, Chicken Fried Rice with Chicken on Top, Manchurian Fish, Hot Garlic Shrimp, Papaya Salad, Thai Green Curry Chicken, Steamed Chicken Momo, Crispy Ginger Beef I normally wouldn't choose to order soup, as I like to fill up on the heartier dishes but I was absolutely blown away by their Hot and Sour Soup. It's not overly sour and to me it was the perfect flavor profile. It was thick and loaded with tofu and chicken. The Bombay Chicken and Zen Special Chicken were both flavorful and unique chicken dishes. The crispy ginger beef was cooked to perfection; i'd definitely order it again. If you're looking for something tasty to drink their mango Lassi is superb. It's sweet and creamy. I loved it! The Thai Milk Tea was also a knock out. It was sooo good!!!

That includes clearing of items you're done with immediately and no waiting for your bill. I was never rushed; they were just great at their job! Honestly hard to find over the last few years and I was very grateful for that experience alone. The ambience was a very cozy-casual. As I was dining alone this time, I enjoyed the 80s music and videos playing on the TV haha I have to be honest ... I really really wanted to order a roll! But I'm trying to do better about trying other things. So I ordered the Atlantic mussels and the pan seared scallops with veggies with fresh ginger sauce and rice, at a spice level of 3/5. The mussels were very generous and in a large bowl. My biggest pull, aside from the mussels themselves, was that in the description it had a creamy coconut sauce. But I did not taste any coconut and it wasn't creamy. It was broth. It wasn't bad or anything, just not quite what I was expecting. I did appreciate, in general, that there were a couple of mussel options. I hadn't had them in quite some time. The dinner entree was very good. I loved that there was a 1-5 spice scale to choose from. I picked level 3 and was a little worried it wouldn't be spicy enough but it definitely was! It was perfect. The sauce was good and the scallops plump. Veggies were fresh and rice sticky. I had water to drink and it was also very good (felt it deserved a mention lol). I would definitely come back here, but I would definitely order rolls next time! It's what my heart really desires! Side note: great place to indulge in for a whole food diet! I felt very satisfied from my seafood and veggies!!
