I think there was a staff in training. After the food arrived, we were still missing a complete place setting. I was looking forward to the Hainese Chicken but found it over cooked. I wasn't sure if it was reheated or due to the lack of experienced diners, who thought the redness near the bone on a pouched chicken was "raw". Not only was the chicken not served with ginger and scallion sauce, it was drizzled with soy sauce. I didn't taste the chicken flavor in the chicken rice either. Usually it's paired with the Hainese chicken. The mango chicken was too sweet, according to my husband and son. The roti canai was decent, but it had beef or pork in it. Previously, I've only had chicken in the sauce. With only 2 other seatings taken, we were sat next to a mom group of chatty 4 women. They were loud enough for our table not to bother speaking. When I go out with my girlfriends, we usually ask for a table in to corner or back, as to not bother other customers. First off, the staff was very welcoming and pleasant throughout the visit. I had eyes much to big for my appetite, it I absolutely took the leftovers for another day. I had the Roti Canai, Sarang Burong, and sticky mango rice. Each dish was very well made, plated neatly, and tasted delicious. I have never had these dishes but the other reviews led me to these first and they did not disappoint. The restaurant itself is neat and clean, the noise level was low, and the high booths felt fairly private, but not hidden. Me and my wife were excited when we found out that there was a Malaysian restaurant here in Rochester. Unfortunately, the excitement ended there. When we went, there were no other parties so we were expecting somewhat quick service. However, that wasn't the case as throughout our experience, we had to wait an extraordinary amount of time just to request things like the check or that we were ready to order. It wasn't the case where it took forever for anything to be done, but I felt that with just one party, the service could've been a tad quicker. The restaurant itself had no music (or maybe it was at a very low volume) so we felt awkward talking to each other and the food itself was okay. We got the steamed fish which was fine (very textbook example of steamed fish but nothing that WOWED me), char kway teow which was fine (again nothing that WOWED me), and a stir fried noodle dish (forgot specifically which one) which was actually pretty solid. For dessert we had their coconut jelly/pudding, their sticky mango rice, and their red bean smoothie, which is where I think they nailed everything but the sticky mango rice. We were wowed during the desserts but wished that entrees had that same factor and hence the score given. read more

We went here during the summer on a weekend and it was very empty. You can either order with the server or scan a QR code at your table and order that way. Food came out quickly and was well seasoned. The meat was fall apart tender even if the presentation wasn't the best. Recently discovered this hidden restaurant. I never noticed until my mom and aunt visiting (from out of state!) found it, ha! Located behind Golden Corral and next to AMVETS, makes you think there's nothing really there. Everything I've tried so far is amazing- their pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, coconut smoothie, basil chicken, vegetable tom yam soup have all been excellent. Especially love the pad Thai flavor. The Coco Garden is tucked away in a tiny corner of a local strip mall. The service was nice and the menu was full of delicious sounding and appearing choices. My friend asked the server her opinion of the curry soup and she replied "so/so" while shaking her head. She decided to give it a try, while I opted for a noodle dish with shrimp, chicken, squid and vegetables. The food arrived before we were halfway done with our soup. I came for a late lunch, early dinner. Ordered Puff Shrimps & Pineapple Fried Rice. As soon as I was seated I was asked what kind of tea I like. It was served pipping hot on a big mug like cup. The Puff Shrimps are minced shrimp wrapped in Bacon(4) little pieces with a sweet/sour sauce.I liked them. The Fried Rice had Chicken, Shrimp, Egg, Veggies, and chunks of Pineapple. A good size portion that created left overs to take home. It was delicious. I like that it didn't have too much sauce. I asked for more Hot Tea, Jasmine, and had a Mango Pudin. Refreshing. TLDR; not the best Malaysian restaurant but good enough to fill that Chinese Malaysian craving (or to even just try) for the area, since there really isn't any other option. Unfortunate that this is the only Malaysian restaurant in the area cause it truly underestimates how good Malaysian food really is. They have plenty of seating inside but I've only gotten take out from here. A pro is that the portions are pretty generous and they have the typical Malaysian dishes like hainanese chicken, curry chicken, satay, and many of the noodles. But they also have other non-traditional Malaysian dishes like pad thai or just more typical Chinese foods. Considering that it's one of the few Asian restaurants in the area, it does make sense to have more variety on the menu to cater to different taste buds, or to have more items that would be more "common". We got a few noodle dishes like their chow funs, chow kueh teow, hokkien mee, and seafood wat tan hor. It was all just okay. Everything was kind of salty and the flavors weren't exactly there in terms of what the flavor profile should be. Also got their satay chicken, hainanese chicken with the chicken rice, and some other more common Chinese dishes. Yes, this restaurant is still absolutely fantastic and we are still regulars. But I had to add that the whole steamed fish on a plate is my new favorite thing to order. Yes, it's a whole fish laying on its side covered with scallions, ginger, cilantro, and broth. You'll have to pick at it with chopsticks or a fork. I've been coming to Coco Garden since I first got to college and as a Southeast Asian, the food reminds me of home. I usually eat here a couple times a month and it's hands-down one of my favorite restaurants in Rochester. The staff is incredibly friendly and kind. I'm Singaporean, so when I heard there was a Malaysian food place, I was excited to have a taste of home. Some dishes were better than others. I was impressed by the depth of the flavor of the roti canai but thought the other dishes tasted more American Singaporean fusion than sticking to the original eats from the market below my grandmother's home. I was impressed that they offered flavors such as Sambal- something I thought I wouldn't see for a while. Seeing satay is also reassuring to me. I do wish that Southeastern cuisine would take off faster, as I see it creeping into the food scene in larger cities, but I'm also happy that the chefs have offered things that would bridge Rochesterians to a taste of Singapore if they were to go. I thought their flavor s would have been good if they stuck to more traditional vegetables; sometimes the random snap pea, broccoli, etc kind of surprised me because we don't usually eat broccoli in Singapore. We ordered the yam nest with the vegetables in the middle; I miss that fried savory yam dessert you can find in Hong Kong or Singaporean restaurants. This yam was ok but it's best eaten hot. I think had it come alone with a simpler seafood option in the middle, it wouldn't taste as messy. It felt like a chop suey thrown on fried yam combination. Not a bad taste but also a little confusing. I will be back to try their chicken rice, as that is a hometown favorite. Overall, I feel that if you want something different from your typical Chinese/eastern asian cuisine, I recommend trying this place. Singapore is known for a fusion of flavors (coconut milk loving Indonesia meets warm curries meets hokkien fujian food meets sambal love from Peranakan villages). Also consider the Nepali kitchen right behind this place for another change in palate. Can't say I would come back very often because I felt like I went back home, but their roti canai will at least take me to the kopitiam downstairs with kayak toast and kopi-o on a Saturday morning. read more

My friend and I love trying cuisines that are new to us so of course this has been on our list for some time. We had takeout and shared a few dishes; our other friend had the veggie pad Thai and said it was pretty standard (good). We had: -Sarang Burong ($13.95) which was good but the taro is where much of the flavor comes from. -Roti Canai ($4.75), we didn't really understand the hype but it was spicier than expected so maybe you'll feel differently -Malaysian sesame beef ($14.95) because someone on here said it was different from Chinese sesame beef. It was more similar than I expected, but we liked it better than the chicken and than Chinese sesame beef. -Get everything with coconut rice for more flavor. This was enough for both of us and we would have finished it all if we hadn't had ice cream before dinner. I would probably go back to try some other dishes. read more

I can't speak to the authenticity of the food since this is the only place from which I've ordered Malaysian food, BUT I can say that everything I've had has been delicious! They're currently open for pickup only (no delivery) and you can place orders through their website or by phone. I ordered the roti canai and chicken rendang with coconut rice. If you're a fan of carbs, you have to get the roti canai. Get several. I was sad that I only ordered one! It's a fried flatbread that comes with curry dipping sauce and it's fried to perfection. So crispy, so good. The chicken rendang is slow cooked and the portion was generous. I ordered coconut rice as the included rice side. Both were flavorful and very filling. I have to say that I couldn't taste a ton of different flavors in the rendang (it's usually made with star anise, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and other strong spices), but overall the meal was good. I have a new favorite takeaway place in Coco Garden and will be back to try more of their menu! read more

Many of the dishes that you're familiar with have a new rendition to them with Coco... often with a homemade delicious fresh sauce that is not too heavy or sugary. This is an OK restaurant offering takeout only at this time due to the pandemic. I wouldn't really call it Malaysian food, seemed more like Chinese to us. The menu was very large and even had a separate vegetarian section which is always nice to see. Staff were accommodating when we ordered the vegetable bean curd soup and asked it to be put into two smaller containers instead of one large. I ordered the vegetable basil fried rice which was sadly 95% rice and very few veggies. BF ordered the Singapore rice noodles. Taste was ok but his shrimp had a strange texture and after a couple he stopped eating them. If we were in the area again we probably wouldn't order from here again as we feel there have to be better options out there. read more

Fantastic food. We tried the general tso's and the basil chicken. Both were deliciously flavored but the general tso's surprised us by how well they did the breading. It was light and crispy surrounding quality chicken meat with a little bit of spice. The service was efficient and attentive. We had a great conversation with the lady at the checkout about the dishes and she told us they don't use flour in the breading so maybe that's the secret. I love Malaysian food, though the last time I had it was in Philly. I was surprised to find this place in Rochester and decided to try it out. For those who don't know, Malaysia consists of three prominent cultures, that being of the local, Chinese, and Indian culture. The three prominent cultures are so closely knit which has resulted in the best of all worlds creating a plethora of delicious food. As I was here during lunch, I decided to try their lunch special of a Beef Rendang which also came with a radish soup, and also picked up their most popular appetizer of Roti Canai. The Beef Rendang lunch special was about $12.95, and the roti Canai was $5.95. The "roti" was actually a Malaysian paratha, which is definitely more oily and delicious (and unhealthier) than a regular paratha from South India. The chicken curry which came with the roti Canai was delicious. We both loved this dish the most, and to think it was cheaper than the beef rendang. The quality of beef in r rendang was terrible, which is why I have deducted a star. The meat should be soft and greasy, but this was just very fatty and crunchy. This is the first time I have had radish soup, and even though it was part of the lunch special and sorta free, it was tasteless. Maybe that's how it is supposed to be. I'm not sure. It was definitely clean, low on sodium, and healthy, for it tasted a lot like luke warm water with a soapy haze to it. The older lady working at the counter was extremely friendly. I can't wait to go back, and would highly recommend trying their other dishes, though I will try to avoid their beef. read more
