RIPOFF REPORT: It's hard to believe that these other Yelpers even went to the same place! This guy is anything but affordable. We brought in a laptop because the fan had stopped working. Danny quoted $65 to diagnosis it. But when he opened it up to check the part number, the fan started working again on its own. He charged $90 despite not replacing the fan! When I tried to reason with him, reminding him that he had quoted only $65 for the diagnosis, he immediately became loud and argumentative and said, "I could have just lied to you and said I changed the fan, and charged you $135." The fact that defrauding a customer is the first thing that comes to his mind says a lot. $90 for nothing is absurd. I would stay away from this joker. read more

This is in response to Karen F.'s review on 8/11/13. If you haven't done so already, please take a minute to read that review first: I was reading this post and I think it is only right for me as a third person to bring some light upon the situation. I was actually present at the time of this event. Clearly, this customer has a blurred perception of what technical services are. This customer came in an aggressive manner to say her son was overcharged for a recent laptop service. She insisted the she got a quote of $65, but was charged $90. To my understanding, Danny (business owner) rarely charges that little for similar jobs. His hourly rate is $90 and it is printed on every service agreement; the customer even signed the contract agreeing to a labor fee of $90/hour. The woman wanted to know why the job took so long to check a cooling fan and thought that it was not worth it. Some people do not understand the meaning of "professional service". As a professional consultant at a top engineering company, I understand the meaning of providing a service that falls within a skilled profession. I did not go through all that school, training, and experience to providing a service that is not of significant worth. Therefore, I felt a bit insulted when this woman came in complaining about being charged too much for a computer service. There are reasons why Danny has been so successful through the years; he is a knowledgeable expert in his field and can perform services that an average person cannot fathom. Danny, like me, works hard at what we do and try to provide top-notch service to our clients. As an added note, the customer also mentioned her son works and makes $9/hour and thinks that a $90 service is outrageous. Again, the customer signed an agreement to the quoted price before the service began. Clearly, there is a difference in time-value here. If the son wanted to save money, he should have performed that service himself, seeing how his time-value is so low. In fact, Danny was able to save the customer money by not having to replace any parts, which is a plus for any type of service, from a car to a house. That is considered a benefit to both the customer and the technician. I am glad that the customer was able to voice her opinion on Yelp. I am also glad that there are other places that would gladly provide the same service to her. But given Danny's ability and history to provide reliable computer-related services, I do not think that she would be able to find a shop with a greater level of service. read more

As someone who was a Novell Network CNE for years, supporting networks (hw and sw) and who did business programming also, I found this shop to be the best one I encountered in the last 18 years or so. Danny is fantastic - he was able to handle a complex pc rebuild for me in very little time, and at a very reasonable cost for his time and expertise. I think he enjoyed the challenge, in fact, as I wanted to replace the power supply, motherboard, cpu, cooling system, boot drive, etc. - nearly the entire system other than the case. I probably could have bought a new machine by the time I was done buying high end parts for my photo/video editing system, but that's another story - I'm very pleased with the exquisitely cabled result. It's an interesting location - while I was there Danny dealt with a variety of customers, and in every case, including mine, focused on the most pragmatic and cost effective fix possible. Danny has saved the day for me more times than I can count. His diagnoses are always spot on. He's efficient, honest, quick, and will work with you to try to solve the problem for the best price. I had a Dell that was a real lemon. Danny helped me keep it alive until I finally sprang for a new computer - Lenovo this time. The Lenovo performed fantastically for 1 1/2 years..... until I dropped it 6 feet onto a cement floor. Oops. I still had some warranty coverage, so took it to a service center I found on the the Lenovo website. That place was awful - they quoted me $600 just to diagnose the computer and told me diagnosis fee would NOT be applied to repairs. What? I left and brought my computer to Danny. He took one look and said - "sorry, you need a new computer this time." He didn't even want the $65 diagnosis fee! I had him extract the hard drive (which was ok, thank goodness!) and have ordered a new computer. 5 stars for Danny's honest and capable service. read more

I took my son's PC on Saturday. It was a software problem, we could not figure it out ourselves. I decided to go there because of the good reviews. Danny was extremely helpful. When looking into upgrading gaming computers, I was referred by my father to DJ Computers after having previous poor experiences with local computer repair shops in Napa. Danny was incredibly helpful in determining what parts I needed that would be compatible for a custom build. When I dropped all the parts off for a pretty big job of building the new one, transferring hard drives from the old one to the new one, and putting a new hard drive in the old computer, it was all completed in less than 2 days!!!! Both PCs have been running flawlessly since then and I am proud to say that the next time I may need a new PC or upgrade, my first stop will be DJs. read more

Danny was absolutely great. I had gotten a battery warning on my Macbook Pro. He suggested I completely discharge the battery then recharge it because doing so sometimes eliminates the need to replace the battery. In my case I still needed the battery replaced. Danny ordered the part then called me when it came it. I dropped my computer off in the morning and had it back in two hours. I was super impressed with his service and skill. Took my Toshiba laptop into this shop on a recommendation having never been there before. It was not booting...nothing at all showing up on the screen. DVD was engaging and fan was working. Danny took it to diagnose the problem. Called me within an hour saying he had fixed it by resetting the BIOS...something I would have never guessed to try (required opening the machine). 2 months ago, my old computer screen frame was broken. I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars to fix it but I didn't want to buy a new one yet. I went to Computerland at Berkeley downtown and was told that I might possibly spend $300-400 ($120 to just open it) and I needed to wait 4 days before they even had time to open the computer to find out what the problem was. I called several other repair shops and was told that they could not do it and all recommended me to go to Computerland. Finally a nice guy recommended me to see Danny. I arrived at Danny's shop before 10 am but Danny was not there yet. I told his partner (very nice guy too!) the problem of my computer, left my computer there, and went grocery shopping. When I came back Danny already diagnosed the problem and had solutions in mind. He patiently and clearly explained to me the options. I made my choice. I can pick it up in 3 hours and only $90! 3 hours later, I was very surprised to see how well it was fixed and the way he fixed it made my computer aesthetically very unique. He told me that I could bring it back if anything goes wrong in 2 weeks. But 2 months passed all has been good. I got numerous compliments when people saw my computer in the past two months and asked me where I got the beautiful repair. I felt extremely lucky. I believe that Danny's honesty and compassion as a business person and his skillfulness as a computer engineer are the most precious qualities his customers value and keep on being amazed over the years. read more

I was just searching on yelp and happen to come across the review on 8/11/13 for a DJ Computers, and I am not a customer. I have knowledge of computers, but don't understand technically how to fix or repair them. I use an IPAD more. Sounds like this customer doesn't understand nor appreciate what "profession" means. She would sound like a type of person that would question a doctor, lawyer, or auto mechanic for their professional service. What did they do to charge some much???? We have to respect professionals. They have experience, knowledge, and training in their field, that's why their service is valued. If you can't afford or are to cheap to pay the cost, do not go to a professional service, do it yourself. Treat professionals with respect. read more

I love D J's, what can I say? Every time I need a computer, or every time I need something fixed, I can drop in and they'll have it done by the next day, and if I'm in a super rush, they'll usually do it right then. I find them harder to work with over the phone because they have pretty thick accents, but in person I've never had a single problem. They're friendly, super honest, and completely competent. They won't deal with Macs, just fyi. I'm a PC girl, but I tried to bring a friend's Mac in once and they sent me down the street to someone else. (Whom I didn't much like, but oh well.) read more

I went in for a new AC adapter and the owner was really helpful. He checked to see if it could be repaired rather than replaced, then looked to see if he had a used replacement on hand (unfortunately, he didn't). After selecting a new one, he opened the box and hooked it up to make sure it worked. He spent time with us and answered a bunch of questions. I sooo appreciate competence and good service. Was referred to DJ computers today to fix a fan mounted on a heat sink on my DVR. I previously had gone everywhere and no one could help me... Frys, Best buy, Berkeley used computers... I even called the manufacture.. and they suggested to buy a new DVR. This guy was excellent.. he tore right into it and came up with a solution immediately.. Went in a couple days ago after being referred by Radioshack just up the street. I was looking for a VGA to HDMI adapter cable for my computer monitor. I came in and was immediately greeted and shown exactly what they had. I tried one of the cables (cheaper here than on amazon!), but it wasn't the right one. I brought it back an hour later and exchanged it for another option. It was $5 more, and I only had $3 cash on me, but he (Danny, I believe) exchanged it anyways and told me to come back to explore more options or receive a refund (which they normally don't do for cables) if it didn't work. Fortunately, it worked perfectly, and I was able to get my new computer up and running without any more issues. Really exceptional service! I have a medical instrument which was having some major issues mostly related to the old Windows 98 machine embedded within. The manufacturer was unable to repair it, but would be happy to sell me a new one for $35,000. I contacted D J Computers and Danny thought he might be able to fix it. While, ultimately his heroic efforts to resuscitate this device mostly failed due to some proprietary boards which are not available, he was able to figure out a way to make it operational. I appreciate the fact that he was willing to try and I was impressed with the way he logically approached the various possible ways to make it work. I'm sure he spent more time on the repair than was warranted for his diagnostic fee, but I think he relished the challenge. read more

I went to Danny with an unusually slow windows machine. I have to say I was very impressed initially- he guided me on the best and cheapest way forward, which he said was to reformat and re-install the OS (instead of trying to debug the cause). He also said that he will use special software to discover the product id of my MS-office package free of cost, and use that to re-install. I was happy. Once I took the machine back, I realized that my word/excel etc were not installed properly, and said 'activate the trial version'. I tried using the product key that Danny gave me, and it did not work. I called Danny right away, and was disappointed that he brushed aside my surprise saying he doesn't know why Microsoft is behaving that way, he had just promised to re-install OS and this MS-office installation was a favor. Well, this response made be mad- that was not how it was presented to me initially....if I had known there was any chance of this, I might not have gone for re-installation of OS at all. Now I am stuck with an MS office that doesn't work, and trying forever to reach MS office support, unsuccessfully (and my machine is not any significantly faster either). read more

Danny has helped us with printers problems, hardware repairs and recently he helped me drastically improve my laptop computer speed. Today he came to our home to fix our router problems, and got my wireless back on high-speed internet--yay! Danny is friendly, very professional and knows his stuff...it took him less than an hour to fix the problem. This place is ridiculous. I went there a few weeks ago and needed to buy a new power source. The IDIOT who works there on the days the technicians are not (everyday but Wednesday), and she tried to sell me the wrong one. I told her what her mistake had been. She seemed to get cross with me and insisted she was right. Angrily I told her she was lying, and trying to rip me off (because the cord was double sided male adapters for some strange product). So she called her manager and started explaining how I was trying to steal her cable. So of course the manager comes to the shop, looking like he knew she was an idiot. He explained to her why she was wrong. Looking like a fool she "took a break", forcing me to leave. This place is so lame. Danny took care of the problem I had with my iMac. In reassembling some dust got on a heat sensor. When I got home the fan was spinning too fast. Brought it back and he took care of it. (Note: he didn't have to clean the machine once he opened it. He did and that is why the fan problem.) A very conscientious guy. I don't know what the complaint about costs were. Just a word of caution, don't go there when the owner, Danny, is not there. And just a word to Danny - You might want to think about who you leave in charge there when you leave for vacation. I went there at such time and got the biggest blowhard talking my ear off about all kinds of things, telling me my computer was not worth fixing when you can just by a new one cheap blah blah blah.
